    Even though this video does not have all the information. Your demonstration was pretty close. As I am a certified marine mechanic, I noticed a few things of concern. I am only sharing this info to try and help. #1 Never use anti seize. Merc recommends using grease or oil on threads. While cleaning the gears inspect them. If there is any pitting they should be replaced. #2 It is critical on any gearcase, upper or lower, to check the tolerances like preload and backlash. Especially if you replace any internal parts. #3 The Bravo upper gear assemblies are all timed gears. Both gears will have a + on one side of the gear and a - on the other side. When installing the drive gear and clutch cam , these upper and lower gears should be opposite from each other. Here is an example , top gear will be + , and the lower gear will show -- , and a vertical line should match perfectly with each other. Replace all the rubber seals on the top cover and back cover. #4 The torque specs are as follows: B) Shift linkage cap screw with lock tight 271, 16.7 FT-LB C) Top Cap bolts with lock tight 271, 20 FT-LB D) Back cover bolts with lock tight 271, 20 FT-LB E) Shift Assembly nuts with lock tight 271, 80 LB-IN D) Measure the Retainer nut tool from the center of the Big side to the center of the square hole for the ratchet. Normally it measures 12 inches. Now measure your torque wrench from the center of the head (square) to the center of the handle. The following torque wrench lengths are in inches and torque specs are in foot pounds are as follows. 15 inches 111 ft lb 16 inches 114 ft lb 17 inches 117 ft lb 18 inches 120 ft lb 19 inches 123 ft lb 20 inches 125 ft lb 21 inches 129 ft lb 22 inches 131 ft lb 23 inches 131 ft lb 24 inches 133 ft lb 25 inches 135 ft lb 26 inches 136 ft lb 27 inches 138 ft lb 28 inches 140 ft lb 29 inches 141 ft lb 30 inches 143 ft lb 31 inches 144 ft lb 32 inches 145 ft lb 33 inches 147 ft lb 34 inches 148 ft lb 35 inches 149 ft lb 36 inches 150 ft lb E) After reassemble you should pressure test the unit, before refilling it with oil. I hope this information is helpful.

      Glad you liked the video. I was forced to dig into my problems with the drive probably like you. I have mechanical aptitude but I'm not a mechanic. Some suggestions I would make to you are: 1) get a manual for the year of the drive that you have that will give you specs and part numbers of things you might need. 2) if you're hesitant to go at it alone, ask around at a marina or boat ramp or similar place for the name of a mechanic that you could consult once you get started if you get stuck. You can always throw someone a few bucks to give you advice over the phone or show up for a step that you're stuck on and still have the satisfaction of fixing the drive yourself and most importantly getting to know all about it. You might need to take certain things to a shop anyway to install bearings or the like if you do not have the tools for that type of stuff. Take your time as you do things, be organized. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for the tips. I will definitely do some research and see if I can figure out exactly what drive I have and see if I can find a manual for it. Worst case scenario I can always drive to Florida for your input. lol Just kidding 😂 Thanks again 👍🏻

    Cement mix of any brand. It doesn't matter. Cement mix contains Portland Cement, sand and aggregate together in dry form in 60lb or 80 lb bags. Slowly mix water into the dry mix until you get a consistence you can work with.

    Bravo! Couldn't resist the pun. lol. What an awesome video. Your attention to detail is incredible. I have a 220 searay with the exact outdrive. Lately my son and I notice a slight delay before the drive engages. Especially when going from forward to reverse. Nothing crazy, but i suspect it will get worse. I mentioned a cone clutch replacement to my mechanic and he said it would be an 8K job! I've done a ton of work to my drive and engine in the last 2 years, so i suspect i can handle this one. Your video has given me the courage to tackle the project at the end of the season. Should i have any concerns about timing and/or setting clearances? Those comments scare me. I don't have any timing tools or specific clearance setting tools. I do have almost every other mercruiser specialty tool made however. LMFAO. (what a racket) 😁 Thanks for your time with this video. It has brought hope for our aging SeaRay! Cheers.

