In order to fundament the facts of the current variation around the vessel I recommend have a look on to aerodynamics theory through the Munk Moment. Cheers

Although, since a time has been passed from the making of the video I recommended performing another experiment, with the same items Just add a removable plug to each number on the top of the ship model and with the rope hang on them, pushing with a constant tension side ways changing the position if the plug accordingly with each number, you will notice a variation on the directionally stability of the model (variation of heading) and when these variation change in opposite ways its mean that you found the pivot point. Cheers

Objects translate and rotate about the Center of Gravity. The forces applied on the object determine the motion. In a cargo ship the CG will shift with the cargo loading.

@jeanbassard what if two opposing but equal forces were to pull on the boat at the same time. Let's say two men are standing on opposing docks with the boat between the two docks. One has a rope attached to the boat at the base of the head or the lowest corner of the pyramid (front of ship) and the other man sets a rope of equal length attached to the center of the boat, let's say this man is on the left side. If both men were to begin pulling at the same time with the same force in witch direction will the boat be pulled?.. Thanks

You can find two articles by using these search words in Google "pivot point the pilot no 295" and "ship generated current professional mariner" (direct links do not seem to work here) H.C.

It's not new. It's common knowlegde for navigators. Coming down to the basics, it is "having the behavior of your vessel in your feet". I agree that for newcoming navigators it is a source of knowledge. However, it's not knowledge that you need under bad circumstances.
