Just a dude trying to make interesting video's about things I like, and hopefully you enjoy them as well!
Gear Update - What I bring to the Range
Finally, after two years, I made a new Gear Loadout video for the range.
Many things have come and gone, and now I think I have finally dialed in the setup with all the necessities and none of the extra baggage that was taking up space.
I have reduced to about 40-50% of what I was originally bringing to the range every time I would load up and head out to train or compete. Silly, to say the least, but coming from an operating background, I couldn't forego items that I thought I "may end up needing," but I can officially say the things that are gone never got used!
Hope you guys enjoy watching!

Another quick performance review.

Another run from the same training day, now working transitions between two targets & transitioning positions. Working more set-up and fundamental work, being able to steady my reticle, and acquiring targets quickly are my weak points when I’m under the clock. I will continue to focus on this to increase my proficiency and fine-tune my processes to perform fundamentals correctly as I slowly inc...
Training & Critiquing

Focused training is crucial becoming more proficient at any skill. You must be focused and brutally honest with yourself and your performance, if you cannot be self critical and accept your flaws you won’t grow. Here I am showing my first run raw and cold, & then my second run warmed up. As you can see I started off much quicker in run 2 as opposed to run 1, but that little confidence boost of ...
Types of Bolt Manipulation

Couldn't get this out of my head for about 24 hours so decided to post about it. Different types of bolt manipulation can be applied to many different types of applications. There is not necessarily a correct answer to how this can be executed. I go over a few different types, definitely not all of the ways to handle the bolt, but the most common that I have seen over the years. Let me know wha...

Time Stamp 6:32 Garmin Xero C1 Pro, got defeated by the autocorrect!! 😂
Another awesome and very informing video especially for beginners like me I want to get into long range shooting competitions
That rifle looks sick as hell. Where do we buy it or where can we buy it forget it
So you would have to get it built, it’s a custom rifle , each part is hand picked to be put together. I intend on putting together a video in all the components of my rifle soon!!
I run a very similar setup with a matrix Pro. You don't hand load?
How do you like the Matrix Pro? I haven’t had a chance to mess with one yet. And no pure factory ammo for me. Maybe one day. When I have more time to..
@@matthewsolo5162 i have two of them. One Matrix Pro and a Matrix Pro 2. LOVE them
@NBKmediaPRS awesome I gotta get some hands on time soon!!
Great video Matt! I’ve ordered a pair of thunder beast bipods, but they are still on backorder. How do you like them? I heard you mention that most of the time you run them as backups to the MDT. Keep the videos coming!!! Subscribed!!!
I really like them, and I run them a lot, but recently, I've noticed that on the East Coast matches, there have been many instances where the Ckye pods had more advantage with height or just removing the bipod altogether. But when I'm training on my own, I will run those TBACs. Guess it just depends on the venue really 🤣
I notice your legs are evenly spaced and the rifle pretty much splitting them. I naturally prefer to bend my right leg and wondered in your experience if that would result in a performance issue. I just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to watching and learning. Thanks, Matt!
Not necessarily; you may find a shift in your impacts when you do this initially, but if you do it every single time, then it will be consistent, and you should be good to go. Because if you zeroed with this leg placement then everything you line up. Ideally, you want to bisect the body with the rifle, but because everybody is different and may not be able to set up the same, you can have slight differences to get comfortable and consistent, which is key. Consistency will be the most important thing to dial in trends and correct them as needed or adjust for them, whether that be physically or mechanically.
