How to Hem a Lace Wedding Gown: with Appliqués, Beadwork & Horse Hair
Hey Ms. Christa--new to your channel and hoping to get some info on hems for slippery little fabrics such as satins and chiffons. The first method of the rolled hem has helpful; I assume (though I don't remember you specifically saying so, that when you make the first row of stitching with the final hemline shown, that you are sewing the wrong sides together? And do you stitch about 1/4 inch past the chalked hemline for the stitch line so when you turn it again, you have the exact chalk line on the floor? Sorry if this seems like an obvious question, but I haven't sewn garments in a very long time (reverted to quilting as it was 'easier' (ha ha). I don't have a serger so the second method is out for me and I just did a narrow zigzag on the chiffon layer and trimmed all the 'fluff'. I have rolled hem presser feet but can't for the life of me figure out how to use them and didn't want them sailing through the front window in December...). Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year 2025!
I watch Halmark movies or diy decorating channels
Oh I love those too! It’s so great to have something playing in the background. 😊
Super easy to follow... invisible items and all. Thank you for sharing. Brilliance.
Oh that’s awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know. God bless and Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you for posting this! So helpful.
I’m so glad it was helpful
Terrific videos ‼️
Thank you !! ♥️
What you said about being calm I think it was a really big thing
Yes, 🙌 always remain calm. There is an answer. Sometimes a few answers. ♥️ Thanks for watching!
I think you got an inch and a half. I’m saying this before you really say how many inches you got overnight
I think you are right. 🤗🙌 I would have to go back and watch to remember but I’m pretty sure you are spot on. 😀
Just bought my daughters wedding dress yesterday! Tho I’ve been sewing garments for two years I have very little experience with lace. This video has given me the confidence to tackle hemming the skirt.
Yay! That’s awesome! I’m so glad it can help you in this exciting time. Congratulations on your daughter’s upcoming wedding and on finding the dress. And how amazing that you will be able to help her with the perfect fit. Happy Sewing and God bless! -Christa
dear Christa, I love your Videos, I am looking to you in Berlin, Germany. I have a small studio, a have 8-10 brides in one year. I love your tipps and I look how you are sewing. I hate trains 😅, how can I find the place for the buttom and the eyelett ( I hope this is the exat word) .Please videos with trains. Thanks from Germany and happy thanks giving ❤
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! I’m so grateful to have you on the journey with me. ♥️ To find where to put the button and loop (eyelet) I just pull it up many times trying to figure out where it would work best. Every dress is different. Sometimes it’s hard to find the perfect spots.
Thank you! I appreciate how detailed you were on the steps. My daughter’s dress just arrived and I have 3 weeks before the wedding to have it perfect.
Congratulations! How exciting! And 3 weeks! Wow! You got this. So glad I could help during this amazing season of your life. Happy sewing! -Christa
@ her dress was perfect and she was so happy with it. Thanks for your help!
What would you do if it’s a black dress and the markers or chalk won’t show through.
I would probably mark with safety pins and then when I turn it inside out, I would mark with chalk. Or even then putting pins on the inside, Then remove the safety pins from the outside 😊 Hoping this works for you.
@ thank you!!! Thank you for the tutorial. It was exactly what I was looking for.
I mainly create special occasion dresses. I do some alterations, learning so much from following you
I love it! My favorite type of sewing. However, I never get to create anymore since I’m so busy with alterations. That’s one thing I want you to add to my 2025. Time to create. Thank you so much! Have a blessed day.
I started working at a bridal alteration shop in august, so this is all new to me. It's been pretty busy, but slowing down right now. I love learning everything and want to learn all there is to know about bridal alterations! ❤
Congratulations! That’s exciting. Being in an actual Bridal Shop will give you so much knowledge about the industry and all that they go through in the selling and the ordering process. It will really benefit you on the alteration side of things. This coming year I hope to have lots of new videos that can benefit you. ♥️🤗 I’m excited to get to be part of your journey.
