Quick one here, just wanted to see how this clip worked. Really happy with the outcome! 4K 60fps, handheld with the sigma 60-600 and it never lost the focus on the bird. Im a big fan of the fuji xh2s, but the animal subject tracking during video was brutal. This is a pretty big game changer for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s far more reliable. The Fuji wouldn’t have had a chance here, the z9 go...

      Glad it was helpful! I’m no longer in the Fuji system and don’t really recommend it for wildlife if you’re choosing which way to go. But if you’re already a committed Fuji shooter, the newer cameras are a big improvement over the old ones.

      @@joec33 honestly depends what you’re looking for. The canon r8 is hard to beat. With either the 800f11 or 200-800 f9 if you’ve got a bigger budget. I’m currently shooting the Lumix g9ii which beats the heck out of most stuff I’ve shot. Pairing it with the 100-400 mkii, or the Olympus 300mm f4. The Lumix kit would be smaller and better video. The canon kit would have the full frame image benefits. Sony doesn’t make anything in those price and feature points to be competitive and neither does Nikon.

    Hi Mike. I have had the G9II since the day it was available in my camera shop. Before that, I had the G9 and this lens was a breath of fresh air for me. I am disabled and can now shoot with my 25mm Summilux lens at 1/8 sec without a tripod. I have had prints made of 80cm x 50 cm and they are razor sharp. You now have a very good tool for what you want to do with your camera. And not only in the field of wildlife or bird photography but also in other areas this is a very strong tool. I enjoy every day that I go out with my G9II. And I go out with a prime 25mm/1.4 and a prime 45mm/1.8. This combination almost fits in a lunch box. Good video, friend. Antoine, the Netherlands)

      Yea honestly I’ve been thinking about if I miss anything from other kits and the answer has been no. I’m more than happy with the image quality and the compact size has been a game changer for me. I did buy an s5ii for full frame portrait lenses, but even that was more of a luxury than a necessity. I sadly had to put one of my dogs to sleep this week, and my favourite photo of him from the last year was on the g9ii with the 75mm Olympus lens. I’ve got lots of apsc Fuji shots of him that I love too. Yes, the full frame lens tests I’ve got of his face over the years are nice, they’ve got more bokeh etc. but when I’m sitting here missing my buddy and looking at photos that move me, the last thing I care about is the bokeh.

    I have both cameras now, unfortunately I bought the X-H2 just one day before seeing this video. I bought the X-H2s first then the X-H2 for the higher resolution to be able to crop while retaining more sharpness and resolution. However in practice I can see no difference at all when cropping from either camera. Despite what Fuji claim, I suspect that the lenses just can't resolve the extra MP of the X-H2 (I'm using the xf100-400 and xf70-300 for wildlife).

    • @heymikeriley
      @heymikeriley 3 месяца назад

      Yea I never really saw it either. I’m shooting Lumix now at 25 megapixels give or take and I don’t really notice vs the 45 I had on the z9 directly before this. High megapixels are a weird thing. you need the right lens and right conditions. In wildlife, people mistake high megapixels for the ability to shoot farther away and crop in and that’s just not true. If you’re already close enough to get the detail then the high Rez cameras can let you crop more. But if you’re that close with the right lens, you don’t need to crop that much anyways.

    People should know there is no good reason the bodies to be priced differently other than brand name. MFT camera costs exactly the same as FF camera. Canon and Sony asking $6K+ for their bodies is just a way to rip off shooters who are working for companies or have too much cash at hand. I shoot both Canon and recently Pani, and i find the Pani way better value for money, easier to handle, and with more features than Canon gear.

    Hello Mike Riley you have to admit that every time you buy a camera you of course seem convinced that you have in your possession the best camera this was the case with the Fuji X-h2S with the Z9 here with the G9ii. When I look at your images here where some also benefit from a slightly pronounced sharpness adjustment on Lightroom to be honest I find the images sharp but at the same time not exceptional either now via RUclips it is difficult to form an opinion. In another video you seem to compare the RF200-800 with the 100-400ii and you even say that the 100-400ii compares... So when I see the image quality that I produce with my R7 and my RF200-800 I'm a little surprised... So while this comment may seem negative, on the contrary you made me want to test the GH7 or the G9ii with the 100-400ii! A friend has the G9ii. I often go on photo outings with it and for birds in flight I find its AF so much less responsive than my R7 but is it using the right settings? To be continued! Hello from France, Ludovic

