This was so helpful! Thank you so much!
I am so glad! You are welcome.
I love doing CM style exams! We have a little party at the end with grandparents and kids do a bit of recitation and songs. They choose some items to show off too. I'm going to try doing the notebook for exams this time. I sat down to write out the questions today and realized I had to figure out a new system as this is my first Form II student and they are expected to write some of their own stuff! I usually record on the voice app on my phone and then transcribe by typing later on (lots of interesting background noise from younger kids!). I still like that as I can step away if I am needed unexpectedly but feel a need for a change with the older student. We have exams next week so this is very timely help. Thanks!
Love the grandparent party. We do something similar with friends at end of year. Best wishes on exam week!
This is really helpful.
I'm glad to share!
I notice that a lot of your book choices are the same as AO. Do you follow their history rotation? Or just take what books work for your own rotation? I’m really trying to figure out what to do for my own family since term 1 went pretty poorly. I like how you are doing James Herriot and then Burgess, not both together as AO has it. I personally cannot keep track of too many books of a given subject at once and neither can my boys so I think that approach would work better for us.
I pull from AO and several other book lists for many of my choices. We did AO choices for some of my older kids the first time through, and I enjoy re-reading them. Some I choose based on child preference, but others just depends. I do a family history rotation (you can see on A Delectable Education website a rough idea). So we all read from the same history time period, but at different levels. Yes, AO written as is would be too much with our large family.
This video was great. We just finished term one of our first year with AO (y1, y2) and struggled so hard. I like the idea of doing only 2 literature books at once. AO had us doing quite a bit more than that once the Canadian options were added in and the free reads. Thank you for the ideas😊
This is so lovely and encouraging! I used to host but just had to say we’re not going anywhere or hosting a Thanksgiving. Esp this year. It has been hard! But I love knowing I’m not alone! ❤❤❤
I hear you. It's hard, but worth it. Definitely not alone... we even took a vote and since we aren't going anywhere we said to heck with turkey and are making pot roast which we all enjoy 🤣
Thanks for sharing dear friend!🎉👍Have a blessed day!🎁❤4
and you
Another great video Heather, thank you! Do you schedule out the independent readings for your kids? Assign days they should be working on a particular subject/book/recitation? Or just let them work through them as they want during the term? I'm taking your advice on koinonia, morning time and independent readings in order to be more Christ centered and also to have less tension and anxiety in our homeschool, especially with lots of little kids in the home. Prior, I've had every day scheduled out for the term. I was also using a timetable and although it got us done by lunch, it is beginning to feel too rushed/chaotic for us in this season. So I'm trying the hour or so of independent time but unsure how to plan those books all out. Or maybe they don't have to be! Thank you for the inspiration :)
Thank you for your kind words! I create a timetable similar to Ambleside Online by term. (I only try to plan out one term at a time for reading schedule in case we get behind and need to move some readings on to the next term). They have a list of readings for each week, and they can accomplish them at their own pace. When in form 1, I generally help organize that with them, but with my older ones they are now trained to be able to do that themselves. My year 4 is starting to do this for herself this year and for her I simply encourage her to read at least 2 independent readings a day at the beginning of the week. She can do more, but must have at least one book for independent reading for Mon-Thurs. My year 7 likes to read a ton on Monday & Tuesday and keep her reading light the rest of the week. My high schooler likes to balance, but I do see how they start to think through which books they want to read based on mood or length or content. Each is different.
@@raising_arrows_mama I see, thank you. I'm going to give it a go. I think especially my year 6 is going to need quite a bit of help organizing but I really want to help his independence, diligence and planning skills to grow. This is a shift we've needed to make and I really appreciate how much you've shared, it has blessed our home a lot. One last thing...we're using the 'Leading little ones to God book' you recommend in our Koinonia time. My oldest is 12 and although having been raised Christian, often is confused about the faith. All 4 kids are hearing me read through the book and is as wonderful as you said. I've prayed for help to lead my kids more clearly, your ministry here and this book recommendation have been an answer to prayer. I can't say thank you enough.
@@kathey1736 I'm glad you are enjoying LLOtG. My 6 year old plans nothing, next year she will have more say. This year she knows she must do piano practice, handwriting, and reading/phonics every day but otherwise I choose which books I read with her-seeing as she is not an independent reader. They can choose more independently when independent readers. That said I do sometimes give her a choice in her books for the day, but I'm still the one making sure it gets done. I made her a simple picture checklist in Canva at the beginning of the year to help her with her basic daily tasks: cleaning her room, brushing teeth and hair, getting dressed, piano practice, handwriting, read Bible with mama, phonics, read a book with mama (this would be one of her school books) and play outside were on her daily tasks. She no longer needs a checklist for those things- but she's a bit of a go getter.
