In case you've ever wondered- here's a quick explanation! The organ sounds in this recording were from the Caen and Rotterdam sample sets by Sonus Paradisi. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. May I ask from what company your purchased the manuals, pendal, shoes, etc?
Awesome just what I needed to know !!!
Thanks- so glad that helped!
I love how clear the Dutch organs are
Very helpful. Thanks
Thanks so much!!
Great video! What about when you want to change stops? Is this possible too, in the daw?
Thanks! you should be able to map the midi command for the piston in hauptwerk
What kind of Speakers? What is the name brand and what size are the cones in the Monitors speakers? Thanks, Terry
I have a funny mix of speakers now- but the main ones I’m using for practice at home are some Yamaha studio monitors. I have a sub I salvaged from an old installation. My plan is to buy a good amp with multiple outputs for a lot of speakers later. The downside to only having two speakers is that when multiple divisions (especially reeds) are coupled together it winds up being a bit rough. For simple practice registrations the two monitors work well though. Thanks for listening!
@@stevenwooddell You didn''t say what size the Yamaha Studio speakers were, for example, the woofer cone size or and tweeter size, which most tweeters are 1 inch. but what about the larger bottom woofer part? What size is recommended? Thanks, Terry
@@studioopinions5870 I have a pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors- they’re really not designed for this application but they work. I would recommend just trying to use what you happen to already have to get started. If you want to spend more try using between 4-8 speakers and a sub to separate the different divisions for a better overall sound.
It’s a lovely organ and super wood colours! This may be a silly question but I’ve noticed that most pipe and theatre organs have the manuals in line horizontally, IE. If you take middle C all keyboards line up from left to right, I have a Technics GA3 and before that a Hammond T500 which have a horizontally staggered keyboard between upper and lower manuals. Why is this and when did it change? Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words- I've really enjoyed having the instrument at home. I looked around a bit for the answer about the staggered keyboards- not finding one, my guess is that the design was an effort to maximize the effectiveness of an instrument with a shorter keyboard- giving more bass on one manual and more ability to play a solo line in the other. The keyboards with aligned middle C are the most common though- it just makes switching between keyboards more intuitive. Thanks for watching!
Can you describe the tablet and the software on it? How do you configure the page turns?
Thanks for watching! It’s an IPad Pro using the forscore app for music pdfs. (I recommend turboscan for making PDFs because of how well it handles different lighting situations) I use the Airturn pedal- if I’m playing piano I can turn pages myself- on organ I need someone else to turn. Because that’s a first generation iPad I haven’t gotten to play with ForScore’s new facial recognition features for page turning. Hope that helps!
Wonderful execution!! One question. Is your version of Caen dry or wet? Thanks!
Thank you! I shortened the reverb of the wet sample set to make it sound more plausible where I’m playing.
@@stevenwooddell I say this because this sampler is wonderful and I intend to buy it. If possible, post more videos! Greetings from Brazil!!!
After about two years I still love the sound of that sample set- it’s definitely aged well. Good luck with your purchase and thanks for the encouragement!
Widor's symphony f minor is a really beautiful and technical piece! The organ looks huge and beautiful! Have you played with the Hauptwerk sampleset? Anyway, your performance is great! Steven!😀😀😀💕💕💕
Thanks so much for your encouragement! This organ has the Hauptwerk Dudelange sample set which has really been wonderful to work with. Thanks for listening!
Beautiful. Did you make the sample set dry?
Thanks for listening! I loaded shorter reverb lengths on the samples (not completely dry) The original full length samples were too much when added to the natural acoustics of the church. I recorded a direct output, then I think I added back some reverb in the editing (it’s been a few weeks now)
Would you mind to share the source of getting those console hardware? like the manuals and pedal board? Besides, personally I found having a seperate stereo speakers for the pedal division is a good improvement after just a simple stereo for all mix, as the seperate sets release the main speakers from the burden of bass and allow the main speakers to focus on mid-high frequencies more effectively. I can then hear my bass voice line much easier. Anyway thanks for sharing your setup with us.
Thanks! And I agree about the speakers- you definitely do benefit from a sub (but headphones can work really well too) I think the keyboards came from this company: www.midiworks.ca/ (they came through a different company but these look identical and this site offers a lot of customization) Hope that helps
This is a beautiful piece, and played wonderfully. Thank you for sharing your great talent. Hard to believe this is being played in what I'm assuming is your own home. Amazing!