@@matthewsolo5162 I typically zero my guns off my bench. However, as I dig deeper into the field of shooting I’m seeing more reason to vary that typical approach. And while I’ve shot rifles my entire life (60 now) my only official training would have been Basic Training in Ft Benning in 1983. My service as a National Guardsmen didn’t get much technical work, or at least I don’t remember much. My range is at my home and although it’s just 300 yards at the furthest, I might be able to see some of what you’re saying in impact shift by varying my prone positions. Sounds like a great test to try! May not get to it quickly but I’ll try to let you know how that goes. Appreciate the quick response! 😉
That's awesome. Please let me know! I have definitely noticed a difference when I zero off a bench compared to prone shooting. When I zero off the ground, I tend to have a .2-.3 shift left for the point of Impact. I've grown accustomed to zeroing off the ground because, as I get deeper into competing, the majority of my shooting is not in the prone these days.
Reading the win takes a lot of practice. And a hell of a lot of luck. A top quality rifle in cartridge in the hands of an average shooter. We'll still be About a one inch group or bigger. A 3mph wind, They will never. Notice a group change. The last several years everybody and their brother seemed to call themselves a sniper. The funny part is.People don't even know what the term snipper means. The military trains expert marksman not snippers. The long range precision shooters of today would make these people look like kids with b b guns
Agreed, that's why we have to constantly practice. Most people cannot out-shoot their rifles, but that will be the first thing they blame for missing! It's surprising how many people don't realize how much work it takes to be a true professional, and that goes for a lot of different topics, not just shooting.
So calculated using a given a set of atmospherics, does this still hold if the temp goes down, like in winter ? or if the density altitude changes ? ...or does one have to do these calcs for every location and atmospherics one finds for that day ?
You absolutely have to check it every time you’re in a new environment, I’ve seen mine go up an mph and down an mph in higher elevations and lower elevations. So it should be part of your prep when you first get to a new area.
@@matthewsolo5162 THX !!
Of course!!
Great video, Matt! What is in that pouch on your right side?
It’s technically an NVG pouch but I use it for my Terrapin. Believe it’s High Speed Gear or Blue Force, can’t remember.
The newer PRS skills stages are a ton of fun too. The hardest is the pan stage for us.
Completely agree I like the new style as well!!
I tried to use this method in the geo ballistics app. My data was correct(I think). I tried for 6.5 CM data and .300 WM data. Both yielded results that seem a little high to me. 20mph and 13 Mph for gun numbers respectively. What other inputs might I check to see if I entered all the data correct?
Since I can’t physically see your solver screen. I would check. MV being input correctly Twist rate input correctly Direction of wind full value (9/3 o’clock) Make sure you are looking at only wind no spin drift included. Make sure direction of fire is at 12 o’clock
Thank you for the explanation very easy to follow and understand.
Glad it was helpful!
Alright, gotta ask. Why is your level set up on the right side of the rifle if you are a right handed shooter? I typically see it on the left so you can check it with your off eye while keeping the main one on target. I have mine forward as far as I can get it and upside down compared to yours so I can actually see it while looking through the scope, it just kinda hangs out in the bottom third of my reticle. I like it. But I'm one of those both eyes open shooters so perhaps that's why.
So I have the second one on the right-hand side if I have to shoot off-hand, normally there is always one stage at a match that requires it. And because it is already much more difficult than shooting normally, I added it because I could not see the level on the opposite side. Is it necessary? No, but I wanted to give myself the ability to do the same thing on that side that I do normally.
🇺🇸💪🏼 What tool kit is that? And why 2 levels?
It is a fix-it stick tool kit, one of the most useful tool kits I have ever owned! I use two levels for when I have to shoot with my non-dominate hand, I still can check and make sure my rifle is level when I am connecting to it from the opposite side.
I gotcha, will look into getting that tool kit also 🤜🏼🤛🏼
@@swift__ I think that is the right choice!
In USMC I was a Helocopter mechanic. We called this stuff Torque stripe. It was kinda like cake icing that would harden. Used just like your using it to get a visual indicator on a loser ing bolt. Typically followed up with safety wire. HMH-363 SEMPER FI 02-07
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that is where the original idea came from!! Once you find something that works no reason not to use it where it’s useful elsewhere!!
