I used to work in retail in Philadelphia and a customer with an Irish accent came up to me once and asked me to help him find a product called Tarn-X. He called it something like “turnicks.” I understand everything else he said, but I couldn’t understand this one word. I don’t know why he couldn’t have just said he was looking for silver polish. Eventually we did find it though.

Thank you Laura for your wonderful video! Brings back many memories of my Irish grandfather! He would sing Irish songs, play the piano, and dance Irish jigs around the piano bench. He loved to drink but mom severely restricted him from such things while he lived with us. He loved to do jokes and play a game "Red Henny" with us. Not sure if it was an Irish game? He did not like American food so my mom would have to make two different dinners. He loved to walk in his grey herringbone wool suit and Irish cap which he also wore to the beach! I love the Irish people! I had some Irish friends, years ago, who taught me a little Irish culture which also helped me understand my grandfather. I miss him so! My dream is to go to Ireland someday with my husband and possibly move there! 🍀

I spent a month in Eire on a bicycle, camping, hosteling and B&Bing. It was a long time ago (pre-Euro) and her advice still makes sense. I had to travel light, and my goretex rainjacket was my most valuable wearable!

I don't know if it's true but when I watch videos from people who live in Northern Ireland they seem much more friendly.

I grew up in a small town that had a lot of people with an Irish heritage and some people who still had an Irish accent. Most of what i knew about Ireland I learned from movies. Ireland looks like a beautiful country and I thought it would be amazing to sit in a pub and hear people singing but I'm not that sure if that actually happens. In the past few years I've watched a lot of Irish youtubers and Holy Cow most of the Irish HATE Americans. I mean like they have a deep seeded hatred of Americans so I would never ever visit Ireland.

Why does everyone ignore the beara?

I am from the American South, Gulf Coast area. After watching this video, I find that I have been raised by IRISH! All the dos and don'ts apply to me and my culture as well. Never ask about slavery or the Civil War. Cursing and sarcasm are a common social intercourse. AND, be polite or get slapped down! Yes, Mam and yes Sire are just unspoken rules of etiquette. You are on my bucket list, but as you say, it's expensive so I must save.

So, if you are irish and visiting the south east of the USA (like tennessee) everything you just said applies directly except for the driving part. I guess its because the south east was settled by irish, but all the same courtesys apparently are the same. Very interesting!
