We all know that for some neurodivergent writers if we don't see it, it doesn't exist. Scrivener is my go-to software for novel writing and sometimes screenwriting. Movie Studio Submissions | Q: What is the best way to find representation for a studio?
Hi! I plan to apply for UCLA extension premed. Are there financial aid or grants for international students?
youtube how dare you hide this from me for an entire year
You don’t need a screenwriting software at all for learning how to write a story. No need to talk about a screenwriting software if story is what you want to talk about. I’m interested in final draft because I collaborate with people, which is mandatory for film production.
The Beat Board is my home. For any comic book writer I would recommend nothing else before Final Draft. I've written screenplays on 11 and 12, I even keep both on different computers. I can plot out and organize an entire collection in just a few hours with Final Draft, eight books at a time.
Could not disagree with this more. Final Draft is a great option for those who are newer to the game. Your screenplay HAS to be formatted properly for it to even have a sliver of a chance of getting read. I agree, FD will not suddenly make you a good/better writer. But it will put you on the same playing field.
For sure, it should be formatted properly for industry reads when you finally get the chance to be read! But rarely do I see new writers have a properly structured story even before getting the industry read (very rare to have it read before you’ve proven your writing works.) Since most software is formatted to the standard screenplay formatting created many years ago, I think my thoughts were to push more learning to write a story first. Then as you build that by investing the money in courses, seminars, ect-you can purchase the software as you evolve. But I completely understand everyone’s position in wanting the software first. It can be motivating!
Good luck on your current work!
Thank you!!! I hope your own writing project is going well. ☺️
@ on draft two now! Hoping this draft will go faster than draft 1 (which took a year 😅)
Whatttt, yay! I hope it is faster for you. I always hope it will be quick, but sadly my third draft-probably more like the actual second draft, cause I did a second draft as an entire rewrite-last year dragged for a whole year. 🥲 But I’m still learning the rewrite process for novels.
@ thank you! I honestly feel like the drafts after draft 1 can be just as challenging as the first draft, because it can go into so many directions. Good luck on your writing 😊
💯Soooo much work after the first draft. Haha Good luck on yours too and happy writing!
i wish i had this all when i was younger. i have been a writer for years but now transitioning into entertainment and i feel overwhelmed. i love your channel! you're doing it!
I’m honestly blown away by how much things have changed over the years! Yay for reaching into entertainment. I’m glad so much of it is becoming demystified in recent years, although slowly. I’m glad I could talk about my journey here. Thanks so much for always being so supportive when I put out my videos!! 😄
Remember how Indiana Jones said he hated snakes in the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost ArK? We knew a horrifying snake scene would be coming at some point! After your video, I'm inspired to go back and drop in a few more set ups just because they are so fun! I think sets ups are often best created when they are reverse-engineered. You need something to happen at the midpoint or the end, so you go back 20-plus pages and sneakily plant it so it all seems organic. I think we are all becoming extra savvy TV and movie watchers, though, because we are tuned to catch all the set ups. But the challenge for writers is to deliver fresh surprises in our pay offs. I immediately think of the movie The Sixth Sense, because you realize the viewer was being set up the whole time and didn't know it until the very end. And that is one of the reasons that ending was super satisfying! It was one big pay off.
How could I forget that Indy scene!! Iconic.
The software doesn’t teach you to write, but it does teach you how to use the software and familiarise yourself with it. Though people get caught up on upgrading.
Yes, exactly, it doesn't! My hope is that the new writers I mention in the video stop worrying about pricey industry software studios use for running the production and focus on storytelling. I've read tons of scripts where the issue is not enough time/money/focus spent on learning and education to tell a good story. 🤓
@@PikaLeeMedia I finally upgraded from final draft 8, to final draft 13 for a massive $69.99. had 30% off. I only upgraded for ease and compatibility, but I really didn't need to. not going to use the emoji in scripts, well I don't use many of the features I could use, but I am use to the software and that price is worth it for me. so long as the product works, that is all that matters. I have never used the free versions of software, but I am sure they are good (have heard a lot of good things about some free software). I just jumped on fd, because it is "standard" and well the shortcut keys make lots of sense when writing.
Great video!!
Thank you for this. Very useful. Much appreciated.
