We don’t have such luxury in these parts, you have a captain who drives, baits, ties, nets, while dancing around 5-6 other passengers in a 22 foot tin can while taking extreme care to ensure rods don’t get snapped, people don’t fall in, or take a roe hook to the cry ball.

@@-fishhub-billydriessen1627 Is it customary to tip the Captain on a small boat salmon trip? If it is I would give a giant tip---NJ coast we tip the mate who is doing all the work on a party boat.

Honestly the times have changed so much that nothing is really “customary,” anymore and while it’s always appreciated I’d say it really just varies depending on the clientele you cater to. As shown in the video above, I don’t run a deckhand so from dark to dark it’s a constant juggle and when you have 6 rods fishing it’s not for the faint of heart. When someone hooks up you have to ensure that the other 5 sticks get reeled in safely without anyone losing an eye or letting one of my dogs eat a Pautzke’s roe ball with a hook in it lol. All of that while still driving the boat, keeping the fish out of the prop, and standing on point with the net at the ready. I’m truly fortunate to say that my clientele base is comprised mostly of return customers so they know the drill and are usually quite generous with the tips. There aren’t a large number of 6 pack charters out there who make a large enough take home dollar amount to justify sending a deckhand to get licensed legally and then place him or her on payroll. It simply doesn’t have enough benefit to justify the means so the most common scenario is bringing aboard a “volunteer.” Some captains will announce that the only reason the helper is even there is solely to assist them and although he isn’t an employee he does work hard for tips. Other capts will set up a couple tip boxes throughout the boat along with a sign that says the exact same thing and also reassures them that ALL tips are for the deckhelper alone and are not shared with the captain. Most of the time the captain will offer the DH a daily flat rate so that everyone gets paid no matter what. Even if the fishing was poor they’d still clear $100 a day but if their daily tip amount exceeds that $100 then the boat doesn’t pay them a dime and they take home theirs tip money for the day.

Be a luxury to have one

This specific location is between Chico and Corning but you have a very wide variety of potential options at your disposal. On the Sacramento River you will find the best salmon fishing between Colusa and the Barge Hole in Balls Ferry. There are so many potential options that it becomes difficult for many people to not fall down the rabbit hole and get lost while attempting to bounce between 30 various techniques. Pick a stretch of river, pick the style of fishing you wish to try, and stick with it all day. If you do not have boat access it becomes an entirely different issue because it’s exceedingly difficult to do on the Sac. If you are bank fishing then I urge you to hit the Thermolito Outlet Hole on the feather river and reach out to Joe Green of Hammerdown for pointers. Best of luck

Heavy Matters it will definitely be a hard one for me to top on the west coast! I have faith and a little confidence that it can be done though. I have DEFINITELY seen bigger, but they didn’t get that big for no reason, those ones are hard to trick!
