    Interesting discourse. A complicated subject but one major area I have identified is that the community is constantly talking about lists rather than examining player decision making. In my humble opinion there is a big difference between games of war and or tournament play vs actual wargaming. The most challenging games I have seen and done involve connected historical scenarios where you must think and operate at both the operations and tactical level. Perhaps. I think people need to start to explore what wargaming has to offer especially if you are historically minded. My belief is that good wargaming means you learn and gain grater understanding of what you are exploring or test out a hypothesis. Moreover good wargaming really tests thinking. If you include logistics, friction, planning and fast tactical play for pressure testing it can be so dynamic and immersive and more importantly leads to very thought provoking discourse. Perhaps current gaming is just far too prescriptive through the gaming systems and perhaps stifles more original thinking. Happy to discuss more one day but in the meantime. My Best wishes

      @@onpatrolpodcast Sure can do. I personally think at the moment there appears to be a belief there is only one way to play. This appears to me to be somewhat linear and prescriptive in play and I sense is stifling creativity and ignoring many other principles within warfare. Moreover, it appears to me, the current list and points system tests and gains nothing in its execution. I humbly advance that picking optimal forces to create balanced games entirely defeats the purpose of wargaming. These types of games of war claim they are wargames but appear to have little understanding that wargames embrace a lot more than just a tactical throw down games. Sure there is a place for fun games of course but I believe the more this is seen as a norm the more other important aspects are somewhat lost. The whole question of what a wargame is can be in itself a rabbit hole. It is also difficult to articulate and needs a lot more discourse because I do see a big difference between games of war and the type of wargames we are doing. Our whole series on RUclips is a deep dive into wargaming. It would be great to see more wargaming represented in the community. Channels like Long Shot Wargaming and Little Wars TV Do an outstanding job. We are far smaller, not commercial and a tad too niche but there is a large community out there seeking more from their wargames. Best wishes. I love the new officer rules. The 2LTs were useless, so starting at 2 additional activations is a great change. The question is will this now become a whoncan time the mass effects of these activations best? With all the officers we now have to bring and the coordination between units being so much higher will this be the new core of the game and lessen the chaos of the dice bag?

    • @onpatrolpodcast

      @@SamDeJarnettDJ I think it will be a delicate balance. Even in 2nd edition, if you had a lot of activations in a row....you normally were set up for an enemy counter-punch if you didn't achieve your turn goals/objectives. Average V3 game will consist of 3-4 officers per side on the table, so we'll have will have to wait and see how it plays out (which may depend on the local meta/play style). lol snipers are less lethal in a way that matters, they can't target specific weapons. if a 5 man engineer squad has a flamer, the sniper needs to kill all 5 to stop the flamer. A sniper being able to kill a random dude easier now is meaningless.

    Manufacturers. Warlord games epic. ACW, ECW I may buy as I can purchase locally. Their Napoleonics is a hard no from me. I don't see the point in spending a lot of money on a line that is not complete. I also don't like that the minor nations at Waterloo were not done. I just can't justify buying extra sets or sprue to do head swaps to create a unit. And it doesn't look that the rest of the Napoleonics era will be covered anytime soon. Moving onto their forthcoming Epic Hail Cesar. Another hard pass as Cromarty forge miniatures fulfill my requirements. Around $6usd for a STL file is a bargain. I've bought the 15mm Carthagian Elephants files. 9 Elephant files in total. 3 light, 3 medium, 3 armoured, a variety of howdahs and crew. Bonus as files are available in 10mm and 15mm so you can print at various scales from 6mm to 20mm, possibly 22mm. And the beauty of Cromarty forge is John releases a complete army and the variety of figures is amazing. Guys will drool over the Warlord range but I'm not.

    Interesting podcast guys. Where do I begin? I got back into the hobby during Covid. Decided on Newline design 20mm Napoleonics and Grumbler miniatures 6mm. Grumbler miniatures sculptor produced nice figures but turned out to be scumbag and ripped people off. Consequently Grumbler miniatures has probably ceased trading. Living in New Zealand was a costly experience buying metal figures, and the postage was horrendous. I no longer buy metal figures from the UK. First resin figures I brought were 15mm Romans, I've forgotten the name of the company, unfortunately they were too brittle and the company no longer exist. Lucas Luber of Piano Wargames started out. At the same time Che at Potbelly Miniatures NZ started up. So I took a punt, asked Lucas for permission to use Potbelly Miniatures as my printing provider. I'm super impressed by the figures produced by Lucas and the quality of resin used by Che. I can purchase a STL file, have access to it straight away by email. Forward the file onto Potbelly with my order in a matter of minutes. Cost of figures slightly less than metal and postage reduce to $5-6nzd. I can order an quality that I want and at various scales. Life is good.

