Motorcycle maintenance- Suzuki DR800S
This is Suzuki DR800S Big 1999 with 26 000km. New bike for me.
Basic maintenance. Oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, balancer chain tension. Balancer chain was not an easy job for the first time. I did it twice. Because after the test drive I felt something was not right. Probably need new chain.

    I am a DR750/800m engine builder (did some 60 engines) and saw what you forgot: O-ring behind the oil filter, clean the pre-filter under the engine (4x M6 bolt) and drain the oil with the drain plug (17mm UNDER the engine),the balancer chain tensioner must only be done with the spring load, the little M5 bolt/nut is only there to secure things, it is advisable/needed to renew the oil seal i inside the clutch cover because if this one leaks due to age you can say bye bye to your camshaft etc, swap the electric decompressor with a manual one (like the 750) to stop the engine with the decomp lever which avoids kick back that damages the cam chain tensioner. The electric decomp uses a lot of current which you need for cold start. Pull the decomp when starting and let the engine turn 3 to 5 sec, release and the engine runs. Enjoy the bike because there is no replacement for cubic inches.

    Friendly advice: Engage the pinion gear with the flywheel first and then start the pony engine. Less danger of grinding the teeth on the pinion gear. The starting engine clutch is permanently disengages anyway. If your machine is on neutral you should be fine. I use this all the time since finding new pinion gears for the starting engine clutch is close to impossible soon. Other wise the bricks seemed to be very weak if a 6 ton tractor can crush them without any additional weight.

    • @Westcoastdigger
      @Westcoastdigger 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for noticing that. I always turn pinion gear on before starting. It didn't turn on then because of the difficulty of accessing the lever. And if the pony engine is running, I don't want to turn it off, maybe next time it won't start. Yes, bricks are nothing for this tractor.

    • @SuperMAZ007
      @SuperMAZ007 10 месяцев назад

      @@Westcoastdigger Might be the pinion gear already has been damaged and it will only go in on the less grinded side. No point in trying to fix it now. If you plan on doing a starting engine rebuild than there is a point also fixing the pinion gear at the same time. The starting engines fail to do lot of wear in the bearings and bearing seals. Since it's a 2 stroke engine when one of the seals goes out. It will be almost impossible to start it. One indication is your starting engine will start blowing fuel out from the carburetor. That means a imminent rebuild is in session. Also the leaver is from a older DT-75 crawler. This one should have a very short leaver that is directly connected to the starting engine clutch with a link. The separate leaver for the pinion gear is more fool proof if the clutch starts to slip.

  • @SuperMAZ007
    @SuperMAZ007 10 месяцев назад

    If your planning to use a external fuel tank. Make sure you flush out all the old varnish from the existing fuel tank. Or put hydraulic oil into it to preserve it for the future. Other wise you will have a rusted out bottom fuel tank that is very impossible to replace. I don't know what is your budget for this vehicle but make sure to get decent engine oil. When you plan using coolant add the thermostat other wise the engine will never achieve the optimal working temperature. If your valves get stuck from sitting there are side covers under the manifold you can open to access the tappers and get them moving and oil them. These engines have a tendency to get valves stuck over time. Good luck with the truck and sure like to see more videos.

    • @Westcoastdigger
      @Westcoastdigger 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment! The fuel tanks are in good shape, but I will take your advice and spray the inside with oil. There are problems with the oil filter, the centrifuge was not original, I installed it because could not buy new oil filter. But the centrifuge does not work and leaks. I am currently fitting another oil filter into the original housing. Cooling is the opposite problem, engine can easily overheat. Probably I need to disassemble and clean the radiator. I hope to make the next video this year.

    • @SuperMAZ007
      @SuperMAZ007 10 месяцев назад

      @@Westcoastdigger Usually the bottom side where the drain plug is rots away first. You might be able to clean the tank without taking it off. Don't put diesel into it cause modern diesel fuel dose get bad over time and will not preserve the fuel tank as good as it should. Your engine on the ZIL is much newer, this should be already the one with metric bolts and nuts. As for the centrifuge aka oil refiner ;) There are two things you need to keep in mind: First the outer shell has a profile gasket that is very had to get tight. This one has the same gasket as the ZILs with V8 engine(even the oil refiner is the same). So try to get or source out one that has still a good gasket in it. Problem is people over tighten the oil refiner cap and that is the cause of the leak later. Second and very important. If you do clean the oil refiner make sure you replace the o-ring inside the housing of the refiner. That is one source of oil pressure loss in the engine. The cooling issues are very common both on ZIL and GAZ with inline 6 engines. Radiator flush will get out most of the heavy particles but for a total clean up you may have to soak the block with coolant. If it's very full of rust and crud you need to manually scrape it but I found out that used coolant can do the same job and letting it sit for a long time. Lets you also see untight areas in the block or cooling system. Over heating is caused also by bad water pump on these engines. They do come with a 70 degree thermostat and are actually needed. But first get the cooling system clean and dont forget to flush the cabin heater as well ;) If you feel your out of ideas ask I will help gladly.

    • @Westcoastdigger
      @Westcoastdigger 10 месяцев назад

      Lots of good advice that I will keep in mind. I have to find time to do it all. Thanks man, i appreciate it! The engine is original and bolts are metric. ZIL V8 parts is still easy to find.
