Edit My Photo - January 2023
Polona was the winner of the December 2022 Edit My Photo challenge in the Unleashed Education community.
As the winner of the challenge, Polona submitted an image of a gorgeous Toller posing on what looks like a derelict boat, complete with colours and textures galore! Unfortunately though, the flat, even lighting doesn’t bring out all those lovely textures as well as harsher light would, so we have to work hard in the edit, to do the scene justice.
In the edit, we’ll be doing minimal adjustments in Lightroom and moving quickly on to Photoshop, where I’ll use blending modes on multiple layers to boost the colour and detail. We’ll finish the image off in a rather surprising way to end up wit...

Using Photoshop's Field Blur to Fix an In-Camera Blunder!

Have you ever made the mistake that I did on this shoot? I took my blank plate so I could edit out the owner and doh, I refocussed. The depth of filed doesn't match up, even closely. It's easily done when you've got so much to think about on location with dogs. All is not lost though, In this video I'll show you how you can save the shot without making a hack job of using content aware, generat...

Dear FATHER in heaven......how GLORIOUS IS YOUR CREATION!!!
Excellent! My fave was at 2:44…cute and with a sense of humor, thanks Katie Brockman!😁
2:22 aww that one is my absolute favourite ❤❤❤… cute 🥰 kitty 🐈⬛ ❤ (I’m a cat person) 2:42 although that rat picture is pretty cute 🥰 too
I'm speechless. Superb
So perfect
Magnificent, interesting but not surprising that the dog is so prolific in the images.
Uplifting in every way
Just amazing!
Some of them are so creative ! Love the work of Mattia
Beautiful and inspiring!
Wow! They are all absolutely amazing. Well done everyone!
Hi Craig, I didn't notice how dirty my sensor was until I created a long exposure/panning shot of a Labradoodle - you are an absolute star 🌟. Thank you so much for sharing this 'quick' fix 😊.
No worries, glad it was helpful!
I am having trouble finding this OPTION button for the intercept option. Please explain. ** Edit to add...I got it! Thank you! This saved my photo!
I have to say watching the demo from Adobe you're using the tool wrong and expecting way too much. Especially with the dog collar. You're not supposed to just do one big swipe and hope it works. It's expected that you're going to work it in pieces and clean up as you go. It's not just one click magic. Still have to learn to use it properly.
Hi Eric. I recorded this when the Remove Tool first came out, and Generative Fill was still in Beta only. I do use it a little differently now. For the collar removal, I would definitely try Generative Fill first as it would definitely give a better result than the Remove Tool. Obviously some clean up is still required on some of these, but that would make the video a little boring!
Thank you. Well explained.🐾🐾
No worries, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks, great idea.🐾🐾
No worries Dave!
Thanks for that Charlotte, much appreciated. Subscribed. 🐾🐾
Glad you found us Dave!
Thank you ,exactly what I was looking for
Great, glad I could help!
i dont have these options just vintage modern B&W and artistic any suggestions
Do you mean you don't have the Camera Matching profiles? What camera body are you shooting with?
thankyou!
I didn't know about picking and rejecting photos until I saw your video. Very helpful. Makes culling images easier, which is something I find hard to do anyway. I need to use the stars better, but I have started using the colour labels like you do.
Glad you found this helpful!
Thank you for this video!
Your masking panel looks different to mine. Mine is in little sections, like the main panels. How do you set it up like yours? I like the uncluttered look. Great lesson as always!
Hmm it may just be a case of resizing the masking panel to be larger, to take up more vertical space?
What a great tutorial! Tools I haven’t used yet! Thanks Craig 😊
Great to hear Angie!
This looks great
Thank you
Very nice, Charlotte, thank you!!!
This is so cool!! I've done tons of running shots with my dog, but not sure I've kept all the frames to try this out. Might have to do a reshoot! Great idea. Thanks.
This is very cool. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
fascinating!
Really interesting. I want to try this now.
Just discovered your site. Loved this video, so helpful, thank you.
That was awesome. Love the bloopers. 😂
😁🤣
I love the bloopers!!!
We thought they might provide some extra entertainment. 🤣
I created a new preset for my camera profile and I do see it in my user present list, but it is not in the Preferences list to allow me to apply globally on import. Any thoughts? TIA
Does this work with cats
Yes 👍
Great hack, thanks!!
Glad you found it helpful!
I did try it, and I am happy with the result. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Yay, great to hear! Thanks for sharing that that worked for you.
the exact video i was looking for, thanks. i was wondering why my photos were coming out desaturated all the time. very stupid lightroom doesnt let you set a default profile by itself.
so helpful! I was afraid of this tool, can't wait to practice!
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Great to hear! No worries.
Great vid! Very informative.
Thanks for your comment, glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
No probs!
I have a question. Why am I now seeing XMP files in my folder when I save my jpegs, but I didn’t have XMP files in my folder before?
If you are just clicking save when you are viewing your jpeg images in Lightroom, that will create an XMP file to go with your jpeg.
I really like this video. Thank you!!
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Fascinating - Is content aware getting close to the line? Could there be some cases that content aware is crossing the line? Wonder what Ansel Adams would say - long way from dodging, burning, .. Thank you.
I guess it depends on how much of a purist you are! I feel pretty confident using content aware becasue it is only using pixels you already have present in the image, where as generative fill is using AI and creating something from nothing. Content aware is also extremely handy whe editing leashes out and for situations like this one where the dog's safety is paramount. As for what Ansel would say, well I guess he would embrace technology available as he did in the darkroom, but we'll never know for sure!
Thanky you very much for your sharing!! 🙌🏼
No probs, hope it was helpful! - Charlotte
Thank you for this video! So helpful. I had set my metadata up in LR years ago and hadn't touched it since. It definitely needed a refresh!
Glad I could provide the nudge to revisit! 😁
I agree, some of the color cast should be there. I always questioned why some tutorials always wanted to eliminate all the color cast when it was actually part of the way lighting naturally works.
Thanks! I never understand eliminating colour casts completely either. Make them less severe and distracting, sure, but eliminating make it look unnatural!
