My egg setup for the canals (Tekapo/Twizel)
This is a more in-depth look at my egg setup, from my braid line to sinker line. The knots and everything I use are what I am comfortable with tying and have a good idea of how much pressure I can put on a fish during the fight. This is only a guide and if your more comfortable tying other knots stick with what you know. The basic setup will still be the same.

      I think the shimano reels are worth it. I have only used okuma and shimano reels, and out of the 2, i would go shimano for the reels, the build and quality is just the bit more better. I have no problems flicking out light jigs. I have the stradic in the video, 2500 vanford and 2500 vanquish.

    Just about to do some online ordering. Do you prefer the sinkers with the wire out the ends or the ones with the slip thingy attacher? There's quite a range of weights available are there particular weights you tend to use mostly?

    • @downsouthfishing-nz6061
      @downsouthfishing-nz6061 3 года назад

      I find the Sinkers without the wire are easier to feel the bottom of the canal but can be a hassle to tie and they can snag more often. The ones with the wire are easier to tie but can be a bit harder to feel the bottom. I just have a mixer of the both. Weight all depends on the flow. I'd say mostly I'd use the mid three weights the most but I've also had to go the lightest you can get or the heaviest when the canal is flowing hard. You can never go wrong with a good mixture of gear

    Great vid. Given the short distance from the braid to the leader to the swivel (2 inches) how come you don't tie the braid directly to the swivel. Also what fluoro do you like. I have had problems with breaks at leader braid junction with black magic but I use a uni to uni knot so will switch to your knot it looks better. Thanks again

    • @downsouthfishing-nz6061
      @downsouthfishing-nz6061 3 года назад

      Hey mate thanks. I just prefer fluoro to swivel. I don't really trust a straight braid to swivel knot. I use the shimano Ocea Leader. I've played around with a few different knots uni to uni, FG and a few others and have now settled with the alberto. It's faster and easier to tie then the FG. The slim profile is a lot nicer to go through the guides.

      Hey mate. Trout love to hit the mouse there is a lake down in my neck of the woods that I fish with the mouse and have caught a few nice browns out of. So I thought why not give it a go at the canals and it paid off. I have noticed 9 times out of 10 it will be a brown trout hit it over the rainbows. Browns might be more aggressive, I'm not too sure. But I think everyone should give the mouse ago it's a fun experience to have.

    • @downsouthfishing-nz6061
      @downsouthfishing-nz6061 3 года назад

      Hey mate. No you don't need light on the mouse I find when it's really dark without moon light the mouse works really well. I only turn my head lamp on once I have hooked the fish. From what I understand trout can detect water displacement or movement with their lateral lines. I've also read some blogs and they suggest trout can almost see as good at night as they would at day time. The mouse works best around lakes with beach trees around it and when they are seeding. Umm I just egg roll and mouse fish up there I haven't caught a decent fish on a lure or soft bait. If you try the mouse fish the edges at Pukaki canal cast up the canal and try to match the flow back, (if it's flowing hard move down the canal) casting down stream back up slowly retrieve like 2-3 seconds for a full handle rotation on the reel. At the bowl I just cast it out and slow retrieve like a would with a normal lure. It took me awhile to start hooking fish up there but persistent is key.
