My name is Allen and this channel is dedicated to my HO scale model railroad layout. The channel primarily focuses on the construction of the layout with twice-monthly updates (usually every other Friday), but also includes randomly posted operations videos as the layout progresses. I enjoy receiving feedback and suggestions regarding the layout, and have made a few changes along the way based on great viewer-recommended ideas. The layout is based on a basic linear path from El Dorado, Kansas to near Salida, Colorado, a path that I traveled many times growing up with my family on our summer trips to Colorado. There isn't much to see along that route, especially in western Kansas/eastern Colorado, but the railroad tracks, primarily belonging to the BNSF, parallel almost the entire route. Other roadnames represented on the layout are the Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Thank you for watching!
Cab Ride Tour of the HO Scale Kansas & Western Railroad - 9/20/24
It's been about six months since my last cab ride video. I thought I would do these every so often in order to view the layout from the track level perspective to see how the layout has grown. This time I chose to exclude the staging level and the helix runs since those don't change and there's not much to see. I might include those again someday, especially if the interest is there. Enjoy!

Incredible trip around the layout! Very enjoyable 🙂
I'm glad you liked it! I've watched it twice myself...kinda relaxing, like most of the cab ride videos out there. It really feels like you're on a train ride with the best view!
Im wanting to see a video on how to wire a helix, because I I'am building one for my layout, could you make a video on this subject????
I'm afraid with both helices built out already that I couldn't really make an effective video of how I did it, but I can refer you to my earlier videos of my construction playlist. Videos #5 through 7 or 8 show the progression of the first helix. Here's a little description of the electrical part of the work. Basically what I did was add two branches of 14 gauge main bus wire from the main wire that feeds the track for my staging level, and ran them up two of the support legs for my first helix. At every level of the helix next to those two legs, I connected feeder wires to the track so that power was supplied to each rail of each track on either side of the helix, ensuring continuity of current. I think you can see this pretty clearly on several of the helix construction videos. It has worked flawlessly thus far. I've seen others run the feeder wire along the track as it runs up the helix too. My way uses less wire and there's less current drop, but I'm not going to say it's the best way. Let me know if you have any further questions, I'd be glad to help.
@@KandWRailroader I will try your method of wiring, and I'll let you know how it comes out"
@@petemotley535 Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions along the way although it really isn't a complex plan. I'm sure you'll do fine. 🙂

Smooth track work! You get a different perspective from this view, and everything flows very nicely from one scene to the next. You have also captured a realistic feeling of purpose for your railroad; industries, yards, passing sidings, communities, geographic areas of just Mother Nature. On a resin printer the model Prints upside down. Those supports are printed along with the walls mainly to support the roof of the tank to the base because the walls wouldn’t provide enough support for the roof.

@@derekalexander4030 Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm not sure I will use that other camera again, the resolution was disappointing.
Thanks for the review. It looks like a good product and company. I appreciate the integrity of purchasing your own but I don’t believe that anyone, in the future, would think it was a biased review if you were to have accepted the products but I understand that it was a first for the channel.
@@derekalexander4030 I probably won't make a habit of buying my first product from other companies that may want me to promote their stuff, if it ever even happens again. I enjoyed doing the review though and would do others if asked. I look forward to showing the final painted product. I already cleaned off all the excess material which was much easier than I thought it would be, now I just have to paint it.
@@KandWRailroader Jim Tedesco does a live show and has multiple printers and does a lot of printing at very reasonable prices for other modelers. I looked at some of his tank cars that he printed and it appears that the lines are inherent in 3d printers but not in resin printing. Some people sand the lines and others use fillers. He changed the tank cars by using pvc tubing and then printing the ends and details separately.
@@derekalexander4030 That's interesting. I chose not to worry about the lines and see what a coat of flaf black does to them. It would be difficult to send with all the details around the tanks anyway. We'll see how it turns out.
I thought that you purposely reduced the height of the rock in the next area to make the transition to a lower area. If it was just a lack of materials and it will have to be treated differently, my opinion would be to get scraps or another piece to finish it the same way. Trying to stick trees and stuff to cover the difference will always look different and the more finished area that you have done looks amazing. Don’t change the old family recipe, lol. Just my opinion, you’re railroad.
@@derekalexander4030 You do have a point, there's no denying it. However, I have decided to try something different in that corner, partly because I don't want the entire thing to look the same from one end to the other. I think the creek kind of acts as a transition between the two sections, which is my made up excuse for getting away with being lazy...LOL.
As I am looking at it, you pointed out the space between the parts and the base as a bad thing, I wonder if it would actually work better as you would just add your substrait to that level depending on your modeling style.
@@foxtrotdeltausn4757 Several others have suggested that strategy as well so it must be a good idea!
Much better than yesterday... and when buying these things it would be good if they came with instructions... I find that buying stuff online from overseas it just comes with the item and no instructions or even pictures of how it should look after all the printing supports are cut away.. maybe that is something the manufacturer might take note of.. They look just ideal for what you want..
Last night he emailed me photos of how it should look and the prototype from where he got the design to help with details and paint colors. I'll have to print those out for my update after it's painted.

