Vintage Stereo Turntable Review - Pioneer PL 55
Hi, I have this receiver and have had since I bought it while in the Army in Germany back in 1974. I ran Boss 501's on it. My issue is after all these years, it has stopped working and I live in Ct and can not find all anyone to work/clean/service it. My question do you do this as a hobby or living. I really would like to find someone to fix it. Thanks for your time. Scott from Putnam Ct.
Just modest sugestion: speak slower....
Someone just gave me a CT-F750. Three belts were melted. Replaced them with what I had laying around for now. It works on some tapes but not others. It looks like the pinch rollers are a little worn out and if the tape has some resistance it slows way down. If you press up on the tape when it is slowing down it speeds back up. I need to track down some pinch rollers. I tried sanding it a little and put rubber renue on them and no luck. Glad I didn't pay for it.
One of the reasons I dislike tape decks...time and labor is ridiculous for repairs. I will sometimes order from WJOE Radio if I'm looking for belt/roller kits. He sends instructions :)
I would return it for a refund if possible. I don't think it's the filter cap. My guess would be the pre-amp or output transistors. Was it sold as-is?
That ship sailed long ago...stay tuned for future installments to see what the issue was :)
Interested to see how this turns out.
Stay tuned for some interesting info and some lessons learned...
I got one from ebay about 10 years ago it was in good shape . The left channel wasn't working had it fixed and a few replaced and cleaned up i think it set me back about $280
I do like these receivers...I'm not 100% down with the 'style', but they sound really good.
Nifty idea on that cabinet.
Thanks! Sometimes you just gotta MacGuyver it...
Hilariously terrible video. Why not figure out what you're reviewing before turning your phone on? My 12 year olds could do better.
If you don't mind, I suggest you run a record also to see if speed is good. Thanks for the video!
I usually test a record (at least a side) after I've wrapped a service up...
@@millervintagehifi3034 Ok, thanks. That would be nice to show in the video also.
@@JohnCarter-r2g Playing an entire record? More than about 3 seconds of a song and I get a copyright strike. Not gonna happen here :)
@@millervintagehifi3034 No, just at least to see if speeds are righr...lol
I have a 2275 Marantz, i need to clean the face plate.Any suggestion on what to use ?
Carefully with dish soap and warm water. You could try something like Simple Green, but I would be cautious with any 'cleaner'.
So your first video you got 0 ohm readings. Were the drivers dead? Did they need to be rebuilt? I'm about to pick up some 14s for 200$. I got mt meter with me to do some readings. Just wondering what the options are if the woofers are dead. Thanks.
The coils were shot. I had to recone their woofers IIRC
@millervintagehifi3034 thank you for the reply! I got my pair and someone glued new surrounds ON TOP of the gaskets with a thick hot glue gun type of glue. Some of the worst work I've ever seen. I'm going to try and remove them without damaging the original cones. Oh yeah they ohm'd out fine so I got lucky there!
This model Marantz vs a Kenwood Kr-10000 iii ? I have a kenwood thats been sitting here but when i went to set it up it didnt power on ...somewhat local guy said he can fix it but who knows what that's gonna cost me. Someone i know has a working Marantz and wants to trade for the kenwood and some cash . Not sure whay to do
The Kenwood is much more appealing to me. Quads present all sorts of opportunities for issues.
I have just purchased a pl530, atuo tonearm doesn't reach the edge of the record and autoreturn doesn't go all the way home, can you give me any advice cheers...
Likely just a drop point adjustment and missing foam on the return mechanism.
Yep. I broke it right off. Was focused on getting the bulbs in and I ham handed right on the pointer and snap it went.
Been there…done that
Thanks for the warning! I am completely technically incompetent, yet still somehow overconfident in my ability. Instead of taking this apart and getting frustrated and throwing away the pieces after they sit on my workbench for two months,, I’ll just take it to my repair guy. Cheers!
Good luck!
