What a fantastic guy and a great endorsement.
great lense one of the all time greats
Im a year late where you were approaching 5k. You're over 10k subscribers now (including myself). Congratulations!
Thank you so much :)
Thanks Emilie! Both Susie P and I were on your Maine Macro workshop and we are headed to Antarctica in 2 weeks. This was perfect timing for us. Thank you so much! Purchases made. 😊
Very pleased with OM-1 MK2 & 150-600 f/5-6.3 is, by accident unintentionally used 10,000 ISO I was blown away by the image quality for micro 4/3 sensor at such high ISO, I feel I have no problem using 6500 ISO if I need to without losing significant image quality at such high ISO.
Hopefully the end of this year, OM systems will introduce all new OM-1X with bigger dials and buttons as well as more protruding shutter release that is more easily field when wearing winter gloves, and hopefully we’ll introduce an all new higher resolution sensor.
One of the things that OM systems needs to fix other future OM-1 models is the shutter release button. It is impossible to feel when wearing winter gloves, when one is not wearing her gloves it’s not an issue, it was easier to feel the shutter release button on my old E-M1 original when wearing winter gloves that is now with my new OM-1 MK2.
I’ve had a bad experience with magnets, sucking in the cold, too bad there was not an alternative to magnets, for this style of glove especially when it’s -20 Celsius or colder.
Oh no. Sorry to hear. I never had an issue with the magnets on those gloves and I wore them in extremely cold temperatures.
Haha. Emilie, I watched your video while taking a break from editing my own winter gloves video that I just shot yesterday! Too funny. Great minds think alike. 😘
Ahah it is the season!! Can't wait to watch your video and see what you recommend :)
I used Promaster gloves for years and then lost one at Conowingo Dam... I bought a pair with the discount. Thanks!
Glad you were able to get a discount on the gloves! Don't lose this one. Although gloves are like socks, they always seem to disappear!!
yes no-one wants frost bite when out and about in the biting cold. I have looked at the Promaster ones but the sizing guide isn't very helpful.....sorry to ask Emile (or anyone else that has them) but what size do you have and have you increased the size over what you would normally have for gloves? Thank you. Have to say I remember being on holiday in Finland and it dropped to-32 C, could have definitely done with quality gloves there. Most of the time it was ok if you were moving but any length of time being stopped definitely lead to excruciating pain in finger tips and some frozen tears.
I haven't increased my glove size with the pro master. They are a cozy fit and I like it.
Where I am on the west coast of Canada, it has been so warm and raining all fall and winter. I think I need a super raincoat. Love your videos.
:) Cold and rainy is no fun but great for moody pictures too. I have my k-way for such weather. Expensive but excellent quality.
A great help again Emilie I am learning so much from you and Lee Hoy hoping to put it all into practise next week thank you
Seems like finding a good pair of gloves is a real challenge. Some aren't warm enough, others don't breath so your hands just sweet then get cold after a while. The Promaster look like they may be the glove I am looking for.
It is always a challenge. Pro masters are pretty great in most situations. That is definitely my go-to gloves.
I picked up a pair of pro master gloves when I bought my current camera. 25% off would have been a nice discount!
Maybe you need a second pair? :) Yes that 25% from Hunt's Photo and Video is great!
You have perfect timing. I love going for a walk in a fresh snow. There is a certain "mood" that, sometimes, I can capture in a photo. Animals are quiet, trees have blankets, the brook has snow up around its ears, and you can *see the wind*. And of course, hands are cold. 😀
Ahaha yes I am the same, I love winter photography minus the cold!
❤nice video
Wow! The photo is the wasp is amazing!
Ice cream with hot chocolate sauce is even better than chocolate icecream, Emilie 😊
I'm sure it's wonderful. I'm agonizing over whether to spend US$1,600 on a used 300mm f4 PRO or if, at around US$800 on the used market, the 100-400mm f5-6.3 is "good enough." I've been using the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO with the MC-20 teleconverter, and it's NOT good enough for that application. The 40-150 is a great lens for that medium telephoto range, but it can't resolve enough detail with the teleconverter to use for supertelephoto applications like wildlife when I still have to crop a lot.