      I am not a mechanic....like you. The clutch is the clutch so, as far as I know there are no clearance issues that I am aware but consider asking a mechanic who knows for certain. Since you are not changing any of the stuff in the stack up and down, I'm thinking no issues with clearance. What I didn't mention in the video and is in the SELOC manual I have, it says there is an index mark on the centerline of the housing under the back plate and there is a "+" and a "-" on the hubs of the gears that engage the cone clutch and they must all align at assembly. I don't understand why but, there you are! Good luck.

    • @conradts3338
      @conradts3338 3 месяца назад

      Sorry. not sure what you're asking. Knock sensors and oil pressure sensors are entirely different. Knock sensors gives feedback to the computer about whether the timing needs to be advanced or retarded to eliminate pre-ignition ("pinging"). Oil pressure sending unit tells you that you that your oil pump is working or not working -- building pressure to feed your engine's bearings and such. if it is NOT working, SHUT DOWN YOUR ENGINE IMMEDIATLY! An engine without oil will seize up in very short order! If it is on all the time and the engine hasn't seized, then it is probably the sending unit or a broken wire. I'm not a mechanic so I'm just telling you what I think -- not advice you should bet the life of your car on. LOL.

    • @Wesaazx
      @Wesaazx 3 месяца назад

      @conradts3338 nope,it's the wire before the steering pump,it's going into the underneath,it's the oilswitch wire.its a one way pin kind of wire...mine got cut and for that reason,the oil yellow light is on ,at dashboard.

    • @conradts3338
      @conradts3338 3 месяца назад

      @@Wesaazx so if you can find the ends of the cut wires, you can strip them and even wire nut them back together -- not a recommended fix but it would get your light out. also, if there isn't enough length between the cut ends you can splice in another piece -- also not recommended but it will fixt your "light on" problem.

    I'm not a mechanic, so I'm probably not the guy to suggest to you the failure or the fix. If your gear oil levels in your outdrive drop to critical levels, it could cause an immediate failure, though I believe cone clutches usually fail from wear over time. Without disassembly, you probably won't know what went wrong.

    I’m subscribed now. I’m very sorry that you lost so much from the salt water. Thoroughly disgusted I’m sure. Totally empathize . This video has motivated me to do my pathway from driveway to. You really did an amazing job. I detest those pavers from the big box stores. No character and totally over priced if you ask me. I think if I do a few stones a day it’s manageable even for me. I really like the idea of the flashing forms. Bend mold form however you want…. Great idea. I have a couple of questions if I may. Sooooo…… you cut into 4 inch thickness. 1. How long though? 2. On same note why 4 inches thick if you need but a couple of inches? 3. If I wanted to stamp the top of stones to mimic slate or whatever is there a way to do that with form still in place? 4. Again about stamping… would you still do the colorant the same way? 5. Do you think it’s necessary to dig out and put the sand underneath? 6. I understood about trying to make a bit drier when trying to meet the patio but typically do you mix it a bit wetter? 7. For reference can you give me the size - length and width of the three stones. Obviously not exactly but just an idea please. I can’t lift an 80 lbs bag so it will be the 50 kinda need to have an idea what to have on hand and mixed because I’ll have no help nor a mixer to speed things along.I like the idea of not having to add wire for strength. Most others on RUclips say you have to. I’m thinking I why? Surely a 2 inch slab would be strong enough to hold me and my Pomeranian hehehe. So anyway. Thank you in advance if you have the opportunity to answer my questions.

