    I have 800 hours in Hell Let Loose and I thought I might like Squad so I picked it up on sale for $20. I got in and out of vehciles, used my shovel, ran around a bunch (very slowly), saw literally no enemies in a full server, lost two games, and after 2 hours of that I returned the game. I do hope everyone who likes the game enjoys it, it's just not for me.

    One thing you didn't really touch on much was spacing. In real life, people have no grasp of 10m, much less in a video game. That spacing makes it much more difficult to target multiple squad members at once, as even a grenade is unlikely to take out more than 1 squad member. The second thing is, people in video games tend to be much more careless, as dying isn't the deterrent it is in real life.

    • @HaebyungDance
      @HaebyungDance День назад

      Yeah I wish I’d talked more about spacing during the vulnerability section because you’re absolutely right. Really good point you raised.

  • @Sophistry0001
    @Sophistry0001 День назад

    It can be hard in games to really maintain a formation because you don't get the same intuitive visual and audio cues you do in reality. Natural field of view is probably close to 180 degrees which helps maintain spacial awareness to your team, but most games default FOV to around 90.

    • @HaebyungDance
      @HaebyungDance День назад

      Yeah I think it’s around 110 degrees. But also sound like the rustling of clothes or footsteps on the terrain do a lot to create our subconscious “spatial awareness.”

    Theres very little squad content involving actual clans doing tactical games, its a shame. One life events with slow paced tactics is an exciting rollercoaster of emotions, especially from an eye in the sky perspective.

    • @HaebyungDance
      @HaebyungDance День назад

      Yeah it’s because most of the Squad community wants hardcore battlefield, not milsim. SquadOps is the only major community doing one life events I’m aware of, and I don’t know how much traction they have nowadays. I would like to get a better picture of exactly how much of the community would actually like the one-life experience (not just the idea of it) because it requires a lot of work and discipline with comparatively less action, otherwise you just die early and it’s over.

    although I will say, it sounds like your "going in blind". Make sure to constantly check corners, angles, and scan terrain before rushing towards any buildings or directions. Make full use of scouts or reconnaissance assets to run ahead of your formations. Theyll help mitigate squad losses. I cant tell you how many times doing ninja shit, and just flanking, pincering, or waiting in ambush of squads of people worked. Absolutely loved rushing around front lines, to setup claymores/c4s to ambush those lines of respawns/or reinforcements. Sometimes its just better (in terms of survivability) to let the hordes of players run head first in, whilst you sit back with some binoculars/or high powered scope, and view the battlefield to find the perfect points of insertion to flank. Sometimes its just better to crawl around, rather then be meat for the grinder. Ninjas/scouts/snipers etc can do ALOT of damage using guerrilla warfare tactics against conventional forces when applied correctly lol. Never underestimate using hit and run tactics, or retreating actions, mixed with claymore/c4 placement, so that any ground lost, is immediately a deathtrap. People in video games LOVE to run to their deaths, and I ABSOLUTELY play to win or inflict MAXIMUM damage on my way out. Id gladly take a small team of 1 to 3 over squads and up. this translated equally into games like eve online as well, most casuals formed giant blobs of roaming gangs, whilst the professional mercenaries and alliance fighters, made full use of tactics to split formations up, lead the faster fighters away, pick off stragglers, employ extensive use of guerrilla tactics, (some ships warped faster then others, so ambushes were constantly set, as smaller faster ships would generally land on grid faster then the main fleet which left time to ambush extensively before fleeing to another ambush site, etc). Was an absolute blast working with SPECIALISTS over CANNON FODDER. We could regularly challenge groups 3-5x our strength and inflict crippling loses even if we lost the "BATTLE". In terms of the industrial side of things, we could win wars by attrition alone making our enemies burn threw ships/equipment etc whilst we kept our losses minimal, which meant we usually won the "WAR". Which is exactly what we got paid to do by our employeers, WIN WARS. Which is why most casual FC groups operate as simplistically as possible, which leads to fish swarm like tactics, ie everyone form and follow this guy, do nothing else, everyone align towards this direction (now an fc can just push a button and auto align the entire fleet), everyone primary this guy, secondary this guy, tertiary this guy. When you scale specialists up, a well trained squad makes full use of tacklers/recon/tankers/glass cannons/snipers etc, which means once a group of specialists come together as a full blown fleet, they can do an absurd amount of damage, ie TEST ALLIANCE, MERCENARY COALITION, FEDERATION OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS etc. Its not that conventional tactics dont work, theres a reason why the "standards" are used, and a reason why "specialists" tend to dominate absolutely conventional forces ranging from pirates/factions/and player factions. One of the biggest problems with eve onlines blobs though is that it was absurdly easy to just wait for them to show up with a disco party, smartbombs, bombs, aoe damage effects etc. The standard was so easy to counter that how it became a standard baffles my mind.

