    Seeing that you’ve sold 95% of your books on Amazon, and only 5% on IS, when IS makes your book available to over 40,000 retailers, .. is WILD… to say the least. Just goes to show the true power of Amazon.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 9 дней назад

      Personally, not for me. I don’t see a good reason to use IS unless quality is a giant issue (many writers think it is, but the truth is their audience wouldn’t know the difference). And even then, the quality isn’t THAT much better. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The other scenario: You’re a writer with a big name and bookstores will stock your book. This is probably less than 1% of self-published writers.

    Does anyone know why the killer didn't clean up the expert's body? The lawyer's secretary had to plead not to be hidden after death. I initially thought it was related to the prevailing notion of the partners' guilt, but all the waitress saw him at the restaurant.

      This is an excellent question. I think the plot/character answer is that he’s so far off his mantra that he has become insanely sloppy. Whether or not that’s a fair thing for the character to do likely depends on the audience. I have a longer The Killer Explained video where I go in-depth on his character arc and why he’s getting so sloppy.

    Couple of maybe stupid Qs: Have you ever encountered resistance by bookstores to book a signing event b/c the book is distributed via Ingram? Also, how does one make sure that books will be at the store by the event date via Ingram? Does the publicist tell the booker to order them several weeks in advance of the signing? Thanks in advance.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork Месяц назад

      Not stupid questions at all! I haven't tried a book signing where the books available were ONLY coming from IngramSpark. I would take a look at this article in regards to book signings at stores: onthecobblestoneroad.com/bookstore-signings/. In answer to your second question, this is going to probably be vastly different for different authors. It's not that easy to get book stores to carry your book. Even if they do, they'll likely buy only a few copies (unless you're famous) and see if those even sell. So, if you want to do a signing (and you're not famous), my guess is that you'd order copies of the books, bring them with you, and sell those (giving a cut back to the store for letting you use their space). BUT--and this is a big caveat--I don't have a ton of experience with this, so I would look to someone with more experience!

    Watched this movie for the 1st time last night but I was left with a few questions. Your video nicely clarified all but one. Evelyn tells Jake that both she and Hollis were having affairs. Was Evelyn allowing Hollis to sleep with her daughter or was his affair with someone else?

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 2 месяца назад

      GREAT question. Here’s my take: At that point of the story, Evelyn is lying. She’s trying to protect her daughter. In order to do that, she’s trying to divert attention away from the real problem: “Cross can’t find my daughter.” The easiest way to do that? Admit that she’s having an affair (she isn’t, but Gittes might believe it) and tell him she’s justified in doing so because Hollis was also having an affair (he wasn’t, but Gittes already has photos with Evelyn’s daughter, so he might believe it). The goal was to make it seem like the photos Gittes got of Hollis and Evelyn’s daughter was just Hollis having a fling with some random girl. Technically, she trying to send him on some other path. That’s my take. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Paul hears that "Paul Atreides" must die for the KH to rise. He also hears "when you took a life, you took your own life". Killing somebody is killing your own humanity and innocence. This is Paul's internal conflict during the fight. When he kills Jamis, he kills is own innocence and humanity. He killed Paul Atreides (is innocent self) to let the Kwisatz Haderach rises, with the terrible visions he saw previously.

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 2 месяца назад

      Love this interpretation. I’m on board with it. The vision of Jamis killing him is just metaphor, then? In this interpretation? What do you think of the dream where Jamis appears to be training/guiding him?

    • @natzbarney4504
      @natzbarney4504 2 месяца назад

      @@HowStoriesWork Paul does not see just one inevitable future, he sees lot of different possible futures which come true or not depending on the choices he makes. He could have been killed by Jamis, he could also have become his friend as other possible futures showed... but he ended up killing him, killing a part of his own humanity at the same time and thus coming closer to the realization of those visions of horror he had earlier in the tent. The fact that Paul can choose between different roads leading to different possible futures is very clear in the book. In the book, he notably sees a route in which he chooses to give up his revenge by leaving Arrakis, becoming a Guild navigator, or reconciling with the Harkonnens. He can also choose to make common cause with the Fremen, knowing that this risks leading to the bloody Jihad that he sees in the tent. Villeneuve chose to illustrate these alternatives by showing us images of these different possible futures.

    • @HowStoriesWork

    • @HowStoriesWork
      @HowStoriesWork 2 месяца назад

      You’re right, HOWEVER, it’s not as obvious as you would think. There’s ONE reference to her being a concubine in the entire film, and it’s in a line of dialogue delivered by Baron Harkonnen, who makes it sound like he’s calling her that as an insult, not technically describing her. Cross killed Mulwray for two reasons: (1) Mulwray was against the dam project to supply water to the farmland north of Los Angeles. You are genius man. Very good explanation. What about the last words of the killer?

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I took The Killer’s last words to mean this: 1) In the beginning of the film, he talks about humanity being made up of “the few” and “the many,” and he’s one of the few. 2) At the end, he has realized that he’s not a pure, cold-blooded killer. But my take is that he also thinks he’s been able to escape his life of crime. Meaning, I think he’s prideful in his ability to escape the consequences of his actions. So, he describes himself as “one of the many,” but he hasn’t really escaped the implications of his actions just yet. That’s kinda how I saw it.

    Great analysis. Everything makes sense but in order for the Expert to setup the radioactive spec, she must have known that she was being followed. What are the clues that reveal that the Expert knew that she was being followed? There was a bizarre traffic stop that really seemed out of place in the movie but i didn't notice anything revealing the Killer's hand in that scene. Can you make this clear?🤔

      Thanks for watching and commenting! And this is a great question. Two thoughts: 1) I don’t think she HAS to know. She might just eat at that restaurant all the time and she has a backup plan. She could take her targets there to deliver the radioactive spec. BUT… 2) I think she does know… but the evidence isn’t great. Like you said, him pulling up next to her was weird-especially since she doesn’t look over. And then when he makes a right turn to follow her, it’s pretty obvious. Also, she does go to that restaurant where she clearly has a trap set up. And finally, when he’s observing her at home, it feels like she’s setting him up. In his narration, he’s almost suggesting she’s doing the job wrong, but she’s called “The Expert,” which indicates she’s way ahead of him… But to your point, the evidence that she definitely knows isn’t as strong as the other evidence. Fantastic question.

      @@HowStoriesWork Since the Expert scene is such a pivotal point in movie, what i find interesting is that Fincher (who is primarily a Visual Artist) decides to use (kind of) a rambling soliloquy by The Expert as a turning point in the movie rather than show any visual clues (ie. at the time of the meeting) regarding the radioactive spec. This is the only questionable issue that i have with your theory: Fincher would/should have definitely incorporated that into the mise en scene. Perhaps a video looking deeper into this might help?

    While the movie is based on a comic series, I doubt that ending. The Killer still has a lot off stuff to do and can’t just die.
