A Quick History of the U.S. Chain Cent

The U.S. Chain Cent, minted in 1793, is a popular collectible as it was the first coin issued by the United States Mint, marking an important historical milestone. Its unique design, featuring 15 interlocking chain links representing the original states, adds to its appeal for collectors. Additionally, its rarity-having been minted for only a short period-drives demand among numismatists.

After narrowly escaping from a marauding band of orcs, Gandalf leads Bilbo and the dwarves through a mountain passage to the safety of Rivendell. Awesome coin 🪙 👏 👌 😎 👍
@@nafex3740 Yes it is, and it has a lot of history. Thanks for watching!
Man, this is the number one scene of all the Hobbit. Most amazing place with atmosphere delivered in so good way, and first time seeing is life changing for Bilbo. The way that it is altered of the main Rivendell theme in LotR is absolutely awesome. So pristine and peaceful and magical music.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree - amazing music and cinematography, and Bilbo's expression when he finally sees Rivendell is great.
@rivendellcoinsantiquities4964 True, you can feel how stunned he is.
That is a cool one. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This was very well done, love to hear the history about the coins. I also love the channel icon, looks very professional. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words. I think it is interesting and important to understand the historical context of coins.
Buen video excelente contenido nos está brindando
Gracias y saludos!
Very early modern way of making these coins still being made out of silver and copper ... The machinery looks like a strong upgrade to the early steam presses that were invented and installed in the mint during the 1800s. Very nice footage
@@erikbrantner4295 Thanks for watching, Eric. Those machines certainly got the job done back in the day.
@@rivendellcoinsantiquities4964 yes they sure did! I have a few pieces to prove it 👍
This is an intriguing coin that I have not encountered previously. I appreciate you sharing its history, Jonathan. New friend. Thank you for sharing💕

Love Flying Eagle Cents! My friend dug one the other day in a spot I’ve detected many times. We do own a few but I really want to dig one! Love your videos, so informative! Pleased keep up the great work and thank you for sharing.😎
@@masonmercmetaldetecting Thanks for watching. The Flying Eagle Cent is such a nice coin, but I can understand why the U.S. Mint had to change the design and replace it with the IHP. Keep up your great videos!
I love coin stars and finding some change for candy bars
@@MetaldetectingAdventureTime Folks have found some nice change left in the return tray. Thanks for watching!
Good, here the presenter put the key slave trade question nearly front and center, but should have made it more clear that the 'goods' in those South Sea Company trade ships were slaves. More than 64,000 by leading estimates.
@@johnhenrygonzalez9273 Thanks for watching, Johnhenry. Slavery is such a sad chapter in all of colonel history.
Such a great video! We popped a dirty old copper out of the ground the other day and were so excited because we read the date wrong, we relly thought it was one of these but turned out to be a 1797 Draped Bust. Great videos and history you share please keep up the awesome work! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching & commenting! It is amazing what is still in the ground in New Hampshire (I live here as well). Your heart must have skipped a beat finding that copper and wondering if it is a Chain Cent. Still, it is a terrific find. Take care, and happy hunting!

What’s the difference between the score 3 and the legend ?
@@6061lucky Thanks for watching & commenting. I don't have a Legend, but by all accounts it is a great machine. Some pros for the Triple Score are its lower-price point and its "Relic Mode". One could also argue it is a newer machine and so it may have some newer circuitry in the control box, but what real world difference that would make is questionable. In short, I wouldn't turn up my nose at either model. Nokta makes a great product.
As I recall, it is 24 coins to make a complete date and mint set. I need 4 more coins to complete my graded set, 24S, 27, 28, and 35S. It's been fun, and not expensive unless you are looking for higher grade coins, and then only in some date/mint combinations (which the video creator mentioned). Both Morgan's and Peace dollars were minted in 1921. The Peace dollars were minted in High Relief, but the relief was causing a lot of pressure and rapidly destroying the dies. In 1922 they went to the lower relief although a couple of high relief 1922 coins exist.
@@StevenDietrich-k2w Thanks for watching, Steven. Congratulations on almost completing your Peace Dollar set. I agree - there are some challenging dates in the set, but it is a relatively short run of coins.
I've always liked the Franklin better.
Thanks for watching, John. I suppose that Sinnock went for a more "straightforward" American design with the Franklin Half (Franklin's portrait & the Liberty Bell) compared to the more stylized Walking Liberty. I like them both.
You didn't mention 1964😅
@@bruceanderson7762 Thanks for watching, Bruce. I know ... since the 1964 Peace Dollars were not released for circulation (and were supposedly all melted), I decided not to. But if you ever come across one, let me know. 🤣
At 1:25 you say that a common date in "Fine" condition (F-12) would sell for about $30. I believe that isn't correct. They sell for a lot less than $30 for a common date F-12.
@@KDial Thanks for watching. The current melt value of a Peace Dollar is about $23.. While coins can sometimes be purchased below market value, I believe that the numismatic market value of a common date problem-free Peace Dollar in average circulated condition would be around $30 (at least where I live).
@@rivendellcoinsantiquities4964 When you say the current melt is $23, I couldn't believe it. So I decided to check. The Peace dollar being 90% silver comes out to 24 grams, or .8466 of an ounce, times the spot as of 8:30 this morning being $29.60, making the melt $ 25. I am totally shocked! As for an F-12 common is $ 36 retail. Again, knocked off my feet. I got out of the business about 10 years ago, and can not believe the appreciation over those 10 years. Bottom line; you were right, and I was wrong. Apologies
One of our favorite coin videos ever. We now passionately collect these. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching. Maravedis are great coins to collect.
Were some of these two types of coins used in the early US colony? 1/2 ECU being= to four bits or half a dollar? the Spanish Cob was also used as currency in the US colonial time?
@@erikbrantner4295 Hi Erik. Yes, Great Britain did not legally want its gold & silver coinage to be sent to the American Colonies. So, foreign gold and silver made its way to the colonies to fill that void. What mattered was not so much where the coins were from, but what their gold & silver content was. A Half-Ecu would have been the equivalent of a British Half Crown.
@@rivendellcoinsantiquities4964 thank you for sharing this, I guess that would be equal to four bits of this period based on the silver content of this particular coin..
What about the 1964 Peace Dollar?
@@svendevries3245 They were not released for circulation, and were all melted at the Denver mint ... or were they? 🤔
1934 90 years ago now. A time when wheat pennies, buffalo nickels, Merc dimes, walking liberty half dollars, piece dollars were still being minted! Nothing but silver, copper and gold! Unfortunately the great depression had a grip on things, Otherwise a very simple time and a more quality of things!
Yes, it would have been an interesting time to live in, but also a time of hardship for many. Thanks for watching!
Relatively affordable to get the whole collection in circulated condition.

Great information @rivendellcoinsantiquities4964. A visual presentation sometimes seems better than doing some little reading and researching. lol. Interesting...huh...I do not own a Peace Dollar.
@@OgirCoins Thanks for the comment! I may be in the minority among numismatists, but I prefer the Peace Dollar's design to the Seated Dollar & Morgan Dollar. The great thing is an UNC common date Peace Dollar can be purchased for not a whole lot of money.
@@rivendellcoinsantiquities4964 The original Peace Dollars have a beautiful design. If I'm to build a type set I better add one to my collection. Yeah, collect what you enjoy. Have a good day.
