Rodrik Cassel: Devoted Too Far | Character Analysis | ASOIAF
Castellans and masters-at-arms led some of the most overlooked and underappreciated tasks in all the Seven Kingdoms. They were responsible for leading great strongholds in the absence of their lords, they were responsible for training the resident soldiers, and they were instructed to teach the sons of those they served to become knights in their own right. Often, their work went unnoticed until something went wrong: a lordling lost a fight, an army lost a battle, a lord lost his castle. Yet, the most successful masters-at-arms became close confidants to their lords and earned the respect of entire kingdoms as a result. Such a man as this was Rodrik Cassel. Hello everyone, and welcome bac...

A Game of Thrones Prologue: A Deeper Threat | Lore & Analysis | ASOIAF

Cold, barren, harsh. The audience’s introduction to the world of Ice and Fire, on the very first pages of A Game of Thrones was not for the faint of heart. Westeros and the lands beyond were no homesteads of comfort, but battlegrounds where one had to fight to survive. While south of the Wall, these conflicts had turned tactful and treacherous, beyond the frozen reaches of the North, physical m...

The throne sat empty, the people beneath it fractured and divided beyond measure. All he had to do was reach out and take it. With one decisive movement, one swift decision of finality, the world would be a different place. It would be just and strong and united. But he spurned the chance, leaving the available power to instead be grasped by one of lesser will. Hello everyone, and welcome back ...

A different kind of student required a different kind of teacher. If the youngest daughter of Winterfell was to learn to protect herself in ways usually only reserved for noble sons, she would require a mentor quite separated from the usual knights and masters-at-arms scattered across the Seven Kingdoms. Her father recognized this, and so looked to the east, across the narrow sea to find one wo...

Physical strength was a requirement of knights, not lords. The nobility of the Seven Kingdoms operated instead through shrewd deception and convenient alliances. This style of living set them on edge, yet it was the price to pay for the fineries of life. Yet, there were some who still could not escape their grimy reputation. So it was with House Frey. Try as he might, the late Lord Walder could...

Change, if implemented poorly, can cause unrest. In the North, a great House that had presided as the utmost authority in the region second only to the crown fell through dark and dishonest means, replaced with a sword to the neck and a knife to the heart. The new Wardens of the North commanded their subjects through both diplomacy and force, but that hardly meant all was well. Even without the...

Being the son of a king isn’t a crime, but it is no guarantee of an easy life, either. If you want to see competent characters, read some of the fiction of Robert A. Heinlein. Many of his lead characters are brilliantly portrayed, such as Lazarus Long in "Time Enough For Love". And in the movies, see Michael Douglas' character, Jack T. Colton, in "Romancing the Stone". One of the best movies ever made.

They knew Gerrod was there. They let him go, almost as if he wasn't even there. If there was a Pact-then that Pact has Terms. An obvious given in those Terms would be for the First Men to not be killed by Others. Gerrod had some kind of special First Men bloodline that prevented them from killing Gerrod or they WOULD have killed him, too. LOOK at these CRAZY magical icey beings-they do not need to let someone live for any reason. IF The Others could have killed them all, they would have. Gerrod is SPECIAL.

Ned Stark is a straight up BAD-GUY... He's responsible for more death's and misery than almost every other character in the story. There's a difference between "lawful" and "honorable." Aragorn dedicates his life to saving lives but will still make the tough decision when it comes down to it (like letting Frodo leave and going after Meri and Pippin).

It's the characters in the story that acted in bad faith that are responsible. What you're saying, would be like if you chose to obey the law and not run a red light, even though you could make it safely, and a drunk driver slams into you killing or severely injuring all the passengers in both cars, and you're being held responsible. Doesn't really make sense does it? You did nothing wrong. In the same way Ned Stark did nothing wrong.

If one thinks about how Sansa wanting to be a separate kingdom made more sense than the rest of the other decisions made at meeting of the other great houses. The strategy behind Arya killing kinda makes sense. The night kings focus would be on Jon , Bran and Danny not a little girl. Gray Worm and Mesandea’s relationship was beautiful, proving intimacy is more than the physical aspect of love. As for him getting his way concerning Jon he didn’t get his way. He wanted Jon dead. I agree D&D got lazy and greedy.

I always loved the idea that Eddard Stark let his daughter learn about sword fighting. He didn’t hinder her idea in favor of the traditional female role. Syrio taught her without reservation of her being female. I think both realized the danger of where she was not just political danger but that of being considered weak because of her gender. Later in her story being with the Hound she learned more. Then her story later on learning from the faceless man. Arya was a formidable woman. If we ever get the next 2 books I would love to see how much more powerful she becomes. Great character choice. I’m looking forward to more.
