The unique Fiat 126p SAM - the Polish car you've never heard of
Reckon you know your Fiat 126s? Well here's one you almost certainly won't have seen before, because it's a home-built special courtesy of Marian Kotlicki, an aircraft mechanic and aviation enthusiast who lived in Poland. He owned just five cars in his entire life (he died in 2017), and he built each one of them.
Built in 1985 with a glassfibre body, the swoopy rear-engined car is known as the SAM, which is a generic name given to home-built cars in Poland. SAM is acronym for Samochod Amatorski Motoru, or 'Motor's Amateur Car'. Motor was for many decades the only automotive magazine in Poland and in the late fifties it popularised home-built cars, coming up with the generic term SAM. As a ...

Is it a car? The weird and (not so) wonderful Larmar
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.9 часов назад
Another video from the fabulous treasure trove that is the Lane Motor Museum, the Larmar was the world's narrowest car. If you can call it a car. A Peel P50 is positively corpulent in comparison - that's more than a foot wider. Made between 1946 and 1951, just a few Larmars were made and very few survive. This one has been restored to what must surely be better than when it was new.
The story of Le Carabe; contender for the smallest car ever made
Просмотров 53812 часов назад
In 1936, Frenchman Hippolyte Delimal attempted to create the world's smallest car. Known as La Carabe, or 'Ground Beetle', his tiny contraption was claimed to be capable of 118mpg, and had a top speed of 24mph. Hippolyte documented the trials and tribulations of building Le Carabe, and it was that 63-page manuscript that allowed Jeff lane and his team to build this replica Ground Beetle. For mo...
Mercedes 130: the forgotten predecessor to the 170h
Просмотров 903Месяц назад
It's reckoned that there's just one Mercedes 130 in the UK, and it's owned by Ian Tisdale. Here, Ian tells all about his 130 (including what is seemingly the world's most complicated transmission to use), as well as how it compares with the Tatra T97 that he also owns, and which is reviewed elsewhere on Below The Radar. The car is currently for sale on Car & Classic: www.carandclassic.com/aucti...
Exploring Rodger Dudding's incredible collection of 450 cars
Просмотров 48 тыс.6 месяцев назад
One of the world's most prolific collectors, Rodger Dudding has amassed more than 450 cars since the late 1960s. Known as Studio 434 and based in Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, Rodger's collection is astonishingly diverse and includes all sorts of rarities, as well as plenty of more mainstream (but no less desirable) classic cars. And of course there are the 24 Aston Martin Lagondas, the car wit...
Monica 560 - talking to the man who owns THREE of France's luxury car that never was
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.8 месяцев назад
When I visited the Isle of Man Motor Museum in 2023 I filmed a brief video with museum owner Darren Cunningham, because that's all I had time for. He owns the first two prototypes made, along with the unfinished car number 6. The plan is to put together a more complete video when I return to the museum in 2024, but after the unexpected popularity of my recent museum overview, and viewers saying...
Custom Cloud: the Chevrolet that thinks it's a Rolls-Royce
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.9 месяцев назад
In the mid-1970s, Florida-based Jon Tedesco hit upon the bright idea of dressing up Chevrolet Monte Carlos as Rolls-Royces, and unsurprisingly the project was doomed to fail. Tedesco called his created the Custom Cloud, and predictably just a few were made. One survives in the Isle of Man Motor Museum, and here, museum owner Darren Cunningham tells all about this kitsch confection.
Below The Radar heaven - automotive obscurities galore in the Isle of Man Motor Museum
Просмотров 19 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Darren and Denis Cunningham have built up what must be the premier collection of obscure cars (and other vehicles) in the UK. In this film we take a look at what's in the collection, including no fewer than three Monicas, a quartet of Fiat Samanthas and an eyebrow-raising four Facel Vega Excellences. Well, four might be stretching things a bit because some of them are hardly what you'd call pri...
The story of the Clan Crusader
Просмотров 10 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Ex-Lotus men Paul Hassauer and John Frayling tried to sell their affordable GRP-bodied coupé with Imp running gear, but the project was hit by a series of problems and relatively few were made before the project went belly up. But the Clan Crusader was sold on and revived, only to go through multiple iterations before morphing into the Alfa Romeo-engined Clan Clover in 1984. Sadly that project ...