Thanks so much for your encouragement! It really has been wonderful to be able to hear such a beautiful instrument in my basement. Thanks for listening!
I assume this is a Hauptwerk organ. Sounds wonderful. I'm really wanting to find out the costs of setting up a Hauptwerk organ. They surely have a wonderful sound, far superior to the digital Allen and Rogers organs, IMO.
I’ve really enjoyed being able to have samples like that at home! How you set up a Hauptwerk system is really up to what you’re trying to accomplish. There are some good a la carte midi keyboard and pedalboard options. If you can get an old but midi capable organ it’s also possible just to run your sound through your laptop. Thanks for listening and wish you all the best!
Steven, I had a cd of an organist playing a Fisk organ, and this was one of his selections. I was not aware it was a Widor composition. I think you did a beautiful job on this piece, and wow, what an an impressive organ this is, with a beautiful and powerful sound. Is it in Europe or the US? Are you a concert organist, a church organist, or both? I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but I love the pipe organ, and have great respect for those who are masters of it. Your name is kind of American-sounding, but I'm assuming this is in Europe. I'm an extremely amateur unpaid organist for my church in WV, USA. We bought a nearly 100 year old Estey organ with a Shantz console from a church which was being demolished, and reinstalled it in our church in the same city. It is only 11 rank, but it works fine for our needs.
Thanks so much John! I’m originally from Virginia and I’m down in the Atlanta area now where I do a mix of church, teaching and concert stuff. Sound like an interesting hybrid to work with at church- hope it’s working well for you all! All the best in West Virginia!
Beautiful playing of this cherished music by Whitlock! A really captivating performance using the Hereford set - bravo!
Thank you! It really is one of those rare pieces that doesn’t seem to lose any beauty over the years. Thanks for listening!

Excellent playing! Do I hear the reverb of Dudelange or from the church you recorded it in? (or both?)
Thanks so much for your encouragement! So you are hearing some of the reverb tail of the samples but to make them plausible in the room I had to shorten them in Hauptwerk. I did add some reverb to bring back some of the resonance that was lost since the recording was done with a direct feed from the organ. It’s strange to live in a world where that’s possible now :) Thanks so much for listening!
Enjoyed your playing 👏
Thanks so much!
Beautiful keyboards and wooden parts!
Thanks!
Great performance, and splendid job with the video too! I’m in the middle of building my very own haupwerk organ. It’s been fun so far. What organ sample set are you using in this performance? Thanks again.
Thanks so much! The sample set is from Laurenskerk, Rotterdam and you can find it here: www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/rotterdam-laurenskerk-main-organ.html All the best on your project!
For some clever minds, certain technical achievements simply come too late! I am sure that the good Johann Sebastian Bach would have been delighted with Hauptwerk, for SO he could have used his outstanding knowledge and genius to build HIS organ, tailored to his own needs, and at the same time to pursue further development.
Great thought! It is fun to imagine what he would have done with a broader tonal palette at his disposal. At least it’s possible to play his music with plenty of color and clarity at home. Would have been fun to see what Bach would have done with a theater organ.
Absolutely beautiful performance! Thank you for sharing! Phoenix is currently doing a retro fit on my old Johannus 3 manual. Everything will be new with the exception of the console, pedal board and bench. I should have it back in another 2 weeks. They really make a superior electronic organ! I have a local friend who has a 4 manual with both phoenix and Hauptwerk. That organ is actually featured on phoenix website.
Thanks for your kind words about the Dupre. And Phoenix really did a beautiful job with this console and the one we now have at church. Hope your project goes well!
What tablet do you use? Its huge..
It's a first generation 12.9" iPad pro. I tried a smaller iPad at first but reading open score for choirs and reading a dense organ score was a nightmare (it was especially hard to tell which line the accidentals were on) You can get them refurbished now for a more reasonable price
Thanks you Steve - beautiful. If you please - who build your console? It looks perfect for a home with limited space. Thanks
Thanks so much for your kind words! Phoenix organs (in Canada) made the console- and they did a beautiful job with the keyboards and providing a simple way to connect all of the components together.