@christasdressshoppe Thank you so much, I'm really look forward to it! 💖
🤗
I am excited to venture out more on my own. Tired of working for Corporations. Would love tutorials on various Bridal gown hems, and other alterations with sleeves or other more advanced alterations
That’s so exciting! It is so freeing to be able to set your own hours etc. You will love it! I will create some video for those types of alterations. 😀
Yes, we got that weather today in N. Idaho. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Oh my goodness! Are you ready for winter. ❄️ I’m not. I don’t know why it took me by surprise. This is the season. I guess I was just busy getting things done and I didn’t think about winter. lol You guys get much more snow than we do here in Southern Idaho. Happy Thanksgiving by the way! 🍁
Hello Sewing Friends! I’m sew happy 😃 to have such an amazing group of sewing friends on here. Tell us how your 2024 Bridal Season went. What would you change for the 2025 season? What went really well and you want to do it again? Let’s celebrate that! 🥂 🙌
Thank you for the video. I am adjusting my wedding dress for my daughter. She wants to wear it for the evening dance part of the reception. I made her prom dress myself but adjusting the dress to fit her felt overwhelming, but after watching this I think I can do it. I lost my mother a year and a half ago, so I know how you feel. Prayers for you. I appreciate your advice and tutorials.
@@2Minababe I’m so glad the video will help you! ♥️ I’m so sorry about losing your mother. It’s so hard. Thank you for your kind comment. And congratulations on your daughter’s wedding. It’s such a blessing that you can work on it for her.
What bustle would you do for a tulle dress?
Most tulle dresses work best with an American bustle of one form or another.
Do you only do alterations or do you also sew weddings gowns? If you do sew please can you make a video on how to cut a simple wedding gown
I do only alternations at this time. However, my business started with custom gowns so it is something I used to do. Maybe I will get a chance to do that in the future. 😊🥰
What do you charge for a dress like that? I also do formal gown and wedding alterations.
Oh gosh, that all depends on where you serve your community. There are variables between alteration charges depending on the economic area you live in. Other variables that could be involved are if there are additional layers and what they are made from, or what the volume of the skirt is. But just to give you an idea how the range between bridal, bridesmaids or other formals might go. Possible amounts I would charge if it was a basic bagged hem. Bridal - starting at $250 Bridesmaids (usually they are not as full) - $95-$120 Prom, other formal (usually have more volume/fullness then bridesmaid) $120 to $150 These are loosely estimated I hope that helps you figure out your pricing. Look through other comments on this video or other of my videos. I have broke down a way to figure out your prices quite a few times. You should be able to find a comment with much more detail. 😊 Hope that helps! God bless and happy sewing! -Christa
Thanks a Bunch this is what I needed!!
Yay!! ♥️ You are sew welcome!!
This is by far the best bustle video. Thank you. I just hope I can find the right buttons😊
Thank you!
This is by far the best bustle video. Thank you. I just hope I can find the right buttons😊
Thank you!! I just found some similar buttons in a pack of mixed crystal buttons at Hobby Lobby. They were not quite as good quality, however, I used them on many gowns this last month and they looked great on the gowns. The original ones I get are from JoAnn’s. You can get them online at JoAnns as well. Many blessings! -Christa
This is by far the best
🤗♥️
Appreciate your patience & detailed explanation. God bless You abundantly. Tons of love from India ❤
Oh thank you so much!! 😊 Many blessings!! -Christa
I saw your RUclips channel. Your videos are very nice. But due to some problem in your channel, your video view and channel subscribers are not getting. May I explain in more detail if you allow?
You can get free tips from me if you want.
This has been super helpful as I have a very similar one to tackle. I thought the plumb line was such great idea! Also I had been thinking of introducing a 'false seam' so your demo has given me confirmation it is the right way to go. Thanks again for sharing
That’s awesome! Yay! That makes me so happy! Happy sewing! Let me know how it goes.
Wonderful.. many thanks. But I can’t figure out how to turn it right side out! I did the hem leaving an opening to turn the dress. But it looked like I had made a big 29:03 error. So I turned it wrong side again.. can’t turn it ! Many thanks
Is there a trick to turning it at the hem side.
Hello 👋 😊 Open up a lining side seam to then pull it to the inside out position. Then sew. Then pull back through the side seam. 😃 No worries! We have all done that. lol 😅
All your tips are spot on. Stuff that I have learned through trial and error. I would've like to see how you adjusted tension on the chiffon layer. I have a Bernina similar to yours. I also never use the 4th thread spool on fine fabric.
Thank you!! I’ll have to show that on the next chiffon gown I do. I’ve never been super exact with my tension. I tend to just bump it up or down as needed for fabric or thread type. It helps if you have a scrap of the exact fabric to run a practice stitch on before putting the garment in. 😃 Thank you so much for watching and for a great question to talk about on video.
