Aussie Aqueduct Poo Pipe
A very unusual bridge in Geelong, Australia. Heritage listed, which is the only reason it has not been completely demolished by the owner.
Despite its unglamorous function (transporting sewerage), it has some charm, IMO.
And let us not forget that sewers and reticulated water supply have saved more lives than every doctor, operation and medicine. Ever.
I do not beg for likes, but a comment is always appreciated.

Copper Wire Insulation Stripping Machine

Stripping 700 meters of house supply wire, using a $AUD60 Ebay supplied machine, driven with a battery drill. The stripping machine worked effectively and very quickly, except where the insulation was damaged. Loose bits of insulation bloc...

    Hi John i have just finished a marine twin and I'm going to make a Stuart triple next. I am going to (try to) make the crank from solid and machine the intermediate eccentrics within the crank (is this a bad idea)?

    • @johnv341
      @johnv341 5 месяцев назад

      Hi. I have made 4 solid crankshafts, of which 2 were useable. And they did not include solid eccentrics. Bear in mind that without including the solid eccentrics you will need 4 centres to machine the mains and big ends. If you machine the eccentrics with the crankshaft you will need 10 TEN! centres at each end (assuming a reversing engine), which I would think would be incredibly difficult in such a small model. So yes, I think that split eccentrics is more sensible. But absolutely make a solid crankshaft rather than a built up type. John.

    Hi John. I would very interested in how you went about converting your drawing/idea for the component to the g-code for the Boxford 125 TCL. Is that a spherical or epical body for the steam valve? I intialy got the 125 TCL lathe to make a few steam fittings for my 7.1/4” gauge loco and other steam related projects. I’m in the process of converting to Mach 3 not having the Boxford suite of software.

    • @johnv341
      @johnv341 5 месяцев назад

      The Boxford software which came with the 125TCL is ancient so I would encourage you to convert to Mach 3. I generate my G codes on V Carve Pro, which is really designed for CNC woodworking, but with appropriate feeds and speeds works very well with metals. The valve body is spherical BtW. Another G Code generator which I often use is "Ezilathe", which was written by Stuart Tankard, and is available for no charge. But you do need Mach 3 first.

    I made several model cannons which used this pattern of traversing platform. The carriages varied a bit with the size and style of the barrel, but the traversing platforms were always identical. This rotting, unrestored platform was incredibly useful in revealing the usually hidden secrets of the construction, mainly due to the windows provided by the rot. I referred to this video many times during the construction of the models.

      Thanks John. Back then it cost about $AUD2k for the conversion, would be less now. I had expert help with the wiring and Mach3 setup. And yes, it has enabled me to tackle some complex turning jobs which would have been very difficult or impossible otherwise. That cost does not include the lathe, computer or software. @@johnkinnane547 I have been happy with my castings from EJ Winter, but I believe that they might have had some changes in suppliers in recent years. G'day John and Greetings from Tasmania, I am building a No 7 Boltons mill engine and yours is terrific so I'm hoping you wouldn't mine answering a couple of questions about the build. Firstly did you find that the castings especially the valve chest being right on the measurements only allows for very fine milling, the other thing is did you find the flywheel casting chilled and very hard to machine, I would really appreciate any info on this. Kind regards John Kinnane

    • @johnv341
      @johnv341 2 года назад

      Hi John, sorry for the late reply. I don't often check my YT posts. The Bolton 7 was the first model which I built from castings and that was a decade ago. So I have forgotten most of it. I do remember having to break through the outer layer of the flywheel with a good insert cutter. And there was very little machining allowance on some of the castings. I seem to remember using JB Weld to pack out some hidden bits. There is usually a workaround, and that is half of the fun. Or is it frustration? These days I tend to use bar stock. You get a second chance if you stuff up the first effort! Good luck! ps. you can buy cast iron bar stock if desired but often brass, bronze or steel is suitable. John V

    Did you add another encoder to the spindle in order to be able to thread on your machine?

    • @johnv341

      There is a single slot disk on the spindle with a detector to accurately measure RPM and starting rotational position. The actual RPM rarely exactly corresponds to what is programmed into MAch3, and there is always an acceleration and deceleration period, so the encoder on the spindle is essential. Every CNC lathe has one or should have.

    If you really want to see how well this is going, put a vacuum gauge on the exhaust pipe between the LP chest and condenser. If you are pulling a vacuum the condenser is truly doing its job. You should find that the small pumps next to the Edward's pump are the boiler feedwater and makeup pumps driven by the engine, use a recirculating valve the control whether they feed or not. You want a far greater cooling water volume through your condenser than what those can provide.
