Bernie Marsden - Need Your Love So Bad /w Joe Bonamassa - Jan 24th 2020
From a show at the Under The Bridge venue in London, where I played keys for Bernie Marsden. Joe Bonamassa was in town recording his Royal Tea album, and he came on as a special guest and sat in for two songs.
It was a real pleasure, and quite fun, to play with Bernie and get to know him. May he rest in peace...

Raindrop In A Drought (Mike Andersen cover)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.4 года назад
Since we're stuck in the house all the time I decided to do a Hammond organ cover of a Mike Andersen song called 'Raindrop In A Drought' Always loved this tune and Mike was gracious enough to share the original stems so I could have a little go at the tune with his killer arrangement. Check out his great version here: ruclips.net/video/AGnUQVQ3JBk/видео.html

Hammond XK-5 organ vs B3 comparison

I tried to match XK-5 to the tone of my B3 to the smallest detail. Tweaked every tone wheel for tone and leakage, every contact of every key, the volumes, the V/C, percussion volume, the travel of the expression pedal etc. I think I got pretty close so made a vid to demonstrate. The tone wheel set will be available on the Hammond EU site for everyone to download. Sharing is caring right. I like...

    I have a 57 b3 and a 68 122. Obviously they are going through the same leslie. In a blindfold test, i couldn't tell one from the other. When people say that digital clones are thinner/shrill in the upper octave it is because of the internal/external sim going through a powered monitor, that's what makes it shrill. There is no shrillness when going through a tube leslie.

    VERY VERY close.. just a bit warmer/fatter in certain parts on the B3.. most of the parts I can't even tell the difference .. I closed my eyes and listened and was wrong 1/2 the time.. the full chords in lower octaves sound a bit warmer on the B3... all in all though... incredible simulation... and a lot easier to carry in the lower manual (20 lbs) and upper XK 5 (40 lbs?) to a gig... side story.. I was pricing out a utility trailer and Kari organ moving dolly set so I could bring my A 100 to gigs.. and it was like 2000 bucks.. so I bought a lower manual instead for about the same.. and now I can carry the whole B3 in under both arms :)

    From a Hammond fan- boy, I’m glad there are alternatives out there for musicians that don’t want to hire a moving crew to play keys. I think it sounds great. Is it as good as my dad’s B3 with a high boy Leslie hot Rodded out with dual fender showman amps? No. But it’s damn great.

      Have you seen the Viscount Legends? You might want to check those out. They are very impressive. The double keyboard head (same as B3) is about 46 lbs! The entire weight of the head, full bass pedal-board and legs kit is about 140lbs or so. But as it all is in pieces, it's easy to cart out to the SUV. As for sound, there are also comparison videos of B3 and Legends. IMPRESSIVE!

    • @BobFridzema
      @BobFridzema 3 года назад

      Hmm it wasn’t difficult, just tedious. Pull out one drawbar at a time, play all notes and make sure both devices sound the same by tweaking the parameters. The XK5 will show you exactly which tonewheel you’re hearing by playing one note, while pulling out a drawbar at the same time

    • @clintjones9848
      @clintjones9848 3 года назад

      That makes sense, thanks. I don't have a tonewheel organ to compare it to. We'll see if I get around to messing with the tonewheels. I've changed most of the other parameters and it's really optimized it to my taste so far.

  • @downpatmusic
    @downpatmusic 3 года назад

    Excellent comparison. For a studio keyboard player looking for a better sounding B3 sound and a better keyboard to play it with I'd say the XK-5 would do the trick. Perhaps for an upgrade even in the studio for listening and maybe recording a new small Leslie Studio 12+ Rotary Combo Amp. Also since this review it seems like Hammond has released the SKX Dual Manual 61 and even newer SKpro which Hammond says uses the XK-5 sound but with simulated water fall keyboard effect, but not mechanical keyboard applied. So now I have 3 choices to choose from. I am thinking the XK-5 still is the best close copy as the newer SKX and SKpro models expand into additional keyboard sounds and do not dedicate to the B3 copy as much. Thoughts?

    • @BobFridzema
      @BobFridzema 3 года назад

      The XK-5 is the most authentic B3 copy out there right now. If that’s what you want it’s really the only one to go for. The SKX uses an older sound engine, and the SK Pro is more aimed to be workhorse tang also covers piano and other sounds. Pure B3 copy the XK5 is the one :) having said that, the SK Pro could be ideal if you’re not a pure Hammond player but need more of an all round keyboard

    • @patrickey5552
      @patrickey5552 3 года назад

      @@BobFridzema Thanks for the reply. Yea Agreed, I'd go for the most authentic B3 copy as it becomes an instrument and not as much of a convenience sample player which have their place. There are wonderful sampled pianos and electric pianos available already via sample libraries and sophisticated controllers, but the combination of the XK-5 mechanical waterfallish keyboard, editable settings to closely match the B3 characteristics, make it a instrument of uniqueness. You've got great ears and chops to closely match volume and settings of B3 to XK-5. Great work there and keep it up.

      @@BobFridzema Update, been demoing the Hammond B3-X plug in developed by Hammond and IK MultiMedia. It is fantastic. I am told the Leslie Sim is the best Leslie Sim available and it does sounds great. Though unable to test this, the plug-in has a profiles so that Hammond organs can control the plug ins settings like drawbars, all switches, Leslie on, etc... I am told by Hammond artists that the sounds matches the XK-5 and that the Leslie Sim on the B3-X plug in exceeds the Leslie Sim on both the Vent pedal, which many had been using, and XK-5 itself. I would highly recommend demoing the IK MultiMedia B#-X as I think you would love it and the trial-demo is full functioning for the 10 day demo period. I would love to see you demo it on You Tube. There are not many good demos yet on it.

      downpatmusic hi pat, To be honest I’m not really in it to demo things, I’m a player first so not sure if I’ll get around to doing this. I might give it a go but I do prefer my Hammond experience to be on a hardware board vs coming from a computer plugin. Latency, reliability, and I’m old fashioned I guess. But hey who knows, maybe I’ll give it a go one day
