Fishing with Pepper: Ocean salmon over the Siuslaw bar
Oregon coast river bars are dangerous places but occasionally during summer when the outlet flow is low, we get some great days- 3' ocean swell, soft outgoing tide, almost no wind forecast, then a soft incoming tide all afternoon to ride back in. August 13 was that sort of day this year so Pepper and I went fishing out to a depth of 180' off of Florence Oregon. This is probably her last ocean outing with me, she's approaching 13yo and has now been over the Siuslaw bar 3 times and gone with me 9 times out of Sunset Bay either to salmon fish or bottom fish at Simpson reef.
This trip, I had 5 salmon take-downs (that's like a boat fishing 3 rods having 15 take-downs!), 3 of mine stuck and I r...

Dual ROV Thruster Test
Просмотров 1362 месяца назад
I have been busy but finally finished a new mounting system that puts both my Blue Robotics T200 ROV thrusters off the right side of my Hobie Outback, the motor controller and safety shut-off are on the left side, and my batteries are just behind my seat, at the front of the rear deck so they don't get in Pepper's way. 40amp-hr appears to be plenty to run the thrusters wide open (4mph) for 2 ho...

Fishing with Pepper: "How NOT to bank land a winter steelhead. (roger's version)"
Просмотров 7266 месяцев назад
Setting aside that I got the fish, this was absolutely the worst bank landing ever. Instead of getting my foot behind the fish, it dropped off into deeper water and I ended up with one knee on shore and the other leg in 2' deep water, grabbed the line and just slid the fish back on shore. Not a recommended landing technique, zero stars. lol (however, a very tasty fish).
Bank Fishing with Pepper: Winter Steelhead

Pepper is over 12 now and still loves going bank fishing, she helps me remember to take a break now and then with her. Landed my first ever 'native' steelhead on the Siuslaw (they are rare) but also had my GoPro battery die for the second time while fighting fish. My original camera battery gets to 50% and it's done, time to recycle it. I saw the adipose fin as I pulled the fish into the shallo...
Ocean Crabbing out of Sunset Bay (without Pepper)
Просмотров 3258 месяцев назад
Ocean off of Oregon closes to ALL crabbing Oct16 every year and re-opens Dec.1 for recreational folks and normally commercial but they were delayed this year to Dec.16. So I took advantage of a fairly smooth Dec.13 to try and pull up a limit of big hard dungies that would otherwise end up in a commercial pot on their way to the grocery store (commercial minimum size is 6.25"). Wind came up but ...
Fishing with Pepper: another Siltcoos coho and lots of Pepper!

Got our full launch and lots of Pepper plus a bit of spinner fishing and another just amazing chrome coho. I've tagged 2 wild coho which means only 3 more allowed this year. At about 23", just didn't want to tag this one and based on the small head/tail, I think it was actually an oversize jack (that would have been HUGE if only it had spend another year in the ocean). Big rain coming, heading ...
Back bouncing fall chinook with Tanner.

If you have ever wondered what it's like catching strong fall chinook up river where the water is moving, here it is. A long video but what an amazing October day, driftboat back bouncing at it's best with 'tannersguideservice.com', we were on a smaller Oregon coast river on the perfect day. 3 of us landed 17 chinook, hooked and lost 8 more, and tagged just 4 (2 wild, 2 hatchery). All the fish ...

Siuslaw river is 1/day-2max wild chinook and 1/day-1max wild coho this year, based on what I have seen, should have been reversed, just 1max chinook but 2 max coho, but I'm glad they kept the retention very low this year. My goal has been to get 1 top quality coho from the kayak with Pepper and that is what happened. Lots of seals, when you see me chewing my Aloha bar and casually working to ne...
Fishing with Pepper: Bottom fishing limit including Cabezon

Pepper and I have released several Cabezon when retention was closed, finally retained our first plus the rest of our bottom fishing limit (2 lingcod, 4 black rockfish, 1 cabezon). T200 ROV Thruster battery test
Просмотров 363Год назад
Pepper and I went to Tahkenitch lake and ran the ROV thruster hard for most of 4 hours. It took my 50amp-hr LiFePO4 battery from 13.4v down to 13.12v which I estimate means we used about 50% of the battery capacity. This battery gives me basically unlimited juice to run the T200 thruster. I also tested running through some floating weeds and clearing them from the thruster, very easy to do.
Hobie Outback ROV Thruster Side Mount Test

Previously I installed 2 of these Blue Dolphin T200 thrusters on the rudder of my 2019 Hobie Outback. Very strong seaweed (para-weed or sea-cord?) defeated them and could not be cleared on the ocean. New mount hangs one thruster off the side of the kayak. Top speed- 3mph. With medium effort pedaling- 5mph. Full day battery test coming soon but initial results estimate is that my 50amp-hr LiFePO...