Excellent video! Deserves more views. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much!
Hauptwerk: the best gift in my adult live¡
Definitely one of the best things to come out of the last two years for me :) Glad you have had a good experience with Hauptwerk as well!!
One of my favorite Bach pieces! Very well played!
Thanks so much!
Very nice console! Hoping to finish my own setup soon :-D
Thank you- and all the best with your project!
its expensive, thats what it is
But there are those free sample sets :)
yeah there are those. still a great video thanks!
Hi. Thanks for this. I have heard that there can be significant differences in MIDI manuals. Which ones did you choose? Are you content with them? How did you acquire the pedalboard? Best regards,
Thanks so much! I got these from an organ builder, so I'm not sure where they sourced their keyboards. That said, the closest ones in appearance I can find are on this site: www.midiworks.ca/ They seem to have a custom ordering process that would give you a lot of options. (I haven't used them before, so I can't vouch for the quality, just seems like the right idea) If you do try them out, please let me know how they are. Good luck with your project!
Thank you Steven. A wonderfully informative and concise overview of Hauptwerk. I will certainly point others to this video, as I often get questions about virtual organs. By the way, I noticed that St Patrick's Cathedral Melbourne popped up at around 0:40. I've heard that organ many times. In fact, I first heard the Dupre Gm P&F played there in the late 1960s by Sergio de Pieri, who was the cathedral organist at the time. Best wishes for the New Year!
Must have been amazing to hear that Dupre on that instrument- as great as the samples are hearing the real thing is still definitely better :) Thanks for the encouragement and wish you all the best over the holidays!
BRAVO !! It's Spirit and Beauty ...for ever ! HOW MUCH César Frank SAVED the organ romantic period !! Thanks again !! Greetings from Québec city, Canada.
Thanks so much! Couldn’t agree more about Franck- the longer I live with his pieces the more I appreciate all he created. All the best from Atlanta!
I prefer the Dutch anytime. Clean, precise no muddled
That blend of personality and clarity definitely keeps me coming back to that sample set.
Yay! I’m super glad that I’m not alone with the system setup type!! Just a wonderful way to have a portable organ! Modded a Republic Of Gamers Hero III with 64GB and stuff. Used Ableton live with drag-in templates to configure for various sets. Stop / registers are hold notes, named each corresponding ‘key’ on the channels with the stop name! This video makes me happy! Thank you Steven! 😊
Thank you! Sounds like a great solution for the stops- and great to hear that I’m not the only one who has wrestled with their computer to make that work :)
Great information. I'm in the process of putting together a four manual console, for now I have a 17 note MIDI pedalboard that I plan to replace with a 32 note AGO. I have each manual set to a specific MIDI channel. I'm still working my way through the product documentation, but I have a few unanswered questions: While I'm researching available four-manual sample sets, for sample sets that have less than four manuals, is it possible to map sounds to my "extra" manual(s)? That is, can I utilize 4 manuals with a sample set of a 2-manual organ? Also, I'll only have a stereo speaker system (one subwoofer and two speakers), and I know many sample sets are designed for 6+ speaker systems. Does Hauptwerk provide tools to map the 6+ audio outs down to two for stereo playback? Thanks.
Thanks for your great questions! Manuals: In Hauptwerk’s auto detect settings there is an option to play multiple manuals on the same keyboard (you can map everything to one keyboard if you have to) depending on your sample set you might just be able to treat your fourth manual as a floating keyboard. When you are using the assignment settings I’m pretty sure it just asks you to confirm that you want to use (III and IV) on the same keyboard. The only time you really need to know your MIDI channel is if you are working with the keyboards in a DAW. The output is pretty flexible- Hauptwerk takes a look at the Interface or computer you are using and will give you those outputs as an option (as simple as L and R out- and you could daisy chain your sub) or it will offer the aux outputs from your interface I’m grateful they thought that through carefully. Hope that helps!
@@stevenwooddell great info! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. Your wood keyboard is really beautiful😊
Thank you! They have turned out to be incredibly friendly to play. Thanks for watching!
Good video, thanks. Grim practice instruments at school.... NO KIDDING. Hammond specials included!
Thanks for the encouragement! It’s funny how universal the bad practice organ experience was (is) We didn’t have any Hammonds- but we did have a lot of 8’ flutes sitting in front of keyboards that had seen a much better day.