    I think the main problem is that surpressing fire doesn’t work in video games. You don’t get scared for your life just by having virtual bullets whizzing by really close. Very different in real life. If there is automatic fire above and your side cant surpass it, you’re not going anywhere. The main idea of infantry formation is to throw suppressing fire in the necessary direction (ideally from where people are shooting at you) to allow safe approach or retreat. That is not an issue in FPS, in my experience.

    • @HaebyungDance

    Love learning IRL facts when trying to figure out how to be better in a video game. Now for my thoughts on the video, in my own limited knowledge of mil sims I think this was very informative. But I also find that even without proper knowledge of formations I can find myself in one with random people without even talking, which is quite fun. Cool video all in all.

    It also doesn't help that an overwhelming majority of "players" (no matter the game or console/pc) are no smarter than the average 8 year old and cannot think for themselves, let alone to think tactically. I've learned from video games and real world experience that most human beings really aren't sentient creatures and are much more similar to an amoeba in a petri dish simply reacting certain stimuli opposed to being the apex predator we've evolved to be. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen entire squads where everyone decides to activate their lizard brain and scurry around like rodents, run into enemy fire, die, repeat, then lose the game. Like, if that's you, you are the problem. Video gaming is the ONE place in life where losing a match literally is other people's fault. There's nothing you can do if you are the only sentient, conscious, thinking human being on a team and you've got 31 other monkeys scurrying all over the place defecating on themselves pretending to play Battlefield.

    @SinnerD2010 3 дня назад

    I think you briefly touched on the actual #1 reason formations don't work, or don't directly translate with equal effectiveness would be more accurate. A lot of what makes a formation more valuable, is offered up for granted in most modern videogames. Most game maps offer pinpoint accurate data both friendly and enemy. Like you said these kinds of things are offered up for granted, and are for lack of better words, livefeed data. Even on modern battlefields this is never the case, sure you've been briefed, intel gathered, but until a unit is engaged or engaging, nothing in respect to when/how/where you will engage or be engaged can be accurately known, hence the need for battle formations and CORs. Like you said shape is for the most part not important, other than the fact that all within know the operational perimeters, thus at some level instantaneous data is conveyed between formation members, definitely not game map levels, but more than not. This is all true... However I believe more so than all of the above issues that plagues ingame formation effectiveness combined hail in comparison to metadata issue. That same map that works against your need for tight cohesion of formations to relay friendly locations, updated mission perameters, other changes, this becomes like a force multipler in that respect since the enemy has access to the same mapping system, under most IRL situations a squad will have eliminated a threat and moved on long before their positional data is/can be relayed and re-relayed, additionally there is no after death debriefs for the dead. Contrast to that, in videogames all it takes is one CoD style bum rusher(AKA most FPS players these days) and the effectiveness of formations only turns you into a juicy target for always seconds away anti infantry assets, whom all just got simultaneously clued in to your exact position, possible numbers, potential direction of travel, all from a should be silent dead guy. While data is more precious than self survival, you'll always get major inaccuracies with ingame warfare... and therefore different outcomes for tactics used within. Any FPS that has player respawn, and map sizes that are abysmally small compared to our real world size will always have this issue.

    As a War Thunder player, my thoughts on formations and leaders has mostly to do with coordination. If each player had a job, from spotting to pinning the enemy to advancing, games would go much better. You wouldn't have random enemies sneaking behind your lines and shooting you in the back, because the team would be coordinated, covering every approach. I'm sure Squad has similar things, where some dude with an MG finds an unguarded alleyway to sneak behind you and mow your team down. So rather than formations, I think these games would really benefit from having a chain of command to designate tasks, and players that actually followed orders.

  • @Mikalent
    @Mikalent 4 дня назад

    One thing I will add, and this is a big thing with applying anything from real life to video games, death doesn't matter to people in video games. They know if they're cut down by MG fire, head shot by a sniper, or suicide charge with a live grenade, they can respawn. If they can't, then either the match is about to be over, or they can just shut down the game for a day. In real life, you get *ONE* life (that we know of), so people tend to be much more conservative with that life. It is rare to see someone charge a Machine gun bunker in the open, or be brave enough to try and move through a snipers sightline without some sort of plan to either minimize the risk to themselves, or when faced with no other option. That is the most important difference between the two.

