Great reaction dudes... Live long and prosper... An amazing story line perfect in keeping it going for the new actors of the same characters of star trek. Allowing the old guys to step down graciously.😮😢
All the original exterior shots of the Enterprise flying through space have been remastered and most of the special effects. The original SFX are available in comparison reels on RUclips.
Guess we'll have to check those out for comparison someday, maybe even a reaction🤔 Thanks for watching!
The Space Seed episode aired in 1967. The movie Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was released in 1982. The story in the movie takes place 15 years after the events of the TV episode; so it was perfectly linear with real time. The movie involves all the same characters, Kirk, Spock, Bones etc. The executive producer hired for the second film Harve Bennett had never seen Star Trek before. He sat down and watched every single episode of the original series. He kept coming back to Space Seed because of the character of Khan primarily. Spock's line about revisiting that world in 100 years was too hard to ignore and the rest was history. The Wrath Of Khan is widely regarded as the best of the 13 movie series.
Alright good to know, thanks! I figured I was taking Spocks line a bit too literally with the 100 years haha. But just some fun speculation. Good to know Kirk and the rest of the crew will be in the movie though. Thanks for watching!
How did chekoff know about Khan and khan know about checkoff in the movie if Chekoff wasn't in the 1967 episode?!
@@factman-w8m Chekov wasn't part of the bridge crew during that season but he could still have been on the ship in a different capacity, possibly on a lower deck. It is possible Khan could have encountered him on another deck. Kirk did give Khan access to the computer so he could have also researched the crew manifest possibly. It is a loophole in the movie script but easily explained away.
@@DaveNetWorld You're riht, Khan stdied the computer system of the enterprise, and undoubtadly the crew members but it was chekofs panicking reaction when he read "Botany bay" on the wall of khans shack. He had zero experience with khan.
I agree with you it was far too easy for Kirk to win a fist fight with Khan. Khan has 5 times Kirk's strength and is intellectually superior. But other than that glaring issue, this is a great episode.
AGREED about this being a-GREAT-episode and one of my favorites too. Khan: Captain,I have 5 times your strength.
Yes, this was one of my favorite episodes so far as well, maybe after balance of terror! The fight was a little bit of a let down but otherwise very entertaining and well made episode. Thanks for watching! - Nyfbie
@@TheGeekheads And another thing I liked about this episode was all the extras for Khan's crew. They must have had a little of extra money for them. Live Long and Prosper
Khans weakness is over confidence and being a hot head. He can be driven to irrational behavior.
The second of the original series movies is a sequel to this episode.
And we will watch that as well in due time, good to have the backstory for it now though. Thanks for watching!
I prefer the original effects. They often look more realistic.
Interesting, we definitely have to compare them someday as well.
Vulcans have very strong emotions, stronger than humans, but they suppress them through logical reasoning and mental control. According to Memory Alpha Fandom wiki: Since Vulcans have the capability to exert a level of conscious control over virtually all of their body functions, they can actually manipulate the neural pathways that regulate and receive the balances of neurochemicals involved in emotion. This enables them to inhibit their brain from forming the neural impulses that create conscious emotional mental states, thereby actually suppressing their innate emotions. The psycho-suppression system in the Vulcan brain that endows Vulcans with this ability is located in the mesiofrontal cortex.
Interesting, the more you know🤔 thanks for the correction!
Many of the original Star Trek episodes have side-by-side effects comparison videos for the orignal effects vs. the remastered CGI effects. Unfortunately, there is not one for this episode. I thought it was, but apparently it was taken down. Many of the others exist though. Shame... the original model shots for this episode were quite good.
Good to know there are that type of videos around, we'll have to watch those videos someday, maybe even react to them.
You are watching the 2007-2009 remastered version of the series. New CGI effects were made to replace the original model shots.
Alright, so kind of like we expected, it just wasn't netflix that did it this time. Thanks for the info!
And the original was shot on film, it makes all the difference allowing for remastering. Same with The Lucy Show, from the 1950s Desi Arnez insisted on it. Star Trek was a Desilu production.
Well... just so you know.. Star Trek predicted World War III breaking out in 2026....
Star Trek also predicted the Eugenics Wars (1990s) and the Second Civil War (in the early 2020s) preceding World War III, and those never happened irl.
@@luminiferous1960 Buzz kill
Well got to look out for that, hopefully their prediction proves wrong!