@@raising_arrows_mama It's my year 6 student (he's 12) that is going to need help planning. He is in that spot of adolescence where he doesn't want to be told what to do but also can't manage his time on his own yet. My 8 year old/3rd grader is much more willing to get things done herself. Next year I will have my 6 year old joining us, thank you for sharing how you approach her books/lessons. I'm very much looking to 1st grade again! :)
@@kathey1736 Gotcha, yes it does take simple training. For my kids the great motivator is that they can finish in their own time and make some decisions regarding their days. However, those natural consequences do come into play.
Heather, I’d also like to say thank you for all the wisdom you’re passing on. It’s inspiring, the peace and grace that seems to abound in the way you run homeschool. We have exams coming up in a couple weeks and i’d like them to go better for everybody. I didn’t quite catch how you scheduled exam questions for the day in the independent time. Are you just giving 15 minutes to listen to a child dictate an answer for the ones that you write their answers down? Also, how many questions do you try to cover per subject during exam week? My question is targeted towards our situation of a form 1 son that struggles to write and a form one daughter that is just learning to write. Thanks so much for all your doing!
Thank you for your kind words. We do a question per book/study. I often will have them draw their answer and then dictate it to me their explanation/narration/response. My form 1 students never do more than 4 questions a day and sometimes only 3 depending on age. It really just depends how much they can handle. I have a friend who does exams for all subjects all in one day per kid. My kids get a bit overwhelmed with that approach so I give them a little bit (varying the subjects) over 3-5 days.
I love all the great books that come with CM style of learning (we only loosely follow CM). However, I've never been a huge reader (i know all the benefits of reading but I'm just not a big reader) so I don't really pre read. We only have one kid so its not necessary to pre read. We do one read aloud so that I read to her. She reads bible and history. But I am there following along. As for her literature readings (we do one book at a time) she reads them on her own. She orally narrates everything. And things I dont do with her you can just tell by the narrations if kiddo has read and understood the materials read. So I dont feel I need to follow along with her for everything or pre read. Bible and history I find very crucial to do together and to further discuss cuz afterall God created the world and its "HIS" story.
That's wonderful that you can do that along with her. Yes, I didn't pre-read with just one either. Though since we create our own curriculum book choices now it's crucial so that I can find the right books. I've also heard tales from friends where kids made up a narration after googling a summary ...luckily mine have not tried that one, yet. ;)
Great tips! I love your new name btw!
Thank you!
You are my new favorite youtuber! I so appreciate all your insight and recommendations. I would love to see a video on the books you found not appropriate that everyone loves. Like you, I try to read as many as possible, but there are only 365 days in a year... I'd also love to see how you plan your highschool students' school year and calculate credits since you don't use traditional curriculum.
Thank you for the compliment, and those are definitely in the works. Though credits may be different for us as we are in Indiana, and don't have any state requirements there. Though it is something I have considered (can't totally break out of the state educated teacher mindset- Purdue trained me too well there).
Thank you! This is wonderful advice! 💖☺️
you are welcome!
I watch her shorts they are funny.
Thank you for these reviews. I was just at the bookstore with my daughter and almost bought The Bookwanderers, but wanted to do more research first. Glad to know now about the third book.
Glad to help, I will try to add more as I am able, but they will probably hit my BookTube Channel www.youtube.com/@thereadingmama
All of our homeschooling stuff failed. The only thing that we kept using is the greeking out podcast.
I'm sorry to hear that. How many kids do you have schooling?
I’m so disappointed by adult content in kids books. It frustrates me. I asked my librarian to put the rainbow stickers that they put on adult 😖🙄books on picture books/middle grade 😢 so parents know one way or another. She was kind about it.
It is frustrating. I spoke with children's librarian at our library, and since they are public entity they can't cater to one group or another (there is a lot of junk Christian books in the adult section that I don't think Christians or anyone ought to read for example) also she said the publication companies are really the ones pushing the agenda in children's literature. So as it becomes more prevalent there, it will become more prevalent on the shelves. However, I did ask that they not make their summer bingo be so focused on adult situational books for the teens. They had so much rainbow topics, but also much too mature "romance" books too. My daughter could earn no credits for wholesome books it felt like.
Great review. Would love to see more about book 5.
We are just starting it this term, but I will share once we get half way through it.
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you. 😊
Oh I'm so glad!
I just want to express that I appreciate your videos. You really demonstrate a certain stability in your homeschooling beliefs and your expectations for your children. As, a viewer, fellow homeschool mom and charlotte mason enthusiast, your videos are very comforting. Thank you ☺.
Oh this is so kind, thank you for sharing with me!