I was curious as to why you don't use a seam gauge for measuring seam alterations rather than a tape measurer? Additionally, when I'm sewing soft tulle or chiffon I cut strips of tissue paper and pin it under and on top of the seam line I'm going to stitch. It helps to prevent the fabric from catching on the feeders and it gives the fabric some stability while sewing.
Hello 😊 Great questions! I used a seam gauge way back in my earlier days. 🤔 But I’m trying to think why I stopped. 🤔🤔 I don’t know. Maybe because I always have a measuring tape around my neck and it’s just easy to grab. 🤷♀️ The tissue paper idea is a great tip!! I’ve done that in the past. And especially on hard fabrics or to start out a rolled hem that’s on a slit. To keep the it from bunching up into the plate. Thank you so much for two great tips!
Wow! You are amazing Christa....Very clever. I love your tutorials. 💕
Well thank you! You are so kind! 🤗 Thank you so much for watching and making my day with that sweet comment.
Danke mein Kleid ist super geworden 👍👍👍❤️
That’s awesome! I’m so glad that it turned out great. Thank you for your beautiful comment. ♥️
That really looks good! I always use a cloth when steaming. 100 Cotton or linen. I can’t bear to touch on with an iron. 😱 Tips for my next gown.😊😊
Thank you!! My iron has a guard. I learned the hard way years ago and never put a bare iron on my projects. That guard acts as the cloth. It keeps it from scolding. I believe it’s called “iron glide”. 😃
I see said the blind man! As my Daddy used to say. My jaw dropped. I have cut the bottom appliqué off and lifted. I loosed the appliqué fingers and re stitched them. Saved days of picking. It still gives me the heebee jeebees. Thank you.
“I see said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw”- 😂 my dad said that too. lol 😂 Yeah, it still scares me a bit at first. It takes me a bit to map it out in my mind. Where I will cut and pull up etc. I probably spend too much time thinking it through. But better safe than sorry. lol
@@christasdressshoppe I do the same! I call them “church dresses” I cuss a bit and pray a lot. Had a lady laughing ask if hers was a church dress. It was ALOT. I told her nope. “Revival dress” It took all week. 😈 You know that we have to laugh. Enjoy those terms on Debbie from Alabama! ♥️
@@debiperkins love it!! That’s great! Especially the revival dress. 😂 I’ve had many of those.
Danke 👍
🥰
I fold and pin my dresses up. Remind them to stand straight, shoulders back. I cut it off, after I press my hemline, I have them come back and try it on. It takes more work, but it has worked for me. I do the shoulders and the bodice first!
Great advice!! Yes, how they stand makes such a difference.
As a seamstress, I always like longer. What’s a hem to a remake?
Me too! 😊
Thank you for this tutorial. I have a dress that I need to put darts in. Was thinking that I would have to take the lace off then resew it Wasn't looking forward to that as it has beads and sequins. Have you taken in a seam this way as well?
That’s awesome! Glad I could show you a way to do it when there is too much beadwork. Or the appliqués are hard to remove. Yes, in the good old days LOL, all my bodice alterations had me removing the appliqués and beads. But that is also when the base structure of the gown was made out of bridal satin. I tried doing the same to these new tulle bodice gowns. Sometimes it works ok to “peel back” the appliqués and do the alterations. And I do peel back the appliqués for many alterations, such as the shoulder seams. However, many times the appliqués are so stuck to the tulle that removing makes more of a mess. Thank you so much for watching! God bless and happy sewing! -Christa
I do have a question. If the boning is going to be where the dart will go through do you take it apart to the point where you can put the dart in then resew the boning back in place?
Thank you so much for this bagged hem tutorial! I’ve got 3 gowns in my sewing room now with bagged hems. Seem to be seeing more and more of them. I appreciate your instructions so much. I love Duke, your 🐈. Have a senior rescue dog with the same name. He’s my sewing assistant. 😂
I love it! We all need a Duke 👑 to “lord” over our sewing projects. 😂 ♥️ 🐈 🐕 Yes! I’m getting so many bagged hems these days as well. I don’t know why so many designers are doing them. 🤷♀️ Have a beautiful day! -Christa
Thank you this is different than the way I used to do it and it was very helpful.
