Greetings Adventures! I'm Matt Slaton, a 31-year-old tabletop gaming enthusiast. My journey began in 2008 at the age of 16, starting with HeroQuest and progressing through D&D 4e, Open Quest, and Pathfinder. My role as a Gamemaster began not long after.
A pivotal shift occurred when I discovered the OSR, embracing a rules-light, player-focused approach. Prioritizing the players' experience over rigid rules, I've cultivated a style that emphasizes improvisation and immersion.
When I'm not running games, I'm absorbed in crafting my own campaign setting, developing GM tools, and conjuring up homebrew rules. My creative pursuits extend to crafting gaming terrain and painting miniatures, making every aspect of the tabletop experience uniquely engaging. Join me on this journey where imagination knows no bounds!

Fantasy TTRPG Miniature Painting
Wow, great job, thank u I will be using your oracle😊
Thanks, very helpful :)
As a beginner in this hobby (using cheap amazon minis and craft paints) this brings me some calm after watching tons of tutorials where they paint really cool minis with fancy paints 😅
I'm glad this helps. Every thing I have painted has been with apple barrel paints and brushes from Walmart. The "quick shade/Darkwash" that I use is just dark wood stain that I found at the dollar general.
Thanks for these videos. They are very good. Any chance you would be willing to share your shadowdark tables you created. :)
Which tables are you wanting specifically? I do have some stuff on my Itch Page already.
@@mattslaton i was interested in the shadowdark rules reference sheets
@@mattslaton and i will check your twitch page out
I came to learn more of the shadow dark solo play but stayed because of how you take these slightly random/slightly controlled rolls and made, essentially, a great story. It's so fascinating to watch, I mean it. It totally changed my perspective of how I see solo play and I'm definitely now convinced to give it a try when I was apprehensive before. Thank you Matt 🤙
I'm glad you are enjoying these. It takes a little work to realize that it's not cheating to just decide to take the story where you want it to go.
been wanting to learn how to do hexcrawls and watching you play is really entertaining and informative! hope you continue the series!
I'm a newbie to TTRPG, and really want to do some solo play. Watching you is so encouraging! I love it so far!
An annoyance writes: Halfling with longbow? Could be a self-launching device. Please kick me. All best.
Cool
Nice work man!
Also awesome solo story! I am going to try and run a "solo" campaign for me and my two buddies tomorrow. This gave me a lot of help on how to pull that off.
Hello I am new to TTRPG in general. Is 6 just a generic number of random encounters? I saw something about each hes maybe being 6 miles.. So maybe 1 encounter per mile?
In Shadowdark, a single hex is 6 miles across, and hiking through a hex takes 4 hours. For unsafe hexes, roll for random encounters every 3 hours, using a d6-an encounter occurs on a roll of 1. Sometimes my math is off. But this is what I try to stick to.
I like simple minis like this. I dont want to spend an hour painting a goblin when i got to paint 10 more 😂
I agree, done is better than Perfect.
Great actual play, when we seeing the next episode?!
Love the viideo and the style you explain. There is just one little detail: Halflings average about 3 feet tall - longbow is commonly 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall So making it that the thief could not draw the bow if his life depends on it...
Great format. Love the 10-15 minute sessions. They’ve got some gold they should do some carousing!
These are great, man! Good pacing, good use of the oracle, everything. I've been playing D&D since Moldvay (yep, 1980). I liked things about every edition since then, but nothing (except maybe Knave) has yet approached the feeling of playing original Basic. But... I don't know much about Shadowdark yet. I'm learning a lot from watching this. Thanks again for sharing them!
This is one of the best done solo plays on RUclips. Great job.
Thank you sir, I really tried to make it enjoyable to watch.
Great idea using tables from different games.
Hi, where did you get the hex map template?
I found these at.. gm-lazarus.itch.io/hexcrawl-sheets They are very nice.
@@mattslaton Thanks!
Thanks for producing these. They are great and a good look at Shadowdark.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! You do such a great job showing off the rules of Shadowdark and how they can create amazing narrative moments! So amazing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What time tracker are you using?
I have the same question. What is the source? Thanks for resuming your videos.
I had to go figure out where I found it. It took several hour, but I have not returned empty handed. Here is you the director link. nat-handsome-games.itch.io/table-top-roleplaying-time-tracker
@@mattslaton Awesome. Thank you
@@ptah956 no problem. I was really impressed with the innovative design of it.
This was great! Love how quickly you move through the book and keep to story going :D
It is all thanks to the power of Editing. In reality, there are times when I will step away for and how or so to think on where I want the game to go.
@@mattslaton fair enough! Sorta like that clarity you get when you step away from a boss fight
Great video Keep 'em coming! I had that Basilisk egg come up in my campaign...i got greedly a lost my Fighter. You were smart to keep on walking.😊
I have also run into that basilisk before. It is definitely no Joke.
