Trying out the Outin Nano (portable) Espresso Machine

Heya!!! Outin reached out to me and offered me their product to try out and review. A self-heating, light weight, 2-1 coffee method, portable, espresso machine that looks pretty? Say no more. After trying it out the second it got delivered to my doorstep, I was amazed by this product. But, I think with all the 'wow's' I mention in the video you'll see that for yourself. You can get yours with 1...

a week with the la marzocco pico
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Hiya!! I had the privilege to try out the new La Marzocco Pico home grinder for a week, to see if it would fit me. And who would I be if I wouldn't take you through the week with me? In this video, I'm going to try out dialing in, single-dosing, and focus on subjects such like retention. I'm also making a comparison between the Mahlkonig X54 (that I already had) and the La Marzocco Pico. Will I...

hi peeps, welcome to my first youtube video. in this video i introduce myself a little bit but mostly my coffee corner. enjoy :)
Good to see your review. ive had my Philos (UK) a while now and love it. Made me smile when you removed the handle designed to be used to remove the casing for cleaning. On the other hand I love your honesty leaving it in and not editing it out. good luck with your journey.
How loud would you say it is? I currently have a Baratza 270wi. Was thinking about getting like a Eureka Libra or Eureka w65, or Fiorenzato all ground sense. But many say single dose is better. If the loudness is same as my Baratza, I definitely don’t want it.
I don’t know how loud the Barazza is. All I can say is it’s louder than all home grinders I’ve had & tested so far… The La Marzocco Pico is also created for single dosing & is way less loud.
Happy Birthday!
Thank you!
This beautiful accent is killing me 🫠
Love the video! Thanks for making this content ☺️
Sad it doesn't fit in the Micra portafilter and super odd.
Yeah, right… I thought the same!
Regarding the grind time, it probably makes no difference when making milk drinks. When you drop the beans, you can get and pour the milk. No time wasted! Also, beware fast grinding with smaller (64mm) burrs. That will cause backups and regrinding, creating more fines. For faster grinding, get a grinder with bigger burrs, but not a cheap one. The bigger the burr diameter, the more important the alignment and stability.
What burrs do you have and have you tried pour over with it
19:34 here you can see the burrs. Seem to be the 200D. On the Mazzer Homepage there are pictures of both burr sets.
This grinder can be bought for €995 directly from Mazzer. Also what burrs did you use?
19:34 here you can see the burrs. Seem to be the 200D. On the Mazzer Homepage there are pictures of both burr sets.
@@svenbayer4351i see, it’s the 200’s. I just order mine with the 189’s :)
Mazzer itself directly on their page is selling it for € 995,- for the next couple of weeks.
Not sure you mentioned, is it 200D or 189D burr?
19:34 here you can see the burrs. Seem to be the 200D. On the Mazzer Homepage there are pictures of both burr sets.
as per @svenbayer4351 they are the i200D burrs fitted.
Nice video, thanks! Just a couple of comments: You keep referring to the price tag of the grinder as Eur 1,400 but it’s actually Eur 995 directly from Mazzer. 2nd,Which Burrs do you have? 3rd, It’s a catch cup not a basket! 😜
19:34 here you can see the burrs. Seem to be the 200D. On the Mazzer Homepage there are pictures of both burr sets.
Also, guys!!! I just wanna add that Mazzer slowed down the grind speed to improve consistency. That shows, because it is very consistent. So there’s that little piece of knowledge for you.
And yes, I know I said “professional and espresso home machines”. Don’t judge me.
Thank you. Interesting to hear your opinion. Happy birthday. Using the provided cup will stop all the chaff. Mazzer earth that bottom plate and the magnets hold it in place. I laughed when you removed the handle 😀
Thank you! Sometimes I think it’d be wiser for me to do a little research first but I like diving in to prevent these things from happening, but I’m glad I made you laugh, haha! That’s a better outcome.
Thank you for this video! would you say its better than the Niche Zero? - I primarily have medium/dark roast espressos
I don’t have any personal experience with the Niche Zero, but completely based on factual specs, yes, it is better.
Mazzer Philos is better in almost al aspects, Niche offered something unique when it came out, but the market really changed since. Mazzer Philos has a great built, great burrs and the workflow (which was Niche's strongest point when it came out) is also good. It is more expensive however.
Niet roeren!!!!!!!!
My lord this was painful to watch.
@@minantraXOX glad you’re so inspiring!
What does it grind better espresso or for pour over? Or is it meant for espresso only with stock burrs?
@@michaeldietzen8613 It works for both because of the varying grind sizes, however I personally loved it more for espresso because of the spraying when grinder coarser.
