    Thanks for that interesting bit of history. I first heard this song sung by Tony McCauley in a pub in Cookstown. I went home and asked my mother if she knew the song. To my surprise, she sang me the whole song. She was from Draperstown. I grew up there myself and spent my childhood in view of Slieve Gallon.

    I don't think that Kavanagh just set his poem to Fáinne Geal an Lae. His poem is a modern urban recreation of the older folk song. The elusive lover disappearing in the final verse. That is the basic motif of the Aisling genre. That is not to detract in any way from another excellently researched documentary.

    • @noelryan6341
      @noelryan6341 15 дней назад

      Correct. PK wrote a POEM ('On Raglan Road') regarding the object of his unrequited love (Medical Student from County Kerry Hilda Moriarty later married to the visionary Minister for Education Donough O'Malley of Limerick City who died prematurely in his '4o's). The poem was 'married' to Air 'Fáinne Geal an Lae/The Dawning Of The Day', made unmistakably associated with the inimitable Dubliner Luke Kelly.

      Thanks for comment. Thomas Patrick Keenan (1866-1927) was a Dublin man who died in Castletownroche, Cork. He wrote Hello, Patsy Fagan and A Mother's Love's a Blessing, but I don't think he wrote The Boys from the County Armagh.

    Again, I thought it was of greater "antiquity" when I first heard this song on an Albany, NY FM radio station in the '70s. Always chuckled when Christy Moore when doing an intro to Lisdoonvarna quipped "There are 32 counties in Ireland, Longford ,Westmeath and Roscommon".

    👏☘💚Another outstanding presentation. I remember singing that song at home, just like the little Cork boy on Paddy Crosbie's TV Show 'The School Around The Corner'. Mention of Brendan Boyer, Tom Dunphy and The Royal Showband triggered a memory: Brendan Boyer's father played the magnificent Wurlitzer Theatre Organ at the Savoy Cinema in Limerick City during the interval. Back then, a movie might take two reels, requiring an intermission to allow the Projectionist time to switch over. That magnificent Organ would rise up like magic from the Orchestra Pit below the Stage, with Boyer Senior playing much-appreciated tunes. 🎼🎹🎶

    I knew of Ned Harrigan but always thought the song had "from the soil sprung". Ironically, the American Harrigan used the terms "gaugers" and "Granuaile", while some of the Irish groups replaced them with "policemen" and "Galway Bay" for international consumption.

    Iontach/Fantastic! One correction to the lyrics though, De Valera didn't 'fight' at Boland's Mills. Cowardly, he holed up there, not committing his desperately needed troops to relieve those besieged in the GPO. His American Citizenship saved him from execution, as Britain needed American aid in WW1.

    I've never read Toibin's novel but I always thought of the fellas in that scene as the old bachelors occupying various boarding houses and flats with nowhere to go on Christmas and the parish putting on a dinner for them. I'd see them myself in the '70s taking the train back, alone, into the city from Gaelic Park on a sweltering summer afternoon but they in their traditional countryman's garb of cap, dark suit coat and trousers. Those rides evoked similar emotions in me.