That's a good idea, depending on if we have the time. But we will keep that in mind, maybe for our last video of the year! We are also thinking about live streaming on this channel in the future, just need to plan what and when. Thanks for watching!
This episode was based on a few WW2 movies and/or episodes and submarine tactics. A really terrific episode. I'd love to serve on the Enterprise bridge battling a Romulan ship.
I don't know if I'd join you on the ship myself but we enjoyed the episode as well, one of our favorites so far! Thanks for watching :)

@@TheGeekheads yeah I think it's the stache haha

Bad habit, still learning english haha. But we try to use it less. Thanks for watching!
@@TheGeekheads please take it as constructive criticism :) think what you want to say before you say it... then you'll pause less, giving you less chance to fill the pause with a "like."
Please elaborate on what confuses you about this movie. As noted below, there was no CGI. Everything was practical. Do you really need to see that kind of detail as to getting the gun, etc.? Why? That, would, in fact, slow things down.
Can't speak for Crossroads (guy on the right) on that, I personally didn't find it confusing. As to the CGI I don't think we ever said anything about CGI being used in this movie, we know there wasn't. But if it sounded like we did then our bad, we might have misspoken then. I'm not sure what part do you mean by detail of getting the gun? One of us didn't like the pacing overall and felt it was too inconsistent. Me on the other hand liked it. Just differing opinions, that's all :) Thanks for Watching! - Nyfbie
At about 20:19 - they talked about "the cool ship" -- that's the shuttle. Remember Lambert suggested it and Ripley reminded her that the Shuttle wouldn't take four. After Ash, they decide that yes, they can now take the shuttle, since they're down to three. Watch the movie again: the script takes care of a number of your questions.
We will definitely watch the movie again! I imagine we missed a lot, it's hard to catch everything on first viewing especially when reacting haha
At about 18:50 - Ah, shame on you! The cat always matters! Bear in mind that this crew is not a crew of scientists, but have been described as "truckers in space". You can tell that Dallas is somewhat burnt out. They are singularly unprepared for the events that happen here and the company members who decided on this move probably took that into account. The true villain of this movie is the company.
Que de mais, amo esse filme.
This is where the entire concept of a “cloaking device” originated. So many things we take for granted now….
That's amazing! Seen it used so many times since and never knew it started with this.
In terms of budget Star Trek was actually the most expensive show on TV at the time. Sure, considering today it had a small budget, but corrected for inflation it would still not have been tiny. Consider this: In a normal TV show at the time, some cop show or soap, you can reuse stuff. A car is a car, a telephone is a telephone. But for Star Trek EVERYTHING had to be built. Every prop had to be created. There was nothing pre-existing that you could just use. Add to that the special effects that had to be created for every show and it tells you that this show was incredibly expensive for its time. The budget for the first season was $190,000 per episode. Adjusted for inflation that would be ~$1,835,000 today. Today's shows can sometimes have a budget of around 8 million per episode, but they also only do 8-10 episodes per season. Back in these days they did 22-26 episodes per season. That shows you that the budget wasn't actually all that different, just spread out over more episodes, and even those weren't cheap. most of the early episodes actually went massively over-budget.
I can imagine it did! But it was still a TV show budget and back then this must have been super expensive to do and needed a lot of tough decisions on what they can and should use it on. But that's an insane amount of money for a TV show especially back then. Thanks for watching!
What a monumental episode. The concepts and drama are as timely now as they were in the 1960s. One of the eispodes that made me fall in love with all of Star Trek as a kid in the early 90s. It is wondeful to see the younger generations discovering and keeping a legendary francise alive! And from my great-grandparents' home country as well. SUOMI !
Haha that's awesome, torilla tavataan!🇫🇮 And this was one of our favorite episodes as well so far. We are doing our duty as film enthusiast to not let all these classic franchises die!
The helmsman ('navigator') on the bridge of a warship is the most junior officer on the bridge.
If you keep watching Trek through all the shows, you can count on my support :)
Thanks, appreciate that!
Such an interesting plot.
A slow improvement gives finished product 10% less obnoxious than previous work, however, the real Saku Koivu would never apply chapstick during game action.
Aspects of this storyline have been borrowed from many submarines war movies which pre-date it. Obviously not the wedding. But as is common in Star Trek, there's a moral to be learned. In this case bigotry.