Fishing with Pepper: Ocean Chinook out of Sunset Bay Oregon
That’s an awesome video, much respect to you!
Are you throwing blue fox? What size? Look like nice fresh fish. Thanks
lots of people do, size 4 and 5, I mostly use old in-line spinners from Worden's (Yakima Bait) called Vibric rooster tail, 3/8 and 1/2oz. gold blade/orange body "Bad Boy" is my top one, especially on cloudy days, silver blade/pink body second best and top on sunny days.
Peppers back!
Roger, I look up to you. Brave sole, and pep needs a biscuit!
Dude your stoke holding that beautiful Chinook with Pepper giving you a kiss on the kayak - couldn't ask for a better moment. Made my day. THANK YOU! Wish I could take my adopted 10 year old 120 lb cane corso fishing with me on my kayaks but its not possible so I've hung up the kayaks and and SUP's for a while. All good... we do great hikes together. Spent 3 weeks hiking the Oregon coast from Cannon beach to Brookings with him last year . Most beautiful place we've ever been. You are so lucky to be there and it's great to see you are enjoying it as much as possible. Cheers!
Have you tried without the pedal drive in? On my pro angler with a torqeedo, I found that pedal assisting didn't add much. I had more speed with the pedal drive removed. Probably isn't much deck space for your drive and Pepper though.
the drive adds almost zero drag to the Outback when I am not pedaling, I get the same top speed with it removed or installed and I'm not pedaling. part of this is probably the new Outback design has the drive tucked up into the hull a bit more than earlier hull designs, basically just the fins coming out the bottom. pedaling definitely adds to my speed, I can go from 4.1mph thrusters only to 5mph with strong pedaling and burst to 6mph.
THIS is the video I was waiting on. Got myself a pair of electric thrusters for my foldable kayak, and needed to see a side-mounted thruster in action. Do you notice any flex on the pvc at full tilt? That is my main concern - wasted energy through flex in the pvc.
I did see some flex as I turned up the power but not too much and it was steady, didn't flex back and forth. However, I finally got my second thruster repaired (got a new outer housing from Blue Robotics for $20) and so I have a new 2 thruster side mount made from 1.5x0.125" Aluminum bar from Home Depot. If you look carefully, I have added a thin/strong line to counteract the forward flex when I turn up the thrust now. Hopefully these images post: imgur.com/a/10Iw7tr imgur.com/a/ix6wuPw
@@RogerEmigh very helpful. I need mine to be retractable when I go into shallow waters, so this gives me a lot of ideas. I like the pvc because it's lighter than the aluminum setup. If the flex isn't bad, I think I'll try that first since it also gives me the flexibility to get the thrusters out of the way when needed.

Awesome video I’m back bouncing spring chinook this weekend and this gets me fired up! Absolutely love that river wish I lived closer to fish it more often. Great video 👍
Nice! I found one in Florence last year too. Crazy looking fish

I can see the bank and your blue gloves
also i suggest u use head cameras for better point of view
agreed and I do have a head mount but it's been missing in my fishing/kayaking gear chaos for over a year, plus winter steelhead is my only bank fishing, the rest of the time the GoPro is on the 3' tall mount on the kayak. I have retired my original GoPro battery that started dying mid-fish and am only using the 2 news batteries that I have.
This is one of those channels that have little viewers and subs, but do nice content. underated. btw new sub
Nice fish, congrats
Go pros are gnarly for running out of battery in the best moment 😂
Wowow...con un solo propulsore sul mio kayak potrebbe andare bene? Che velocitá potrei avere ?
Cool net
Hey Rodger. Love the videos. I am thinking about getting a kayak. Never been on one yet. I think I'd like to get one that I might be able to take in the ocean as well. There is a rock pile off shore from Lincoln City that has some nice rock fish fishing. Would like to fish some of the lakes and rivers as well. Do you have any suggestions for something inexpensive and what type of price you would think is going to be needed? I would greatly appreciate someones advice that has experience with kayaks already. Thanks.
I highly recommend kayak fishing (obviously), I started in 2013, Siuslaw river and local lakes, made my first ocean trip out of Sunset Bay in March 2016. Up your way, most people either beach launch at Pacific City or shoot out of Depot Bay. I'm not going to be much help on lower cost kayaks, not if you are going to hit big water. I only know Hobie pedal drive and most people consider the Hobie Compass to be the entry level for ocean fishing. I highly recommend spending time at Northwestkayakanglers.com, you can easily get more kayak recommendations from members there.

