50's Rola Alnico 12" Guitar Speaker - SOUND CLIP | Clean & Dirty
Very cool old Rola Alnico Magnet speakers, originally from a hammond organ cabinet I believe they are about 10/15watts each.
They have a touch of damage to them because they're so old but the damage has been repaired and they sound great and the sound files prove that.
They're a bit on the dark side and remind me of my Celestion Alnico blues but much smoother though they have that twang of an Alnico speaker.
Speakers were in a Corodvox 2x12 with the back open for the demos.

What the headroom like on this? Would it keep up with a loud drummer? Would it work as a pedal platform if I wanted to run it clean and add pedals?
With a loud drummer.. yes but no. In a small room yes, but you'd have limited headroom, big room not really. No I wouldn't really run it clean and as a pedal platform, as the only way to get it clean is with the power and "drive" (Master volume) up full, and the gain on like 0.5. Its nice there but thats kinda it for volume and feels more like a 15/20 watt amp in volume there. But thats just my take and i like big loud guitars that I can adjust how I want on stage, I'd say its similar to like an AC30 in volume but voice very differently and has waaaaay more gain. Hope that helps!
your playing makes a good amp sound annoying- sorry but you sound very nervous, choppy and disorganized. and yes, I own one of these heads.
I'm not showing off my playing dude lol, or literally trying to play music at all in this video. I'm just playing some random stuff to show how the controls on the amp work and sound and somewhat playing through quickly so this video isn't like 25 minutes. I think this is a great example of how people actually perceive music and sound, almost all through the players performance and not though the gear. Thanks for the comment though
It's your amp, enjoy the hell out of it, but take itr from a 30-year user of Marshalls - two things I wanted to mention to you: KT88's might be a bit extra boomi for you with that silver jubilee, so you can use KT77s and make sure to buy us the 77s a tad bit hot and I mean like three or four v, not really hot. The KT88s being a little bit too booming would need to be biased a little bit low, 4 to 5v, but that's just my opinion. also, Marshalls as a standard, the treble, turn it all the way back to two. use your presence knob as you would for a treble knob. trust me, you will enjoy it far more and you will not slice the heads off of everybody in front of you. presents in that tone stack is typically $3,500 to 6,000 HZ, whereas the treble is 4500 on up. So every Marshall player I've ever known when I got started, used to tell me the same thing. dropped up present snob trouble knob all the way back and use the presents. also, roll the base back to about 4:00 because it's completely unusable. It does nothing. And then push your mids up to six or seven. especially on that amp with the right cabinet, and I'm talking using a V30 cabinet or any other cabinet that might have legend speakers, will definitely shine with that amp and vice versa. anyhow, enjoy the hell out of it and just take my thoughts with a grain of salt, it's just another opinion
I've actually tried the KT88s already (before this video was shot) and they we're surprisingly tight as i was expecting them to be a bit too loose (thats what i find with most amps I have them in) but I guess since the Jubilee is already so tight it worked our really well and the low end just feels a bit more dynamic and open. They did also smooth out a bit of that high end sizzle which has always been a bit grading it.
I would like to buy one from 1984, is it worth to spend the 700€ extra for a 2203 or does the 2204 sound the same? (Not playing big stages)
They just have a different feel, even the 2204 is waaaaay too loud for like a bedroom situation. 50 watter is sweeter and smoother, 100 watter is more aggressive and has more punch
I have this amp. It’s incredible. My favourite amp of all time. I may be getting a mini jubilee tomorrow too
Love the mini as well!
Yaaassssss
Sounds great, but how are you not completely blowing your eardrums out with those volumes? I actually use a attenuator for mine and I could play as loud as I want. The volume sweep on these amps are crazy makes it so loud. Great video though sounds amazing.
Interesting, I found mine had a pretty good amount of range to sweep (I've definitely had some amps where 0.5 on the master was it on full blast) But this is at about band practice volume for me so nothing too crazy.
