Musang King Durian. Is Bigger Better?
Просмотров 15 тыс.5 месяцев назад
We are curious whether bigger Musang King durian fruits have higher yield to fruit weight, compared to smaller ones. We did a simple observation by comparing the yield to fruit weight ratio on a small and larger Musang King durians. In our observation on two Black Gold Musang King durian, the larger durian seemed to have a higher yield compared to the smaller one albeit on a very small margin. ...

uncle, may i know what brand of watch you are wearing?
That was Huawei GT-3.
May i know which month is this yading, im planing to visit this too ...and which month is the most beautiful month to visit
We went early April. That was early spring. But, apparently autumn is the best to go with the best scenery. However, be prepared to be crowded.
I visited this fantastic place in August 2024 with my Chinese wife and the extended Chinese family, what a place, hard work at the altitude but worth every step. And just to add the big bad Chinese government allowed me, an English pensioner, free access to all the national parks and places of interest, unlike the really bad UK gov who just rob the OAP's whenever they can, well done China.
That's great. They do accord penssioners certain benefits regardless of nationalities. We look forward to make more trips to other amazing places in China in the near future.

Thinking of doing a Siguniang-Danba-Tagong-Kangding-Yaan-Chengdu route. When was your tour? 'Cos it looks like late winter/early spring and not May/June when you posted.
It was early to mid-April.
@@KCfaith Thanks for the info.
Asking a KL person if penang food is better? haha
Ha ha...
i tasted the blackthorn from penang island and think it is over-hyped. still prefer MK.
Absolutely!
Experienced any altitude related discomfort for the whole trip?
Absolutely, when above 3500 meters eapecially at Daocheng Yading. But, it was tolerable. Diacomfort at the back of my head, like having some hangover the next day after heavy drinking. The advice not rush and walk slowly to manage it.
@ good to hear it’s tolerable. The shops carry oxygen supplies?
Yup. Easy to find. It is good to get a tube in case you need them. Different people tolerates altitude differently. If u go Daocheng Yading, there will be a mandatory briefing at a location before reaching and oxygen, food, clothing, tonic drinks are availabe.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing this.
Hello may I know what is the best time for hiking to avoid big crowd?
That place is not that crowded so anytime is good. Ample space for eveyone. But, like any other hiking areas, go on weekdays or in the afternoon if you prefer less hikers.
Which route you took boss? Want follow your trail?
We were first time there so not familiar with the trails there. Our friend took us in via the Lotus pond check point and go up from the Big Tree check point. It is a very small hill, and am sure you will get aound fine. Ask other hikers whom are there.
厉害👍

hi can i ask how to contact guide to go to this mountain?
Don't need a guide to tour the area. Signages are clear, and am sure there are a lot of resources in the internet. We engaged a local tour for 15 days visiting many places in Sichuan, therefore there is a guide and driver to fetch us around.
Thanks for sharing. Nice hiking experience.
very nice video . I am 1st timer going there soon (no hiking before , only cycling) what do I need to prepare myself before going ? how much water need to be prepare? thks.
This is generally considered a short hike but with elevation and lots of tree roots, so got to pay attention. Bring a hiking pole or a stick. Water wise depends on individual. For me 1 liter should be good. Enjoy your hike

Great video and nice to see it without much snow. I just came back from Daocheng Yading. We had a winter wonderland up there. Milk lake was also closed. Beautiful landscape!
Thank you. It was spring when we went, so less snow. Guess we both did not get to meet milk lake.
Durian is so expensive in western countries where I am living now being sold at almost 120 AUD for a good quality and size
My friend in Melbourne buys frozen musang king from some asian grocer. He said they were as good. I don't know how much he paid though.
Hi! I would love to have your email to connect on how your trip fom sichuan to tibet. I'm planning a trip in April. Thank you!
Hi. You can ask here and if there is anything that we could share, we would.. Generally, we bought our own air ticket and arranged a private ground tour package from a tour agency from China on this 15 days trip. There was 7 of us. So, one van, with one tour guide and one driver. There are many agencies offering such tours and we signed up with Kunming Comfort Travel. Website as follow: www.kunmingcomforttravel.com/
We tried to summarize our trip in these 8 chapters in this playlist: China Sichuan Travel Road Trip: ruclips.net/p/PLS8aJtySO4H17ayhioRPQ3wB_YIRqDkNC
Thank you for sharing your findings. Well done!
You are most welcome

