    I am really enjoying your adventure videos. I rode the southern tier in 2022. It was fun to see some of the sights and towns that I saw when I was on that tour. It was amazing. Can you tell me where you got the little bicycle riding on the map insert that is at the end of your video? Is that an app? Thanks for posting your bike backing tour! Carmen Fargo, ND

    Personally I won't get on a bike without 2 rear view mirrors. Being able to see idiot cars and trucks behind has kept me safe for 76 years and in 14 countries. If encountered police back down every time.. As a pedestrian I Jay Walk as I am not about to assume I have the right of way in a crosswalk with a green walk signal.. Way to many directions to be struck by cars. Jay Walking I do not make assumptions and has kept me safe. And mostly I will ride against traffic which was the way it was taught in the 1950's. You haven't experienced hills till you have done the Andes and grades of 41% and elevations beyond 16,000 feet. You'll be walking maybe just 3 meters between rests. I am pretty much done peddling anything over 25% And downhill you need disc brakes as the heat builds up to blow tires otherwise. I run only tubeless tires and use a tire sealant. With tubeless you do not need dismount the wheel to repair at least most of the time. When I ran tube tires, I learned how to repair as well as replace the tube without dismounting the wheel. In Costa Rica I have resorted to a 1200 watt RAM Mia electric scooter that looks like a Vespa. We have mostly hills of 25 to 35% and for the past year need the bike doing some of the work. I have a 1X2 meter utility/camp trailer for the e-scooter. So can camp about anywhere. And here people are friendly. For a couple dollars or nothing at all they will allow me to plug in and recharge. But Throttle only I have a 120 kilometer range. So half of Costa Rica is within range without recharge. As I am not a Resident of any country, I cannot get a driver's license. So now 12 years walking, biking and using other means.

      It is a Goal Zero solar panel and charger. I have had it since 2017 and it still keeps my cell phone charged up while riding and the battery pack charges other devices when I camp. Newer models are probably even better.

    Hi Marshall. Thanks for the video series. I'm thinking of making a trip on part of the Southern Tier trail from Tempe to El Paso in early April of this year. I haven't done anything quite this long and nothing nearly as steep. I'm located in Virginia so my trails have been the Erie Canal and the GAP/C&O, both of which are fairly flat. Did you have any problems with the elevation and steepness of the terrain in this section? It's hard to get good hill training at living at about 300' above sea level. I'm also thinking of doing this solo as I don't have any friends that are bikers. Did you see many solo bikers along the way?

    • @Bubba1979
      @Bubba1979 Год назад

      Hi Jeff, definitely do some hill work, Emory pass is in this section and is the highest elevation. Some climbs lasted over an hour. That said, all of the hills are manageable by gearing down and taking breaks. Regarding solo riders, we saw many. No issues except lack of companionship for communication and support. Just make sure you can fix almost anything that can break on the bike. In Virginia go ride Mt Weather (over n back) and go for a ride on Skyline drive from Front Royal for representative hill samples. I wish you all the best on your adventure.

    • @Bubba1979
      @Bubba1979 Год назад

      I used the maps from Adventure Cycling. I carried the paper maps but 95% of the time I used their app “Bicycle Route Navigator”. The route has been travelled by many cyclists who provide feedback to keep it up to date to reflect your safest options and avoid known road outages.

    What type of tires do you have? I have Marathon Plus tires, which I heard are the top when it comes to not getting a flat tire. With an ElliptiGo, the back tire is tough to take on and off (I don't know how, so I'm gonna have to learn how to do it).

  • @watm1962
    @watm1962 Год назад

    Hey. I'm looking to do this ride on the Southern Tier on my ElliptiGo in the next 5 years. Is it possible to stay ONLY on paved roads. Plus I'm thinking of renting a motor home (a small one) so I have a place to sleep every night and food in the frig (a friend of mine will drive it) as I am not the camping type. From your experience, are there safe places to park it each night depending on how far I ride each day? I've never done elevations, so that part of the ride, I may only be able to do 20-50 miles tops...maybe even less. I'd love to hear from you.

    • @Bubba1979
      @Bubba1979 Год назад

      Hi Neal, my wife and I each have an Elliptigo and I am sure it could make the trip. There are a few gravel sections but they are hard packed and a size 32 or larger tire will handle it. Marathon Plus is the way to go. I recommend getting the maps from adventure cycling and mapping out your planned stops, but be prepared to modify based on weather (wind and rain primarily). Motor home will take additional planning, especially in Arizona and Texas if you want electrical hookup. Bike maintenance will be key so make sure you can change both front and back tires, chain, shift cable and brake pads. Clean the tracks and load wheels after each days ride. I wish you all the best.