@ yeah for some reason, both with mine as well as my VHX… They both have very tiny volume sweeps. I have to use my attenuators with them. Otherwise I’ll blow my eardrums out.
The jcm 800 had the most pleasing tone, nice articulation. How does it sound with bass and drums?
It fits perfectly in a mix, something I always loved about it. Just kinda.. is there and works great no need for much tweaking after
I have both, I bought the dual first after trying them both at Sam Ash cuz the dual just seemed warmer but still great sizzle. Paid $800 for the dual rec 100 watt head w/bigfoot switch and cable. Got an OS rectifier 4x12 straight bottom can off eBay for $750. Definitely played the heck outta that set up, was a new level of power for me stepping into the Tube world from being a solid state guy for most of my time in bands. Then a Few months later I found a triple rec w/OS rectifier 4x12 straight bottom cabinet w/head cover and cabinet cover for $1300 for that set up, and I still have both heads and the pair of mint OS 4X12 cabinets to this day. Last week I did just pick up an Orange Rockerverb MK2 100 watt head w/foot switch and the compact 4x12 straight bottom cabinet pro crush just to have a matching head and cabinet, and I gotta say MAN!! This Orange MK2 sounds friggin’ Amazing all by itself with no pedals, the reverb sings and soars, the sorta dull heavy low mid crunch is thick as hell and really has a Pepper Keenan from COC and Down kinda heavy groove tone, so instantly recognizable! I also have a HIWATT DR103 Custom 100 head which is fantastic for a clean platform to incorporate my pedal board. Might end up with a pair of PPC412 straight bottom cabinets for the Orange rig to be complete, then I’ll pretty much be set for the variety of Tube heads and sounds for the styles I incorporate into my writing. I really dig these videos that point out the different perspectives of what each amp head area seems to shine, it’s almost an endless rabbit hole but it’s still a very enjoyable thing for me at 52 years old, I still feel like a kid sometimes, lol. Great Video brother, I had to subscribe to see more of what I really dig!
Still would love one of the Mini Jubilees!
When I was a kid, I bought this amp around 1984 - and man did it SUCK. This is one of the WORST Marshalls ever made. I spent all my hard-earned money on this piece of sh$t. This was the beginning of Marshalls that suck - until the Plexi Reissues.
COol story
I had both. I liked the Triple more. The Dual falls apart on higher volumes.
Triple Rec with the mid bump is more Adam Jones territory Tool territory…
Too dark and emphasises low frequencies… I prefer the jcm800!
I need to redo my multi-watt dual rec with chicken head knobs.
Helllll yeah, these are "mini" chicken head knobs FYI and you can get 2 big ones for the output/solo knobs
I just watched maybe 3 of your videos today and one of the things i appreciate most is all the palm muting and raking you play, I play pop and skate punk rhythm guitar and couldn't do a lead to save someone's life and I'm not interested really 😂😂. The usual amp demo is one power Chord and then 30 minutes of leads. I'm a very simple guitarist because I'm also mainly a drummer but guitar tone is my jam 😉. Keep up the really well done demos and playing 👊
Thanks man! I try to make my videos about the amp not my playing haha. Glad you're digging it! PALM MUTES RULE
Those knobs! 10/10
THANKS! must have for the rectos. Gonna black out the panel on this one soon
your constant knob turning was so irritating moving way to fast all over place with no pattern to evaluate tone stack variations/values -
Cry
Sorry man, its actually quite a bit slower than I normally would if I was playing or dialing in a tone for a client. Plus I didn't want this video to be an hour long. I've got individual videos of each of these amps with more detail possible. Really just showing the range and variation of the knobs and how they affect the gain, which is stuff I don't see anybody doing on here really.
@acrylicrecording no worries bro I didn't mean to be a complainer was trying to actually gauge the values and the sweeps you do very good job
great sounding demo: sounds perfect, how a guitar is supposed to sound like. Nice! I'm considering buying one. is there any difference in this one you played in the video vs the one which reads triple rectifier solo on it?