The unique Ferrari Testarossa targa built by EBS
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In 1985, one lucky American Ferrari enthusiast was lucky enough to be in a position to commission Belgian coachbuilder EBS to convert a brand new Testarossa into a unique targa. The car is now owned by an equally lucky Adam Bartlett, who in this video provides some insight into what EBS got up to and also what this one-off Ferrari is like to drive.
Jeff Lane tells the story behind the Scootacar
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Looking as though it might topple over at any moment, the three-wheeled Scootacar was made in Leeds between 1957 and 1964. Few were made and very few survive, so the one in Jeff's collection is quite a rarity...
Jeff Lane tells all about the Zundapp Janus
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.11 месяцев назад
For just two years (1957-1958), Zundapp produced the bizarre Janus mid-engined microcar, which was symmetrical across its centre. Here, Jeff Lane of the Lane Motor Museum tells its story.
Is it a plane? Is it a car? The fascinating story of the Fascination
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
Jeff Lane tells all about the 1969 Fascination, which when unveiled in 1969 was marketed with the slogan 'Tomorrow's car today'. One of the most bizarre-looking cars ever created, the Fascination was truly a product of the Jet Age. Sorry for the distortion with the sound. This was the first time with my new microphone set and I thought I'd set it up correctly. Turns out I needed to turn down th...

Triumph Fury - interview with owner Jane Weitzmann
i see these in the shopping malls a lot. Activated by the insertion of a 2 dollar coin!
Wish you talked about it more, BUT It is a car I wouldn't have otherwise had known and I'm Italian!!
It is rather a short video and apologies for that. This was the first film that I did with Jeff, although it's the last one that I've posted, and when we were chatting there just didn't seem to be much to say. As you say, the film tells you that this car exists, even if it doesn't offer a huge amount of insight into it.
This one makes a Trabant a Cadillac.
Drop the intros and exos.
Built to fit the gate, have a new gate fitted
you seem like a delightful fellow to be around. Don't have a helicopter? Just buy one.
Car salesman: "If that Challenger is a bit above your budget, I have something for you I think we can make work"
This is the kind of car Droopy Dog drives.
I went on holiday in Amsterdam in 2022. I was shocked at the number of little old single seater cars for the disabled that were still licensed and driving. The newer style were EV, as expected, but there was plenty of ancient scooter and cycle powered ones. They tended to park wherever they wanted, by bicycles etc. Very cool.
Pretty cool, ahead of it's time.
I found number three car for sale for $5,000 needs work, I'd like to put a real rolls Grill on there. And a set of real Rolls-Royce hubcaps. Which can be done, using a set of Ford steel wheels., which will bolt up. And a set of shadows two tail lights but the upper lenses should be red because how do you make the yellow blinker Blink by itself with an American wiring harness?
So, did you manage to make a video with the Cyclops?
Sorry - no. I thought I had, but it was the Le Carabe that was filmed. Maybe one day I'll get back to Nashville and do some more films, this time with better sound, having worked out how to use my radio mics!
Brilliant car, so unfortunte the events that ment the original wasn't able to be manufactred for longer, either in the UK or Cyprus. Impressive that there are still such a high percentage of the originals still on the road.
So it’s a front engine, rear wheel drive, with a flat 4 engine sports car, man I wish they made something like this today. *Coughs* gr86
Correct apart from the cylinder count. It's a flat-twin engine, unlike the GR86...
@ oh no way sorry I thought it was 4 my bad
Imagine driving that while wearing a gorilla costume! No one will believe anyone who tells them about it
Hunslet Scootacar, Hunslet Engine Company. South Leeds.
I bet jay leno doesnt have one
I remember the Mercedes from the NEC. I've also spoken to Ian on a couple of occasions, when he took the Tatra 87 to a local show.
Super car and a great enthusiast, but if I can be permitted one tiny nit-pick: I'm surprised to hear it referred to as a "6 cylinder Herald". It wasn't. It was a model on its' own, with its' own name, not simply a sporty version of the Herald.
old but nice and rare-unique!
Thanks for producing this video. I was the creator of these cars and it’s great to see you’re still talking about them. It was the most fun of any of my businesses. I found one a couple years ago and am restoring it.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment - what a fascinating project! And good luck with your restoration!