A 1050 recently a couple weeks ago went for 3700.00 on Ebay when it was auctioned off... Not buy it now. I have one close to mint in the original box that I got from a family that lost their son in the war and kept it for years. Bless their heart. I hooked it up and it sounds beautiful. I put it back in the box for preservation because I use my SA 9100 in one room and my SA 7800 in another room. I have a 850 also where it was peeling and I took off all of the peeling which had a lighter color finish and now looks new. I love Pioneer units.
$3700 is quite a bit of money.
@@millervintagehifi3034 Yes too much . Somebody wanted it though,
I replaced those caps underneath the motor base by carefully inserting the tip of the soldering iron to the gap between the PCB and the motor base to reach the caps solder joints. For the feet, they are just stuck with springs inside. After removing the screws, you just have to pull them out straight.
Thanks!
Thanks! Just repaired mine
Glad to hear that the video was helpful.
Great video, I also have a Marantz 2285b that I purchased new on 7/7/1979. It has exactly the same symptoms as the one in your video. I also tried the same preliminary things you did with the same results. I don’t have the skills to get into the circuit board like you did but the dealer I purchased it from is still in business (Team Electronics dba Pflantz Electronics). Guess I will be making a trip to see them. Thanks again for your video.
Hopefully it's an easy problem to get sorted out.
I had this receiver, i wish i would have kept it .
I know where you can find one if you're ever near Omaha :)
I used a 4 track reel to reel with mine and i loved it. When you have a different channel speaker in each corner you can really feel like your right in the center of the recording.
I've not had the opportunity to listen to quad sound.
Excellent review! I own a TD 165 which has the dust cover with the molded hinges that slide over the pins on either side of the base. Definitely a weaker design as the "hinge" on the left side of the dust cover has broken so now I remove the dust cover whenever I play vinyl. I've replaced the belt several times and the turntable still works as new. I paid $125 when I purchased the turntable new in the mid-1970's
That's great to hear...glad you enjoyed the review :)
Would love to have one....
They are definitely a sleeper sound-wise. Very warm sounding receiver.
27:23 LOL Well, we are all making mistakes. I found this video because I thought something was wrong with my motor. Nope! I have always had a direct drive, okay. Got this heirloom and guess what? Gotta connect the belt to the motor for it to work silly! Welp, at least you saved me $75 USD on a diagnostic. LOL, I feel like a real dumbass. Thanks, good man! You have your like and sub.
Thanks and I'm glad the video was helpful!
I have this receiver and it does have great sound quality. It is a large and very heavy unit.
We have it running at 402 vinyl and paired with CS-99As...it's audio bliss :)
I have never seen that QX-9900. My only quad gear is a QC-800A preamp. Those are pretty rare also.
I haven't come across it in the wild either...
My table is fixed, how do I kill the Sperrring?
Not sure I understand…
Đẹp tuyệt a
I agree...a great looking receiver.
@@millervintagehifi3034 ok
so i can get the pl 55x for 135 bucks all working is it worth me grabbing ?
Sounds like it could be a decent deal
I wonder if it has STEREO AM??
Not sure…
What are the resistors and greenie caps across the (4) large capacitors for? My GFA555 doesn’t have them.
I'm guessing the resistors are bleeder resistors...not sure about the caps (what they would do).
I cannot get the steel plate to come off, you made it look so easy. What am I missing??????? Ty
The platter? Tap the spindle with a screwdriver handle and few times.
Our movers decided to cut all of the tonearm cables and tape the actual arm part to the inside of the plastic cover... No idea why any intelligent being would think that was a good idea, but our turntable has been sitting around in storage for 8 years now. Thought "I can't really ruin it any more, let's just try to fix it" and I was wondering if I'd have to replace all of this, but I might as well buy new with the price of the parts. I never even considered replacing the tonearm wires, but I think this might be the solution to getting this thing working again. Time to get my ass kicked. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck!
I have the SX727 Receiver 😊
Gear review in the queue for the SX 727 as well.
You did'nt do anything to the dragging noise at the startup. 😳 There is a spring pushing the pulley against the plate attached to the motor spindle. You should lower that plate a bit.
I actually figured that out much later on (this was my primary table for a bit). It’s since moved on to greener pastures.
i have a sx-434 and couldn't figure out why all the lights were dim, it was the line voltage selector switch, it was set at 240v i switched it to 120v and everything works excellent!
