    Piano was my first instrument. I learned to read music about the same time I was learning to read words. I sang in choirs, played trumpet in school band/orchestra. Taught myself guitar, later, flute, violin, and bass. I have always had a piano, but today's keyboards are much more versatile and portable. I am back to piano, learning tunes like I did with guitar. Different voices, like electric piano, organ, clavichord, synths, etc are a blast. It's like the piano comes with its built-in pedal board. Plug your midi keyboard into your computer and a DAW for some real fun!

    A different way of thinking but learning 3 triad shapes (per type) on guitar is not hard. When you start to include the black notes the 'simplicity' goes away. You can use grips but it is not as easy as you say. Just a different way of looking at music , which is a good thing.

    • @qwadratix
      @qwadratix 5 дней назад

      The black notes add no complexity. The OP is correct with this. It's something I encountered on switching instruments. Everything is in the same place in every key. Try playing a root chord in C then lift your hand and bring it down with your thumb on any black key (or white). You find yourself playing the appropriate chord for that key automatically regardless of white/black. The trick is getting that hand position rigidly locked in your mind and not thinking you have to change it to allow for the white/black keys.

    • @tiomkinnyborg2289
      @tiomkinnyborg2289 5 дней назад

      @@qwadratix It is complex because 99% of people see the black keys as different. A beginner avoids them until they learn about hand grips as a mentioned in my first post. Anything that is not obvious adds to complexity. On guitar changing key is not complex as all you do is use the same shapes/fingering but slide it up or down. Black notes ADD complexity!!

    • @H.O.M.I.
      @H.O.M.I. 5 дней назад

      @@tiomkinnyborg2289 After years of teaching piano Tim, in my opinion, you are correct. Young students avoid the black keys like the plague. Especially guitar players. They WANT to understand it but they do require quite a bit of explanation.

    • @bradleydawson9043
      @bradleydawson9043 5 дней назад

      I have started playing the other keys besides C, F, G. Keys like B or C# are easy. All black keys with a couple of white keys. Think of the black keys as a pentatonic scale that you can add onto to make full scales. I hate that they call them "accidental".

    • @tiomkinnyborg2289
      @tiomkinnyborg2289 5 дней назад

      @@bradleydawson9043 Black keys are not accidental. An accidental note is one that falls out side the key you are playing in and is not described by the key signature. eg. playing any black key when in C Major.

    I think most of these points stay true beyond the beginner stage. Playing lighter on the strings is something I continue to improve after 10 years, timing and rhythm is something you have to consciously practice, being patient with yourself but critical enough to notice mistakes (like when you are pressing too hard for example) is a blanket requirement for improving any skill. Picking wide (as well as a million other picking nuances like angling, grip, etc.) becomes more of an obstacle in the intermediate and advanced levels rather than in the beginning, I think, but absolutely good advice. I like this video because it doesn't throw a billion things at a beginner to change, just a few pointers that have a large impact. One improvement I would make is to put chapters/time markers to split up the video. Helps jump around and quickly note all the tips before jumping in.

    Sometimes aptitude rears its ugly head.its just not for everyone. If the ear is not there...all the lessons in the world won't make any difference..sad but true

      You said it. APTITUDE IS REAL! 100%, Phil! If i see a student has low aptitude and medium desire, I won't take them on. If see low aptitude and HIGH desire, I definitely can help them. Strong desire and work ethic can yield incredible results. Ear can be developed but it takes a great deal of work.