How to buy 10 durian
on which day of the week did you visit :D
It was during weekend.
03:00...08:40
我喜欢猫山王榴莲,但是中国没有种植,只能靠马来西亚进口
Which is the nearest train station to the Eco Park? I heard there are shuttle buses dropping you near KL tower. Is it walkable from there?
Take the Kelana Jaya Line LRT and stop at Dang Wangi Station, or take the KL monorail and disembark at Bukit Nanas station. Those who use the Ampang Line LRT need to disembark at Masjid Jamek LRT station.
My top 3 commercial durian, black thorn, MSK & 101
Thanks for sharing. You guys did a great job 🎉
Thanks. Not per what we planned. Milk Lake was elusive and so we made the most out of our trip by enjoying what the nature offers
@@KCfaith everything else was beautiful enough 👍 may I ask you some questions about the area? We’re planning on visiting the Daocheng and Litang area. Wanted to check if they still accept cash there or if most businesses have transited to online payment
Shops cannot turn down cash but problem is they probably don't have the exact change for you. Best to activate QR payment - either WeChat or Alipay. They are accepted almost everywhere. We visited Litang as well, one of the highest township above 4,000 meters
Hi , may I check will there be high altitude sickness ( 高原反应)?
Depends on individuals. We were ok, but we did come across a youngster succumb to AMS. Sold him my cannister of oxygen since he needed it. Advice to walk slow and do not exert oneself.
Can we park outside cbn school and access the park on a weekend? Thank you
There are only two entrances into the park. Even if you can park at CBN, I believe you'll have to walk a fair bit to either one of the entrances.
Thanks …. I understand better after watching this video. Being a durian lover (am Singaporean), I’m always unsure about the difference so I usually stick to Musang King which is creamy ( no fibre), bitter ~sweet & fleshy. Recently bought 3 durians ( all for myself 😁).
Glad it was helpful
nice one uncle 🥰😋
😊
More bigger more 🐷
@KCfaith When you talk about yields on the durians you experimented. It gives me an impression that you are also an investor in financial market.
Ha ha...
Next to experiment different shapes of durian of same quality and weights..how many pulp/price ratio
Ha ha.. certainly round ones will hold more pulp because they would have more compartments. We learned that odd shaped durian would have less compartment and some very small compartment is empty. But, odd shaped durians have higher chance of tasting better because all the nutrients are concentrated in the smaller number of pulp.
Thank you for the experiment. Do notice that the rounder the durian, the bigger the seeds as opposed to the ones with sharper ends.
Thanks for the tip!
So, go for rounded ones but with sharper ends to have higher chance of getting smaller seeds?
Actually, I did the observation based on your experiment.
Oh.. I don't think so la.
@@KCfaith sorry, I don't have the experience..
i always wonder too, good effort. hope to hear more of yr analysis. if my poor maths interpretation is correct, husk surface area increases in a bigger durian by factor of 2, whereas the volume increases more by a factor of 3 thereby explaning the higher percentage of pulp & seeds as seen in yr table
I think it depends on the husk weight. I realize I made a typo error in the composition percentage of the husk in first durian (a) 1.14kg although the weight captured is correct. The husk weight composition should be 68.4% instead of 64.4%. I suppose the study on these 3 durians is for some rough indication and a bigger sample will be needed to be conclusive in terms of ratios. A comment in this post from someone who has made similar observation suggested the pulp weight ratio to fruit for MK is around 25%. My observation for these 3 fruits was 23% to 24%. Quite close though.
Uncle. If everyone take the good ones. Who take the bad?
Hmmmm.... knowledge is power. That's how the world works.
good stuff, generally musang king pulp yield is 25% of the fruit weight and I wish to do this experiment too by sampling 50 durians of each size (50 is the minimum to be statistically significant). But from my experience, I think the yield and flavour varies widely from fruit-to-fruit due to quality of the durian farm (how often the leaves are pruned, fewer fruits per branch, fertiliser etc) which we can't observe from the durian itself. Though there are signs like smell, stalk size, husk colour, thorn density, shape etc. but each can be a confounding variable so picking a greater-than-good durian takes experience. But in terms of size, I generally find most satisfaction with medium size fruit for the best flavour, texture and quantity. Small ones tend to be more moist and bitter but fewer servings, while bigger ones have more quantity, flesh is more dry but simpler in flavour. Medium ones are right in between.
Thanks for sharing your statistical findings on the 25% of pulp on fruit weight, and the qualitative aspect of the different fruit size. This is really insightful. Is there a reliable way to choose a musang king with thin and light husk? Reason being, this area can significantly impact the weigh composition of the pulp yield like the third fruit weighing 1.4kg that we observed. The seeds were great, but husk was super heavy.
@@KCfaith For yield, I heard "light" durian is better and having more compartments is good too (5 star vs 4 or 3 star). Choosing a durian that is light for its size and high number of compartments could yield more flesh than husk so it's better value for money. The underlying reason I believe is because durian flesh is less dense than the husk (I haven't verified this yet but a quick way to measure density is to use the a water displacement test)
@@theanalyticalcook this is true, as lighter durians of the same size tend to have smaller seeds.
This was interesting to watch 👏👍
Thanks for the visit
Why not compare the flesh weight to cost? That would be more precise instead of comparing the fruit yield. Just my point of view.
Thanks for the suggestion. Those fruits of different sizes were of similar grade at RM66 per kg, so whichever that have better yield per kg would be the winner. That's why we did not take the cost into consideration. But, if they were of different price points per kg, the fresh weight to cost would be relevant. For example, if smaller size durians are sold at lower price and bigger ones at higher price per kg at similar grade, then it will make sense to compare yield in cost. That's why with this observation, we think it is probably more worth while to go for smaller fruits if they are priced at lower price per kg.
@@KCfaith My mistake. I thought they were of different grades.
Wow. Cool... Walaupun duduk selayang tp xpernah naik lagi😂. Btw drone apa uncle pakai tu?
Selayang dekat je. Pergilah. Drone saya mavic air 2s. Dah usang.
Why compare size of seeds? more interested in texture and flavours
Other than texture quality, we wanted to know the composition of the pulp in a durian variety i.e. which variety has more, hence we weighted and husks and seeds to derive the answer. MK won in this aspect.
@@KCfaith thanks
true. Musang king has the real durian taste compared to black thorn.
Very good video shooting , and I like it very much your drone view. thank you
Thanks for the compliment. It's a nice area to hike.