Yeah there is a difference, the multi-watt (ones with 100 or 150watt instead of solo) are generally brighter, tighter and more aggressive. Though I don't know if that really makes them "better" just different. Some of my favourite tones I've gotten were on the older "solo" head models. There are some other differences like FX Loop and switching and per channel rectification instead of global. My advise, unless you're really into modern metal and are quite particular about rectos an older "solo" three channel one will be great.
Awesome video! I especially love how perfectly in tune your guitar is!
Here's an idea... Tune the guitar first. Wow.
I mean its not an evertune.. but its pretty in tune dude. Maybe you're talking about the lead part with lots of vibrato ? lol
It’s in tune
The greatness of this amp it’s the pure raw power, very little compression and all of the beef. Even better boosted of course
Exacccccctly, super responsive to your playing
These are F***** brutal!! Horns up on the dual for sure.
Thanks for checking it out :)
You’re killin it with these tones. Great job.
Thanks, appreciate it!
Ahh simple reasons to love the Jub. Pretty awesome demo!
Thanks so much! Classic amp
I have an early jcm 2000 in my collection of marshalls its a great amp for metal and never broke down on the road like the 800's its my favorite except for my 68 plxi's and with those i use overdrives for more gain and thump !!
Thats lucky the JCM2000 didn't breakdown because the pre 2005 ones are know to have bad circuit boards! definitely the best amp for metal out of all of these for sure
People know that a lot of their favorite heavy albums , the guitars were through 800s , they forget or ignore the fact that all those tones were made by slamming the front end with an OD or boost and in a lot of cases, OD, or Boost with an EQ boosting and cutting specific frequencies. Either that or the amps were modded. Also the albums tones were probably lower gain tones doubled and stacked to create the wall of sound and interpreted massive gain . People who have never played an 800 go into it probably expecting modern gain because they’ve only played modern amps also that 800 tone they were fantasizing were finished recorded, engineered and produced tones, through really great sounding speakers and cabs . If you have the place to be able to dime an 800 they get fairly saturated but at ridiculous volumes, I used to play through my uncle’s old 50 watt 800 and it was basically a clean amp at the volumes I could tolerate and even playing with a hard hitting drummer rarely ever got either volume past 4 it was just stupid loud. They are awesome amps but they aren’t gonna deliver enough or the type gain some are expecting.
Jubilee once the output master is dimed. Use the other volume for your volume. No diodes engaged. Blooms around 5 or 6. Glorious.
You get every high gain tone ever.
Totallly, though I find its just different, if you want raw explosive power have the master up, if you want control smooth gain, master down a bit
Hit Mine with an EVH Overdrive set low and Delay in the loop. Vintage Modern cab with Green Backs. The EQ on the Jubilee is super responsive and easy to dial.
Cool.
Great demo! This amp made most of my pedals useless. It's an amazing piece of equipment.
Yeah it's a really cool amp and sounds great without anything in front of it!
@acrylicrecording Absolutely! My pedals have been collecting dust since getting a Jubilee. I spent years searching for this sound
Awesome demo! Does this amp take pedals well? I was thinking of getting one but didn’t know if it could handle distortion or not, I usually play 90s alt rock stuff.
Hey man, turns out this one had some interesting mods done to it so I can’t exactly say about a stock one. But my experience with this and other similar Sunn amps is that they take gain pedal QUITE well. So go for it, but give it a good try before you buy.
Nice demo man! I bought first the Jcm800 studio & I was a bit disappointed! Then I bought Silver Jubilee 20w i fell in love with it from the first minutes! Luckily, I did not sell my Jcm800, I tried G3 dis. + 10 bands eq in the loop= the amp sounds awesome now! But the Silver Jubilee does not need a distortion, just a little push from Sd1! 👌
Helll yeah, the 20w jubilee is freaaaakin' great. If you need all that stuff with the 800 its probably not the amp for you, especially with a G3 since thats basically a REVV pre amp pedal.
