Is This Mall Still Winning? ~Southern Park Mall~ Boardman, Ohio
Hard to believe that The Southern Park Mall was a staple of my childhood for Friday and Saturday nights! The place was crowded, sounds of arcade games and water fountains filled the halls of what was once a magical place.
So, is this mall still winning? or is it on the losing team with some of the other malls that are falling into the obsolete?

My dad grew up in youngstown on W Deleson Ave off of Glenwood until he went in the navy and relocated to Annapolis Md. I remember going back to my grandmother's house many times and enjoying the park as a kid. I went back to Youngstown around 20 years ago for a funeral (first time since around 1975) and didn't recognize the city. All the homes were my dad lived were so run down after all the steel mills closed down. I'm now 67 years old and would like to go back and spend a few days and visit mill creek park and the land where Idora Amusement Park was. Was a great time as a kid.

Hi Jim, !!!WOW ~ WEE!!! So much has changed! I haven't been to Our Mall in awhile 😮. I had no idea that it's barely utilized by customers. I could honestly say l haven't walked through in quite a long time and didn't realize it changed so much! I would like to mention a few things you didn't mention and you might not know because you are a little younger than me and didn't see it happening. ~ Before the mall went on that corner it was a huge valley. Looking down into that valley was a picturesque view of flowing, rich green grass that seemed to go on forever with a little white church in its hollow. The memory l have as a child born in 1964 is that there was a huge problem concerning the demolition of that church. They decided instead of demolishing the church to move it, which was a big deal. Besides us, it seemed like the whole town came together to watch this moving process happen. To me, it was amazing to see the church put on a trailer and pulled East on RT 224!!! Hence, the church that's in Boardman Park that's now mostly used for wedding ceremonies. ~ l also remember a couple years later an addition was added to the mall and it housed the Joseph Hornes store. ~ There was a movie theater where many of first saw the movie "Jaws"! ~ Top of line, high end woman's & girl's clothing was found in "Livingston's". ~ Another big deal was to eat at the restaurant which you mentioned. The store at that time was called Strouss'. ~ For hip or on the edge clothing, the store to go to was The Merry - Go - Round. ~ To buy music there was, ??? National Record Mark ???. ~ Frederick's was the go to for sexy lingerie (push-ups with foam falsies, bras with cutouts for nipples to protrude, crotchless panties, extremely risque street clothes, plus more. ~ l can go on and on with this list

In 1770, George Washington set out on an expedition to explore the Ohio River Valley. On the 22nd day of October he camped overnight in what was known then as Mingo Town, describing it as blustery and cold with about 20 cabins and 70 inhabitants of the Iroquois Confederation. Washington wrote a complete account of his observations in a diary stored in the Library of Congress. Mingo Junction was founded circa 1869 when an iron works was started there. In 1900, its only manufacturing plant was a steel mill owned by Carnegie Steel Company.