    @JAmediaUK 4 дня назад

    Formations DO work in video games. I have seen it done. However, this was by a team of former soldiers. They were all well drilled in using the formations, they worked as a TEAM and communicated. So discipline and training were the key things. The other thing I noticed is all of them, without any discussion, were using semi-auto fire. This was again down to training and discipline over years. Something you are not going to get with a bunch of random civilians who don't have the training. The other thing is if you don't make your team objective this impacts on other units.... Also remember video games are for FUN. It doesn't matter. The Military training is real world where if you are dead you don't come back in the next game. It is a completely different way of thinking. Do you really want a 3 month 24/7 training regime before you drop into a computer game for some fun and relaxation?

      @@HaebyungDance Hahahahaha, SHAME ON YOU. OUR PRECIOUS MINITANK REDUCED TO AN INFANTRY FIGHTING VEHICLE! Now jokes aside, one thing ive been thinking about squad's APC/IFV underutilization, is how numerous and ubiquitous other forms of transportation is. Like if you have 50 "disposable" (for the avg gamer) trucks, why would you use an "expensive" APC to do the menial task of transporting infantry, when that 50 cal can shred other vics? I think reducing logis to only 4 seaters (like vdv), removing transport trucks and making APCs more numerous, would go a long way to help the game work a bit as intended. And since we would have more "armor" in the game, an increase on IFV/MBT ammo mag capacity (like the recent bmp change but reversed) would fix that right up.

    The bewilderment about the amount of kills at the end of the round is something many can probably share in and why I tell others in an engagement to "just SHOOT". Not only does it supress enemies but you might also get some lucky shots in. Of course, it depends on the situation since it might also just give your position away to and enemy that might have previously not been aware of you

    0:45 useless in real life as well until you realise the formation is approximate to the nearest hard cover. Like if the tree line is slightly curved, your squad line is going to move to match it. Rather than have half your squad in the open or too deep in the tree line.

    Somehow this felt like a love letter to my gameplay. Good shit dance! I enjoyed the gameplay, some really good moments there esp the fob takedowns. A few things to talk about/criticize would be: -Never go out without a medic. Theres just never a reason, in squad, why you wont have a medic. THAT SAID, you seemed to be ok on using rallies to respawn than heal, so i think it works out. I heavily prefer to maintain 0 or the least amount of deaths. -I think the mission profile was a bit miscommunicated in the second vid (the total side confusion 5 mins in part), and would help a lot more to make sure everyone knows their roles than just "lets go to sq 6 to support". Still ended up ok, altho both the humvee and AA was lost. -A thing you do dance and would like to point out, is that you open the map too much in situations where the priority SHOULD be to finish a fight. Obv i get the reasoning and your way of doing this, but i do think that it might be bad for the viewers to not prioritize solving the "local" situation first. Maybe a good topic for a video? Either way, kudos!

    • @HaebyungDance
      @HaebyungDance 6 дней назад

      Thanks man! - Yeah I talked about it with another commenter. No medic is a spicy decision but we played a very specific way to compensate with the rally as you noticed. We do also have a very different style from TTC where we don’t mind trading deaths for a goal. - There was a lot of comms in the start of the second round I cut out. It definitely could have been smoother but the mad scramble at the start of round was kinda fun ngl - I both agree and disagree on this. I do tend to get buried in my map a lot but I think most people have the opposite problem and don’t open their maps enough. Placing down those markers and making callouts is so important in pubs. This is one of Squad’s “gameisms” with the divisions of roles between SL and others. When I SL I tend to feel and function more like an officer than an NCO. But again, different styles I think. In 7th we regularly run 50-man teams whereas TTC is a highly specialized fireteam or squad, which creates different pressures for the development of our SL styles.

      @@HaebyungDance Yep definitely insightful to see different PoVs. One note is that i wasnt really talking about TTC on the third point. I also think its important to mark targets and do the general SL stuff, but i think there were moments were the situation might have been a lot better being dealt with locally, then shared, if that makes sense. Either way, good shit, i wanna see more!

      Yeah makes total sense - like I said, I definitely do open my map too much. But it's a habit born out of needing to coordinate with other clan SLs while relying more heavily on FTLs to fight the local fight, if that makes sense. As always, thanks for the comments man.

    👏🏽Well said. Former SSG Ev@&#$$ 2/75 in 2007, LRS in 09-10, Infantry; rifleman, saw gunner, team leader, squad leader ETS in 2016. Ranger school in 09, EIB, CIB blah blah. Just saying, I've been involved in small unit tactics and platoon and squad ttp's, movements, assaults etc. That is for you Haebyung Dance. From me to you, great work helping others to understand these somewhat complex concepts. For everyone else, I would say so far this is the best video I've seen outlining the correlation of real world doctrine tied into Milsim/FPS/whatever gaming. And 100% agree if you want this to be effective it's the individual battle techniques of each person tied into the overall patrol, action or battle drill that will make it happen. I would love to get involved in helping to deciminate this message to fellow gamers who seek to apply real world tactics and strategies to the gaming environment, if not to at least defend the authenticity of what I spent 10 years of my life doing and teaching to my guys. It would make me feel some purpose again in old skills. Thanks for this video and if anyone has any additional questions let me know I'd love to help.

