It works the same as in traditional chess. When a player is checkmated, all their pieces turn grey and are “dead pieces” which can’t move or capture, but still block living players’s moves and can still be captured (but for 0 points). A checkmate is also worth 20 points.

I recently discovered bughouse and I’m still getting used to it. I’m planning on making more bughouse videos in the near future so keep your eyes peeled!

Yeeeeah. That was a rather unfortunate blunder. Also, I’ve not heard “bottled” used as a synonym to “messed up” but l like it. Imma be stealing that word.

If that stressed you out watching it with the luxury of pausing the video to analyze the board more, imagine how l felt being in the middle of that and having to make decisions in real time, all the while knowing I was probably blundering every other move or so. 😅

Once a player forfeits manually or by timeout-but never got checkmated-his king keeps moving randomly on its own so as not to rob the remaining players of the 20 points for checkmate. That’s why you’ll often see surviving players go after the king in the bubble to get some easy points.

Indeed it was. Usually I’d be disappointed in myself for missing that during the game, but since it was a complicated checkmate l think I’ll forgive myself a little for that one. 😅

Is the game trying to make it so that someone can’t be checkmated but then still have enough points to beat one of the surviving players?

I mean, it’s nothing fancy, but l do like it. Short, clean, and to the point.

Well, l would like to say l was trying to go for a mate there cuz 20 points is better than 3…but l just didn’t see the hanging knight at all due to time crunch and fixation on mating yellow. Taking the knight would have definitely been a better move.

Oh. Oops. I’ve been a little under the weather for about two weeks now and l missed that blank spot at the beginning. 😅 Imma see if there’s a way to fix it.

You know it, buddy! I can’t tell you how many games I’ve won because l didn’t know what to do so l just threw a check that ended up being mate.

Oh yeah. And sticking around until checkmate (or in this case, queen vs pawns) was a respectable choice, even with the points being how they were. Yellow actually did have a chance to checkmate me if they outplayed me, and I salute their sticking with it for as long as they did.

That is true. On such a tight time crunch l keep forgetting that even a spare pawn l can grab could be a powerful tool for my teammate. Imma see if future bughouse games l play can be on a slightly longer timer because 3 minutes is just too fast for this level of complexity. 😅

l actually recently got a massive mic upgrade, so the audio quality _should_ be much better in these newer videos compared to my older ones.

Sure! I know there’s a way to export traditional chess games as a text file, but I don’t know if 4 player chess has the same feature. If you can share a link to the game or something then I’d be glad to take a look and make a breakdown video about it.