But surely you should watch it as the audience, if you are writing a story, that is who you should appeal to?
There’s absolutely a time where we should watch as an audience, although I believe we’re already always watching as an audience subconsciously! 😄 Since it’s very natural for everyone to watch as an audience my goal was to learn to watch as a writer. I think studying story structure and the flow of scenes doesn’t always come natural for some writers (like it didn’t for me. 😅) I think I would place audience appeal lower in my process because it depends on so many factors of what you’re writing genre-wise, who picks up your movie, the budget you get, and inevitably rewrites will happen to adjust for all of it too.
This is a solid video, though I was expecting less general theory and more direct prompting examples and outputs, and specific use cases or tweaking outputs with further prompting. Also this is pretty much exactly how I use ChatGPT. But I do more than just plotting. I use it with world building and character design as well.
This is actually a good way to use AI. I think it would be a good idea to develop the full story, and a way to get through the outlining or planning phase quicker and get to the actual writing/drafting phase. Unfortunately, most people who use AI won’t just use it to develop the story, and will instead try to use it to write the whole story, which luckily AI isn’t good at yet.
Yeah I agree. There are such big pros and cons to AI exploding in the last few years and sadly many will take advantage as tech progresses. They absolutely need to implement boundaries and policies to prevent executives from diminishing the value behind those who actually work ethically on their craft. 😓 I do hope that on the flip side, others can advance from the tool. 😌
I've used chat gbt for similar things. The places I've used it the most for helping me search for good strong verbs and nouns, so I'm not stuck using the same 10 throughout the first draft. I think people should be more curious about evolving technology, see what it can do instead believing it's all bad. The AI itself only spits out what you give it, the most hyper focused the prompt you give it, the better the results it can give. People kind of assume it will write a whole manuscript when asking it for anything writing related and that's not the whole truth.
I agree with all of your points! Especially, the more specific, the better. It’s a learning curve for me to be specific, so it’s a great exercise for me. I really love the idea of asking for verbs and noun alternates to keep a good balance/cut overuse. Amazing tip!!
"Body doubling" AKA parallel play
I didn't realize it, but very similar!!
Hello Pika, thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to decide if I should do this class. Thank you for the info... Question: Do you get to pick your instructor or you just get who you get?
Yes, absolutely you can pick your own instructor! I do have a mini video up about I usually go about picking mine. But the quick of it is, instructors will be listed before you add the class to your cart and you can click on the instructors name to see a quick bio about them and sometimes their syllabus is attached as a preview of the course you’re selecting.
@@PikaLeeMedia Thank you so much for responding. That's good to know. It's hard to pick where to goto school. It's a lot of money as you know and you want to pick the best place. I will check out your other videos. Keep up the great work and keep writing!
Oh yes, the more info the better when it comes to writing courses. I hope you find the right fit 🤞🙌 Happy writing!!
Hi Pika Lee! I recently discovered your channel on a deep dive hyper focus that I’m currently on about screen writing! Want to learn as much as I can about how film writers and makers make a real relatable and impactful story come to life with super MESSY and real characters and maybe someday do that. Can you do a video on your journey as a film maker?
Thanks for these videos! If the genre we like has lots of characters and intersecting story lines that makes one big story line (Bullet Train, Crash, Game of Thrones, etc), how do you stay focused on the “key story points” while also noting how the individual stories craft the main story? Is it better to start with simpler plots and build up to that?
Ensemble stories can be complex and take a lot of prep work. Ultimately, an ensemble is brought together by one common thing they want. The easiest way to make it as neat as possible is by outlining each individual storyline to the 3-act structure beats/key points so they are consistent journeys. Then you can weave them together and find ways to let them cross paths to help or harm each other from getting to their common goal. If you’re beginning your writing journey, learn to balance two stories first. The traditional A story (main plot) and a B story (shorter side character’s story or a romantic story occurring with the plot) to start! Then, when you’re confident you have that down you can add more characters.
Thank you for your videos! I have always loved analyzing and dissecting movies and TV shows and am just now discovering what screen writing is. Your channel is such an excellent way for me to get to take practical steps and explore this new now-hobby and MAYBE/someday-career-if-I-can-stay-focused. Have a great day =)
How exciting! Welcome and have so much fun with the process. 🙌
journaling interresting...