    • @heymikeriley
      @heymikeriley 4 месяца назад

      Well for one, you can’t really trust sharpness on RUclips compression. But yes, the 100-400ii is absolutely just as sharp as the rf200-800. And that was just as sharp as the Fuji 200-800. I don’t really care about lab tests, but it in the real world, they’re all sharp lenses. The Fuji lens is lighter than the canon which was a win. The Lumix is way smaller and lighter than both, cheaper than both and fits in a tiny bag as a daily carry. That’s why it’s easily my choice. I personally wouldn’t use an 800mm lens on an apsc body and while the r8 gives you a bit more leeway in low light, I sold the 200-809 because I thought it was too big and I didn’t like using it. Not to say there’s something wrong with it, but I wanted a very portable wildlife kit and m43 did that better. I still very much like the xh2s, but the video tracking autofocus wasn’t reliable for animals so that made wildlife filming pretty tough. The canon and Lumix kits have been way better. I’d say the Lumix is better video autofocus and the canon is better stills, but they both work fine. I’d only switch from m43 for wildlife purposes if I knew I’d be shooting on a tripod at a hide or something.

I wish you lots of fun photographing in nature. Best, Ludovic

      @heymikeriley 4 месяца назад

      Yea sadly my library management was bad and most of the 200-800 shots I took in the month I owned the lens got deleted lol. Nothing of note, but would have been handy for image quality tests. Honestly the lens results are very similar. So close that I don’t think it matters. Form and function is where they differ. If I still shot canon, the 200-800 is a great option. I’d much prefer a smaller, lighter, cheaper lens like the Lumix though. Today I had a snake outside my office and was shooting it at 800mm from 4’ away, that’s pretty cool to be able to do. And it really compresses the background nicely too. But then, you’ve got to be comfortable using micro four thirds to get away with a lens that small. But the options are nice to have at least!

    I owned the OM1 and the 300 f4 with 40-150f2.8 and 12-40 f2.8. Great kit and some great pictures, AF all good but I really struggled with all the post processing to clean-up noise and the DR to recover shadows. So I sold all and went back to Nikon Z8 and the 400 f4.5, I love the 400mm for most of my wildlife work shooting mammals and big birds. Then had to opportunity to try the G9ii and the 200 f2.8 and the TC1.4. Yes the MFT sensor have it's limitations and that is why I keep the Z8 and 400 f4.5. Back the the G9ii with this lens. I often travel into Africa and want the smalles gear that can produce quality for these trips. Also a second body system for the Z8. This is where I will get the 40-150f4 for wider shots. I love the slightly bigger body of the G9ii over the OM-1. I also find the noise from the files less problematic and the DR to lift shadows better. I have not used the 200-800 but seriously f8 at the price is probably OK but this for my work is way to slow. I would rather shot wide at f5.6 than tight with f8. Great video.

    • @heymikeriley
      @heymikeriley 5 месяцев назад

      Yea everyone definitely has to get gear that suits their needs. I love shooting my z9 and 500 f4 when it all lined up, but it was just too big and unwieldy most of the time. When I had an accident and damaged it, I really had to think about what I valued in a replacement kit. I think it also comes down to subject. If I were shooting mammals, I’d probably look to a full frame and 400-500mm lens. But I mainly shoot songbirds and need 800-1000mm. The canon 200-800 is a great lens, but I’d take the Lumix kit any day personally.

    At 100% zoom I can see the 200mm has more "pop" (for example 18:26) as opposed to 400mm which looks more flat, but I would have loved if you zoomed more on than P1016421 so it's exactly the same size in the frame as the 400 one Is it the difference in f stop that creates this effect, or is it the lens itself? I wonder to what extent the fact you can use f2.8/f4 helps with producing more quality shots as there's just so much more light to work with P.S. Thanks for delivering on the video!

      I’d say it’s both, the shallower depth of field helps a bit, the lens is sharper, it renders better. I’m finding that up to 100% crops the 200mm is still delivering a sharper image but sometimes with less compression. They’re definitely both very capable and very different lenses. My summary advice, someone should buy whatever one suits their needs better. If one broke and I only had the other, I’d be fine getting results, so that reassures me for sure!

    Lumix 100-400mm is semi-decent in terms of sharpness. Olympus 100-400mm is noticeable sharper across the zoom range while being only marginally bigger. The problem is that it doesn't Sync with Lumix IBIS. Not a problem for stills though. Also: If you consider Lumix 100-400mm and Canon 200-800mm to have the same focal length you clearly mean EQUIVALENT focal length. If so, you also need to factor in crop factor to the apeture. Equivalent apeture of the Lumix is f8-12.6. Much slower.