Hey, I love your videos and I love pepper. Can you show some video of how you cook your catches maybe?
Son and I were out fishing on Simpson reef that day, in a boat, so probably saw you out there. You did well. Looks like we should have been crabbing too. Fishing wasn't bad, took home 8 rockfish and 3 ling cod, releasing 20+ other fish. Went back to Charleston about 11:30 as it was getting choppy out there and I wanted to cross the bar before the ebb tide got strong.
Good seeing you out again, Roger
Great catch
any recent reports on siltcoos
Roger what frequency do you use?
Radio?
My first dog as a boy was a black lab. He was my first best friend. Watching you with Pepper brings back so many wonderful memories. Tight lines!🎣
Roger, are still kayak fishing for salmon? I live in Coos Bay and have a Old Town PDL 120. Next week I’ll have a Helix 7 mounted and ready to find the big game. If your interested in having some company let me know. I’m available anytime for any type of fishing.
Is siltcoos turning on yet? Thanks
nope.
@@RogerEmigh aarg:).... whats your guess? 🙃
Why do you reel right handed control your rod right handed then try netting the fish left handed when you have to switch your rod to your left hand to reel why not just hold the rod in your left hand and the net in the right hand if you need to puck up slack in the line you can just drop the net and reel instead of switching hands with the rod to reel then switching the rod back to net? Right handed reels are not for right handed people its just weird to me? 🤔 🤷
Nice fish though looks fun in the yak
a couple of reasons- I have my kayak rigged so that I do all my big fish netting on the left side, nothing mounted on that side in the way and if you try that side with net in right hand, you are coming across and down in front of you, not sweeping up the side of the kayak like I do with my left hand. also, to control the fish better and pull it towards the net, I like to grab the rod up just behind the first guide, so I do that with right hand that was on the reel handle, let go with my left and grab the net. also, I'm left handed.
Looks fun, Man nice fish!
Ah man take me with you next time. I have a boat and I'm in Eugene.
With that big rain last night we aught to have some schools making it into the lakes
based on this forecast, if not this week, that next bump starting Nov1 is going to light things up: www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?MPLO3
I released a 15" coho there last week. I'm pulling the trigger on a brand new Hobie or Old town this week before the real action starts!
A friend here in town just turned me on to your channel. So now I’m a new subscriber and living here in Florence with my old Ocean Kayak plastic battleship sit on top. I’m working a lot for now but your video’s are inspiring me to set some time aside to get out on the water more often to wet a line. Keep the great videos coming

Pleasure meeting you today at the game Roger! Hopefully see you on the water and tight lines!
That was great, hope you find some lake coho to play with this year!
Hey roger it was great seeing you the other day, if you still have my number and want a fishing buddy on the coos this year let me know!
that last fish, at 17m09s that fought so hard (line had looped around it's lower jaw near the back), I added a 'click of drag' at least 2 or 3 times during the fight, and the drag started at what we had been fighting big fish with all day!
Nice fish
Good vid. I use CW reels in my yak too. Lightest rod you would use for this type of trolling? I'm a gear head with 23 rods and use 7' M - 7' MH normally.
exactly, I like 7' to 8.5' on the kayak, M is perfect for these coho, MH also, 15# leader is fine, Ultragreen or CXX is my choice, no reason for flouro.
Good job roger. I went out on the 12th and found a load of porcinis and chantrelles and one purple/brown polypore i couldnt identify right near the outlet. Youve given me hope for a fish out of the lakes
oh boy, the hedgehogs I got are fantastic, also some real nice king boletes.
Can you add sources for the parts? I'm building something similar.
check the video and other comments, I think they have all been identified.
@@RogerEmigh which model thrusters did you use, T200 or T500? Thanks
T200
@@RogerEmigh Okay great thanks. Did you end up finding a solution to prevent seaweed from stopping the motors?
the solution I ended up with is moving it to the side where I can pull it up and clear it. ruclips.net/video/ZFN9fYJF5vw/видео.htmlsi=UAiiTaX87wq4s-N2

Nice coho, we saw a seal take a fish away on the Siuslaw when we were there a few weeks ago. Still brought home a chinook :)
Good job as usual Roger, and pepper. Do you think the siltcoos arms have any fish up there yet?
nope. but I did check the mouth of Siltcoos river today at high tide and there was a nice connection to the ocean, with 5 seals in it. so that should be SRC, perhaps some coho jacks but I will be very surprised to see any adult coho activity yet. always a chance however...