Really glad this series is continuing!
Me too. I enjoy doing it. And I have really refined my production process for videos going forward. So, hopefully it will be much easier to get these videos pushed out.
Fun stuff
That was super fun. Only Knave2e and Shadowdark? Awesome job. Looking forward to the next one.
For this one, yes. I'm liking keeping my additional resources pretty lite.
Bruh! I love you. Its between you and the AI campaign right now. Keep it up.
Thank you, I'm glad you are enjoying it.
Not sure if it's just me, it seems like something happened to the sound. There's no low end, compared to previous videos. Also the volume level is not as high
Yeah, I was working with my back up audio. A lot of my footage did not want to cooperate in this video.
Fun!
Poor ape... didn't even get to see the rest of his lair! Great video!
Glad you enjoyed
Next episode pleaze 😢
Pretty neat. I use two d6s in my oracle but I count odd rolls as NO and even as YES with the higher roll determining the overall outcome and the lower roll being a modifier. There's an obvious higher chance for YES results so the player can steer the action a bit more. Doubles trigger a special event related to the outcome. Both YES or both NO mean Definite NO/YES. The presence of an opposed lower result is the '...but...' modifier. so... rolling a 3 and 6 would be 'Yes, but there's a minor set back.' Rolling a 5 and 4 would be a 'No, however, you have an opportunity.'
The table I created back in the 1980's for oracles is based more on character development, real life oracles and how the Ancient Greeks and Romans oracles operated. I found that oracles around the world never spoke right out giving blunt answers. More often they were jungled words, riddles, puzzles and strange mutterings. Starts with what sort of offering the devoted brings to the chamber/temple/shrine/sanctuary. Depending on the size/quantity (rated 1-12) will determine how many times I roll on the next chart. The next chart I roll on is 120 random words. These words are what the oracle speaks to the character. From which they themselves have to interpret. It's never just a plain old Yes-or-no answer. I use modifiers depending on if the temple or God being visited is aligned with the character, if the characters is devoted to the faith, how often they pray/meditate and celebrate the holidays. If the characters were consulting a divination tool, like cards, dice, runes, crystals, flames, smoke or whatever: I still used the same tables. But if the characters just want a yes-or-no answer, I will roll a d6., But the characters have to remember that the future is always changing with each step they take.
This is so cool!! I just finished the 1st episode. I'm excited!
This is so intriguing. You play it so quickly but so cleanly and the story coming together is so surprisingly coherent for being mostly randomly generated.
I am loving this! More please!
Loving this series. Looking forward to the next episode!
I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm planning on getting another episode out soon.
Not a fan of “and” and “buts?”
I just find that I don't really use them. They seem to get in the way of the way my games flow.
This is so good, I could watch this for hours. I have never done solo rpg'ing but you definitely inspired me to give it a go.
If you give it a shot, let me know how it went. The best advice I can offer is to experiment and keep the game loose to keep your momentum through the session.
Oh man, this is the last episode? Bummer, this has been a fun watch.
I'm glad to see so many people are enjoying those first couple episodes. im hoping to have another out soon.
Very cool, looking forward to more episodes!
Well done, I love your intuition about how the story unfolds. Your story is interesting and plausible.
Much appreciated. With solo play, I really got to make myself slow it down and keep from getting my character in hot water too quickly. That is how a game turns into a dumpster fire.
You said you are using your own oracle? Did you make a video about it and how it works? I would find that interesting and useful. How often are you making the videos? Can't wait for the level up. Bring on the next video!
I do have an Oracle video on the channel. I don't really have an upload schedule for the moment. I didn't really expect the community to pick up as quickly as it has.
Those yellow d6 is what you needed to roll to make your characters. "We will roll 3d6 and take the highest roll" all dice roll a 6 bam baby! Question, why did you roll a d8 for the direction you would travel? You are in a 6-sided hex. Would a d6 have been a better choice? Lastly, how are four level 1 characters with low hp going to fight a vampire? Guess I'll have to tune in next time to find out. Just an fyi, I ask these questions because I am trying to learn and find out the reason behind things. I am not trying to offend, troll, or be a jerk. Hopefully that comes across. I would like to recommend you link the products you are using. I was trying to look for the quest books but did not know they were called "The book of random table quests" until I came back and slowed your video down. Enjoying the videos so far.
It very cool to see all the questions, i appreciate the Engagement. To answer your questions... 1. That green d8 is actually a directional dice. It has N, NE, E, SE, ECT. 2. I'm not sure how we will take on a full blown Vamp. Hopefully we can gain a few levels and put together a plan and gather resources that will give us an advantage and Bridge that Difficulty Gap.