Hi Pika, I just binge-watched about 20 of your videos. Great stuff!
I appreciate that so much!!!
Wenn ich diesen Unsinn neurodivergent schon höre. Was solls denn sein? Leseschwäche? Rechenschwäche oder wieder Adhs? Oder irgendetwas anderes worunter auf einmal jeder 'leidet', weil es gerade 'in' ist?
Mine is giving me the suggestions but there are no colored underlines in the document. Hmmm...
Oh no! I checked into it, it seems like that function has a few limitations with phones and maybe tablets, if you use those. 😅 What program are you using Grammarly desktop with (Scrivener or Word)? Also, when clicking into the page, if the little G icon has a number it’ll take time to load the color lines. If the logo doesn’t have a number and after loading gives you an emoji, it hasn’t found anything.
Thank you, Pika, for the awesome tips! I just subscribed! I'm always wavering between writing a romantic screenplay vs. writing a romance novel. I love both forms-and each for different reasons. When writing a Hallmark movie, how important do you think the geographical area you choose as the setting is? I wonder if people choose to watch a Hallmark movie sometimes because they are also attracted to the specific setting and want to see it depicted? I'll often do this when choosing books, but I'm disappointed when there really isn't much very specific about that area. It's just a marketing backdrop for the cover. Likely many Hallmark movies are set in fictionalized places. Just curious if you thought about this...
I love that, I go between both, also. Hallmark absolutely loves fictionalized small towns the most, even when they mention the state. Geographically, for movies, I have noticed that it’s only important if the story needs the location as an exotic plot device. Which audiences WILL notice if it seems too far off culturally and scenically. I have thought about it, but mostly on a production level. Production-wise: they’re lower budget films, so the less specific the location, the easier it is to film in a state or country with tax breaks and weather that cooperates. For the audience: I don't think they mind a quick feel-good book capitalizing on small-town feels, without specifying anything. It might add liberation for the audience/reader to feel like this town is more magical and unique than a real town.
Excellent advice! Now-If only I had the attention span to find out what it you said! 😂 😭 💀
x1.5 speed? 😆 Not full-proof but I listen to audiobooks that way. Cliff Notes if you still need them: - Body-Doubling (work with someone else, no talking--just working on your own projects together) - Music stimulation (8-D music, write with me videos w/ lo-fi, custom writing project playlists) - Coffee Shops (introvert body doubling) - Journaling/free-writing for your Inner Artist (to get work out any emotional blocks) - Schedule writing sessions to build the habit, also schedule your writing projects through the year - Outline (remove writer's block by knowing what's next via outlining/remove uncertainty) - Pomodoro timed writing sessions (set a timer for writing sessions and take timed breaks in between) - Writing aids (You can buy story prompt books like Write The Story or Writer's Emergency Pack cards for story help) Happy writing!
hi fellow neurodivergent writer!!! Sooooo excited to find your channel, thank you for being here!!!!
Welcome! 🎉 So glad to meet a fellow neurodivergent writer!!!
I'm writing a script for a tv show it's a murder mystery about a teen girl investigating in the murder of her oldest sister that happened 3 years prior and she has a few friends to help her as well (one of the main boys the show is her love interest) they also do some other crimes fighting on the side I started writing it cause I had a dream about it but i'm taking my time brain storm I have finished the pilot but if it's made into a real show I won't let them do it unless I'm staring in it cause I wrote the main character for me specifically. I'm watching Charmed (original), Walker Texas Ranger (with Chuck Norris not the remakes), Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
Murder mysteries are so fun to write! TV is definitely a fun format to write in. I would follow the career of Brit Marling. She writes drama mysteries and built a name for herself as an actress too. Which gave her the power to star in her own writing. Charmed was my favorite!! I also watched Walker Texas Ranger and Buffy, really great shows.
Also some instructors post their syllabus publicly which is cool!
Yes! So glad you mentioned that!! 🙌 I’ve used this feature and it’s really helpful that they do that.
