'24 Archery Mule Deer - Father & Son
The Nevada high desert: where challenge meets beauty, and every ridge could hide a buck. This spot-and-stalk mule deer hunt tested my skills and patience, but sometimes, you get lucky. First spot, first stalk, first shot of the season - and my dad right there to see it all come together. Couldn't ask for a better start or a more meaningful moment.

99% certain Guide Thermal makes these for Athlon.
I also noticed that their scope housing is very similar to other thermal companies out there and I brought that up to Athlon. They said that most housings are made in the same factories but the internal components belong to and are different for each of the thermal scope companies. So Athlon, Guide, etc, make the internals of their own scopes.
what wrist sling is that?
To be honest I don't really remember. I have had this a long time and I can't remember the name, nor is it marked with a name. Sorry about that!
@@stalkartist No worries. I just noticed the entire cord is pretty thick which I like. Most slings have a thinner cord these days.
Are these really waterproof? I love the design but i'm not sure if this model is suited for really rainy climate
They are however I would not recommend them for a very rainy climate. Correct me if I am wrong but when gortex gets wet, it traps your foots moisture inside since it cannot breath, leaving your foot feeling damp inside. They are perfectly fine for occasional rain, or walking across a stream, but under constant moister, I would not recommend. Hope that helps!
Like the editing good job
Thank you!
How many miles was your packout with the muley? Also, what was the battery life like for that trip and how many hours did you get out of a full charge? TY
It was maybe 2 miles, mostly downhill. So I didn't use much battery at all. Pack Wheel's website says you get 10 - 30 miles of range on a single charge (depending on load, terrain, and temperature). Hopefully that answered your question.
Can you use this during the day?
Yes you can
No one runs radar on freshwater lakes. Bass boats aren’t equipped for that. Offshore without question!
Where did radar come from? This is about a camera.
The other post below stated "still need radar" - that's why I posted what i did. This was not directed at you. You did a good job. First time I have seen one on a bass boat. I have two of them, one on my 456 Canyon Grady White along with a flir and one on my 246 Robalo. Both are offshore to near shore boats, not freshwater.@@stalkartist
@@mikedefee Ahhhhhhh lol Thank you for clarification. I was confused since it wasn't a reply to the comment directly hah Sorry! I was just thinking "Where did radar come from?" haha
There was definitely a rattle
That secondary rattle after I took my bow sight off ended up being the knob that holds my bow sight in place. The bow is definitely not the quietest, but also not the loudest bow I've shot. Like I said, it's kind of just average in terms of the sound it makes.
What became of the Black Mamba Air? No good?
I was having issues in the long run with tuning. I still have it and still use it when I want a more compact setup though.
Basically the Sierra Designs High Side 1
What QD scope mount are you using?
It is honestly a pretty generic one I have had forever that I don't remember the name of. I have been getting some impact shifts the more I use it, so I need to upgrade to a better one.
These shoes or the lowa renegade?
Honestly, I’m not too familiar with the Renegade but they look nice too! I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
Does the scope have onboard audio recording
Not onboard. To record audio you need to have your phone connected via wifi to the thermal using their Athlon Thermal app. Then audio will be recorded through your phone. Hope that answers your question.
F'n hilarious!!!!!!
Would love to see a comparison video with AGM, Pulsar and iRay.
If AGM, Pulsar, and iRay sent me out thermals, I would definitely do one! lol
1. Price is high but I get it. 2. I wish everyone would standardize to quick change 18650 batteries.
$5k. nope.
It is pricey
? My dealer told me $3750 and they are $3999 all over the web.
@@joehackney3687 MSRP is $4999 but yes, I am sure they are actually selling at a lower cost.
@@joehackney3687OKAY. STILL. NOPE.
Running $2500 on expertvoice as of today
Still need radar
Radar would also help. These are all just tools useful for different things.
Nice Review! I am now subscribed. I have been on the fence between the 50-640 and Pulsar XP50. On paper at all magnification ranges the Athlon pixels count is higher. I have had the Athlon optic in my shopping cart on Expert Voice for a month. The one question I am trying to figure out is whether the Athlon has audio while recording. Are you able to answer that question? Thanks and looking forward to your next review.
Thank you! Both great options! To answer your question it’s yes and no.. When you have your phone connected through the WiFi of the thermal it will record audio from your phone. But the thermal itself doesn’t record audio. You just have to have your phone connected to it and it will use your phones microphone to record audio. Hope that helps!
I would recommend pulsar as they are solid thermal company and have excellent warranty. A new thermal without built in audio this day and time is already behind the ball.Excellent review
I’ve looked through a pulsar and was awsome…buddie hit a coyote runnin at 410yrds
@@charlesmullins3238 I have been running pulsar since 2016 and have had one warranty issue and it was replaced with brand new unit in a week turn around.
