question: is there any reason you are not connecting mils plates with technical pins is it because of the price or is it just for the video?
I personally like them very much but I get the point
AFOL TV is great! Hope your channel gets going again 😊
You’re having some… road rage 😂
I like having the thicker raised, more sturdy bases for buildings, and because of that you need something to compensate the roads, completely agree with you on what you've done! mils was put in place to standardize for conventions, if you can divide everything into 32 stud base plates, then you can standardize tables, layouts, plans etc etc for multiple designers to come in, but as long as you plan around it, even then WHO CARES. you do you! and it looks awesome.
I am with you. I hate those things too. I'm not going to activity seek MILS plates. I've been using baseplates and technic parts to make floating shelves and the stackable baseplates from Strictly Bricks to make them stack up. It's a work in progress. Honestly I don't know what LEGO was thinking designing a new road system without curves. It's totally inferior. L.A.M.E.
Update?
I opted to remain with Classic baseplates… Albeit modified.
Thanks for the great video. I completely agree that there is no need to have 32 x 32 roads. I started simply putting the new road plates on 16 *16 base plates. However I did want to be able to connect to my mils buildings with technic pins so I have changed to the quite rare but findable 18 * 16 base plates, this gives me 1 stud width each side of the new road plate to incorporate technic bricks and a curb between pavement and road.
I did my mils differently. No sidewalk. The sidewalk on the Modular’s are enough. So I gained a lot of space by doing this
I agree 100%. Cannot stand those roads.
I like to put my train tracks in my roads and it looks stunning! This wouldn't be possible with my old road plates
9:45 - "how do you make a curve? now, I want a curve. I don't want to have to have 90 degree turns everywhere in my city." I completely agree! The new road would be great if they somehow implemented curve sections too. It's fine for a lot of US style cities because they use a lot of grid layout. It's way more advanced to make your own custom curves as isn't so straight forward and the results aren't always the greatest.
You should be embarrassed getting this worked up and angry over a toy lol. If this makes you that upset over something that is made specifically made to be enjoyed, perhaps you should step back and take a look at the bigger picture. I've watched a few of your videos and you just seem like an angry and unhappy person in general.
I agree! I “hate” MILS. Like you I don’t hate hate them really or those that use them. They offer some cool abilities, however, I find the expense of using them in a very large city (such as I used to have) is not justified and you can figure out other creative ways to do the same things with just baseplates and selective layering, and “breaking” the baseplates into manageable “chunks” so that you can move and disconnect them. I think brick or tile made roads look nicer and more smooth than the new road plates. Now if one is willing to use cheap off-brand bricks and baseplates for their MILS then it gets much more economical. But I’d rather sink my money into sets and bricks/plates and tiles that will be used and seen. Again, I think they are great but, it’s all about one’s use case and wallet and pace and priorities. To MILS or not? It’s really just up to the person because after all, isn’t LEGO about just having fun building in however one wants to build. 😀 Good video.
Kids; this is why you drink and record your yt vids.. Views!
i mean, if you want to limit yourself then sure. to me, i love the freedom that MILS grants you cant have depth without mils, you cant have lakes, rivers, sidewalks, gutters, bike lanes, etc. MILS grants the ability to give your city REAL detail.
I like it a lot!
Finally, someone with the same opinion as me! Since I'm European (Portuguese), I'm used to small sidewalks, so these new MILS roads don't make any sense to me. This final option, using just the modular buildings sidewalks look way more realistic to me! Thank you for the demonstration. I love the end result.😊
Thank you for the comment! It's very hard to have to give up so much space for things that don't really need it! A city functions just fine without 20000 studs worth of sidewalk!! 🤣🤣 😊
These look awesome! Where do you get your buildings and ewok village? Thanks for sharing
Honestly I was always wondering why Mils have so much sidewalk. That's main reason why I hate baseplates (and the fact that baseplates as they are are very restrictive of a piece)
Thing is buy a kid 2 of the city sets, the shopping street and the house and buy the kid 2 sets of the new road plates and the kid has infinite possibilities to combine everything. Look at the city center and the shopping street builds both are modular already. With each building being a seperate unit. Kids can do everything with the new system. While the old would be on 2/3 base plates and you had to buy multiple packs of road plates to give some length of road. Now everything is smaller but gives more space and possibilities. And honestly I don't give a damn about adult collectors in this regard. This new system is genius for little children. Perhaps they should add a set with a new curve piece. Easy to make for Lego. Then it's done.
I also don't like the 32x32 road mils design with the new plates and modulars for the same reasons. The additional sidewalk feels too wide when the modulars already have their own sidewalks. I'm still considering if I want to adopt the mils system, but have been thinking of using 16x32 plates for the roads (with maybe 32x32 for intersections and T junctions). With the T junction, I would probably place the road at the edge. Alternatively, I would have it so you could attach the roads in the middle, not just at the ends, so you could join the roads as needed.