Hi, Emilie. I´m still using the BBF, because in my case (macro) I think than the pros are more than the cons.
Firmware was more that 75% tranfered from phone when app said battery was empty and emty battery om camera screen. Turned off and on again and camera battery is 48%. Guess I need to charge battery to 100% and try again. A warning would have fine.
Hi Emilie, a bit off topic maybe. At least not on BBF which I have had on Nikon for years. Since my complete change to OM I do not use BBF but that is besides the point. My objective here is to give you credit for your videos which I [as non-bird photographer] enjoy a lot. You have a very pleasant way of moving from introduction into the heart of the matter. You are very informative and there is always something to bring along on my own photo journey. Then there is your calm voice, your positive approach, the occasional laugh and not least the way you convey the message / topic. Thank you.
Great video! Thank you! Just ordered the OM5 and researching macro lens. Is this the one that is advertised now on the website, as it states it is weatherproof? 😊 I wonder if it would be good to photograph aquarium fish?
Olympus omd 5 mkiii avec 12-200 de Olympus , super léger et weatherproof , une optique sous évaluer , bonne journée .
yes it is true! I have to admit that I have never used the 12-200. I really need to get my hand on this lens and try it!
How do you quickly deal with it when your camera focuses on a branch in the foreground?
So OM-1 mark II has been better at not focusing on branches for me but when that happens, Manial focusing as I am in CA-F + MF
@@EmilieT Pressing the shutter doesn't mess up the manual focus (since you have to half press the shutter on the way to fully pressing it)? Maybe I should give this a try.
I was to copy your c1 to c4 settings. Do I need to adjust some of the cog settings as that video included bbf? I don't do bbf either as like you say the af is well advanced now
I am going to release all my settings in a cheat sheet with lots of tips if you are interested. Will come out next week on my website. You can adjust AF-ON in the clog or just leave it and don't touch it.
@EmilieT ooh yes, will look forward to that!
When I purchased my 150 to 400 mm 4.5. I had a protective cover ready and waiting for it. I took it out of the box and put it straight on the lens. It’s never came off. Is there a good reason for all but one? He by the way is a proper wild photographer while the others never uses a protective cover.
I never used a cover. Some of the covers I have seen were prone to mold which I do not want. I never had any issues with my lens and the white was designed for specific reason so I do not want to cover it.
@ Emilie that’s ridiculous. I’ve been birdwatching for 40 years always had a sock over my telescope and now always a sock over my 2 lenses all used in wet conditions. The white design you mentioned is claimed to keep the lens cool in sun and extreme heat conditions you very rarely venture into. Why is it professional photographers? I follow on RUclips that possess far greater skills in yourself have their lens protected in a coat?
I have used BBF also since i started but since Bird detect get so god i stoped. Now i have all target C-AF + bird detect on the front and when i switch the leveller i get singel point on BBF. In that way i can manage all situations very fast. I also always use C-AF+MF so i can turn the focussing when ever i want. :)
Yes those are my settings too. it makes my life easier!
Thank you Emilie, super interesting topic. As most of my subjects are stationary, I never really felt the need for BBF. So, not using BBF frees up one button on my OM-1 for another function. BTW I use the lever on the AEL button to swap the front and rear dials from Aperture/Shutter speed to become WB/ISO. This works very well for me.
I love to see how everybody customizes their camera. We are so lucky to be able to do that.
Don't you wish Sandhill Cranes would walk right up to you in New England? Spectacular portraits! With any modern camera, BBF is really only needed these days for small birds with lots of distracting twigs, when the camera can't find the bird.
I sure wish ahah :)
Interesting to see the setups you use. I've never used BBF for the reason you say. I have a similar setup but I use Auto-ISO and put exposure compensation on the front dial so I can quickly bump up exposure on backlight birds etc. I set my shutter speed and let the camera decide the ISO - one less thing to deal with!
Agree!
Oh Emilie how do you teach "an old dog new tricks?" I have been a BBF shooter for so many yrs I'm not sure if I can switch without "palpations". I will try to get up the courage to give it a try & let you know. Do you shoot in manual or aperture priority?
