These are the discs that I obtained as part of the Jeff Gold Collection. Jeff Gold worked for RCA on the CED Videodisc program in the Engineering Department. He was part of the team assisting Gunter John in the development of the Electron Beam Recorder and Optical Mastering as well as the development of the EM Cutter Head used to record the copper substrates.

Here is a brief video on what kind of damage to look for on your CED Videodiscs. The CED Videodisc is a pressed vinyl disc like a record. Therefore, it can sustain similar damage from being stacked, scratched, or mishandled. In this video I will go through some of the discs I have discarded as being too damaged to play. This is of course at the user's discretion, but with the cost and rarity of...

    I put in a new stylus but I still have rainbow colors off and on in the movies. What can cause this? Thank you

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude Месяц назад

      Rainbow effect is caused by improper turntable speed. Typically on a F/G player you can re-lubricate the turntable shaft and it will resolve the issue. But it could also need a thrust plate adjustment or the platter may have lost it's magnetism over time. Sometimes the belt can create drag as well if it's too worn out. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions, videodiscjunkie@gmail.com thanks.

    Can you provide the belt measurements please? Or a source for replacement belts Thank you !

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 2 месяца назад

      So the F/G models use 2 belts, a Servo belt for advancing the stylus arm and a turntable belt to get the platter up to speed so the sync plates can take over. The turntable belt rarely needs to be changed, the servo belt needs to be changed almost every time. Unfortunately the belt that RCA used had a concave design which is no longer manufactured. So I offer a kit that comes with a smaller belt and small plastic washers. The washers and smaller belt design prevent it from riding up the motor shaft and get stuck along the wall of the mounting bracket. I offer both the servo belt kit and turntable belt for sale on my website cedatum.com or if you would like measurements of the original belts they can be found here, cedmagic.com/tech-info/belt-replacement-guide/belt-specs.html

    Why is it propped up on Powerade?

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 2 месяца назад

      Because it needs to be up off the table to access the height adjustment screw on the bottom of the player. You actually want to be playing a disc when you adjust the screw so you can raise it up just to the point where it stops scraping. Then FF the movie about 10 minutes and keep checking the picture to make sure it's playing good and there is no scraping. You may need to make additional up or down adjustments as needed. Keep checking till the end of the disc. Star Wars is recommended for this procedure as it goes to 60 minutes on side one. Also you don't have to use Powerade bottles, that's just what I had handy, you can use books, or cans of soup, or whatever you want really. lol

      Lots of factors at play here, I guess it depends on what the model is, how much they want for it, who you are getting it from, is shipping involved, has it been tested, and most important of all...how badly do you want it?

    • @millertube40
      @millertube40 3 месяца назад

      @ketonicdude item is not tested. Just says it works. No disk. No shipping just a 20 min drive for $80 bucks. SFT 100 is the model. Kind of want it but don't need a boat anchor either. Thanks for your help.

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 3 месяца назад

      @@millertube40 I would be curious to know how they can say it works without a disc to test it with. I presume when they say it works they mean it powers on and had a load indicator. This does not mean that the player works. Most likely it will need a new servo motor belt, and possibly a new stylus. There's no way to know unless you have a disc to test it with. I try not to spend more than $20 on a common (SFT100) untested player just in case it does need a new stylus ($100). But again, it all depends on how badly you want it. I do have servo belts and styli in stock for this model so if you need any just email me, videodiscjunkie@gmail.com. Otherwise check my other videos on how to change the servo belt and service a F/G model player. Thanks.

    When Teldec failed with TED, RCA thought "our disc has enough playing time for a feature film" but they also harmed themselves, because when video is introduced as recording medium, you can't establish a read only disc. DVD could only succeed by being storage medium for computers. When your computer plays video DVDs, you purchase some. When you own video DVDs, you buy a DVD player instead a new CD player.

    Can one pump the players AV through a receiver? I'm curious as to your assessment of the sound quality. It being uncompressed on vinyl, I imagine it sounds great if the dolby stereo discs can be decoded via Prologic.

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 3 месяца назад

      The sound and color on CED is quite good actually. You can defiantly hook it up to a receiver. In fact RCA made a receiver for it, the MSR130 I think it was. It was also supposed to be a part of their Dimensia system in 1984 but when the program got cancelled they decided not to include the SKT425 CED Player. But CED does not have Dolby stereo, it uses CX noise reduction.

    • @kubrickenigma7977
      @kubrickenigma7977 3 месяца назад

      @ketonicdude Thanks for the rundown. The Dimensia would have been a premo mid-80s console setup. Wasn't there still an RCA jack on the back of the television for the CED model you mentioned. Have you ever tried running CED through DPL? I have laserdiscs that aren't Dolby encoded, but are CX and have a pretty solid spread through a DPL reciever. Just curious.

    • @ketonicdude

      @@kubrickenigma7977 yes they still left the jacks and everything else in place, just omitted the CED name from the remote and receiver. The SJT400 and SKT400 both had a communications jack on the back to allow it to be operated by the Dimensia TV.

    With no skipping it is possible that was a demo only model of the player. They were produced with a heavier stylus pressure against the disc. This made them play really well but had the disadvantage of wearing out the discs quickly. I worked in a video store in the early to mid 80's and we had a demo model of this player, 10 plays was about the most you could get from the disc without degradation of audio and video quality.

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 3 месяца назад

      Hello Kenneth, this player doesn't skip because it is fully serviced with a new stylus and a disc in good condition. If properly cared for the player and disc will produce flawless playback. Good clean discs don't skip. Skipping is caused by either the silicone that is coated on the disc to protect it from the stylus has settled in the grooves and the stylus has to push it back out, usually this clears up after a play or two, or the disc was stacked and the grooves got crushed, there is no fix for this.

    • @AcAwesomeAndrew

    Hey! Im having an issue with the 3rd reduction gear on this model, it spins forward but the gear that tells it to spin back isnt engaging so its just trying to push forward a track that has no where to go and damaging itself. The loading function gears in the back are also not engaging since this started happening

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 4 месяца назад

      That would be the first I've heard of that. So what you are saying is when it reaches the end of the disc, instead of stopping and reversing it just keeps going forward? There is Daxi code at the beginning of the disc that tells the player when it's supposed to end. If there is a problem with the players processor IC it might not be interpreting the daxi code correctly and that's why you are getting issues. It would be hard to narrow that down without the the use of an oscilloscope and testing the points on the player control IC. If you can find a local electronics repair shop this might be something they could do. I can give you a link to the service manual. That's about all I would be able to do remotely, and it's not worth the cost to ship it back and forth. I do offer a replacement IC if a repair shop does determine that is the issue.

    My 3rd reduction gear won't stop spinning until it breaks the teeth of the other gears, any fixes for that area?

    • @ketonicdude
      @ketonicdude 4 месяца назад

      You would have to determine why it won't stop first. Sometimes there is a sensor on the stylus arm that tells it when it has reached the front of the player. If that's not operating correctly then the 3rd reduction gear would continue to spin. There could be a number of reasons why this sensor is not working, could be a bad sensor, could be a bad trace on the board, a bad IC, etc. Once you get that figured out then you would have to replace the entire gear assembly if all the other gears are stripped. I can sell you a full assembly from a parts player if you need one. As far as determining why the arm won't stop, I'd have to do that in person. I can link you the manual if you need it. That's about the best I can do remotely.