My fantasy armies are almost exclusively from Northstar, with some Wargames Atlantic starting to add to the mix. A big difference is you feel you have more control over what you can do in Achtung Panzer than in What a Tanker, available actions are not left up to the chance of a dice roll.

      @urst_Productions It's a very good hobby if you are able to find people to wargame with in real life. Thankfully good digital alternatives for those who do not have that option. But wargaming with a group in your local town is a lot of fun, especially if able to hold larger events as well from time to time, for example everyone brings everything and you just have a huge battle for a day or weekend or work together on props/terrain/maps.

    @Wyndhurst Dr. James Sterret at CGSC would be a great person to talk to about your training project. He runs war games for students, think tanks, and leaders from there. Great episode and very relateable. I've been painting for just over a year and as FK derailed my fantasy RP characters for armies, I was feeling guilty about some gray and half painted projects. Glad to hear its not just me. Keep up the campaign!

    Call ne crazy but the base coating is the most stressful to me (besides eyes on my characters). I like the details and layer work, but getting that base on with good coverage and not losing detail or looking chalky is a stressor.

    • @Wyndehurst_Productions
      @Wyndehurst_Productions 11 месяцев назад

      Do you paint on your base coat? I have tried that a few times but it was mind numbing. Will always spray on if I can.

    • @onpatrolpodcast
      @onpatrolpodcast 11 месяцев назад

      I think priming miniatures sometimes is like rolling the dice in the South. I have ruined several units that way. I finally have a good system that involves a humidifier and gives me 99% decent results. I agree with base coating. I find Vallejo is easier to apply because it has a decent fluidity to it. Citadel base coats sometimes are like working with mud, and have to be thinned down. I normally avoid eyes on larger armies, but I think I'll give it another crack when I get back to painting my French and Indian War stuff (with such a small model count). Any tips and tricks appreciated! Thanks again for the comments and feedback! -FK

      @Wyndehurst_Productions I also prime with a rattle can. Most often black, occasionally followed with a zenathal. Getting the primer covered, that stresses me. Blocking out the items and ensuring it doesn't look splotchy drives me nuts.

    Gotta disagree. The sight/look of terrain is not critical. The critical piece is: Does the terrain fit the purpose of the game and force the player to make decisions (like a good game rule). Would Inlike realistic looking terrain yes. But as discussed, the flashy terrain is almost just a recruiting tool to get people to play.

    • @onpatrolpodcast
      @onpatrolpodcast 11 месяцев назад

      I completely agree with its purpose. At a minimum it has to fit the purpose of the game (friction point, key terrain, etc). Some people really blow this up by adding too much terrain or making it to clunky, which can torpedo the game. I think one of the main differences from chit/board game based wargames to tabletop wargaming is the use of aesthetics. A sunken road in the topography can serve a purpose, but can also add to the visual beauty of Antietam on the tabletop. I agree it's a sliding scale, but I like that bit of battlefield or period debris that really makes the table pop. It's either helping to tell the story outside of the purpose of the game or helping to immerse the player in the period. I think tabletop historical wargaming with miniatures allows for the convergence of my big 3: history, tactics and the miniature visualization/immersion in the period. I think if I wasn't striving for that on some type of level I would have never left board and chit based games. I think most tabletop wargamers would concur with your bottom line though. It is probably the first place that effort is not really required. We'd all like for it to be realistic, but it's not a hard line. I guess the counter to my own way of thinking is, "well if you like pretty scenery and paint schemes, go do modeling and dioramas." As always, I appreciate you input. Good points for thought. -FK