Hi Cindy! We can try it at the end of January at Hunt's! But you know if you are happy the way you shoot then it is great and the most important. I shoot in M mode.
Those Sandhills cranes are amazing. Beautiful photos. What an experience for you! I saw a family of them with a baby one last June, in southern Alberta. It was fantastic to watch them. But sadly they were across a pond so I was unable to get very close. Also, do you think the OM-1 Mark 1 still needs BBF? I go in and out of using BBF on my old G9 but I don’t seem to need it as much on the G9ii. And on my OM1 Mark 1, I often struggle with focus when birds are behind branches. Maybe BBF will help on that camera. Anyhow glad you saw some great birds and animals in Florida.
Oh how lucky that you were able to observe a baby sandhill crane! i am considering going back to Florida just for baby sandhill crane season :) I think both OM do well without the BBF honestly. Mark II does better with branches but again, 1 focus point of switching to fully manual might be only option in some cases.
I just started using BBF a week ago! I’m so behind the times 🤣🤣 Fantastic shots of the cranes!!
Thank you. Well maybe you are ahead of the times :) MAybe I will go back. Who knows? It's the fun of photography.
You have to make a video on the reactions on your non BBF discovery. What do your pro friends say as first reactions and later reactions 😊
That's a good idea!!
....i agree. Me too, no more BBF for birds..... Many thanks for sharing, Emilie, and happy new year....
Thank you and happy new year to you too!
I'm glad to hear that you're embracing NO-BBF! Since moving to the OM-1 three years ago, with the amazing eye-tracking focus, I realized that BBF was no longer needed. I now only used it when shooting landscapes.
I agree!
I'm not a wildlife photographer, so I tend to shoot in aperture priority with my OM1. I love being able to control iso with the front dial though. I wish my Nikon cameras allowed this. On my Nikons, you have to press a button and then use the dials to change iso. The OM1 is a much better arrangement. No button to push. To me it's faster and more intuitive, and I never have to take my eyes off the evf.
I agree, it is so nice to be able to have all those easy customizations.
Welcome back to frigid NH. Congrats on checking a couple of birds off the list. Years ago I came across boar in NH while I was kayaking. They apparently escaped from an exotic game preserve. I was very glad to be at a safe distance but wished I had a good camera back then.
Thank you ahaha! Ah yes I know a few escaped from that preserve. I should go over there and check that out one day. Too bad the preserve is only accessible to a few selected people. I would love to walk that land!
I continue to use BBF with the front dial for shutter speed and the read dial for ISO (thanks for the tip). Moving my thumb from the AF-ON button to the the real dial can be done quickly.
Happy to help with tips :)
Pity is only for Olympus
Thank you Emilie for this video. I would get confused with the dials when I was trying to photograph birds quickly. I changed the front dial to speed dial and the back dial to aperture. It works great. Thanks again for this tip
Glad you like it!
Thanks for the recommendations. I’m planning on buying a monopod to use with EM1 and 300mm lens when out in field, love to shoot birds. I’m 5’9”, 78 yrs old. Can I use my Benro gimbal on this monopod, or do I need a sturdier monopod (was also looking at leofoto mpq series)? Love your videos, BTW!
Thank you Jeffrey! You should be as long as you treat this as a monopod, meaning you need to stay next to it and hold it with a telephoto and gimbal on.
My resolution is to have more fun getting out with my cameras to shoot photos and video. And get my head round more detailed photo editing and video post production. I am off to Madeira in 8 days time for two weeks and then one week after returning off on my trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica for 16 days. Wishing you a very happy, stress free, peaceful New Year Emilie.
Happy new year to you and have a fantastic time traveling!
I have to admit that I never really got the hype of back button focusing. Maybe I just don't shoot the sort of subject that benefit from it.
Merci pour le mémo sur le câble !! Cette vidéo m'a permis de réaliser que dans ma voiture le câble USB-C ne convient pas à mon OM-5, donc je vais en mettre un dans la boîte à gants 😁📸📸
De rien!