If you want smooth backgrounds with any of them, you have to compose a smooth background. If you do, f13 doesn’t matter. If you don’t, f9 won’t save ya.

      @@heymikeriley Mike what you mean is that, indeed, f/4-f/5.6 is "faster" than Canon f/6.3-f/9 (by about 1.3 stops). In terms of EXPOSURE - all else equal, the Panasonic can run FASTER shutters than the Canon at a given ISO (reducing the ISO advantage of FF in that sense by an equal 1.3 stops). In terms of "equivalence", both lenses have a similar FOV and similar DOF. That is to say, they produce similar images. People confuse the fact that compression, and not just aperture, is what is "smashing" the background. Smaller sensors give up compression to match a given FOV, while larger sensors (like medium format), will have MORE compression for a given FOV. The benefit of MFT is, as you know, that lenses can generally be smaller. The wider aperture compensates for losing some compression. To make sure we don't hurt the feelings of those who spent more money, and carry more weight, we should say that, at the of the day, larger sensors and necessarily larger glass usually produces higher quality photos because surface area = more total light. But IMO that is more relevant to those that print large images, or those needing maximum quality out of a variety of crops that might be taken out of an image. I'm guessing 99% of people on the internet don't print. If they did, they'd know that iPhones make perfectly acceptable 4x6 images. But as you go larger, the benefits of the bigger sensors are more and more obvious.

    Mike great discussion and great pictures - it seems like you are getting a lot better at shooting wildlife as you keep at it. We need more people like you showing the masses that virtually any sensor size, combined with great glass, can take great shots if you know what you are doing. If I had all the money in the world I'd definitely give the Panasonic + 100-400 a try. It seems like a sweet setup. Any issues with the buffer BTW? I saw where, once full, it takes a LONG time to clear - like a minute or more. Very easy to hit the buffer limit on my XT3, but with UHS-II cards, it clears in about 8 seconds or I can keep shooting at a limp speed. I shot in misty overcast rain today, crappy sky, with the Fuji 150-600, mostly shots at 600mm f/8, shutter 1/250, ISO anywhere from 2500-12,800. Stunning and sharp images. It is all about how close you can get (despite 900+mm small birds need to be, I don't know, 10-20 feet away ideally, the closer the better). After that, it is about quality/intensity of the light or just having some direct light on the subject. It was overcast, but even at high ISO, I had enough intensity to pull out PLENTY of detail. In-camera JPEGs will look excellent, a carefully processed and "enhanced" LR session will be awesome. Though my setup is definitely easy to manage, it is pretty big, and having that little 100-400 would be sweet.

      Glad it’s helpful! The Fuji lens basically fits the description of the rf200-800 for me in the sense that I found it too big to carry around all the time. Granted, the Fuji lens is a much more comfortable lens to carry weight wise. I was and still am a big fan of that lens if someone is looking for a good Fuji option. The g9ii buffer is overblown. Yes, it does take forever to write the buffer to the card. But it also has a way, way bigger buffer than most cameras. If you hold down the shutter nonstop, it’s going to buffer out. But I’m about 10,000 shots into it so far and haven’t hit the buffer yet. I usually shoot 20fps raw and rattle off 5-10 frames every time I shoot. If I’m shooting action, I’ll do longer bursts but still take little breaks. Hasn’t caused me any problems yet. If I were specifically shooting action, I’d probably prefer the smaller jpg file sizes and shoot that instead of if I were having an issue.

      @@heymikeriley I get it - the Fuji is 100% a two-handed lens, even if it is relatively light and well balanced. With kids, you will not be shooting it one-handed. Mine is either in my hand, on a black-rapid strap, or in a backpack depending on what I'm doing. I've looking at cotton carriers or that peak design clip thing, but not pulled the trigger. If I knew I was going to nail the shot, I would shoot JPEG more often myself since it deepens the buffer and shortens workflow. But frankly it is impossible to know in advance if I'll be 100% happy with the exposure/noise reduction/sharpness/color/film sim/white balance that I've selected. That said, if I nail a shot in very good/high quality light, I am more than happy to just apply a film sim to the in-camera RAW with whatever tweaks and spit out a file, because the Fuji colors are often stunning. The main problem I have is with the resulting file size - a typical Large/Fine Fuji file is actually pretty darn big. So my option is to throw away megapixels (but what if I want a large print?). In C1 or LR I get excellent quality full resolution (after any crop anyway) JPEGs roughly 1/3rd or 1/4th the file size. Not to mention, I can STRAIGHTEN the image! Imagine that Fuji - a straight image! Can you hear me? I want to straighten in-camera! I also want compression algorithms built-in to manage file size/quality trade-off. You can't tell me they cannot do that - these beasts can already spit out "lossless" RAWs after all, at a million FPS.

