UNCSA Presents: William Grant-Stills - African Dancer from Suite for Violin and Piano (1943)
Kevin Lawrence, violin
Dmitri Shteinberg, piano
The Harlem Renaissance was a flowering of African-American intellectual and cultural creativity spanning the 1920s and 1930s. William Grant Still, often called the dean of African American composers, was closely connected with this movement, and the inspirations for this Suite are three sculptures created in the 1930’s by artists also associated with it. This movement vividly conveys the ecstatic emotional freedom we sense in sculptor Richmond Barthé’s "African Dancer."
This performance was on a recital "The Joyful Life - Kevin Lawrence and Dmitri Shteinberg in recital" performed in November of 2022.

Great sound! Some good stuff here. All I would say about mouthpiece practice is... some very bad habits can be formed if not careful. The predominant one being a restricted sound on the instrument due to the good musician naturally trying to sound good on the mouthpiece. It took me many years and a broken embouchure to work out the sound on the mouthpiece was supposed to sound big and airy as opposed to focused which many people, if not warned about will naturally go to. Sadly, too late for me, but younger brass players... please be careful. A lovely Tuba sound on display hear by the way, very rarely the case on RUclips videos. I would love to hear you in a British style Brass Band. Your sound would be perfect.

"...lip slurs..." more than just a 'misnomer'. I was passionate about the trumpet from 4th grade-high school. 1st chair throughout. However, I had a secret problem that prevented me from progressing like others. I heard about lip slurs and began years of trying to make my lips cause a no-valve slur. Naive, yes, but who in their youth is assertive enough to ask for help?. I took the term literally. And it eventually caused to quit during college due to frustration and disappointment. In my opinion, the term lip slur should NEVER have been coined. It wasn't until I happened upon Claude Gordon principles that I heard the emphasis on use of the tongue. Unfortunately I had abandoned the horn for 25 yrs . Thank you for your beginning comment about it being a misnomer. Truly. jg

So the entire weight of the arm sinks into the fingerboard? making the pad of the finger flexible? or is it a rolling motion as some players describe?