      Hey man - first of all, thanks for the super nice comment. I served for a brief period but I ETS’d E-5 with a short stint as a rifle squad leader in the ROKMC and I worked really hard to teach my guys what they needed to know even as I learned myself. So someone like you leaving a positive comment really leaves me humbled. I don’t know if you’re on Discord but that’s the easiest way to get a hold of me, and the link to my channel’s community is in the video description where you can find and DM me (Dance in Discord). Real life tactics will never work in a video game simply because ITS A VIDEO GAME and you can respawn. I can sit and hide in a bush and wait for a full squad to walk by and mow them down but there’s a high possibility that I might get shot/killed by someone in that squad or someone in another squad. But since I’m in a video game I can just come back to life and do it all over again. In real life most people try to preserve their life so they typically wont run off alone and try to be Rambo. There’s just no real world psychological factor in video games.

    If the chat is a clusterfuck, prioritize squad chat. Some factions play very different from one another. Even if your new, dont be afraid of taking the initiative. Remember that people play to have fun. Dont be to hard on the "wrong" kits. If your a new squad leader, start by back capping and hold defense. You will get frustated. Carry on.

    I have over 500 hrs post ICO, and in my some what limited experience the balls deep hab is always a risk but can work if your armor out matches theirs. You have to take out the enemy armor before establishing the hab. If you weren't there to take out the enemy APC, it probably dies in the cradle. Due to your dedication to the mission, I'll be putting you in for an AAM. Unfortunately, that is all I can do because the LT in logistics is getting a Bronze Star.

  • @galacticdragon9841

    I was in this game on the other team, and it was such a mess for us towards the end of the game. We stalled out on the attack then ya'll got that hab right behind Chernikov when we got rid of your northern attack, so half ya'lls team spawned right on Chernikov and absolutely fucked us up with only I think half my squad on the defense and the rest of our team on the attack, resulting in a CLEAN sweep. I learned a lot that game, mainly that if you are sitting on the defense, it is a good idea to go around scouting to find enemy habs early, and to always have at least one full squad on defense. Also another thing is, take other squad leaders seriously, squad leaders started arguing once we lost Chernikov cause most of the team didn't want to listen to the squad that was mainly attacking barracks for the game.

    As an experienced backline SL, for 4 man SQ I'd always bring a medic, rifleman and 1 HAT/LAT. Its very risky to go out without a medic

    • @HaebyungDance
      @HaebyungDance 8 дней назад

      Yeah my choice to forgo a medic was a spicy one, but i rarely feel like a single LAT can do much so that was why I opted to bring two and play around the lack of a medic.

    • @gase93
      @gase93 8 дней назад

      @@HaebyungDance as a small unit we aim to disrupt enemy spawns and logistics. (Only if we have a HAT , we would actively ambush enemy armor as a secondary objective.) Now, if we only have a LAT we use it defensively : For logi / transport / light ones with exposed gunners - shoot the crew (only destroy it if you have spare ammo for the AT or you sense both teams are close in terms of tickets) Light ones with turrets: destroy them with 2 AT shots (aim for the engine block) APCs/IFVs - hide or focus on their turret so they need to leave the area. Tanks - you cannot kill them. Hide or aim for the tracks if nearby Armor can deal with them (communicate with your friendly MBT/IFV in advance ). The medic keeps the squad alive and fighting longer behind enemy lines, with short supplies and over numbered. (That's at least what I learnt by testing different loadouts)

      @@gase93 If the Squad is ever maneuvering a medic will be required based on the increased risk of the movement, the stationary defender has the advantage the majority of the time. Medics are less necessary if the squad is defending especially in other gamemodes(Invasion/Insurgency). If the squad is attacking a Hab/Radio/Obj/Enemy vic a medic should be required even down to a 2 man squad. If you are getting extremely sweaty the squad would not be attacking without transportation/mortar cover. This ensures you can have smoke for an advance, mortars to kill crippled enemy vics and the speed/ammo of the transportation source. My favorite transport being anything that can carry 600 ammo and doesnt require the crewman kit (open top Tigr/APC).

    9:15 technically not true. This only 100% works for HABs but defenses stay up even when the radio is taken down. I know it’s rare and nitpicky but it still happens sometimes, especially when the enemy is superfobbing a point