Thank you Laurie! I’m so glad you learned a new way. 😊 Have a blessed day! -Christa
You do beautiful work. Just found out my daughter is getting married this spring and we are going dress shopping this week. How long do big hem jobs like this take (she is short so odds are the dress will have to be hemmed at least 6 inches) and what are the usual costs? I can't find real info on this anywhere and wanted my daughter to know before choosing a dress. Thanks much.
Thank you so much! Congratulations on your daughter’s new engagement! 🎉 🥂 ♥️ Time depends on how many layers, how many appliqués and/beadwork needs to be removed and then replace in the new location. And it could take a different amount of time depending on the seamstress. I think I worked on this one off and on for a week. It was a much harder one than most. It had all the challenges possible. lol Cost will depend on all those things as well, and also depend on your location and the cost of living in your location. I’ve seen hems like this range all the way $250 to $500 and maybe more in big cities. But whatever they charge, just know a lot of work went into it and it’s worth every penny when she walks down that aisle. 🤗😊
I’m so excited to have found this channel! I am a bridal stylist at a shop which does not offer an in house tailoring service - so answering brides questions is based on my limited knowledge and my own vision for what can or can’t be done. I have been thinking about getting into bridal alterations on my own for some time now, since I’m very familiar with the industry and atmosphere. However, it’s the technical skills where I’m lacking at the moment! I am looking forward to watching your other videos and learning along the way :)
That’s so exciting!!! Thank you Shay! I am so glad you found me!! I’m so blessed to have you on the journey with me! 😊
Would you mind sharing you invoice or at least a good example of what it may look like? Thank you :)
Hello ♥️ Yes I don’t mind. In fact I think I have a video showing one of my invoices. I’m trying to remember which one. Let me think and I’ll get back with you
It might have been on the sewing tip- transferring a diagram. I show my invoice in a few different videos. But I will try to show it again in future videos
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with this video! I'm a tall woman looking for a solution for a silk dupioni gown. Thankful to not be in a time crunch yet
Oh my goodness. 🙏🏻 Be careful with silk. Water stains it. So go slowly and carefully. You might also think about adding a decorative panel either on the bottom or at the waist. This could extend it and look like it was part of the design.
Wawa’s has those snaps. I use them all the time on my bridal dresses.
Yay!! I will check that out. Thank you Debra!
Thanks for this video! I know nothing about sewing 😅 so this was really interesting and informative😊! So I have a question: What do you do if you don’t have access to matching fabric? (My situation: I’m 34-27-37, top to bottom, and A dress that I’m wanting to possibly buy resale, the D294-Jasmine from Allure Bridal’s “Disney Fairytale” collection, is too short because it’s been altered for a 5’4” bride and I’m 5’9” and will be pushing 6’0” after heels.😵💫 … we are the same size width-wise though. My other option is the same dress but this one’s 2 sizes smaller in width (a size 0, for a 23ish inch waste, I believe) but no alterations were done to it at all , which will give me the length I need.. it’s also $500 more than the shorter one… Which would you suggest I go with? 🤔 Here’s the dress : kleinfeldagain.com/products/d294jasmine?variant=48650068558122 it doesn’t look to me like it can be taken out in the waist at all, as it doesn’t look to have any seams along the hip area🤔
What if your tulle dress has a slit and you want to sew it up?
You can sew each layer closed. A gown that has a slit from the factory should have a seam at the top of the slit. Close up the seam all the way down to the hem or if the bride wants a smaller slit, close it to the length she wants. If for some reason there is no seam above the slit, you will have to create a seam in that location on each layer. I hope that helps. 😊
You are so clear and helpful. I really needed to see how to do this. Thank you!😊
Thank you so much! 😊
I use to do bead work / necklaces/ earrings and also beaded my daughter’s wedding dress. I like the individual containers with lids best. When beading I will use a micro fiber cloth to put the beads on prevents them from rolling around makes it easier to quickly pick up a bead. To sort I will dump my mixed beads on the micro cloth then using a long thin beading needle I can quickly pick up same type of beads and then put them in containers. I also have a long thin tweezer for larger beads which has a scoop on the end which makes picking up a bunch of beads easy.
Love it! These are great ideas! The microfiber cloth is perfect. And picking up and sorting beads with the needle is amazing. I do that to sew, why have I never thought to do it to sort the beads?!?! Amazing! Thank you! Have a wonderful day! -Christa