    Fantastic episode! I just discovered your podcast this week, and I am hooked. You guys are putting out some great content. The French and Indian War is my favorite period to game, and I’ve played both editions of M&T pretty extensively. They are easily my favorite rules system for the period. Overall, I think version 2 refined and improved an already outstanding set of rules. One subtle change to the cards between version 1 and 2 that I appreciated was giving regulars 4 single-action cards instead of 2 double-action cards. I think it makes regulars a bit less of a feast or famine unit, and it dovetails with the command point system so as not to place a regular force at a disadvantage with fewer cards in the deck. I’ve played games of version 2 with up to 8 players, and the card and command point system held up nicely. We assigned an overall commander to select the card to be played, but the subordinates could all lobby the commander for command points or a particular card to be played. In both versions, I think the game really shines in the 400-600 point range with side plots and traits for leaders. You mentioned when discussing Bolt Action that smaller games can be very “swingy” outcomes based on a single roll, and that can certainly be the case in 200-300 point games of M&T as well. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on comparing M&T with Sharp Practice (v.2). I think that Sharp Practice may reflect small actions with regular troops with a bit more accuracy, but I’ve found it much slower to play and not as suitable for multiplayer games. M&T is more clearly written, and I really appreciate the included QRS. I think Sharp Practice misses the mark on modeling Native American units as melee-oriented warbands instead of small skirmisher unit. The widely variable movement mechanic you both mentioned from Chain of Command is also a pet peeve of mine in Sharp Practice. I like Kentuckian’s subtle house rule to use 6”+d6 for movement. Sorry for such a lengthy reply, but I wanted you to know that the effort you are putting into this podcast does not go unnoticed! Thank you both, and happy gaming!

    Funny thing is, for example, I wargame with friends current war on Ukraine. Both in 28mm and now even in 3mm. When I post 28mm UA soldiers/vehicles, Ive got many comments like "They're great looking/Glory to Ukraine/Where did you buy them/What rules you use" - so far, so good. BUT when I post russian tanks/soldiers, Ive got comments like "Buu, Russians sux (which I agree, but tbh didnt see any comments about that under WW2 Soviets), you shouldnt wargame this conflict, etc" and even once got comment that "its too early" in modern wargaming group from guy, who was himself doing USMC vs Taliban forces, which was super absurd to me.

I just try to be mindful and explain my reasons to hopefully bring people into the hobby. I don't make concessions, but hope to explain and show my reasons/intentions. BLUF: I am going to game what I want to game. However, why do you feel a certain way about how I am gaming. @@onpatrolpodcast Well, I have great odd example of "It's surprising how people seem to critique others, but view their own games through a different lens." - We have one Slovak (sort of central europe florida man archetype 😁) guy, which didnt want to wargame anything post napoleonic wars (which were included) because its still "too soon" a most importantly, we today "lives in consequences" of Napoleonic wars. So he played only medievals and warhammer... AND WW2! Because, *drum roll* its maybe "too soon" BUT its about fighting fascists, so it doesnt matter. Duh. People are strange sometimes.

    I absolutely suffer from treating my pieces as individuals. I've given more than a couple games away because I took heavy losses and wanted to pull "my boys" back into safety away from an objective. I think this actually enhances my fulfillment with the game, because it's much more personal and emotional than, say, sliding a red checker across a plastic board. Casualty markers, while some see extreme, are actually a very necessary piece for gamers who want to take the setting seriously, in my opinion. I've had some people shy away from them or even call it distasteful, but when you can see the gravity of your actions, you can come away from the table with a deeper respect for what's happening in the real world. I actually prefer to use models versus counters for this very reason. I've had family in every war the US fought since the Great War. They weren't a plastic chip with crossed rifles printed on top. They were people who lived through history. I feel like people these days have a problem divorcing the person from the politics. Clearly, not every faction in history has been "the good one", but that doesn't mean that every person in the faction was bad. Conscription, propaganda, and peer pressure have forced people into uniform since the beginning of time. Wargames rarely actually need to broach the horrific acts that a faction may or may not be responsible; those issues were present on a scale larger than the Army could approach. That being said, it's not our job as gamers to change someone else's mind when it comes to our hobby. This is a hobby. If someone is going to be unable to separate colonialism or religious tension or genocide from a historical battle, that is not my problem.

    • @onpatrolpodcast
      @onpatrolpodcast 11 месяцев назад

      I agree 100% with your first thoughts on the sanctity of human life. I really think taking in the amount of lives lost really helps put the conflict/battle in perspective for me. It really makes me evaluate decisions and examine the "why." I also hold a special reverence for the people, unit, conflict, or period based on my interest in seeking an understanding of what happened. As for the divorcing anything from politics, that's a struggle. But my goal is to expand historical tabletop wargaming. Therefore, I see it as a challenge that must be undertaken to bring people in who are interested but have reservations. I hope to show them all of the points you discussed (and that we discussed in the podcast) shouldn't be barriers to enjoying the period and the historical wargame. (Besides...this stuff really happened...for better or worse). Thanks so much for your insight and comments. I truly appreciate it. -FK