If you like this, wait till you use their Espresso Machine Basket Plus add-on for a delicious double shot (18g).
Now I’m curious!
Is it possible to preinfuse?
I am actually not sure! I’ll check.
Bought one last week and find it really useful. I have a bean to cup m/c for my daily espressos; this was for when I'm away from the house. Also found my favourite coffee in pods and they're great! In fact, I'll probably end up using it at home as it's easier to try different coffees than my bean2cup. I chose the red model - it's more pink than red, but ensures I don't leave it lying around...
Love to hear that! Great that you found a way to try more coffees.
You should bring it on your bike tours!
Great idea!!
I like the realness in your video’s 👌🏼
Thanks! 😁
So what is your professional opinion about the pico for home use? I just ordered the linea micra and the pico looks like it could be a great grinder to pair with it
For me it has made making coffee at home (even more) enjoyable because it’s so easy to use and so versatile in grind sizes. It’s quiet, zero retention - everything you need in a grinder. And it looks pretty too!
@@nietroerenthe quiet factor is a big deal 😊
I'd like to see you review a Ceado next, and then compare with the DF64 and Pico.
that would be cool! need to get my hands on one.
I love your coffee content, especially this video! I’m interested in discussing a potential collaboration with you. Could you please let me know the best way to get in touch with you?
hi, you can contact me on instagram @nietroeren.
Ik heb de Varia vs3 gen 2. Top molen geen retentie ook zonder balg. Iets goedkoper… Ook een conical grinder.
ook een goeie, moet ik een keer gaan testen!
Is that a SCA certificate on the wall?
yes, it is!
@@nietroerenWoww you should post a video about it. I'm sure others would love to hear about it more
what would you like to know?
@@nietroerenwhat level was it, where'd you do it, how was the overall experience and how'd you prepare for it because I plan on doing it but there aren't any courses near me
So nice to see a review that feels so personal instead of sounding like someone is trying to sell me something.
Thanks! I love hearing that. I felt the same way when watching RUclips videos, so I’m glad I can offer a different view.
Nice coffee corner 👍👍👍👍
Have you ever used a Mazzer Mini? If so, how would you rate it compared to this? Im considering a Mazzer Mini Electronic B vs the Pico! 😀
hi. i haven’t, sorry!
Too noisy
I’m glad you share your opinion!
39mm conical burr grinder cost 1000+ is unacceptable. Fellow Ode costs 300-400 dollars is generous to come with 64mm flat burr.
Obviously you don’t just pay for only the conical burr. You pay for the durability, for knowledge, for the whole design, for everything La Marzocco has to offer that other brands might not have or have less. I feel like everyone can have their own opinion about pricing or whatever, but in the end I think it’s worth it and that’s why I bought it. Doesn’t mean anyone else has to.
@@nietroerenGlad you like it!
Cool video, just one thing. Why not use a dosing funnel?
I do now :)
Rubber ring down for the dosing collar it locks into the cup that way!
that's what I'm doing! thanks.
From my experience the varia vs3 with the hypernova ultra burrs is the best bang for the buck for espresso. It's like the conical burr version of this
Thanks for sharing :)
Thankyou for the clear review! I think I will consider buying one 🤔
you definitely should!
Hi, what ceramic cup is that? Looks beautiful.
I know, right?! It's from Frizbee Ceramics.
The DF64 Gen 2 (and DF64v, and DF83, and DF54...) is well-known among home baristas because it's the only cheap, semi-decent espresso-capable grinder with 64mm flat burrs available on the market. The stock Italmill burrs aren't up to par, so most owners opt to switch them out for SSP HU/MP or Mazzer burrs. While the motor is powerful enough, its long-term reliability is uncertain since these grinders are still relatively new. The main problem with these DF grinders (across their entire line) is inconsistent quality control at the factory, leading to some poorly aligned units. Alignment issues can be mitigated with shimming, but not everyone has the time or inclination to do so. If you're using flat burr grinders, you might find it helpful to spray the beans with water (known as RDT, or the Ross Droplet Technique). This reduces static and often eliminates grounds and chaff flying everywhere, as well as minimizing retention. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Will definitelt try spraying next time.
Burrs in Gen 2 is NOT Italmil
Super nice review! Love the dutch community growing!! Keep it up! Love frekko’s coffee too
Some rdt helps the spray a lot!!
Thanks! I'll definitely try your tip :)
What a great review! It was a pleasure working with you. I hope there’s much more to come in the future 🤙☕️
Right back at ya!
Great review!! If you get a chance try the same companies DF54 which is a smaller more affordable version of this grinder which has a lot of buzz around it for being almost as good while being half the price of the DF64 gen 2. I would love to see your take on it.