Hi! Do you have any additional resources for planning you could share? Things like how you find books for each history stream, etc. Really considering combining my kiddos in the same history stream next year and it looks like I may have to do some curriculum building on my own verses using a boxed plan.
I have a several posts on planning on the blog. There are a few Charlotte Mason curriculums that have the whole family in the same history stream: A Gentle Feast, Simply Charlotte Mason, and Alveary all come to mind.
@@raising_arrows_mama thank you, I’ll check out the blog! I’ve looked at the curriculums you mentioned but unfortunately there’s something about each of them that I dislike. I think I’m going to try my hand at planning my own. Thank you for your response!
@@HumblyRootedHome I feel the same way. It's a work of dedication, but I feel it is so worthwhile!
Sounds good! 😌
Lots of great tips. Thank you!
Thanks for watching

Sounds so lovely! 💗☺️
I've had this on my "Books" list on Amazon and enjoyed hearing your review! When you mentioned how you liked Mere Motherhood as well, I thought maybe I'll put that on my list too. I have 15m old twins (very fun yet incredibly exaughsting and quite challenging!), a 4 year old, and 7 yr old and these seem like great reads for me right now!
Busy time, but I hope you have the chance to enjoy the books!
This is has been on my radar! Thanks! ☺️
Hope you like it!
I really enjoyed your fresh perspective on literature! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video! I may have missed it…do you read the books at the same time or one following the other?
You could definitely do it either way. Currently my children read one chapter a week from their classic lit selection and one chapter a week from their modern lit selection.
We love Guardians of GaHoole !
It was a surprising joy!
What a good idea! I’ve been thinking of using The Blackbird Girls with my girls. I’m going to be thinking about this.
Ooh, I've not heard of this, will have to look it up! Thanks for sharing.
Heeeey friend! 🎉This video is so good. You share about this feast so beautifully.
aw, thank you so much friend. Thank you for introducing me to these beautiful celebrations!
This is so helpful! I am going to print this off and start with my almost 3 year old. She begs for school, but I have been hesitant adding her in. Thank you!
I hope it is a blessing to you and your little one!
We call them Family Studies too!
I love the way you keep it simple and INEXPENSIVE!
Thank you for the resources especially the Spanish worksheets
You are welcome!
Love your videos. Thanks for the reminder that home educating doesn't have to be expensive. What advice do you have for a child who is past the 6-7 yrs of age and has not so pretty letter writing. Thanks for your time!
Just keep practicing! 5-10 minutes daily, repetition is the key and encourage them to do their best each time. For my leftie (who struggled) I would have her put a heart around her best letter/word at the end of each day and particularly nice ones we would mail to grandparents to show her hard work. Something that would encourage them and show that you are proud of their progress.
Wow I love this so much! Your resources are lovely! I have 3 and 5 year olds really keen to learn writing so this helped me know how to move forward with them before year 1! ❤
Wonderful! I absolutely adore those ages and their eagerness!
Thank you so much! I love hearing of good modern historical fiction.
I do too
Thank you for this lovely review. So helpful! Sounds like a great option for older children. We too love historical fiction. May you have a lovely weekend. 🙏☺️
Thanks, and you!
Love, love all your selections!!!. ❤
😀
Thank you for making this video.
Glad to help!
Thank you for this! We actually have the Preschool Bible, the Biggest Story one, and the MFW Bible Reader! Great to know that from here we can just go straight to the actual Scriptures. I was researching some “bigger kid” options but nothing was landing quite right with me. We use ESV at home so I’ll probably just go that route!
Yes! You really can, just start slow, and you will really be amazed at how they pick it up.
I would love to know your reasoning for KJV. I love hearing peoples why's on whatever version they use! :) I always go back and forth on which version to use for our kiddos.
There are a myriad of reasons that I cannot give the proper explanation in this space regarding origins of texts, but ultimately for me it truly is the language. It is beautiful, and I appreciate that I can read hard texts with my kids and still protect their innocence.
This was such an amazing resource! Thank you for the sneak peek into the lofe of a veteran mom
Praise the Lord! Thank you
Interesting! I haven’t used any of these! ♥️ except the KJV 😂
Picture bible books are not necessary, but these have been enjoyed by my children.
Hi! I enjoy your videos but I have some constructive criticism. Your sound is SO LOW. I go from any other video to yours and have to turn the volume on my laptop ALL THE WAY up to hear you. There is something wrong in your sound settings.
Thank you, sorry I am doing the best I can with my limited materials on my mac. I hope one day to be able to afford some actual equipment, but for now doing all this for free.
I started doing this for my sunday class and got rid of the worksheets!
YES! Oh those poor SS worksheets that just end up in the trash, when we can have rich conversations!
I am curious what you used to help you read and understand Home Education (her volumes in general really)? I’m currently trying to strengthen those muscles but could use help 😂