I’m scope shopping. Never bought a scope ever. Looking at Schmidt & bender & vortex. Is that Khalid up there in top tier as well? I’m new to scopes. I want to buy once cry 😢 once.
Yeah Kahles, is up there with Zero Compromise, and Tangent Theta. They are very expensive. If I were you I would try to get a chance to look through each scope you’re interested in to make sure you like it and it’s resonates with your eye. Each scope brand has unique reticle which I think plays a huge part in selection, you may like the scope but hate the reticle which leaves you in a tough spot.
@@matthewsolo5162 great advice thx u . Iron sights & red dots are only so much fun.🤩 Cheap shit ain’t cool 😎 And cool shit ain’t cheap
@@romeofoxtrot363 100% but I will warn you the buy once cry once mentality has never worked out for me which is why I have multiple items of each hahaha. But at least you can attempt to make the smartest choice the first time which will help reduce the damage to the wallet|!!
Thanks, gonna run this for 338 norma and 300 prc imp prob be too high a wind number to make it easy but we will see in a minute.
It should definitely work, but it should make it easier to accommodate for wind with those size boomers!
Doesnt really work with minutes does it .
@@EChunter it does!!! I have a video for that as well. ruclips.net/video/peRWa2AZeIc/видео.htmlsi=QhiSSbK5OcXvvLUI Not sure you can click here but if you scroll through my stuff it’s just for MIS users.
@matthewsolo5162 ok thanks, appreciated!
Way overpriced, forend only 17”, others already went to 19”
It’s definitely expensive I’ll never argue against that. As for the 17” vs 19”, I don’t particularly see a need for the extra length, I don’t have the arm- reach to pass the forend length so it doesn’t affect my performance being 2”s shorter, although I can see potential to add another weight set if you had the length. Is there any specific reason you prefer the longer?
Whats the largest contour that chassis will hold ?
I’m not 100% positive but I have a competition contour on both my barrels that I throw in there.
Always a pleasure Matt thanks for this !!
Anytime! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Great video Matt as Always . Thanks for Sharing
Thank you, appreciate you!
Krg whiskey cheek rise is the most uncomfortable thing ever felt against my cheek bone. Get MDT or MPA
That’s just like your opinion… not everyone agrees with your cheek bone.
Thanks for this info dude 👍🏼
Any time!
My numbers does not add up at all. Using 4dof too...308 Example....at 300 meter...3 mph wind = wind drift 0.57. At 300m with a 4 mph wind....it jumps to 0. 75. My point.....I can not find my gun wind number...
@chrisdewet4384 what is you muzzle velocity?
@@matthewsolo5162 It is 1860fps
@@chrisdewet4384 okay I just changed my muzzle velocity to that and set wind to 90° at 3mph and it lined up correctly. 100m - 0.09, 200m - 0.19, 300m - 0.30, 400m - 0.42, 500m - 0.55, 600m - 0.68 So obviously rounding to the nearest 10th, your gun number is 3 mph out to 400m then it bumps up +.1 at 500m, so I’d assume it works out to 450m Make sure you look at the wind only column not total wind. The total wind column will be different cause it accommodates spin drift, and depending on which direction the wind is input from it will give you two completely different numbers.
Making sure your dope is right in your kestrel
That’s a good one, writing that down on the books right now!
it only works if you turn off real world effects (physics--spin drift).. you cant turn off physics when actually shooting. do the math with a 90 degree wind and its off with a 270 degree wind
That is only half correct, find the gun number without your skin drift is how you find your wind number pure. If you know you have a right hand twist and a 270°/left to right wind, depending on your caliber/muzzle velocity you can determine when it changes for example. My 6.5 cm doesn’t become a .1 deviation until 500 yds which is 5cm which is 1.9 inches. Which isn’t significant enough for most people to outshoot. And again this is a guess so it won’t be perfect. Now if you had a left hand twist rifle this entire situation would be in reverse, so it’s important to know the details of your rifle & bullets performance to know when to make the accurate adjustment.
it is 100% correct ..do the math at 90 degree wind and it does not work for 270 degree wind. your reply does not address what i am saying
@mark-rk3pr nope you’re right I apologize, but in the video and written on the board I address in the video @2:38 turning off spin drift… If you keep spin drift on my previous reply references what spin drift adds. I should have read that more carefully the first time I apologize. Either way it’s a technique you don’t have to use it, if you have something better that works for you I’d love to hear it, always looking for new ways to do things. This technique works for me quite effectively so I have implemented and continued to use it for years.