For the time it was made, Star Trek went out of its way to make Uhura specificly highly intelligent and versatile as a crew member. I don't think the show gets enough credit for it. There are definitely some old ideas, I'm not saying it was perfect. But there was definitely an effort to make a statement in the series.
For sure, this show was definitely very progressive for its time.
Notice how Scotty bolted at the same time Kirk said "Full ahead." He anticipated the order and was already headed to his station. The MAN!
Who has died? Nobody....yet.
The episode is based on the World War II movie THE ENEMY BELOW.
I wish the Romulans had a Drinking Song!
@jamesalexander5623 They don't strike me as particularly fun loving.
Perhaps you have explained your intentions before. In terms of Khan, I want you to know that there were several movies starring the original cast. Decades later would be JJ Abrams’ version on Star Trek. You have seen the first of JJ Abrams’ movies. Into Darkness is the second. These are very different from the original movies.
Yes, we started with the first JJ Abrams movie because we had no idea of where we should start and it was the only movie we could get our hands on at the time. We are planning on watching all of them, the original movies and the rest of the Abrams movies as well, whenever we have the chance😄 Thanks for watching!
Romulans are defined by this episode and Klingons by Errand of Mercy until the third movie where the director insisted on a last second swap of the film's antagonists from Romulans to Klingons which was done by swapping out the names. This erased the honor bound warrior ethos from the Romulans and gave it to the Klingons transforming them from brutal totalitarians to the absurd "Warrior! Honor! Warrior!" trope who sometimes fly space bird ships for no reason.
Never served in a star fleet, but in the air force. First you work with whatever equipment you were trained on, but over time you usually learn how to operate other equipment. First inofficially to assist with checks and maintainance, later possibly officially with all required training so that you can stand in for the regular operator when needed.
That makes a lot of sense. Serving in the air force must have been pretty cool!
In a submarine, if you have any time in, you pretty much know how to do anything. In Star Trek Strange new worlds they show Uhura doing a rotation at all the ships sections so she is minimally qualified for most of them.
@@MichaelJohnson-vi6eh Within some limits. For example I could never have gotten an air defense missile on to a launcher since I never was in a launching crew. But I could operate any station in fire control to track a target and send that missile after them.
I was USAF Security (SAC). I never stopped training for positions in my career field. From a ground-pounding sentry to armed response leader to entry controller for restricted areas and wing command post. That way we became more versatile.
The Romulan point of view is that if they, believe that they can defeat someone, that, by itself, is sufficient reason to attack.
so the American position.
@@AzguardMike Nonsense and also irrelevant to my thread. Give one example.
Classic episode, based on those old WW2 submarine dramas. If you watch Strange New Worlds...remember this episode :). Mark Lenard is the Romulan Commander, he went on to play Spock's father Sarek plus in The Motion Picture, a small cameo as a Klingon.
We'll keep that in mind when we watch the Strange New Worlds, thanks!
Takes place in space so 😎 The Romulan Commander is played by Mark Lenard who also plays Spock's father. Question, How did Spock get the sample of the space station's outer shield? Grace Lee Whitney's last TOS episode.😭
That's a good question haha! He has to be a wizard
To answer your question, they detected debris after the station was destroyed and beamed some aboard to analyze it.
There's a mention in the dialog about them collecting debris
He is Spock.. heh
Good paying attention to detail, amigo,I never noticed this till you brought it up. I also didn't know this was Grace Whitney's last TOS episode, what happened ????
@ 1:49 I always wished I could have got that song. But I don't know the name.
Took me awhile to find it but it is "Sparrowhawk - The Fugitive" By Tamiya Terashima :)
Wow, 😲 thanks bro!!!@@TheGeekheads

Thanks, appreciate it! It is what it is, can't make everyone like you I guess. But we rather be honest and do our thing than try to please everyone haha! Live long and prosper🖖🏻
Omg that movie was so sad
Omg your Take on this movie is one of the worst i have ever heard "Dude Like what is the Point of the movie🧌" was all you could say to this masterpiece 🫢🤦
That wasn't all I said about the movie so I'm not sure what you mean by that? I'm always honest in my reactions and on this one, on my first viewing, I didn't catch what the deeper meaning or the theme of this film was. That's all I said. But I did enjoy the movie a lot, don't get me wrong😄 Thanks for watching!
non-stop dumbness OVER the dialogue. Clueless. They don't even know what the word reaction means. Bailed after 15 minutes as I felt my IQ dropping each minute.
