    i was in denver recently and relying mostly on the rtd rail to get around. gotta say i dont hate it like everyone made it sound like i would, and was pretty impressed with how expansive it is. my biggest issues with it are: 1) most of the stations are in inconvenient to access areas 2) not enough stations within denver city limits 3) stops and delays are sorta common. it just takes too long to get from station to station sometimes i was staying in aurora so getting into the city center was extremely convenient. they were also in the midst of the reconstruction project ongoing so i hope the frequencies and operating times improve, some of the smaller lines like the h have awful frequency and stop running too early

    I think that running commuter rail on the Grand Junction (the alignment thru Cambridge) could cause issues because there are a high number of level crossings. We would need to tunnel most of this section (and potentially place a multi-use pathway on the former surface RoW). I'm also wondering what we would do about Amtrak trains that currently interline with the Worcester Line. As of now, there is only the once daily Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, but, in the future, we may have a spur off the Maple Leaf to Toronto, increased service between Boston and Albany (or even between Boston and Buffalo), and a shunt off the Northeast Regional/Acela where trains take the inland route (via Hartford, Springfield, and Worcester) instead of the coastal route (via New London and Providence). Would these Amtrak trains now all go thru the Grand Junction into North Station (which could cause congestion if additional northward Amtrak routes, like Boston-Montréal or Boston-Québec City, are created, and/or if service frequency is increased on the Downeaster), or would they still go to Back Bay and South Stations?

    • @thehouseoftransit2719

      @@janAlekantuwa You’re right, since this video was made I’ve come to realize it probably doesn’t make much sense to shift trains on the Worcester Line to feed into North Station

    • @janAlekantuwa
      @janAlekantuwa 5 дней назад

      @@thehouseoftransit2719 Yeah; I think that we could accommodate the Pink Line at Back Bay by reducing the size of I-90 (or even eliminating the highway altogether). Congestion at South Station could be allieviated by highway removal as well. As for the Fitchburg Line, given that it has lower service frequency than the Worcester Line, we could still have it run along the Grand Junction, or we could have it keep its current ROW, while the Green Line gets tunneled as far as Danehy Park/North Cambridge. In the latter scenario, we'd have a couple Green Line reconfigurations/extensions: 1. Resurrect the A branch to Watertown and have it link with the Watertown GLX branch to form a loop 2. Have the B branch split off from the rest of the Green Line at Boylston and terminate at Post Office Square 3. Turn the C branch into a tram running between Kenmore and Reservoir, with free transfers to the Pink Line at Reservoir With the B branch terminating at Post Office Square and the C branch terminating at Kenmore, the downtown section of the Tremont St Subway would only have A, E, and Pink trains running thru it, which would sharply cut down on congestion As for the Waltham GLX branch, I think that merging the stretch of the Fitchburg Line between Waltham and North Station with the Fairmount Line to create a Purple Line rapid transit line could work. This, rather than the Blue Line, would replace the Fairmount Line (sans intensive tunneling projects under the South End), and it would interline with the Fitchburg CR Line (with infill stations). As for the Blue Line, I think it would make more sense to extend it westward to West Station with a tunnel into Lower Allston. This would provide much-needed rail service to Lower Allston, and would bring metro service to West Station. Blue Line stops west of Gov't Ctr would be as follows: Charles/MGH, Esplanade, Back Bay/Copley (which would have a pedestrian tunnel joining the two), Landsdowne/Fenway Park, Grand Junction, West Station, and Lower Allston

    Pentagon station is now basically fossilised due to the federal government's reluctance to allow any non-military construction so close to the building -- the station is literally on the doorstep just outside the secure area, but the land it sits under is federally controlled. Altering it to allow for truly stacked cross-platform transfers would need the federal say-so. The simplest solution (yet still expensive) is to both twin the Rosslyn station, and add a wye between Arlington Cemetery (Blue) and Court House (Orange) to allow a direct non-DC service between at least King Street and Dulles Airport. This would be in addition to de-interlining the Blue Line and building a new tunnel east-west through downtown DC.