That’d be a great idea 💡
Oh yeah, I'll definitely see if I can get my hands on it!
so niceeee
What do you think about the Sculpture 078s?
haven’t been able to try it out yet!
I have some experience with both. 3,5 kg with 078S and gen one df64. The itallmills burrs are definitely less suited for “lighter” coffees. Also the body is a bit lacking when compared to the 078S If i give the 078s an 7,8 i’d give the itallmills a 6,3 That being said i use the df daily and have sold the 078S because it is definitely good enough for good espresso. With the ability to upgrade to ssp in the future!
The issue with becoming increasingly immersed in a rabbit hole such as coffee (especially espresso, as you appear to be) is that what once was a "nice cup" as a patron in a coffee shop evolves into an endless quest for a "better cup" as a home barista. What constitutes "better," I have no idea. A more balanced, sweeter, clearer cup? Less bitter? Heavier-bodied? More extracted? Who knows. At some juncture, drinking coffee becomes an excuse to brew coffee rather than the other way around, or something to that effect. This is particularly true with a machine like your Linea Micra, my Lelit Bianca, or other high-end machines, where the act of using it is just as enjoyable as savoring the end result, most of the time anyway. To the everyday coffee person, there is little distinction between the X54 and the Pico, and considerations like retention and exchange don't determine their grinder of choice. Most people with an espresso machine here simply toss pre-ground Lavazza into their 25-year-old Gaggias encrusted in limescale after enduring a quarter-century of dealing with hard tap water, pour an arbitrary amount of coffee into the cup, and find contentment. I was brought up on burnt Moka pot coffee as part of my Italian heritage, so I'm familiar with the phenomenon. For most people, coffee is just coffee, and there isn't much more to it. But then, one day, you begin to wonder if that's truly all there is to it, and before you know it, you've set up a coffee bar in your own room. I know I did. I appreciate this friendly and relaxed approach to content, and I always admire someone who's passionate about their interests! Since you're up there in the Netherlands, I recommend giving DAK and Shokunin a try if you have the chance (since you've already got the jar from AMOC at the ACF). I regularly find amazing stuff from them. Un saluto :)
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree! It’s a difficult process. I try to be mindful when preparing coffee, and only make it when I really feel like having a cup, not when I feel like just using my machine. DAK I know and love, Shokunin I will definitely check out!
What size is your basket? Because dosing 19.5g in a small basket will result in a puck that touches the water dispersion screw and you won’t get consistent results as it makes a dent in the puck
It’s 18gr. But I know. That’s why I mention that I have to get a new basket! However, with the La Marzocco Micra portrafilter a 20gr basket won’t fit. So now, I’m not sure what to do.
@@nietroeren then you get a dent every time you insert your PF and this is the main reason your brews are inconsistent. I have a Micra too, I have 20g VST basket and as is brew I always underdose to 19g. You can have any basket size you want. If you use an 18g basket then underdose to 17g, finer the grind size as you will loosen puck resistance by reducing the dose and adjust according to taste. Hope this helps
And you don’t need a 20g basket, 18g is perfect, just gotta know that with LM, you need to underdose as there is less headspace because of the screw. Try and thank me later
Okay, thanks, I will definitely try it! I was told that a 20gr basket doesn’t fit with the removable black part, if you get what I mean.
@@nietroeren it doesn’t work with Unibasket for example but it totally works with VSTs. I never use the double spout anyway.
You need a collar for your portafilter this will allow you to use the wdt. I suggest getting one which is magnetic and tall. I would also suggest seasoning your burrs to ensure consistent grinding, getting a puck screen, pullman basket and ditching the distribution tool
I know, thank you. I'm currently looking for one :)
@nietroeren I've got the mhw3 bomber one from ali express and it's perfect for the price
Great, thanks for the tip!
@@nietroerenI have one from rocket which is really good because it’s magnetic and just sits on top of the basket instead of going into it
What kind of brew is the Pico for? Espresso, drip, pour over.
I mainly use it for espresso, but since it's so versatile in its grind sizes, it also works for filters!
Nice insights, cool to hear the retention is so low and it can single dose well!
Glad you liked it!
My mini favorite would be an Olympia Maximatic and their Moca grinder if I ever needed to save space. Looks like you need a funnel to reduce mess and wdt before the doze/tamp will considerably improve your consistency along with a puck bottom paper filter and top screen especially since you don't seem to be doing a lower pressure pre-infusion. A spritz of water on the beans will also help with preventing retention and decreasing static charge to improve extraction and again reduce mess.
Thanks for the tips! I’ll definitely try them out. Any tips on a good puck screen?