    I have been shooting with Lumix G9II and 100-400 and I could not get many sharp shots with it. I recalibrated it (it was slightly misfocused) and this helped somewhat, but the lens was still too soft for my liking. I don't know if I want to try another unit or if I should go for 200mm/f2.8. In terms of everything else, I agree with everything you said in this video and am the same type of shooter, which is why I got this kit (and the camera itself is great, barring the fact it's almost twice as heavy as my old m4/3 camera), but what do you think about using the prime instead? I haven't shot primes in my life yet, but I hear this is an exceptionally sharp lens, but I don't know if the lack of versatility could be offset by the sharpness (sidenote: I'm not satisfied with jpegs at all and I always edit my raws, even if the photos are not exceptional). If you had to shoot with just one of those lenses, which one would you pick?

      I’m going to do some jpg vs raw testing soon, haven’t played around much with the Lumix jpgs but considering I’m typically running noise reduction on any m43 file anyways, the jpgs I’m seeing at first glance are really appealing. Honestly my first day with the 100-400ii was a mess and nothing was sharp. I took a breath and realized that I was shooting way too far away, cropping hard and the light was atrocious. No camera or lens I’ve owned would have been sharp there. I think it’s important to realize that a m43 sensor is already cropping for you. So if you are shooting at 100-400 for 800 equivalent, if you have to do major cropping then you’re just too far away. If you’re close, the lens should be very, very sharp. If it’s not, check your shutter settings etc and make sure you’re not doing something wrong. Shoot a teddy bear on a tripod and remove lens shake etc. if that’s not sharp, then you may indeed have a faulty copy. The 200 2.8 is definitely way sharper, I’ll be doing a comparison soon on them. I definitely prefer the images out of that lens, but only if I’m close enough to not crop significantly. The image quality is stunning, but 400mm isn’t long enough for a lot of stuff I shoot. So far I’ve only had success with birds at my feeder that tolerate me being very close. If I had a gun to my head, I’d probably take the zoom for the flexibility but I love that they’re both reasonably price and I typically bring both with me. I had dreams of shooting loons with the 200 and I started the early morning with that lens on but the birds just weren’t getting close enough and I was glad I had the other option with me.

I then recalibrated it and it was better to the point that the next time I went out I immediately noticed the difference and was like "woah so that's how it's supposed to be!" unfortunately though it was still a far cry from what I had hoped for, and as you said it must be the distance. I was happy with photos that were taken with a bird on a tree right above me (even in darker conditions), but I was terribly unhappy with whatever I'd get from shooting water birds or birds on much taller trees at 400mm. The only photos at 400mm I couldn't find fault with were those shot of still subjects (e.g. frogs) at 50ISO at high-res (lol). @@heymikeriley I get it - I'm not sure I'd enjoy rival brands quite as much either, not to mention the size, weight, cost factors. I'm dismissing your "lack of lens support" comment however, because you gave up on telephoto primes for very good reasons - and because I couldn't care less if they made a 600 f/4 or not - I'll never afford it or want to use it anyway. All the pros I know use zooms for everything, because versatility usually trumps maximum image quality. Punching in and out quickly is essential when I'm chasing small birds, insects, or my toddler. I still shoot on the lowly XT3, and it is pretty clear to me at this point that as Fuji updates the lens lineups, image quality and AF hit rates are going up. To me it is clear that the lenses have been the bottleneck in AF performance, to some extent. The Red Badge lineup is pretty consistently excellent, but an updated 100-400 would be hard for me to resist since it would likely spank Nikon's 180-600 or Sony's 200-600 for wildlife/sports etc. I'm no fanboy, however, I have a lot of gripes with Fuji. One is that they blew it with the XT5 - rolling shutter is worse, the buffer is worse, build quality went down, and no battery grip for those of us "photography-first" people that actually use Fuji's best and most versatile lenses (which are also the biggest, typically). I like the XH2/2S hardware in theory, but they turned the cameras into Nikon/Sony/Canon boringness. Nikon's ZF is a better approach - they included a PASM dial below the ISO dial. It doesn't fix the ergonomics of the body , but it grants the camera both "retro" and "modern" shooting approaches which is genius. Fuji should copy that for a future XT / XH body. Keep the soul of the cameras but let people shoot the "modern" way when its time for maximum speed or just preferable. Fuji also should lean into their JPEG processing even more - I want to straighten files in camera, I want better cropping/compression options, and I want to focus or HDR stack IN-CAMERA, for example. If the camera lets me setup the shot, it should be able to process it, basically. I don't want to have to get a PhD in Photoshop to do things like that. As a busy parent myself, I really, really appreciate just ripping the shot of the day in-camera, sometimes, sending it to my phone, then my mother-in-law, and saving the RAW file for the future when I can re-process it more thoroughly. That said, the film sims really are so good I'm not sure I need to bother with a re-edit half the time. The interface is a bit clunky however, and if the camera can do "exposure preview" whilst shooting, I don't know why you can't do it whilst editing in-camera. I have to keep hitting "Q" to check the change, and then "back" to tweak or move to the next adjustment. Clunky. And it eats battery. No, I don't setup JPEG film recipes and shoot away - anyone that shoots 100s of shots a day knows that the exposure/shadow/color/white balance etc. are moving targets so the recipe works for one shot and might fail the next 50. I hate that.