    I agree with your idea that Metro systems are primarily to shuttle people between the suburbs and the core. I think one alternative to the "Bloop" could be to have trains start at Eisenhower ave and route them towards National Harbor and beyond. Those trains would then reach Old Town station and continue towards Franconia Springfield. This would mean that there would be no metrorail service between Old Town and Eisenhower Ave, which is probably an unpopular idea. However, you still have the massive park and ride complex in Huntington that many people could use to commute to DC via National Harbor. And vice versa. You could have alot of people commuting from Maryland and park at Oxon Hill and take the metro to Eisenhower ave. Then, you could route the silver line through Columbia Pike, Pentagon, the Yellow Line bridge and eventually to its terminus to Largo on a separate tunnel.

    For Downtown, we should keep Theatre District station, and run the commuter trains there in addition to the LRT lines that go there. An additional Theatre District DCPA station would be built under the DCPA complex, and we would still have that downtown loop you mentioned, just with the bottom of it being my proposed Theatre District corridor. When doing that, be careful not to put it under any active theatres. Don’t wanna disturb a performance of Mamma Mia when a Silverliner V rips through at full speed.

    Some things I’d do differently: • If the downtown rail link was built, the Orange Line would basically have no purpose due to following existing railways for almost the entirety of it’s route. I would have the Pink Line take over the Orange Line’s old alignment between North Station and Oak Grove, while the Orange Line would receive an entirely new route north of North Station, through Charlestown, Chelsea Station where it would interchange with the Silver Line SL3 and the Newburyport/Rockport Line, and Everett, terminating at Square One Mall in Saugus. • Not a light rail shuttle for the short segment between Needham and West Roxbury. Instead some kind of local shuttle bus service along Green Plain Ave & Needham Street. There is not much in the area except for low-density suburban sprawl and a bus service would be less costly and still have the capacity. If it really was needed, it could kinda just have articulated buses and if it was really needed, dedicated lanes. • I’d have the Nubian-Waterfront transit line be a subway instead of a light rail and instead of having the people mover, extend the subway from the waterfront area via the airport to the Blue Line’s Airport Station, which I’d rename Airport Interchange to not cause confusion. A new bus loop would be built at Airport Interchange Station with one line of the expanded BRT system terminating there, instead of going to the waterfront. This way the line would not have to run in the middle of Washington Street. I would also have the line extended along Washington Street to Forest Hill to interchange with the Orange Line, creating a new rapid transit line that follows almost the entirety of the old route of the Washington Street Elevated.

    I think at a minimum the MBTA system definitely does NEED an orbital route, the yellow line in your plans. But IMO the second of importance is a Fitchburg-Worcester (pronounced 'wor-ster' or 'wistah') link along rt190, as well as the North-South Stations link, because currently that's a Red-Orange/Green transfer rather than a direct route. Also, as long as the airport still gets free access to the subway system, almost anything would be an improvement over the silver line. (even though I take advantage of that free ride only once in a blue moon)

    Colfax is a crucial commercial vehicle corridor through the city. It’s the only street that explicitly allows commercial vehicle traffic, and as such, heavy vehicle traffic is quite high throughout. This would pose a challenge to any road diet/centrally aligned train system. My suggestion would be to use 13/14th streets for trains or shift commercial vehicle traffic to those streets. Having trains and commercial vehicles on the same stroad sounds like a recipe for disaster. The colfax corridor desperately needs improved transit though. It’s crazy that it’s only being served by busses that run in the same lanes as normal traffic.

    Oh, man. Train service on Little River would be an absolute game changer. That's one of the busiest and most underserved bus corridors I've experienced. The bus I often take only runs once every 30 minutes and is almost always very late because of the crazy traffic, so I've had a chance to watch a LOT of buses go by, and they're always packed like sardine cans. Even when you've got various buses going by every couple of minutes, they're all full. It's insane. And the two buses that actually go past Annandale? Forget about it. I'd even take rabid bus going from like King Street to Fair Oaks Mall, with dedicated bus lanes. Hell, at this point, I'd take no change to service, but with dedicated bus lanes. That alone would be a huge step up. But a train? That would be amazing!

