Hi, I have already been playing around with the Tactical Ops music. I was surprised to find that it is not done the way tracker music typically is - instead of the individual instrument samples and note information in the UMX file, it is actually just playing pre-recorded chunks of the songs, which limits my ability to properly add new layers, but I can still put some fresh paint and polish on the overall mix.

Oh yeah if you mean the Bandcamp stuff, I did consolidate a couple of shorter albums into one larger album.

Cool I did not know that. Now that you mention it they do look similar. The green glow of the water also reminds me of Unreal.

@@VintageModernRemixes Liquid, glow and luminous liquids (water. acid) look better in UT than in Unreal. It looks nice in Unreal but they made a lot of work to make it look even better in UT. By textures they took, I mean these 2 opposite grilles for acid. In Unreal there were a lot of them on alien spaceships.

I'm so curious how you went about composing this because it sounds like you extracted and isolated some instruments of the original track while remixing others in another program? Or just recreated it from scratch. Either way, it's freakin' awesome.

I am so happy to hear from Deus Ex listeners as I've dumped hundreds of hours into these, yet the Deus Ex content gets next to zero traffic. The algorithms hate me apparently.

This type of game music is in an old format called "tracker" or "mod" music. Similar to MIDI but it is its own thing. All the song's samples and note information is stored in the game, so I pull out the original instruments and rebuild it in Logic Pro. So you're hearing a mixture of the original instruments and new instruments, and I usually always replace the bass and drums at minimum which makes the whole mix sound huge. I'm going to revise The Enemy Within at some point using my latest skills and tools.

@@VintageModernRemixes I know right! Your content is hella underrated. I always thought about how things could be different if DX wasn't as much of a niche cult classic among the retro shooters as it ended up being. But with recent times (pandemic definitely helping), there seems to be a noticeable rise of more content being uploaded, such as gameplay tips and tricks, and highlighting the many secrets to the game. I think it's awesome more people are discovering this masterpiece in any way they end up doing. I hope you get more subs man, you definitely deserve it. :)

I noticed recently about how the songs can be opened with certain programs and I love just picking out different instruments and beats with OpenMPT and listening to them. I could do it for hours lol. Listening to them makes me realize Alexander Brandon is a musical genius, and you're his faithful successor. :)

Yeah I have been playing it a lot lately and it is definitely hard. Soon as you upgrade your car it gives you much harder races, so I end up staying on a fully upgraded car way longer than I should. It's just something about the atmosphere of the game, largely the music that just kept me coming back over the years

When I was younger for some reason I found it to be a very slow part of the game but now I love it. Every time I get dropped on that Paris rooftop it feels like the game is only just beginning

I have many fond memories of deleting text files to free up hard drive space (1 kilobyte at a time!) or nursing nearly-dead floppies to get them to read one more time to copy something off. Or having to fuck with AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to allocate enough EMS memory to get a certain game to work. Or... well you get the idea. It was fun as hell.

I'll check that one out. I feel the entire genre fell along with it. Doesn't matter to me a whole lot since I can just keep playing them, and there's endless custom maps out there I still have yet to try. I'm not a fan of infinite sequels and I feel the original games are plenty good enough that I don't need shiny textures and built-in custom hats. They nailed it the first time around.

Agreed. I'm turning 40 in six months. We were lucky to be born into that chapter of the tech/gaming evolution. The technology was incredible but it had not yet ruined society. 🤪 Don't think of life as almost over, it's only half over! 🎂

Haha I always noticed that inflection in the guy's voice but I never knew what to make of it. I think your interpretation is spot on now that you mention it. I was always more focused on the way JC sounds a bit proud of himself when he says he killed him hah

It's the best. I always liked to grab the Redeemer and then go up to the roof and jump down to a ledge on the back of the tower where no one will see me. Good times.

This "tracker" style did vanish around 2000 but it was also way older than I thought, around since the Amiga days of the 80s
