I've been using the Speedball carving tool for my linocuts for around 15 years....and no hate toward the Speedball tool. It's awesome. How do you avoid getting ink onto the large non-printing areas, such as her neck in the face block? And what do you do if you do get ink there? It seems as if there is a large rush of accidentally getting in on the final print in areas where you didn't want it to be.

    • @ehollingsheadart
      @ehollingsheadart 3 дня назад

      This is a great question and one I'll have to demonsrate in another video! It depends on a few things - the large carved away areas can sometimes pick up ink when you roll it onto the carving...sometimes this is fixed by simply carving a bit more of that area away to remove raised bits. Sometimes it's as easy as just using a different brayer (a larger one that won't accidentally dip down into those large areas). Sometimes printmakers will make a paper template that they place over the inked carving to block areas that pick up ink that they are trying to keep clean, and they place it down every time they print between the block and their paper. Sometimes some printmakers take a rag and wipe these areas between each inking and pressing!

  • @GrantSR
    @GrantSR 12 дней назад

    Could one use a steel roller to press the paper onto the linoleum, instead of using the wooden spatula?

    • @ehollingsheadart
      @ehollingsheadart 12 дней назад

      Would definitely be worth trying! I've heard of people using rolling pins, glass jars, spoons, a clean brayer, putting a book on top and standing on it even! I say give it a go!

      There are new inks that Speedball offers that are water soluable oil based inks! They wash off with soap and water - they are oil based inks but soap is enough to break down the type of oil in them so no need for harsh solvent chemicals! They perform nearly identically to regular oil based inks :)
