Nowhere does the Quran or Hadith's legitimize the appointment of a prophet's successor by Shura! This was a devious invention to usurp power... Besides there is NO president in the examples of prior prophets where they elected their "friends or companions" but conveyed follow-on leadership to their own children, or in their bloodline. (ex: Moses to Aaron, David to Solomen, Abraham to Ishmael & Issac, etc).

Umar conspired with Abu Bakr to usurp power after the Prophet's (SAS) demise despite the clear designation of Ali Bin Abu Talib as his successor, just month's before, at Ghadir Khumm. Umar's refusal to obey and allow the Prophet (SAS) to dictate/clarify his last will and testament (something even allowed to Abu Bakr and himself (Umar) at their approaching demise, conveys their own hypocrisy. Why would Hazrat Ali (AS) name his children after the Pious predecessors if he was resentful of them. Only when a person has an intimate bond with another or is fond of him will he name his children after that person. Naturally, no one will name his children after a person who he hates and is not comfortable with. Naming ones children after prominent personalities is emblematic of veneration for them or is in order that their memories be cherished. Likewise, at times, the names of prominent personalities of any nation are kept by those to come after them to attain the goodness which they had embodied. These are aspects which are commonly practiced by all and do not require any substantiation.
