O' Moore Street, Tullamore
The houses and families of O’Moore Street, Tullamore, formerly known as Earl Street and Windmill Street, 1720s to 2020s
In the 1700s O’Moore Street, Tullamore was on the edge of the town on the road to Killeigh. It soon became known as Windmill Street because of the two windmills erected by the 1720s on the hill south of today’s O’Moore Street. The hill (probably the Tulach Mhór giving Tullamore its name) is now obscured by the houses from the courthouse to Spollanstown Road erected after the 1790s. Today O’Moore Street still exhibits some of the mixed residential development that was commonplace before the 1900s and the building of class-demarcated suburban housing. Yet O’Moore Street was...

I was there the night it went on fire. Staying in my uncles house/shop on Harbour Street. I'll never forget that night. The windows buckled with the heat from the fire. And to think we weren't evacuated and the petrol station across the road. What a night.

I'm actually related to Francis Cosby of Stradbally. Nothing like finding out your ancestor was a criminal and skimmer of military funds. lol Later William Cosby would come here to New York (Herkimer Co) and started some kind of trouble where he suppressed the papers from printing bad things about himself and the English king. From what I've heard the court cases (The Zenger case) over this scandal would set up the basis for the US founding father's "Freedom of the press" ideas because it was seen as so oppressive.

Dwell not so much on the devastating fire and ruin. Celebrate the work of the architects and builders who worked on the restoration. The people of Tullamore who contributed and raised the money for the rebuilding. The offers of churches for worship by the other Christian communities Those things somewhat mitigated the temporary loss of the church