Great to hear!
I'm having an issue where the tone arm gets stuck in the same spots and loops on near mint records
Id check the guide rod that the tonearm assembly glides on…probably needs a good cleaning or other TLC.
hey the stylus on my td 165 is missing, do you happen to know where i could get a replacement?
Depends on what cart is on it...I use LPgear or eBay to find replacement styli.
@@millervintagehifi3034 thanks i think i found one
Hi, I have a ps-x5 that has the same fast movement issue you had later in the video. Is the broken wire on the sensor board obvious? Do you attribute the repair more to the broken tone arm wire or the led swap?
LED swap.
@millervintagehifi3034 thank you for your reply
Nice job looks great
Thanks!
The 850 does have real wood veneer.
Thanks for the confirmation!
Thank you for your time; the x3x series is a great sounding series of receivers. The SX-xx50's is a beautiful series of receivers; I'm an original SX-1050 owner here (biased maybe.) I had mine completely restored during COVID; significant financial investment but worth every penny, I listen to it every day.
My ranking for the 70s lineups would be the x3x, xx50, x2x, then xx80. I prefer the SX 1000TA/D over all of them (late 60s). The 990/2500 (late 60s) series is my least favorite cosmetically. I just had a 1980 across the bench...review will be added to the queue soon. Never thought I would see one :)
ie: What sort of SHUNT would I require to create a FSD of an 8ohm speaker's line-feed terminals
Engineering like that is beyond my scope. That would be an interested thread on Audiokarma to follow to see what folks much more knowledgeable that I would recommend.
OK so it "jumped" (so would you if a giant touched your leads (hands) across an electric fence). What I need to know is this, how to wire these things, across a speaker's terminals, to know what the VU reading is, when you have many different channels all powering speakers.. without any VU meter on the amp itself, as the amp only has two channels whereas the speakers come off different circuits that originated from the amp, but get further split before the speakers see the currents..
No idea…if I wanted an external VU meter I’d personally just purchase one, but I have more $$ than time to figure such things out these days :)
Mine didn’t have a jumper so we use cables to connect the plugs. Is that a bad thing?
RCA cables are perfectly fine.
hi, I have the same amp and love it, but today I turn it on and sound low, I send it for a recap 5 years ago (cost too much) and been working good till today, can you help me on what it could be?
I'd look for a dirty pot or switch first...failing that, it literally could be anything.
hi, thanks for the quick response, I´ll do that, I have 70% volume on the left channel, I´ll buy a contact cleaner first and give it a try...hope is that.
What new camera did you get?
Sony Z-EV10.
Thank you for the video!! huge help, so happy to have my turntable fully working again:)
Great to hear that it helped!
Nice looking receiver. I recently found a mint Toshiba SA420 for $5 ,that also looks a lot like an SX650/750. I have been wanting a Pioneer SX model, but this will fit the bill for now.
A perfectly acceptable replacement :)
Someone just asked me to check out a 730 Twin that has been sitting in a closet for many years apparently. This is my first HK. Gonna check the fuses and all that before running it through my dim bulb. There appears to be capacitors or something that looks like them connected to the A speaker jacks om the back. WTF? I couldn't tell without my reading glasses. I haven't looked at it since bringing it home. Wanted to watch some videos on HK's before I dig into it.
I love the "it was working when I put it in the closet 20 years ago" comment from folks swearing that their gear works. About 95% of the time there were issues that relegated the equipment to the closet :) Cap may have been a 'duct tape and bailing wire' repair for some speaker pop at power on/off?? Here's an AK post on it: audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/what-are-these-across-speaker-terminals.1054229/
@@millervintagehifi3034 they were .01uF caps on the speakers jacks. I took them off and it has no issues. Needs a lamp kit and new pre in/out jumpers. Cleaned the exterior, pots and switches. Works well. Someone added a homemade relay protection board underneath and siliconed a relay to one of the transformers. They also replaced one output transistor with a different part number. Somehow it works. Waiting for the lamps.