    Australian here - Melbourne's City Loop is not a great example of this type of solution in my opinion, as it had a number of drawbacks and was overbuilt. They also stuffed up bits of the construction so that one of the lines can ONLY run one direction around the Loop without conflicting with other lines, and the Loop design tried to put too many lines/branches into one Loop tunnel. This Loop design was actually very peaky and commuter-focused. In an Australia context I would suggest Sydney is a better example with its City Circle line that does the same job in a better way. But I disagree this is the best solution - I think Denvers suburban rail should through-run onto the busier southern LR branches and these should get platforms raised and be converted to suburban rail standards with some improved grade separation. This would give you faster speeds and the eficiency benefits of through-running, which is my major criticism of the Melbourne City Loop concept - you showed on the map you highlighted that there are 7 main lines running into the city of Melbourne from the West and roughly the same from the east (not including branches), as many of these as possible should be through-run rather than looped as looping has hefty disadvantages too (slower journeys to the last station on the loop before resuming running in the suburban direction, more confusing for passengers, more construction & maintenance needed for less benefit, more difficult to add additional services).

      A looping service is definitely a tradeoff, but so is reconstructing every station on an existing light rail line. Sure, you could improve ops a little, but that money should probably go towards expanding the network rather than reconstructing lines that aren’t in particularly useful places. Just my take on things

      @@thehouseoftransit2719 you would have a point If the light rail service was successful, but it has pretty poor ridership numbers whilst the suburban rail has the highest ridership per mile of all commuter rail systems in the country outside NYC, and that is with the present operations of a terminal station not through-running into the City and serving some of the more important journey drivers, and lack of TOD. Suburban rail done well like in Australia (Sydney, Perth, Melbourne or Brisbane) with through-running is far more attractive for TOD and for families wanting to relocate themselves near to transit, compared to say Adelaide, Canberra or Newcastle in Australia which all have much worse performance at least partly due to the terminal nature of their operations. In the context of Denver you could sell it as an upgrade and use it to justify increased development around the existing light rail stations, with faster speeds and more Grade separations along with nicer stations and through-running being a proper upgrade and transformation of the system (especially AS the through-running would give people way Out on the Southside or Westside a direct train to the Airport or at worst a same-platform Transfer)

      @@kyletopfer7818 You imply that the suburban rail performs better by virtue of it being suburban rail, which is simply untrue. The suburban rail network performs better almost exclusively because of the A Line serving DIA, which is a major ridership generator. Would the light rail lines ideally have been built as suburban rail? Yes. But they weren’t, and frankly that’s hardly the biggest flaw in their design. The problem is that these lines serve destinations with limited use and often little development potential. The mode isn’t the issue here, it’s where the lines go. So while you could put effort into reconstructing the light rail system into a “more appropriate” mode, it probably won’t do much for ridership compared to just running the trains more or building new lines to places people actually want to go.

      @@thehouseoftransit2719 we shouldn't ignore the benefits of suburban rail though, I have seen stacks of videos and comments from non-regular users saying they found the ride on the suburban lines in Denver more comfortable and pleasant which is important for longer journeys. Suburban rail stations are a nicer spot to wait for trains and there is no reason you couldn't have platform screen doors or sheltered waiting areas to protect from road noise on highway median stations. Perhaps the solution is going to be building a fourth track on the southern railway corridor, grade separating more of the line, kicking the freight companies onto 2 of the 4 tracks, then running the suburban trains as expresses at their max speed of 79mph with a strategic interchange interchange station or 2 between LR and a stack of TOD around interchanges? Running costs with 4-car or eventually 6-car suburban trains at 10min or 15min headways will be lower than that which is needed to provide similar capacity with light rail vehicles especially if you cant couple more sets together than the present 2. Just on cost, your city loop idea would be something like 2 miles of new underground tunnel right? There is no way the city will let RTD get away with doing that cut-and-cover in the middle of downtown so it is going to be expensive, whereas linking Union Station with the southern LR corridor could an easy short cut-and-cover tunnel mostly through carparks and a shorter section on road.

    amen to getting more frequent light rail on the commuter lines closer to the city! One train every two hours is basically useless.