I play a venerable, well-built Allen organ at my small church, purchased after an old Hammond crashed the bearings. Allen is an excellent instrument, but have limitations, especially when installed in smaller churches with poor acoustical characteristics (i.e. dry); the samples are void of reverberation. The Allen I play has "Virtual Acoustics" but the effects can be unpleasant if set for a long, artificially generated acoustic decay in a "dry" room. My recordings prove that. On the other hand, Hauptwerk appears to have upped the ante by sampling the acoustics as well as the organ. Since the organ I play is MIDI-equipped, I could easily hybridize it with a Hauptwerk system, but the church folks would not likely have any appreciation for it.
I love having the possibility of updating an older console with new samples! I've used Hauptwerk through an older Johannus organ that had audio inputs into it. The trick is bypassing the actual stops (you might need to work exclusively from pistons) I'd love to hear how things go if you wind up trying to use Hauptwerk for services.
Church has more organ than they need already. Any Haupwerk organ I ever build would be at home, and starting with an old 3-manual console and a tower computer that I'll build myself (I have built two). Old organs I see on ebay are overpriced.
@@accousticdecay Good luck with your project- would love to hear how it turns out!
Very well played and I am impressed with your technology and setup. You have given yourself an absolutely wonderful practice and study platform.
Thank you so much! I’m really grateful that I can hear instruments like that in my own home. Thanks for the encouragement!
Great video! What are the pieces at 5:10 and 5:42?
Thanks so much! I think I was just trying to improvise something that fit the sound of those reeds.
Thank you for sharing your Setup. I want to design and assemble something a little smaller (more portable). My application would be to be portable to assist singing in "home churches" or small Bible study groups. Maybe a simple standup 2 manual table with speakers like yours, all fitting into an easy transport box or cart.
That's a great idea! If you used a double keyboard stand (or even single keyboard stand) and a laptop stand with some good monitor speakers you should be able to make that work. Would love to hear what you come up with!
@2:05 That organ, in the Grote- or Sint Laurenskerk in Rotterdam is actually Danish, built by Marcussen & Sons (installed 1973). Its core tonal nature is more North German/Germanic Baroque than specifically Dutch. However, with its multiple-rank principals [on all divisions], it goes beyond the style associated with that era & area of organ building (as shown in its makers' crediting study tours of France and Spain, and their experience in Linz; the organ also has one division under [completely non-Baroque] expression). The ponderous sound of the original organ can be heard on ruclips.net/video/XwGCo_-Kliw/видео.html&ab_channel=PeterEilander, to compare with its sound per Hautpwerk samples. (Unfortunately, in the video, that first-heard [transept organ} is a bit out of tune, its mixtures, in particular.)
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate the clarification on the instrument and the link to the Gigout- which is a great way to hear the organ. What is your favorite example of quintessentially Dutch organ building?
Good explanation, for me having a single midi keyboard, the choice for smaller organs would be the logic one. Smaller renaissance organs, or positive organs are examples which are often single manual and have no pedal stops, so perfect for a single keyboard. But does Hauptwerk do these small examples as well? for instance the Compenius organ from Frederiksburg in Denmark?
Thanks for your kind words and great question! I’ve used a simple MIDI keyboard with the free set Friesach (which has clarity and personality and can be run on less than 8GB RAM) as a choir continuo. Just set manual 1 to the midi keyboard and then couple what you need. You can find the organ here: piotrgrabowski.pl/friesach/ Hope that helps!

F A B U L O U S ! I remember learning this A Minor Chorale when I was 18 (1976 - probably before you were born!) and playing it at a recital in the school chapel on a very large instrument with a beautiful French-voiced trompette available for the solo section in A Major! If only I had been able to play it as well as you do in this recording, which is exquisite! The Cavaille-Coll at St Etienne is my favourite sample set and listening to this recording was a wonderful treat for me. BRAVO!
Thank you so much for your kind words! (And apologies- somehow your comment had gotten lost in the held comments area) I just picked this one back up and it really is a piece that doesn’t disappoint to come back to- especially when you’ve actually got the right sounds for Franck. Would love to hear your take on the chorale! Wish you all the best and wonderful job on your channel!