What a Lovely Actress. I like the direction you went with this. It's a simple, yet elegant plot device made exceptionally powerful due to the conviction with which the role was presented. & There's a subtle intensity that builds as the revelatory scenes progress and lead to the story's conclusion. The pacing is also good. All-around great performances on the part of both actors. Bravo ma'am 👏
Very solid advice ma'am. But unfortunately there are many gimmicky books available for purchase now with catchy titles such as " How to Write a Screenplay that Sells in 30 Days" or something similar. Many get sold on the idea that one can read a 64 pg. book on screen or novel writing and successfully replicate the results of those who've spent literal years studying up on the topic and (perhaps even more importantly) practicing at it. Yours is by far the most practical advice I've seen in a while. Learn the Basics, Practice, seek peer review. One could also add: Be open/receptive towards *constructive criticism, and open-minded enough to at least try or consider taking it. (if it resonates with you.) Good input. Ill be sure to check out more of your work.
My best friend sent a story off to Paramount as an idea for a Star Trek movie. He didn't copyright it. They told him they could use the story and a couple years later Star Trek generations came out and it was the exact story that he had written. How do I know cuz I'm the one that went over the book before he sent it off and told him that he needed to copyright it to be safe and he didn't believe me.
Is there any alternative for the Pomodoro method for those of us with jobs and other commitments? In reality, I'll find I may have between 2 and 10 chances to write in any given 6 month period, often ranging for 2 minutes (most common) to 30 minutes (if I'm really, really lucky), and none of those moments are scheduled. They all depend on other people leaving me alone, and I have no control over other people's schedules - it happens when it happens - there is no way to plan for them. I also have to get the full chapter/multiple full chapters done in that time or else I'll forget where I was going with it. Pomodoro seems to rely on specific, planned periods of time, though, and the assumption is made that we can plan our own schedules around the writing, as if no one works on call or has 'flexible hours' or gets called in to cover for people calling out sick all the time.
There was a reverse of this I’ve heard some people will do which is just time tracking. You can use a stopwatch on your phone and instead of losing the flow you’d stop when you’re done and track that session time in your notes. Pomodoro doesn’t need to be planned and often I run one using my countdown on my phone at work for ten minutes or fifteen during lunch. It mostly helps with my time blindness. I know sometimes I don’t have time during lunch so I work around my 50 hr workweek by going into work earlier to write or staying later if I know at home I might be distracted. Something my friends do is after they finish writing, they make a quick prose note/summary of what is going to happen next so they don’t lose it if they come back way later. I do this myself if I’m deviating a bit from my outline. A few also use voice notes and attach it to the document so you can find it later. Hope you find something that works for you! 🙌
@@PikaLeeMedia Time tracking might work, though going to work for some quiet time won't work (I work in a grocery store, so it's constant customer questions, even off the clock, plus I write on my PC at home). Taking summary notes isn't going to work, as I stop writing due to the distraction and it just gets worse if I don't just minimize/close the window - there's barely time to hit Ctrl-S to quick save (I've even hard to stop mid-word before) and all to avoid the multi-hour argument about whether I should even be writing. But the time tracking does sound like it'll work (timer on a whole separate device), so thank you!
I can relate, my entire family is neurospicy, and while my son was aged 2-8 I had very little peace of mind. Even watching a show I would be able to see that a demand was made of me roughly every one and a half minutes. For me, control over my time has come by constantly challenging my belief that I must jump at every request, and starting to defend half-hour slots. When interrupted responding with can it wait until [whenever the timer expires]? Hope this is some help.
I'm so glad I found your video. I've been struggling with this issue since I grew up raised as Caucasian but recently found out that's not entirely true. My father kept our full heritage a secret from everyone since we passed as white and he's got vehement hang ups (not sure why as he refuses to say). I'm now coming to terms with this reveal while trying to undo the disconnect from within. Thank you for your transparency and sharing your insight 💕 much appreciated 😊
Amazing!!! Thanks so much for sharing! I really admire that you’re taking the journey to know your family history and understand where the people you love came from. It might be difficult processing that history, but it definitely brings a closer connection to heritage and hopefully to your dad. 💗
1:25 for neurodivergent viewers.