Tubes don't affect tone enough to be heard. The speaker is what makes the most difference. Vintage or expensive tubes are snake oil as proven by Glenn Ficker.
100% vintage or expensive tubes are mostly snake oil, but tube types 100% can be heard.. though it is quite subtle. Mostly about feel, I love Glen but when I found out recently he only recently started playing guitar I started taking his guitar comments with a huge grain of salt because in my experience guitar tone almost always comes down to how it feels to play through. But I’ve experimented a lot with different tube types in this amp and also my REVV Generator and they can do some nice subtle shifts to an amp. Some amps really just like the tube they were designed for, others sound great with many just depends what you’re after. I liked this amp best with KT88s at least in my initial trial. I’m going to do a tube shootout on this sometime soon. The KT88s have a bit more low end, smoother high end and was a bit looser and less compressed but not by much.
Just be aware that despite the fact the amp will run on 6550/KT88/6L6 tubes... the Dagnall style output transformer is impedance wound for EL34's.
Hey thanks for the comment, not sure if I'm understanding the point you're trying to make though?
@@acrylicrecording My point is you are mismatching the impedance of the output transformer by using a tube type it wasn't designed for. Sure, you can bias other tube types to work - but these amps generally sound best on the EL34's they were meant to run on.
I love mine. Whenever you feel like just pure rock just play straight with some delay maybe, but if you want to get more aggressive and percussive just throw an OD pedal in front and voila!!🤟🤟
Hell yeah! Just a classic and versatile Marshall
Started sounding better once that presence was cranked brutha! 😎👍
I'm generally a huge fan of cranking the presence.. especially on a lot of other amps but sometimes in the room with this one there is a crazy amount of ear-bleeding fizz that comes when you've got it up loud, somewhat depending on your speakers. Also I find in the mix usually guitars work much better a bit darker than a guitar player would like the play through. So really my comment about it was just letting people know that some cool tones can be had by turning it down.
Silver Jubilee is best amp from Marshall amplifiers!
I can see why Gary Holt plays these as of late. How would you compare the smaller 2525H 20w version to this bigger 100w version?
had one and sold it after less than a month / it lacks balls
The 2555x has a wider frequency range. The small one sounds good but it lacks the punch of the bigger one
My general thought is that the 2525h is a very sweet and great amp but really was designed to be played by ones self not really in a band/loud setting. The power section totally just starts to compress and get small when you try to crank it to compete at drummer volumes. If you're playing something that isn't hard rock or metal with a controlled drummer you could get away with it but the 100w has sooo much more punch and power though a little rougher with more grit around the edges. 2525h is smoother and sweet 2555x is aggressive and angry and a bit more fire breathing but the high end can be a bit ear bleedy and fatiguing.
I found its happy place is having the Master around 6-8. I start there, adjust the others. Yes, it's loud... you need an attenuator. I'm also not a fan of Tube Screamer with Marshalls. I like them with Fender. With the master that high, you really don't need dis pedal, maybe just and OD pedal. But if you must.... Boss SD-1 or MXR Distortion +, is the way to go.
Yeah I hear you, when I had an attenuator this and my Vox AC30TBX and Ampeg V4 were the only amps that it seemed useful to attenuate and crank the master but not really useful enough to keep the attenuator IMO. An SD-1 and Tubescreamer are extremely similar circuits if I recall correctly besides the tone control on the SD-1 especially if running into a very distorted amp. But I totally agree with the tubescreamers are better with Fenders and SD-1s with marshalls. I gotta get me another Distortion +!
@@acrylicrecordingthey are a similar circuit but the SD1 cuts more bass I think and it’s mid and high frequencies are shifted up and the top end of the sd1 is more aggressive. The thing I love about an SD1 into a Marshall is that percussive clank you can get under palm muting.
Sounds fantastic and raw. Great demo man!
Thanks man I appreciate it!
Easy to see why these were so popular! A great classic - hard rock sound. Kick some sort of boost in front for solos back off the guitar volume to clean up a bit. Great rock amps.
