Cabin Fever Challenge 2024 - Division 1
My entry for Division 1 - Vintage Semi-Auto for the 2024 Cabin Fever Challenge. Running it for a fourth year in a row using a Chinese SKS. Although this isn't my best run, I still managed to get my second best score using this rifle over the last 4 years. Unfortunately I failed to record any B-Roll to do a silly cold-open like on my other 3 entries this year

      Off a bench and with better tailored ammunition, it can definitely do better. The limit is the operator and the iron sights for sure. A good shooter and ammunition can expect to get around 2" groups at 100 yards at best

    • @DMPinBC
      @DMPinBC 5 месяцев назад

      5 rounds per position and a mandatory reload between positions are the rules of the competition. But also, yes, in Canada all centerfire semi-auto rifles and shotguns must be "permanently modified" to only hold 5 rounds. The SKS' in Canada all have a blocker either welded or riveted to the bottom of the magazine well

    I always thoroughly enjoy your videos. The details! And really, good form and good speed with a bullpup w/mags stuffed in your pockets! Hold up, I just re-watched.... those are double ended mags! That must be a Canadian thing! How insane! What a way to manage speedy reloads with a 5 round cap limit. I was about to recommend a surplus chest rig from Varusteleka, but I couldn't remember seeing you pull 3 mags out of your pockets. We run 30/40 round mags at our 2-3 gun events here in Alaska. You would look insane trying to pull something like that here. That was great to see. I was also pretty surprised to see you (a Canadian) rocking the Keltec RDB. We kind of consider them to be, oh... You have the AR guys and the AK guys and over in the corner you have the crazy guy rocking the keltec rifle. Awesome!

    • @DMPinBC

      Thanks for the comments on the video. Quick Canadian law summary: 3 types of firearms classes are non-restricted (can go anywhere), Restricted (think kinda like your SBR class and can only be used at the range), and prohibited (unfortunately all AKs and AR15s now). RDB falls in the non Restricted category. And yes, the double ended mags are designed and manufactured in Canada specifically because of magazine restrictions

It had arrived already looped back on itself, and I didn't know that I could thread the hook through the buckle like you showed, in order to undo it. So what I had done was tied a Lark's Head knot with the looped end of the sling onto the SVD butt stock post. But of course I thought I could figure it out on my own, so I ignored her. 😅 So this morning, I finally decided to take her advice, and voilà, your video appeared and explained it so clearly. 🙏 Of course, I had to tell her she was right, as usual. All categories except the rimfire category are shot at 100 yards (or 100 meters)

      Always gotta try something new when putting the video together. Options for 1/2 second long sound effects were a little limited lol

    I love the SKS. My 51' is named "Dedushka" (Grampa) Load it up with the most corrosive, salt primer filled, barrel eating dirty 76.2X39 you can find and poke some holes in paper.

      People give them a back rap, but they are pretty good rifles. I miss the old days of $179 crates of corrosive ammo

      You certainly shorted yourself. That there is 13 hits. The rules say breaking the line counts as a scoring hit and the one at the top breaks the line. 13 hits with an SKS has to be some kind of record with the cabin fever challenge. Awesome run!

      Thanks for the comment about liking my videos. I quite enjoy stitching them together. As far as hits, through the spotting scope it looks like it breaks the line, but looking close at the target its outside the black by a mm/16th" or so. The run is still an improvement over previous years so I'm happy with the results

      If you get that sling wrapped around your left arm, the "hasty sling" was allowed, you could cut 20-30 seconds off your time pretty easily and increase your accuracy a bit. By pulling it into your shoulder pocket smartly and leaving it there, running the bolt is much easier and faster and gets you back on target much quicker. You look to be a good shot there, but I think you could run that rifle quite professionally with some sling know-how. I see you dropping the rifle out of your shoulder pocket to run the bolt, then you have to put it back, put your cheek back in place and re-sight the target every time. I bet you could put 10 hits on target in 90 seconds with the same result after practicing the hasty sling for 30 mins. Your video was really quite excellent.

      If you want, you can see me demonstrate good use of the hasty sling in my 2023 submission with my 1903a3. Look close at my left arm and you will see the sling wrapped up tight. The bolt stroke is a bit long for my cheek weld, so I have to move my face when I run the bolt, but the rifle stays put. I think the action on your beautiful SMLE is shorter and its action really lends itself to speed, but you need to lock that rifle up tight to get the most out of it. You shot remarkable well for not using a sling at all. I think you could be pretty darn great if you mastered the hasty sling.

      Thanks on all fronts. The rifle is a restore job from a few winters ago... they can be cold and sucky here so I quite enjoyed the project. As far as using a hasty sling shooting position, it is definitely on my radar as something to practice as I've never tried it before. I'll look back at your video and others before I head out next time with this rifle and see what I can learn
