I was a never trumper. I felt so guilty and had so much fear about going to hell. I knew my Christian friends would treatment as a non believer. It has been a really hard time to reconstruct. I am not sure what I believe anymore. I had profound spiritual experience before becoming a Christian. I know I need to start there. I still don't myself holding to old prejudices about God that I still feel I am going to he'll over

I waa called Marxist, babykiller, and pure evil when ftom the beginning I found Trump abhorrent, voted Democrat ( from the start of my faith, in 1971, to now) and believed in science, social justice, the environment, and practiced indiscriminate love for people whoever they were. I taught some gay kids and gad to run interference for them to protect them from the hateful cruelty from many of their peers. My first vote was cast for Jimmy Carter, loathed Reagan, Bush 1 and 2, then Trump. Ugh. Im a reader, and knew America's sordid true history, so the mythologies in Christian circles about the " divine founding of this nation" and the White Supremacy that undergirds much of the fantasy around this nation's beginninings. The truth is essential if we are going to move forward. I went through a 8 year deconstruction in 1995, but never really bought a lot of the Charismatic practices that were labeled " Faith." That faith in faith, instead of faith in Jesus can quickly become a form of idolotry, because it puts us in seat of control, rather than true trust in God. I've heard it all. I admire your courage, April and your honesty. I still feel like a stranger in the midst of Christian community. I try , but it is all one sided. I cant go along just to get along. At some point, truth needs to be said. Then the fangs come out. It has been a great grief to me to watch God's people march like lemmings over a cliff. Please keep speaking out. God has given you at voice. Hopefully, it will cause some to rethink the dogma and really turn back to the Christ of the scriptures.

It's great to hear these de-conversion stories with people coming to the realization of how hypocritical religion can be. It's sad how delusional people can get with god belief.

It is so weird to grow up as a Catholic, and there was none of this Christian Nationalist stuff. I think the main reason is because of bigotry against Catholics and because we have a pope, so we don't really have an identity attachment to America. So they are not as attached to a political movement in this country. And it's scary to see how these people have made a political movement from people's desire for salvation. It makes me sick and it reminds me of the bible passage when Jesus goes into the temple and flips the tables. And in my Catholic education, we learned about many different worldviews, learning about secular and religious philosophies alike. It was a great experience, and it makes these other denominations so frightening.

Girls, the problem is that christianity breeds extremists. If it did not exist, there would be no extremists either. (ditto Islam) I'm Australian and we have only 43% christians, yet we have a five times lower a crime rate than the highly christian US per each 1000 people. The majority of Australians are not christian and are decent family orientated people who get along well with our fellow human beings and we don't need religion to have what I call, basic moral standards. Also the worlds most secular countries have the lowest crime rates. 🇦🇺🦘

If only that old myth about the paradise the world would be without Christianity had any merit to it whatsoever. 😂 Just a simple example - I'm German and we have the same exact problems with right wing extremism as the USA apart from the fact that it's in no way connected to Christianity but is inherently anti-christian. The problem is not Christianity but nationalism and tribalism. Christianity - when it's corrupted - can be a part of that but if you actually read the gospels - there is no way you can align the message with what's happening in the US with "Christian nationalism".

@@MrSeedi76 I always start with the original story of something, not the "rewrite." So the OT writers tell me that the stars in the sky are only the size of "figs." That's enough for me to throw the entire story in the bin. It shows they were more uneducated about the world than today's kindergarten kids who get given telescopes. Speaking of kids that age, I'm sure I could find a number of them who would not believe that humans were capable of building a structure tall enough to reach heaven. (wherever that may be) Hundreds of examples exist of contradictions and false information in the book. The NT tells me that "slaves must obey their masters," among other jewels of wisdom. Then there is the mishmash of non-aligned information in those gospels. A 100 times more circumstantial evidence exists against the story than would be needed to convict an accused murderer in court. Therefore as I said in my OP comment, it is a story that has been extrapolated to suit the purpose of extremists in their quest for power. If Australia was totally secular, the majority of our people would remain good family orientated people with basic moral standards. Therefore I see no advantage in following a 3000-year-old mythical story. Cheers. 🇦🇺🦘

@@MrSeedi76 I think the most laughable contradiction is the original Sin. According to a verse in the bible, this cannot be so. It states god said, "children are not to be held responsible for the actions of their parents." That obviously includes their grandparents and their parents and all forefathers going right back to Adam and Eve. Then there's the thousands of young who perished in the great flood, only because god didn't like the way their parents were behaving.

@@MrSeedi76 The core factor of your comment was disassociating christianity from nationalism in the US. It's easy to see how ingrained it is by looking at the Maga T-shirts with Jesus all over them. The Republican officials are forever referring to Jesus as well. Many religious followers scramble to disassociate the extremists from themselves, claiming, "these are not true christians." Sadly they are, and it's the ideal tool in attempting to create a religious dictatorship in the country.

My pastor is doing this now! I have not been able to go! I live in California and this church is very racially integrated, and I do know that I have heard he did the same thing before the last election, and many left. I may have to leave, which is heartbreaking because I have many good friends that attend, and completely supported me 9 years ago after my husband passed away.

I am a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic with delusional affectations. I understand how falsehood can seem to be true. I also have been homeless and have lived in a home for the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled. So I have a different perspective on politics. When I learn that a politician is a Republican immediately I cannot bring myself to vote for them. I am also a strong Christian, an ordained Elder in the COGIC.

Yes, Tom is my friend- but I have never heard the succinct way in which he answered questions about deconstruction and his faith journey, as well as described what it means to reconstruct that faith into his decidedly Christian walk.