You’re the goat
Well mam i write scripts for plays. So I've this question in my mind like i need a platform or a way to make my script reach the production. Is there any way for me to reach my story to someone who trusts beginners and how to do it
It all about experience and remember that entertainment is a business, which is why beginners aren't handed over keys to their own production without proof of skill. Try to create your own smaller pieces on a budget, or work with bigger productions to gain the experience of working on something well-known (even if its just lending a hand you'll learn the business.) That builds a trusted portfolio and skills. 😄
Thanks for this. I've written several scripts (two of which were placed) but find it hard to outline anything... I delve into the story. I know I should outline but my brain just doesn't let me. I am trying some different outlining methods now but not without challenge. Usually, what I do is, I'll watch a show similar to the genre I'm writing about and then follow those beats with my story. It's very visual but for me, it works.
Congrats on placing!! I know outlining wasn’t my thing at the beginning either because when I would try, I would give up and just start writing the script. 🤪 Then I started small, just a quick logline before I started writing. Then just the major beats. Now I’m fully beat by beat of the whole script because UCLA made us outline. It took me years to finally mold it to the way my brain works haha. Maybe since you’re visual you can try creating AI images of the major beat scenes and add it to an outline doc with a quick sentence about the beat? Could be fun but time consuming tho. 😅
this is SO helpful. i realized last year that i want to do screenwriting, so ive been trying to build more consistent habits to get into it and build a portfolio. for me, something that helps my writers block a lot is watching a movie and analyzing it, but for the longest time i thought i was just "being lazy" but it really is great for getting me to think about my story structures and how to get through writing character arcs
Welcome to screenwriting!! It really does help internalize the structure when you watch it. It’s my favorite thing to do before or after I read the script! I try to pinpoint beginning and ends of the acts and any major beats and I’ve started teaching my family story by pointing it out too. It becomes a fun game.🤭
@@PikaLeeMedia thank you so much!! yesss i've gotten my writer friends to analyze movie beats with me and i think its helping us all improve our craft a lot!
@pop-punkreptile5827 🥳
You have the same brain that I do! At least I know I'm onto something. 2k/100k words at the moment and I ended up here, distracted. xD
Yay for the same brains! I have never tackled a 100K project before, so I am rooting for you! I have friends who write Sci-Fi and Epic Fantasy primarily and I admire the heck out of them for it.
goodjob !!!!
same
I do a lot of the same things. Didn't know I'm neurodivergent until last year
It’s incredible how we unconsciously do these little things to help ourselves write or create art! It’s really great to know what makes us tick. 😁
Wonderful Pika, so heartfelt. I'm an aspiring writer and your advice is so encouraging. I've subscribed. Thank you.
Thanks so much for subscribing!! Welcome and I wish you so much luck on your writing journey! 💫😄
I bought it as a student on discount and I think that's the best way until you're a paid professional, otherwise use free tools
We should listen to you because ….. ? You’ve sold how many scripts?
I love Final Draft. And I don't know anyone who has ever said you NEED Final Draft in order to write well. It also happens to save a ton of time to have an industry-standard software.
The term "whitewashing" is really insensitive, even racist. I hope you do some soul searching and find a better way to talk about this issue.
Thanks for your comment! I did much soul searching previous to releasing this video with thoughts of using this term. It is still quite frequently used by the industry trades although becoming less common with the introduction in recent years of Diversity and Inclusion departments to solve this problem. The departments were created because audiences wanted more diversity away from a specifically white stories or only using white actors. I made the choice to use the term because of its definition as set by Miriam Webster, and the history that Hollywood in America has with this term: “to alter (something) in a way that favors, features, or caters to white people a: to portray (the past) in a way that increases the prominence, relevance, or impact of white people and minimizes or misrepresents that of nonwhite people.” I understand many may not like the term or find it taboo because it has negativity attached to it. This is why I think we should talk about it. But I do think that people with objective minds will understand the context I used to explain why I wrote stories the way I did influences from growing up watching and working in American Cinema. As well as gain perspective on their own writing. 💞
@@PikaLeeMedia Well you wouldn't say "blackwashing" or "yellowwashing" or "colorwashing" would you? Would you say we're gonna get it all colored up in there? So what's the difference? Racism is racism. I don't care what it says in some dictionary.
The music, the tone was all great!!!!
Thank you!! 😄
I loved this take, love the transparency and the creative growth that'll come from it! I watch any and everything but I can say when I see a poc in a show or movie, it does make it more interesting to me!
Thank youuuu!! I learned so much from those old Hollywood movies and their actors 💕 YES! I love reminding myself I have the option to bring some POC into a story to see what that story looks like.