I think this episode has some of the most META moments. Starting at 9:46 we are watching the court watching the Talosians watching Captain Pike watch an illusion.
The story behind this movie is so beautiful. That's what Ghibli movies are all about. Thanks for your reaction.
And thank you for watching!
I've seen "The Cage" (or "The Menagerie") about 50 times, starting when Gene Roddenberry showed us his private copy in the early 70s at the first "Star Trek" convention. I also saw it in a movie theater about 15 years ago when they re-mastered it. I never found it boring and I certainly never found it "super f^^king boring." It's one of the best TV series episodes you'll ever see.
"The Cage" was a rejected pilot, so was never shown on TV until decades later.
Just to add a bit more detail. Rejected and a second pilot was ordered, with significant studio demanded changes such as getting rid of the female first officer and Asian transporter crew as these offended executive sensibilities, which is why it never aired. Roddenberry frequently showed the pilot (along with blooper reels) in parallel with Trek conventions, but at showings he sold the tickets for.
@@gallendugall8913 He showed it to us at the first "Star Trek" convention. No tickets were involved.
I LOVE this pilot so much,it's rather disturbing tho. LOL.
Jeffrey Hunter was Pike in the original pilot but didn't want to do a second pilot or series. Hence Kirk et al came in and the rest is history. Now you've seen this famous episode, you can get into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which is basically ST: The Pike Years leading up to his accident. Its a great tv show, worth checking out. Incidentally, cut footage from The Cage is used, the rest was thought to be lost. In the late 80's/early 90's you could get a VHS version of The Cage which mixed the colour Menagerie footage with the missing parts only in B&W. It was odd to watch, but the story was complete. But the 'lost' footage was found (I heard a story the Menagerie editor gave it to his Trek mad nephew as a gift and was stuck in an attic for 25 years, unsure if its true though), copies made and now you can get a complete colour version. You should check out Forbidden Planet (1956) to see what inspired Trek.
Interesting story🤔 We'll be watching Strange New Worlds in the future as well for sure. Thanks for the recommendation, sounds interesting!
@@TheGeekheads Forbidden Planet is widely thought of as the inspiration for Trek, I have the blu ray on my Star Trek disc shelf. Its a great movie, with Leslie Nielsen in a refreshing serious leading man role. If you watch it, note the navigators line at the start....'holding at 1701'...USS Enterprise NCC 1701 :)
@@TheGeekheads Yes, they say that it was in Roddenberry's mind when he invented "Star Trek," and it's a wonderful movie.
1. This is my favorite episode in TOS. Nothing against Shatner but it's nice to see an episode where he doesn't have to carry as much. 2. Susan Oliver could have gotten it. RIP Susan😘😭😇 3. Stil establishing his character, emotionless Spock smiles while touching the vibrating plant leaf. 4. This was supposed to be the first episode featuring Jeffery Hunter/Pike but his wife talked him out of doing a Sci-fi series. 5. Scotty is higher ranked than McCoy. Spock should have given the con to him. 6. The Theolins are super cool.
Susan Oliver was very-PRETTY-and had very lovely eyes too. She did a GREAT job of acting in this episode. RIP: Ms Oliver
The guy on the right is irritating; the guy on the left more resembles Saku Koivu, my idea of a Finn. Hopefully, they will abandon any more talk of The Cage which was the REJECTED pilot they should not have watched.
Hey hey, we are both irritating depending on what day it is haha! But Saku is a legend and was one of my favorite players when I was a kid so thanks for that compliment💙 We were talking about The Cage because it were relevant to this specific story, so It was just fun to use it as a reference to see how the show changed after the initial rejection of The Cage :) But we won't be talking about it much in the future, no worries!
@@TheGeekheads I think Saku Koivu would be better to ditch his partner and make a better effort with a new tandem say, for example, Reijo Ruotsalainen.
One of the bald headed aliens is a female actor, the lead one. Gene Roddenberry would sometimes mess with our minds by having a female actor with a male's voice dubbed over to show gender neutrality.
All the Talosians are females with Felix Silla the only exception.
@@fredklein3829 wow, I didn't realize they all were, fascinating
That's amazing, makes me respect him even more! Thanks for letting us know ~ Nyfbie