Does this material seem to be harder or softer than styrene? Does a sprue trimmer work well for removing the sprues in this material? Thanks for the review, the detail looks very good.

Most mountains don't have trees on top.
I guess that would depend on the height of the mountain. I believe the tree line is roughly 10,000 feet, no? At any rate, the Royal Gorge Park and bridge is at about 7,000 feet in elevation and the river (the part I'm modeling) is about 1,000 feet below that. My cliff face is maybe only 100 scale feet high so I think some trees on top might be semi-realistic at least. Either way, I'm really just trying to mask the transition from rock face to benchwork, so it's an issue I'm willing to ignore.
I was not sure of what elevation you were working with. For what it's worth, I did something like your mountains on my last layout, I used lichen to add vegetation to the mountains side. I used hot glue to hold it in place. Anyways, food for thought, not sure how deep that top of the mountains is, I think you could also get by with a road skirting the edges, the mountain top mixing in tr
@@Mark-z5m3e I think your method is what I will be pursuing, using vegetation of some kind to kind of hide the fact that the rock face just disappears. The top of all the rock face is only a couple inches wide so there really isn't room to do much else. At any rate, if viewers spend too much time focusing their attention on my transitions at the top of the rock face, then I've done a horrible job modeling the actual railroad at the bottom and may need to re-think the entire hobby...LOL.
The first thing I noticed was the date was wrong on the recording.. it says... 2023/05/29 so are we time travelling ?? lol.. also the camera is slightly out of focus it is focused on the switch and draws beside your left hand... I 3d print some stuff for my layout and other items around the house but they are not resin prints they are FDM prints. Resin prints tend to capture a lot more detail but the curing process is costly compared to FDM where you print it and then use it or remove it from the base needed to help it stick to the bed when printing layers upward... The cactus could be used in the Royal Gorge area with a few more of them... Most of the items on the website look very similar to items anyone can download for free from various 3d print sites and print with their own 3d printer of either FDM or resin... Some of them I have already downloaded the files and have stored ready to print when I get to the scenery phase of my layout witch will be minimal. The prices seem ok.
Oh wow...I didn't notice the date! Unfortunately no, we are not time traveling. 😢 I will try to do better with the focus next time, it was my first time using that camera and I couldn't even find the zoom! (found it after the recording). I had looked in to getting my own 3D printer at one point but decided it wasn't for me. I wasn't aware of the availability of free-to-download files (one of the reasons why I decided not to get my own printer), but the owner tells me he is generating his own designs all the time and simply needs time to add them to the website. Not having any experience shopping/buying/using 3D printed models, I am really starting from scratch with all of this, but I'm impressed so far. Thanks for sharing!
Those pieces look great and $45 sounds like a bargain! Very cool for you to get someone to exchange some screen time for products that you need for the layout. Sounds like a win-win to me.
Agreed! I'm going to get them cleaned up and painted in time for my next update video so everyone can see what they look like with their "Sunday best" on.