I want to like OM System, but I agree that the 150-400 is moot because most of the cars I've owned cost less, and the 150-600(and their 100-400, for that matter) are larger and heavier than they need to be for the system. Even if I won the lottery or got a big raise at work, I still wouldn't change systems. I'd get a G9mk2 and pick up the 50-200/2.8-4, but that's about it.

      Yea totally. My r5 was a great camera but it just never felt right to me. I only bought the 200 2.8 because ingot such a great deal but the 100-400 mkii is my daily lens for sure

      @@heymikeriley I had the R6 first, and I honestly think I was happier with just that. It sounds crazy, but moving to the R5 felt like a let down, I guess. I expected the extra megapixels to blow me away, and they just didn't. Had I spent that money on more lenses, I might have stuck it out with the system, but instead I just came back to smaller sensors and a smaller kit.

      Really looking forward to comparing the PL 200 2.8 to the OLY 300 f4. I’ve got a a buddy who has the 300 and we’ll do it when we can! I had the 300 a few years ago but would like to test them back to back. They’re both such great lenses that really embody the magic of the m43 system.

      triple the price and heavier. I’m not a fan of the 600 6.3 at all personally. I did love my z9 and I’m sure the z8 is awesome. Would never spend 6500 on a 6.3 600 personally though

    Man, I can relate. The whole reason I got into photography is because it’s more accessible with young kids than cranking up guitars and amps or trying to gig. I just picked one up G9 II for bird detection coming from an em1.3 and I’m debating ditching the Olympus 100-400 for the PL 100-400 II. Any experience with that lens when you shot em1x?

      I didn’t ever shoot the OLY 100-400 so can’t weigh in there. I know the PL in smaller and lighter which was a big draw. I will say, I just bought the 200 2.8 PL and it’s noticeably way, way sharper than the zoom, even with the tc. I’ve been using the zoom more for video when I need reach and can’t crop in, and then the prime more for stills. I do prefer the zoom if I’m out for a walk with the kids though. If I’m shooting alone and can spend the time to be quiet and get closer then the prime is definitely better. If I need quick reach, the zoom definitely has good image quality and it’s lighter etc. they’re both great options and the prime is being sold cheaper by a lot of places now. I just bought a new copy that was 35% off.

      The 200mm f2.8 with the TC can consistently be had for less than the PL100-400 and it is noticeably sharper and faster than either of the 100-400's. I found the 200mm f2.8 for a truly ridiculous price so I bought it even though I thought it would be too short for me, and I just love it. Beware scummy ebay sellers that try to sell it without the TC. The TC is part of the lens. If money was no option I'd also be looking at Nikon with the new 500mm prime in a comparable set, or the Sigma 500 5.6... or even Canon with the RF600/RF800. But with exception of Canon (stupid mount) those are many times the price for similar purpose setups.

      @@IsawUupThere that’s definitely a crazy deal. I got the 200 2.8 brand new for 3000 Canadian though, regularly 4000. I paid 2300 for the zoom, also new. I like both lenses a lot for sure!