@@charlesmullins3238Nice!
Is it waterproof
According to the Alps website they say it is "weatherproof". From my experience, I have had it in some pretty wet conditions and it seems to be pretty waterproof. You do however get a lot of condensation build up inside. It's never leaked or anything, I am just assuming it might be a lower IP rating. Hope that helps!
thanks!
small cams
Small wheels hard draw cycle.,
Have you shot them before? Or just assuming? I find them to be just fine.
@@stalkartist No Interesting bow but from looking at reviews it looked like it had a big hump in the rear which is common on most bows with small wheels. I shoot a bowtech ss at 60# on the comfort setting because of bad shoulder [76yrs old] and was wondering if I could shoot that bow. The closest dealer is 150 miles away. Your input would be nice.
@@miltonreeths522 Gotcha, thank you for clarification. I would say that these shorter axel to axel bows sit in the middle as far as draw cycle comfort goes. If you're older and used to shooting that bowtech on a smoother setting, you might not like these APA bows to be honest. Hope that helps.
Ordering some stuff for early season whitetail here in IL. Hoping they drop some late season heavy bibs and jacket 🙏🏼
Yeah that would be awesome!
Just suscribed to ur channel! Thanks for the review!
Oh awesome thank you!
Really interested in the Black Mamba 38!
They missed the mark on the vestibule fly. I was looking at this tent but the way the vestibule zips open and secures to the side instead of along the top seam prevents it from being propped up and open for ventilation as well as protection from light rain like the King's Peak 2. Too bad too, it's on sale at REI Outlet right now for under $100.
Yeah that's a good point! It's also a little tough to lean all the way forward to reach the zipper to open it.
What sizes did y’all get for the hoodie and rize jacket?
I got a Mediums and Brandon got XL
Will you do a review on the 31 black mamba ??
I unfortunately don't have one to make a review on. I appreciate the interest thought!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. I think I am going to stick with my old free standing, even though its a bit bigger and heavier.
I use gtx boots in 6 months of snow, and you definitely need to change socks and dry boots. If u stop moving with wet feet, at sub zero, they will freeze.
So an ASAT copy. Super original. 🤡
You must have the same opinion about Kuiu and Sitka? Sage Country and Kings?? Killik and Pnuma??? Predator and ASAT???? The list goes on 😂
How about the weight?
Do they say “Z87” on the glasses?
great review, i can not find the difference between the mountain trainer. what kind of loads have you packed on these along with distance and terrain? thank you
Thank you! Since these are my main hunting boots I have hiked a lot with around 20-40 lbs of gear. I mostly have used them on the west coast (United States) in dry mountain terrain with sharp objects. They have held up really well and have a lot of tread on them still. I also used them in some wet thicker terrain and they grip really well. I typically backpack hunt as well so I have put a lot of miles on these and I truly can't be any happier. The only issue I have is when it comes to being in constant wet terrain, when they are wet for long periods of time your feet will start to get wet since the gortex lining can't evaporate the heat from your feet when wet. Your feet will start to get wet. I also sweat a lot so this could be different for you. Hope that helps!
You’re cute. LolI was hoping that it would come together like magic. Lol. But you made it easy!
Yeah I wish it was that easy! hah Thank you!
Does it have micro swivel on the tip(lilian) section? I have Mizuchi and looking for little softer action. I think Kaida is great candidate 😊
It does not, but yes I think this has been an awesome rod!
@@stalkartist Thank you!!
I mean camo patern ,brand clothing
Oh gotcha hah It is Vuni Gear camo
What camp are you using
Camp?
Thank you for going close up
I tried them out on my foot and i have wide foot. + flatfood And the really was nice but just too narrow for my foot. Sadly enough salewa dosnt make a wide model.
Awesome video man! Thanks for the review! <3
Thank you!
Might be time to replace my 6 year old PSE stinger 3g with something more serious. Love the pulley stop rod and hole for changing the shoot string it's about time someone came up with that idea.
I've been shooting APA bows (both single and dual cam) for 10+ years. I hunt in the Eastern deer woods and 15-day backcountry hunts in the Rocky Mountains, hunting with the camp on my back. The bows have never failed me, so I have not input on their customer service. (This is a good thing, right?!) Their customer relations in ordering the bow and providing guidance on their technologies has been second to none! The bows just simply work!
Awesome man! Glad to hear.
Can outer first ??
Say what?
@@stalkartist can build outer first before?
@@onyol2934 No. This is not a freestanding tent. The 2 tent pole rods can only be held up if they are ran through the tent first then each corner of the tent has to be staked down. Hope that answers your question.
