Lost in Honam
Добавлен 13 май 2022
This channel features abandoned, historical, or natural finds spread out across the Korean Peninsula's southwest, a region known as Honam (호남). The region, comprised of North Jeolla Province (전라북도), South Jeolla Province (전라남도), and Jeju Island (제주도), is where I live and expend most of my creative energy.

Cleaning an Ancestral Shrine in Korea | 오효석의 사당 청소
Просмотров 103Год назад
Here I peruse a few sadang (사당, ancestral shrines) on the western fringe of Gwangju, South Korea. The one I sweep out is the home of Oh Hyo-seok (오효석), who fought in vain against the Qing invasion of Joseon in 1636. The final shrine I visit ends up being very personal. Enjoy! The song used is “A Forest” by The Cure (1980), though with Luna Lee’s trademark gayageum twist. ruclips.net/video/OQdVa...
Archiving Wallpaper from Century-old Hanok
Просмотров 818Год назад
Professional hanok restorer @baemui.naru shares his newfound passion for wallpaper archiving with me. We peel through the layers of this century-old hanok to reveal Japanese colonial-era prints, old Hangeul documents, and wallpaper spanning many decades of the last century. The song is “Kayagum Heemori 가야금 '산조' 중에서 회모리” ruclips.net/video/3WLQEBnaoIk/видео.html
Unfinished Suspension Bridge at Ongseong-san | 옹성산의 새 출렁다리
Просмотров 381Год назад
Ongseong Mountain in Hwasun County has a suspension bridge that’s so new, it’s still unfinished. In this video, I may or may not be the first person unaffiliated with its construction to cross it. The bridge leads to a cliff overlooking Dongbok Lake, a large source of drinking water for the city of Gwangju. The track is "From Where to Where" and is my favorite song sung by Kim Jeong-mi. Enjoy!
Abandoned Shrine and Seonun Temple Hike |버려진 사당 & 선운사

We check an abanoned family shrine, a pair of rock tunnels, a gorge, a 1,000-year-old Buddhist carving, a prayer room, and a mountain viewpoint at Seonun Temple in Gochang County, North Jeolla Province, in South Korea. The song is one of my favorites sung by Kim Jeong-mi.

In this video, I visit Beopseong-po for a quick hike up Daedeok-san and then munch on some gulbi and gejang for dinner. The song is “Milan Blue” by Fromm.
Jindo's Polluted Paradise (Deserted Beaches) | 인적이 드문 진도해변
Просмотров 265Год назад
Jindo’s beaches tend to suck, but I recently found two online that looked great, so I wanted to find out why nobody visits them. Surprisingly, the real reason isn’t the pollution… The track is Yu Ji-na's rendition of "Jindo Arirang" (유지나 - "진도 아리랑"): ruclips.net/video/MvT-WpPg6Ws/видео.html
Abandoned Driving Range & Hotel in Korea | 혼자 골프 치기
Просмотров 157Год назад
In this episode, I golf at an abandoned driving range after not having swung a golf club in 10 years, after which I share a few clips from the adjacent derelict hotel. The tune used is Luna Lee’s haunting gayageum (가야금) rendition of The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” In a nod of appreciation, to date, it’s the only song I’ve ever used twice. ruclips.net/video/z0QDf0xt-40/видео.html
Why Nobody Visits This Deserted Beach in Wando, South Korea
Просмотров 241Год назад
I recently spent a week at the beach on Sinji Island in Wando County, and this is one of my adventures. This video is a little tribute to a hiking excursion I made to one of the island’s deserted beaches, where I quickly learned why nobody ever visits it. The tune, titled “Song of the Sea” (바다의 노래), is played on the gayageum by a blind teacher and her protégé. Hope you enjoy it. ruclips.net/vid...

Abandoned Yeongsanpo, Naju | 버려진 영산포, 나주
Просмотров 185Год назад
This video shows a variety of abandoned places around the old Yeongsan River Port in Naju, South Jeolla Province. The port used to be a significant center for trade and foreign influences until the national railway and highway systems made the river less practical for transport. In the video, we explore a shuttered Unification (Moonie) Church, long bamboo alleyways, (semi-)abandoned hanoks, and...
Gwangju's Half-Dead Amusement Park | 지산유원지, 광주
Просмотров 354Год назад
This video is of Gwangju’s Jisan Amusement Park (지산유원지), which is clawing its way back from the brink of slow extinction. In short, it’s the little amusement park that could (or couldn’t), and that’s what endears me to it. The song is called “Secret” and is great for a long drive.
Knife Rock in Boseong | 보성에 있는 칼바위
Просмотров 119Год назад
Knife Rock (칼바위) is a one-of-a-kind rock formation at Obong Mountain (오봉산) in Boseong County (보성군). Some say it looks like a bird’s beak, and others say it resembles a toad. To me, it looks like a surfer’s-eye view of a wave cresting. Appropriately, the song is “Knives Out” by Radiohead.