Great ''order of magnitude'' for wing calling skills, Matt.
Thank you I hope it helps out, wind is always the great equalizer.
Sweet tutorial…. cheers
Glad you liked it!
awesome explanation Matt, clarified a lot for me 👍🏼
I am happy to hear it was a useful video! Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Great overview!
Thank you! Hopefully it was helpful!
Thanks Matt.
What rear bag is that?
That is the Armageddon Gear Schmedium with sand fill.
Thinking in terms of target width in mph of wind could be a huge advantage.
Yessir, I always try to implement that, or stick to my 10 inch baseline that allows me to know if the target is larger width wise I’ll be good if I do the math correctly and apply properly.
Can you go over how you would take a standing shot unsupported. Also how do you evaluate how far out you would be comfortable shooting that way and target size for practice. Thank you
Posting answer now!
This helped a bunch. I figured out that mine is a 5 mph gun. Thx
That’s awesome glad to hear it was able to help you out!
Good run dude!
Thanks! I was much happier after missing the 1st 3 off the bay but followed up with some 1st round hits haha.
My wife and I just started PRS, and this is our first full year of shooting. We know all about missing. Feels great to start making impacts.
@nbkmedia511 yes it does!!
🤘🏻appreciate the info!
Any time! Let me know if you need anything else, I think I got this audio stuff sorted out with the new equipment!
Stage prep. How and why to choose what. Bipod height, using bag as front vs rear rest, tripod rear support, etc. if that doesn’t make sense I’ll try to clarify.
Uploading your Q&A now, should be up sometime within the next hour!
How do you get your rifle to shoots 175 grain 308 round to be 2700s fps? Mine is 24 inch 5 r barre and it only managed 168 smk federal god match 2635
When i shoot 168 grain my FPS is around the same as yours. The bullet having 7 more grains is what is pushing that velocity up to the higher bracket.
Not all loads are created equal. It may be that your using a slower burning powder or a suboptimal charge weight in your load. Try different ammo. AB39 out of my 22” barrel can be anywhere from 2630 to 2700 depending on the lot. Ultimately that extra 65fps isn’t going to make or break you for most applications anyway. Compare your data at mid range and I think you’ll be pleased to find that your probably no more than .2-.3 mil of difference between those two velocities at 500 meters.
That is true, which is why we typically try to keep lots and sub lots together when running factory ammo. Since we do not have the luxury of controlling all the variables like a hand loader. Typically that helps with consistency from what I’ve seen.
Great video brother!
Appreciate it!
Nice break down. Makes me want to do tripod practice
I need too, my prints were horrendous!!!
I need to invest in a taller tripod and get out more. I have a short 0311pig one w/an rss head that is great for glassing. But I might have problems with bushes and screens using it for hunting😂
I have the same one that now is either for the camera/phone to record, or spare for glass as well. It served its purpose as a shooting pod while it lasted, but there’s just too many more suitable options these days.
@@matthewsolo5162 yep, as I’m learning more about this I see some crazy things I never even thought of like prisms etc. Its really science!

Is the butt of the stock in your shoulder pocket or closer to your sternum?
The butt of the rifle is as close to my neck/sternum/centerline as I can get.
Thank You for the excellent explanation! I've struggled trying to understand "gun number" but you explained it so well.
Awesome! I try to keep things as simple as possible, because it can very easily get complicated when trying to break down some of these topics.