What happened, did you find a new hobby? You haven't posted anything in months.
Hey! No way - no new hobby for me.. life and family stuff just really got crazy for me and made videos really hard to get done - but I should be back in 2023 as things are definitely calming down! I definitely miss it! So for sure stay tuned!
@@mybricksandme6152 Okay, I'll see you soon
Yes! Narrower streets look more pedestrian friendly. Love it!❤
Mils were for the following: 1. The point of them was to hide lighting/wires 2. Connect the plates if moving around a lot 3. The older sets didnt connect and plates would fall off easy moving them 4. Finally make things "Realistic" with water/lakes If your not doing any of these then it seems its not for you and thats ok.
I haven't seen this idea of make a type of Mills plate with old road plate and add some bricks and some plates and some tiles.
maybe its just me but: this mils road seems to represent the North American Style of road, aka big road with gray sidewalk. Euro roads are smaller than this sometimes. Over all I feel one should just make custom roads, why not? its lego!
Fully agree. Maybe it's because the mini-city I'm doing for my daughter is only 2x6 buildplates, but the idea of dedicating a full 32 studs of width for a road seemed crazy to me, especially when the modulars already have pavement areas on them (not that I can fit modulars in our set up, we're living that Creator 3-in-1 life)
You make alot a great points, but is there any way to use the old roads? And how do you get a curved road?
Hey Phil! Thanks for watching! Yup. I figured out a way to use them basically I built the sidewalks up to be the height of the mils while the roads stayed the same. With the curved roads though, it's a little tricky, a lot of triangular plates get used to make the curve. If you check out the next video I believe you can see what I came up with! Have a great day! 😊
That is some haul. Some amazing sets. That will keep you busy for sure. Hope you are doing well Gina 👍👍👍😊
Thanks! Yea, most definitely will keep me super busy - and I'm still waiting for stuff to come in the mail 🙃 thanks for watching!
The wallet will certainly be crying for sure. Mind you it’s no good going to work and not enjoying the fruits of labour and as my dad always says “you can’t take your money with you when you’re gone”. It looks like you have lots of building to do there Gina and hope you enjoy them 😀👍
Very very true! Might as well have fun with it! No sense working hard for nothin! Have a great day Simon! 😊😊
Nice! That is a heck of a Haul!
Thanks Raven! Just wait for part 2!!! 😌 soggy sopping tear soaked wallet coming up! But a happy LEGO builder 👍🏻😎
Great little Haul , That sanctum 😲 just wow , having an army of bath tubs lol can't wait too see that 👀 , Put Batman in a bathtub I thing that would be hilarious
Thanks!!! - OMG that would be so great! Super Hero Bathtub Army!!!!! :) I have 2 more on their way - and now they are sold out! I'll find more though! thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed!
@@mybricksandme6152 your very welcome, yes Superhero Tub army 😆
The reasons why mils is so common, is because 1. Very sturdy and strong base 2. Has lots of depth which allows lots of details like lower extensions of ground like ponds and swimming pools, underground basements etc. and 3. Personally I find mils plates fun to build.
I like the setup without the sidewalks better because i love a very dense city. Also i don't think you need the white stripes on the side
Add sans
I agree, thank you for sharing!
I agree. I do appreciate what they did, and I think they did a good job of it. I know there are builders who totally love that entire new system, but I do not. I'm a hobby builder, not a collector or a lego city builder with a whole room full of legos. I don't want to have to invest all my time and money into building a road. I'd rather make buildings. I just want to put a couple of road base plates down next to a green or tan baseplate and start making stuff. I don't want to configure the road, and I notice the road is thicker than a regular base plate, so I'd have to switch over how I make stuff. I don't want to do that! I think Lego should keep both options available since people have different preferences.
Honestly agree those sidewalks ONLY work with builds that don't already have sidewalks lol
I'm one of the guys buying into the whole new system you have there. Mainly because it has been a dream to wire everything up to light up my city AND, with the extended sidewalks iv been adding parking spaces, bus stops, etc. I've been able to pack in and make areas looks far more dense and packed with lego then ever before
That's awesome! I definitely agree that with LEGO, the more packed and full it is, the better it looks! I want to light my city up too, but that's an entire new project that will definitely take some pre planning! 😊 thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed! Happy Building!
Looks like you got some awesome stuff! Thumbs up from another LEGO RUclipsr! 👍
Heyyy!!! I know you 😉 thanks for watchin! I definitely got so.e good stuff - can't wait for that August wave to hit tho! So much more great stuff coming! 🙌
I'm envious of the space you have.
Thanks! I know I'm very lucky with all my space! But you always could use more room! Thanks for watching 😊
Love the forest area, I'm building a small one bit by bit. Your room is great.
Thank you so much!! Yes, but by bit is the way to go, you can really get so many details in the slower you go and the more inspired you get! Happy Building! Glad you enjoyed! 😊