Just found one for sale in Chicago for around 14k which is what brought me to this video
Very nice car. what gearbox and overdrive unit did you finally upgrade to please? was thinking of adding overdrive to our car. cheers
It's the original gearbox but with Dolomite 1850 internals because they're stronger. The overdrive is a J-type - I think an overdrive is essential on these cars because the engine is screaming on the motorway otherwise! I've also fitted a 3.27 diff, which is much more relaxed than the 3.63 that I originally fitted - which is much better than the 3.89 that the factory fitted.
his wife is not a GOLD DIGGER i dont care what everyone else says 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Fond memories of these cars. It would be a crime do do it on all but the most basket case car but I would love to see a Hayabusa engine grafted into one of these built for hill climbs.
Why this fashion for photgraphing from 6 inches of the ground.
I am looking for one. Are there any leads?
I had one of these in 1970. The body design is great but the 2 cylinder was a piece of s$%t. Although the car had low mileage there were severe problems with oil leakage. Also the car would overheat and the problem could not be found. One solution was to take off the air filter caps which of course would then inhale dust etc. Ultimately I got rid of the lemon and the new owner installed a Celica engine which made all the difference. Your decision to get one but a better choice would be the Honda S series. Those were peppy little cars.
This really is a great video with lots of cars I haven't ever seen before. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful story! Thanks for the upload!
Wonderful beauty of a car, wanna have❤😊
Cannot say I particularly care about the pop-up lights over something a Spitfire-like fixed-light or say a Stag sportscar (rather than grand tourer) style arrangement, yet the Fury should have been built in place of the TR5/TR6. It would have certainly benefited from the Triumph 2000 GT fastback prototype's hotter 115 hp 2-litre as the entry-level engine followed by the 150 hp 2.5-litre PI, later replaced by other engine options.
He buys cars that he likes. Solid.👌 Love the old Land Rovers. Now owned by Tata, some will now be built in India.😫 Thanks for taking us on the tour.👍
darn that is one ugly car
95 HP fury!! a sheep in wolf's clothing I guess.
Well - that's just how it was back then!
Incredible video. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing!
In 1958 I saw pictures of the Mopetta for the first time. It was advertised for sale at a price of just over 1000 DM. At the time I was 12 years old, and to me it seemed to be the ideal car, much better than Volkswagens, Fords, Opels, Mercedes and all the other rubbish on the streets. I wanted to have one... Now, a few years older, I can only see it as a toy.
Liberals sold out the Industry to China just like American liberals did. Dumb
We met him at a Car Show near Shenley, very nice bloke too
Spotted the SM! 😍
Who is this woman? no disrespect at all meant but the interwebs is void on this lady apart from these car vids
She's a car collector. What more do you need to know?
What a lovely chap, I could sit in an old pub with an open fire and drink pints of bitter and have cheese cobs all afternoon and talk about old cars 😂😂😂
450 cars soon to be for sale.
Where and how did he make the money to get all these??? WTF???
I dont believe they are all his. People probably are paying him to store their cars there.
There are many more cars there, which I couldn't film because they are owned by people who pay Rodger to store them. These are the ones that I could film because they are all owned by Rodger...
More of an interview than a look at the cars
He alone increases the car per capita
All operwational!
Come on the UK cars/brands lost because there where crapy made.
Not to mention the primitive engineering. Spot on
Yes sure true for some but does not cover all brands, many disappeared because they could not change to the modern way of making cars as a monocoque, and the age old problem of making them cheap enough. After that then your comment is right since British Leyland took numerous brands to the morgue with some appalling design and build quality, not all their cars but enough that the Japanese then other makes broke into the market. By that time its too late but at the very least some names are still around because of foreign money and companies. I have some knowledge on this because my grandfather was one of those makers who stopped at the end of the 50’s after making nearly 2000 cars and I do drive my Morris Traveller often but also very fond of my modern BMW mini. It was meant to be, even the cars considered awful until recently are gathering a following.
It's because of greedy b-----ds like this that normal people can't enjoy classic motoring.23 lagondas? Schlump brothers springs to mind.
Wonderful car, wonderful owner. Great video!
Amazing collection. I’d heard of it but not seen it. Folks like Rodger and Leno won’t be around forever, I hope these sort of collections can remain in their current form for we car lovers to view in the future. Thanks for sharing Rodger.
Goodness I see a Morgan 😍