100% classic great tone super versatile amp for being so simple.
Does a 50 watt JCM800 with the same gain have a higher volume for home use than a mesa rectifier?
Would really depend on where the master volume is set and the sweep or sensitivity of that knob. Both will sound pretty bad at "bedroom" levels and all of my demos of amps are at band volume or sometimes a bit louder. The master volume knob on this JCM800 is very sensitive there really isn't a "home" or bedroom volume setting, its almost nothing then basically quiet band volume. I think rectifiers can get a bit better at lower volumes but because of the fizz in the FX loop they do not sound good at all quiet unless you bypass the loop (at least on anything pre multi-watt). Hope that helps!
Why would you want to know that?
@@fedup3449 As we all know, the louder the volume, the better the sound of all amps. However, many people say that especially JCM800 and JMP, which require a high volume to be effective, Mesa is not. I use a 150 watt triple rectifier in my bedroom, which usually switches to 50 watts and produces 120db. The sound is acceptable.
@@acrylicrecording My bedroom volume is usually 120db, which is not quiet but acceptable.
@@9iii460 I use the Marshall DSL40 which can switch to a 20W. In addition I have channel volumes plus master volume so I can get all the gain I want and turn to below talk level if needed. Works fine. Cheers!
very cool with the phaser too, nice :D
Phasers ruleeeee! Thanks for the watch and comment!
Anyone wanna trade a mint black tolex OR15 for a mint orange tolex OR15?? lol I absolutely love this amp, but i wish i had bought a black one...
Sounds very similar May as well get the triple then.
Feel in the room is quite different, triple is loose and very dynamic, dual is very tight and a bit more focused. But yeah I kept the Triple.
Really nice comparison. Not a bad sound in the bunch, but I think the 2204 was leader of the pack personally. I'd happily own any of them though. Have you ever tried a Laney GH50L/GH100L? Those are basically Lee Jackson modified Marshall 2204/2203 circuits with some tweaks here and there. They cop a fantastic 'Marshall' tone for way less money and have plenty of gain on tap from a switchable extra preamp tube if you want it.. Definitely worth checking out.
2204 and The 2555x are the two I kept. 2204 is just super a pure and great sounding amp a really useful tool in the studio. I haven't tried those Laneys but have heard some good things! Didn't know about those circuit design aspects! Will have to check one out, thanks for the comment :)
Cool and helpful video, nice job. It's pretty crazy how much this amp seems to have on tap even with the gain knob at about halfway, way more than a Dual Terror which is the one Orange I have.
OH yeah, waaaay more gain than the dual or regular Terror. I had both for a while really wasn't a fan of the voicing of the dual, seemed to not do the cool thing the Tiny Terror did and its only benefit is that it was a bit louder for band use. While I love the Tiny Terror, its quite limited (which is also its strength) and the OR15 is kinda everything i liked about the terror but with more flexibility, though the voicing is certainly different. I also greatly prefer the OR15 over the OR50 reissue I had.
How does the tone stack (minus the extra switches on the 2000) compare from the JCM 800 to JCM 2000 I have a feeling they are the same but have never had both in the same room.
They're similar-ish I suppose maybe a bit more range on the 2000, but I might say its a bit closer to the weird as heck tone stack on the Jubilee, perhaps right in-between. I don't have the 2000 anymore but it was both more tweak-able than the 800 but also not as many sweet spots, with the 800 almost everywhere is a sweet spot.
Not for me this one. It's too fizzy
Might be the speaker/guitar/mic placement both the speakers and guitar are quite bright and sizzly, mic placement could be adding to it as well. I wouldn't call this amp overly fizzy in the room but I hear what you're saying i'd just refer to it as some EL84 ORANGE SIZZLE but not for everybody.
Sounds pretty much like a modern Orange.
I'd say not as much sizzle as an orange and much less compressed, but similar for sure. Much stiffer feel than most oranges i've played.
