Yo those are legit close strikes though. From the tv perspective its corner or outside but he sees a beautifully placed splitter, cutter, curveball. If you truly knew the game you could obviously see these plays were made way harder than the had to be. The guy had no range. He had decent hands and a good arm. Better suited as a 3B. But he couldnt hit either so idk where I would have played a guy who makes routine plays look so flashy. I want an Omar Vizquel type who made EVERY play look routine. Wake up. He definitely missed a lot of calls, but a lot of them could have been at least partially excused if he showed any kind of humility on the field. That being said, as a spectator, I'd rather have an ump call a wider strike zone. Get them to swing the bats. Incidentally, I'm sure they study film on umps just like they study film on pitchers. Tell your team "we've got a big strike zone today. Protect the plate, protect half of both batter's boxes, ankles to armpits. Swing, damnit."

Ok the last pitch on Schwarber was low but the others that were criticized were really strikes, no matter what the batters say. MLB needs reliable analytics before they destroy his reputation. One executive cited that H was just not good at calling strikes and that his accuracy suffered as he got older. Is this just bias? What are the real numbers and percentages of error compared to other umps over 34 years?

I think that his calls are defendable if you count that the ball passes the strike zone over the plate and not where the catcher receives it.

It was announced about an hour or so ago that Angel Hernandez has retired and will not umpire another MLB baseball game. Edit: I’m sure you’ve noticed but he pretty much always falls for the catcher’s pitch-framing. It’s ridiculous.

This video is bad. You just found a bunch of super close calls that most umps call strikes, and even some correct calls in here. And why are you showing his calls when it’s a POSITION PLAYER? Every single ump extends the zone when it’s 12-1 and 2B Joe Smith is in to pitch

I used to defend umpires calling balls and strikes and never using an automated strike zone. After watching years of the awful balls and strikes called I can’t defend them anymore. It’s gotten worse as well.

Why will the MLB not fire this guy? i understand it is a union, but can;t the MLB do something about him? Or maybe, just maybe, the games that he is an umpire for, both teams refuse to play? Kind of like when Biological Women refuse to compete with a Biological Male that thinks he is a woman? Just say NO.

Given the fact that nobody has anything good to say about the way Angel calls the games, you would think that he would at least attempt to get better but he doesn't seem to give a shit about what he's doing.