    • @conradts3338
      @conradts3338 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your sympathy -- just getting started replanting all my stuff. 1. I think that I bought 10' long x 4" wide flashing. Think that if you want to make a "stone" 1 foot wide (in diameter), your form must be about 3.14' long (thats Circumference = Pi x Diameter) where Pi = 3.1416 That's always the ratio so I randomly chopped the 10' into three sections - one a little bigger than 3' and on a little smaller than 3' so I could make various sizes. You can use paper clasps (like for thick files) though I originally ran a screw through then ends to hold together. 2. Your stones do NOT have to be 4" thick though I would recommend at least two inches minimum. Concrete is very strong in compression but not so in tension so..... if the "stone" is not supported well underneath, it will eventually break. (That is why some people put metal lathe or wire inside because that provides the strength in tension that the cement does not possess. 3. After you 'pour" your fresh stone and the cement is wet, you can wait an hour or so (experiment a little) and as it sets you can texture the surface. There are molds made of silicone from real stones that are sold but they are quite expensive -- about $50 for a square foot (12x12). As an alterative, you can achieve some level of success by taking a plastic grocery bag, balling it up in your hand and artistically dabbing the surface with the exposed side hanging out of the bottom. You can also use the bottom of a broom and a combo of things. It just takes a little patients and imagination. 4. You can sprinkle (if powder) or pour (if liquid) on top or in the top layer of the cement or in the batch of raw cement (though, personally, I think coloring through is a waste of money. Only the top surface 1/8" at most is what you'll ever see in the life of your "stone". You can color at any time the cement is wet before it turns to concrete. 5. You don't need to dig out. That is a choice of where in your landscape these stones will be relative to a tripping hazard, lawnmower obstacle course, etc. What IS IMPORTANT is that the stone be supported from underneath or they will break -- see #1 above. 6. In general, dryer cement is harder when it sets. In these simple projects, it hardly matters at all. Mix it to the extent you are comfortable in working with it. What you saw in that video is typically the consistence of how I mix it so it is workable but not soupy. 7. The biggest stone is about 22 x 14 and the middle stone was about 16 x 10. Done know what the little one was but it was similar to middle one. Cement mix generally comes in 80# bags and 60# bags. You can have a loader at the store help you get them into the car -- I recommend butting a large trash bag under it. When you get home, you can cut the bag and scoop out what you can handle at a time into a bucket Yes -- a 2" thick slab is surly enough to carry your weight plus your little dog! You are not likely to need any metal reinforcement inside unless they were quite large "stones". What would be important though, again, is the bedding underneath so that the stone wasn't supported on each end and not in the middle which would be a sure failure. Hope this help. Good luck with your project!

You do this by setting your torque wrench to 130 ft-lbs because you'll be attached to your specialty wrench out some distance from the center of your castle nut/shaft. Good luck!

    You CAN have them rebuilt at a starter shop. And, YES you can get socket on the outside bolt. And, yes the half inch socket fits but it is fact 13mm. How would you like to have to go thru BS this everyday?

    If you want to make feet it doesn't have to be part of the planter they can be separate. You can use throw away plastic cups and fill them with mortar to the height that you want and break away the plastic. Or fill a ice cube tray with mortar and tip them out and you got loads of feet

    1. I was looking through my manual for something else yesterday and saw that the torque for the cap and back plate screws should be 18-22 ft-lbs. 2. What finally fixed my shift problem is replacing the cable from the helm to the engine. It seems that years of activity caused a groove or pocket between the sheath and the inner cable causing the bind when shifting into forward. (I had previously forced oil through the existing cable by putting a slightly larger tube 4" long over the sheath with a hose clamp, filling w oil, and using compressed air to force it in but... the new cable was the ticket to success.

    ...and i think i read your question wrong. I think the proper torque for the cap ans back is 35 ft-lbs.

    what was the torque you tighted the screws to at the end?

    • @conradts3338
      @conradts3338 5 месяцев назад

      The rated torque is 200 ft-lbs but since you already have an offset from center of the shaft to the end of the special wrench, I set my torque wrench to 130 ft-lbs.

      @@conradts3338 sorry I should have been more specific, what’s the torque for the bolts of the casing ?

      yes please. Also, did you ever end up finding out what your shiftin issue was. Im in the same pickle. I have disassembled and rebuild my upper 3 times now and cant seem to figure out why I cant smoothly shift from reverse to forward. Im only able to do so by tapping the shift linkage with a rubber mallet.

    Sounds bad, but you may have to pull the engine...

    Your design looks very good. However I a concerned that you only used screws to hold it together. Bolts with back plates would give you a much longer life of the dock.

      Yes. Thanks. You're right and actually I went back and bolted through the attachments to the sea wall. This project was on a budget and I had considered bolting the corners with galvanized brackets but dismissed due to cost of those brackets and all the hardware required. I considered that the wood would rot eventually and that I would probably just replace the dock anyway. Thanks for your suggestion!

    Looks like you just need a small clamp to keep the forms in place. Saves time.

      In the past, the ends of the flashing was secured by some screws. But, thanks for the suggestion!

    I am usually much more vigilant about things like weight of concrete. I can't believe that I missed that before I started pouring the concrete. The story about your dog is very funny. Thanks for sharing.