That about sums the place up!
Hi. Can you please tell me how you find places like this? I go to visit similar places too, but I live in the north of Korea.
in Gyeonggi-do Province
@@Jack_Tsoy haha I was going to say -- North Korea??? I drive a lot and am an obsessive map nerd (KakaoMap). That's how I find most things. Over the years, I've developed a good eye for spotting these pockets of rot.
What camera did u use?
It's a GoPro 10 Black. Also, all the editing and captioning for this video were done using the GoPro app that comes with the camera.
the dizz knee land song was my favorite part
727-222 Adv built in 1980 with series 100 yokes? Interesting, but the 72 was fantastic!
Very cool!
The house itself is an antique.
Right, and we only checked maybe 2% of its wallpaper. It's probably got so much more interesting hidden history.
Such a cool hobby. It's not for me, personally but mad respect for specificity and a care for the past.
Thanks, man. I never thought simple wallpaper could tell such a story.
This is the kind of content nobody ever sees, unfortunately, but everyone should.
Sad
Good old N746OU
You touch and don't use gloves....
I even used my mouth to inflate the life vest. Eek!
Sick. Getting access to places like this without any crowds is always an incredible experience!
Yeah, bragging rights!
Amazed by the absence of an insect invasion due to the open doors.
Same here. I'd guess the door had been opened fairly recently. I should revisit this fall and see how things are now.
Enjoy any bokbunja whilst there?
No, but that would have made for an interesting drive home!
the scenery is amazing
Thanks! It's the discount version of 순천만. :)
Good food
Yup, that meal was 22,000 won per person. Loved every bite of it.
Been meaning to check this place out for a minute. Looks really peaceful and satisfying!
Be sure to hit up Baeksu Coastal Road (백수해안도로) when you do. We would have but ran out of daylight.
@@lostinhonam will do! Thanks for the tip, man!
Ah, this is the one at the former Sungwha College, isn't it? The place got shut down in 2011 by the government due to corruption, I believe.
What country is this in
South Korea
@@lostinhonam thank you
Look like awesome spots! Have not made it out to Jindo yet but plan to, so thanks for the heads up on the rough seas situation. My dumbass would’ve jumped in unknowing haha. Also- Had not realized this and Haenam were part of Honam!
Yeah, I recall you going to Boseong to see the tea fields -- that's Honam, too. It's a huge stretch of the country. :)
@@lostinhonam wild. Had no clue haha
@@brick11s :)
This is a great personal estate! I've met Yangban in his photo exhibit last week, and heard you also know Yangban :) Hope we could explore together near Honam someday.
Oh, yeah. I heard you guys met. Let me know if you come around Gwangju. :)
Anything skatable in there?
Not really -- just the big, open parking lot and maybe the indoor pool, which you could use as a dock. I bet the echo would blow out your eardrums though.
I enjoyed watching it
Thanks, man.
probably not surprised to hear that many of Taiwan's non tourist beaches are quite similar. Especially if close to a harbour.
Sad but true. When I spoke about this beach with my Korean teacher, he jokingly said, "If nobody goes, there's a reason."
You're good at filming and editing videos 👍🏻 National isaiah Geography
Thanks, dude! I appreciate it.
Cool. I wonder when it stopped flying and what airline had it??
I wish I knew, too. A university used it for a while to train stewardesses, but that university failed long ago, so it's now just sitting around.
It's ex United Airlines N746OU. Google that registration to see her in her original colours
I'm always watching it well
I hope you reinstalled the Emergency exit window / Door, to keep the Weather out...
So many good memories! I managed to log around 6.000 PIC hours on the 727, a great plane. Thank you Boeing.
WTH¿
This is definitely a Korea of by gone era but it’s fascinating to see a place like this even as vandalized as this still hold so much history.
Looks great!
This is absolutely beautiful ❤️ I love seeing different cultures of the world and different languages and lifestyles great job 👍 and video.
Your channel is to good to only have 165 subscribers. 😮
Back at it! Glad to see more of your explorations. Awesome as always. The stuff pple leave behind in places almost makes it seem like they’ve just vanished at times. Hard to comprehend.
Don't think I could explore that on my own. I'm just wondering if that's fake food cuz looks fkin fresh to me

It just needs a respray and a service and it’ll soon be back in the air. The food is well preserved.

Rural South Korea :)
Another banger. Beautiful shots and framing as always. The speed ramping is super satisfying for some reason haha. Sick spot.
Thanks, man! Timelapses overlaid with music are oddly meditative.
Have you found any locations for a DIY skate spot? 🤔
The Japanese-era tunnel in Naju would be interesting, plus it's protected from the sun/rain. However, the ground is a bit rough. Rough ground is unfortunately the norm.
Nothin wrong with a little Knives Out. Those mountain views are insane.
Hi i'm jinu 😊

Haha, you don't give a shit about copyright strikes at this point, give the money to Yorke and Co.
This one passed the checks with no issue. Use live versions!
