This talk examines many aspects of Scarborough's police for...
Before the Bombardment: MI5 and the German Invasion of Britain
Просмотров 313Год назад
The bombardment of the North-East coast by German warships, on 16 December 1914, is often seen as something wholly unexpected. But in some ways the British were well prepared for it, since they had spent much of the previous decade imagining a German attack, and experiencing the horror of a German invasion of Britain through novels, plays, and films. Fear of invasion went hand in hand with a co...

In 1997 the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society undertook an important excavation in the Old Town at Springfield, near the former Quaker Meeting House. Filmed at the time by local movie-maker Geoff Jefferson, this video records how the dig found the lost medieval church of St Sepulchre and an ancient watercourse called the Damyet. Alan Booth, the then Town Crier, starts the film w...
What a great.presentation. Thank you
This was really interesting! Great talk from Nick Hiley!
Very interesting! My Scottish great great grandparents were apparently married in Ayton in the 1800’s. Thank you
Excellent video very informative.
My dads last name is Ayton we have been told that our roots come from Scotland and that our family used to have a big pink castle we thought it wasn’t true because he’s Jamaican but our DNA test says we are Scottish and I now see it wasn’t a tall tale

nice drawings!
Hi i have been researching and metal detecting at aldby park and buttercrambe for 3-4 years now and i am very thankful that people are actually working on the grounds and the earthworks. I also believe i have found a building that has began to pretrude out the ground. I dont know how to describe the location but it is in aldby park. Around the building i have found old pottery old nails and bits of broken glass. I believe the building to be around 1600s
Very interesting. I'd never heard of your society. The Astronomer Fred Hoyle, a Bingley lad, (Steady-state theory) wrote a book on the North Yorkshire Moors ice-age geology. It is heartening to see folk researching their home turf.
Facinating! Thanks.
Amazing
Very interesting. Thank you.
Fab. Hope you do one of East Rosedale
This is an awesome video❗My Hodgson ancestors were from East Ayton and Seamer. I can imagine they knew this area well and walked along the same paths.
Smashing video. Very interesting. Thank you.
Is there a place we can view all these old photos of rosedale etc?
i imagine Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole
Are you getting your east and west mixed up or is it me that's confused by where you are?
u had no right blocking off all the entrances
Excellent and really informative video. Clearly a lot of time and effort has gone into putting it together. Well done to everyone involved and many thanks for sharing it.

Very interesting film really enjoyed watching thank you for producing it!
Splendid.
Thanks for this.
A delightfully presented tour, thanks Chris
Thank you very much! I really enjoyed it. I've always wanted to go on the tour. In the winters of the 1950's we used to toboggan in the field as children. We also came and rolled our Easter eggs. I remember the excavations in the early 1960's. Jane Sleightholme
My ancestors descend, I believe, from the Evre or Eure family who built Ayton Castle. The name derives from d'Evre. Evre is a village in Buckinghamshire nowadays called Iver.
I used to enjoy playing on the castle when I was little. My grandparents lived in Yedmandale cottage
Interesting video. Thanks for all your hard work.
Has there been any earlier dated finds in the area Chris as the suggested roman road passed to the north of it?
Much further north if the line is with Hutton Buscel
