US Civil Affairs Soldiers Begin Work in Liberated Metz, France; November 23, 1944
Civil Affairs - designated G-5 - soldiers begin their work in the newly liberated French city of Metz. The Military Government was in charge of establishing pro-Allied officials in local government offices, securing the existing infrastructure of liberated cities - or occupied, in the case of Germany, and helping locals rebuild after the exit of German authorities. Counterintelligence Corps personnel also assisted Military Government in rooting out enemy agents and sympathizers in their area of responsibility. This footage shows some amazing views of the city of Metz after its liberation.
The footage is dated December 2, 1944, but it appears to have been shot in the latter part of November...

During World War II the area was bombed by Allied forces, killing 200 people on 25 April 1945. The town centre with many hospitals and the train station was nearly totally destroyed; the barracks did not suffer any damage. After the war the area was under American military governance (1945-1948).

My late great uncle was a master sergeant in the 2nd squad (24th). Among his bring backs was the flag that flew over the post office in Cologne, which I still have to this day. I was the only one in the family he would speak to about his experience, and only then the bare minimum and only because as a child, I asked him all the time. But he would give me things to feed my quest for knowledge about WW2 and his service. Thank you for posting this. 👍
